4. Friday Ṣalāh (Jumuʿah) (6/9)
[Machine] Allah, may He be glorified, said: "When the call to prayer is proclaimed on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah." (Surah Al-Jumu'ah, verse 9) And He also said: "And He is the Witness and the Witnessed."
قَالَ اللهُ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُهُ: {إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللهِ} [الجمعة: 9] وَقَالَ: {وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ}
The Prophet ﷺ said: Three types of people attend Friday prayer; One is present in a frivolous way and that is all he gets from it; another comes with a supplication, Allah may grant or refuse his request as He wishes; another is present silently and quietly with-out stepping over a Muslim or annoying anyone, and that is an atonement for his sins till the next Friday and three days more, the reason being that Allah, the Exalted, says: "He who does a good deed will have ten times as much" (vi.160). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1113)
[Machine] He said: "I entered the mosque on Friday, and the Prophet ﷺ was giving a sermon. I sat close to Ubayy ibn Ka'b, and the Prophet ﷺ recited Surah Bara'ah. So, I asked Ubayy, 'When was this Surah revealed?' He counted on his fingers but did not answer me. After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, I said to Ubayy, 'I asked you and you ignored me.' Ubayy replied, 'You have nothing from your prayer except what you have lost.' So, I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I was beside Ubayy while you were reciting Bara'ah, and I asked him when it was revealed, but he ignored me.' Then the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Ubayy spoke the truth.' This narration was reported by Abdullah ibn Ja'far, from Shareek, from Ata', from Abu Darda', from Ubayy ibn Ka'b. Harb ibn Qays also reported it from Abu Darda', and he mentioned it between Ubbay and him. It was also reported by Isa ibn Jarirah, from Jabir ibn Abdullah. Al-Hakim ibn Aban reported the same meaning of this story between Ibn Mas'ud and Ubayy ibn Ka'b. However, he mentioned it without naming a specific person, and instead of Ubayy, he used Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. This narration is not more authentic than the hadith we mentioned before. And Allah knows best."
[Machine] While the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) was giving a sermon on Friday, Abu Dharr said to Abu bin Ka'b, "When was this Surah revealed?" He did not respond, so when he finished his prayer, he said to him, "You have not received any reward for your prayer except what you have wasted." Abu Dharr then went to the Prophet (PBUH) and told him about it, and he said, "Abu Dharr has spoken the truth."
4.57 [Machine] Listening to the sermon even if not hearing it.
Ali said on the pulpit in the mosque of Kufah: When Friday comes, the devils go to the markets with their flags, and involve people in their needs and prevent them from the Friday prayer. The angels come early in the morning, sit at the door of the mosque, and record that so-and-so came at the first hour, and so-and-so came at the second hour until the imam comes out (for preaching). When a man sits in a place where he can listen (to the sermon) and look (at the imam), where he remains silent and does not interrupt, he will receive a double reward. If he stays away, sits in a place where he cannot listen (to the sermon), silent, and does not interrupt, he will receive the reward only once. If he sits in a place where he can listen (to the sermon) and look (at the imam), and he does not remain silent, he will have the burden of it. If anyone says to his companion sitting besides him to be silent (while the imam is preaching), he is guilty of idle talk. Anyone who interrupts (during the sermon) will receive nothing (no reward) on that Friday. Then he (the narrator) says in the end of this tradition: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say so. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by al-Walid b. Muslim from Ibn Jabir. This version adds: bi'l-raba'ith (instead of al-raba'ith, needs preventing the people from prayer). Further, this adds: Freed slave of his wife Umm 'Uthman b. 'Ata. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1051)

[Machine] He hears in luck as the listener does. So when prayer starts, straighten the rows and align the shoulders, for the straightening of the rows is from completing the prayer. Then do not make the takbeer until men who have been delegated to ensure the straightening of the rows come to him and inform him that they are straight. Then he makes the takbeer.

4.58 [Machine] Signaling silence without speaking it. It is mentioned about Zaid Ibn Suhan that he said: "If a person speaks and he is close to you, wink at him, and if he is far away, gesture to him.
[Machine] He heard Anas ibn Malik saying, "A man entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on the pulpit on the day of Friday, and he said, 'O Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour?' The people indicated for him to be silent, but he asked him three times. Each time, they indicated for him to be silent. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'At the third time, woe to you! What have you prepared for it?' And he mentioned the Hadith."
4.59 [Machine] The argument of those who claim that listening to the imam's sermon is a choice and that speaking about what it means or what it means for others while the imam is delivering it is permissible.
[Machine] A man came and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was giving a sermon to the people on Friday. He asked, "Did you pray, O so-and-so?" The man replied, "No." He then told him, "Stand up and perform the bowing position, using a particular phrasing."
Once in the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ the people were afflicted with drought (famine). While the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Khutba on a Friday, a Bedouin stood up and said, "O, Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Our possessions are being destroyed and the children are hungry; Please invoke Allah (for rain)". So the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands. At that time there was not a trace of cloud in the sky. By Him in Whose Hands my soul is as soon as he lowered his hands, clouds gathered like mountains, and before he got down from the pulpit, I saw the rain falling on the beard of the Prophet. It rained that day, the next day, the third day, the fourth day till the next Friday. The same Bedouin or another man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The houses have collapsed, our possessions and livestock have been drowned; Please invoke Allah (to protect us)". So the Prophet ﷺ raised both his hands and said, "O Allah! Round about us and not on us". So, in whatever direction he pointed with his hands, the clouds dispersed and cleared away, and Medina's (sky) became clear as a hole in between the clouds. The valley of Qanat remained flooded, for one month, none came from outside but talked about the abundant rain. (Using translation from Bukhārī 933)

[Machine] "The group that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to Ibn Abi Al-Hakam in Khaybar to kill him did so, and they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was standing on the pulpit on Friday. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them when he saw them, 'Successful are the faces.' They replied, 'Your face is the most successful, O Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, 'Did you kill him?' They replied, 'Yes.' Then he called for the sword with which he was killed while he was standing on the pulpit. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Is this his food in the flies of the sword?' The group consisted of Abdullah bin Atik, Abdullah bin Unais, Aswad bin Khuzai, and Abu Qatada. According to what Zuhri supposes, and Zuhri doesn't preserve the fifth hadith. If this one was a sent one, then he is a good sent one. This is a well-known story among the leaders of expeditions, and it has been narrated from another perspective by Zuhri and narrated from Abu Al-Aswad by Urwah bin Zubair. They mentioned this story, along with Mas'ud bin Sinan, who reported to us Abu Al-Hasan bin Al-Fadl Al-Qattan in Baghdad, who informed us Abdullah bin Ja'far via Ya'qub bin Sufyan, who reported to me Hassan bin Abdullah, who reported from Ibn Lahi'ah, who reported from Abu Al-Aswad, who reported from Urwah, who said... And Ya'qub reported to us Ibrahim bin Mundhir, who reported from Muhammad bin Fuleih, who reported from Musa bin 'Uqbah, who reported from Ibn Shihab. They mentioned this story, and it has also been narrated concisely from another perspective."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Ibn Abi al-Huqayq and when I returned, he was delivering the Friday sermon. He said, "Success is in the face." I said, "And may your face be successful, O Messenger of Allah." This was narrated in its entirety from Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah bin Ka'b from Abdullah bin Unais, connectedly.
[Machine] When I approached the city of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I tied my camel and dismounted my ride. I adorned myself with my best clothes and entered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was giving a sermon, and he greeted me. The people stared at me, so I said to my companion, "O Abdullah, did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention anything about me?" He replied, "Yes, he mentioned you in the best way possible during his sermon. He said that someone will enter upon you through this door or from this side, and he is from the people of goodness and virtue. And on his face is the mark of an angel." So I thanked Allah for what He made clear to me.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to do seven things and forbade us from doing seven things. He commanded us to visit the sick, follow the funeral processions, return greetings, respond to the caller, fulfill agreements, bless the sneezer, and support the oppressed. He forbade us from wearing gold rings, drinking from silver vessels, wearing silk, wearing leopard skin, wearing expensive clothing, and drinking from cups with pictures on them.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "There are five obligations of a Muslim towards his brother: returning the greeting, praising Allah when someone sneezes, visiting the sick, following a funeral procession, and accepting an invitation."
[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ, he said: When a person sneezes and the Imam is delivering the Friday sermon, he should cover his nose and this has been narrated from Al-Hasan regarding his statement. It has also been narrated from Salim ibn Abdullah regarding responding to the greeting and from Ibrahim an-Nakha'i regarding stifling a sneeze and responding to the greeting. It has been reported from him that he disliked it. It is mentioned from Ibn Musayyib that he said concerning the greeting, it is returned in oneself, and when asked about stifling a sneeze, he forbade it. It is reported from Ibn Sirin regarding the greeting that he used to nod his head but not speak.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to be approached by a man after the prayer was offered and after descending from the pulpit. He would stand with him until he fulfilled his need, then he would proceed to perform the prayer. Abu Ali al-Rudhbary informed us that Muhammad ibn Bakr said: Abu Dawood said about this hadith, "It is not known from Thabit, and it is one of the things Jarir ibn Hazim was unique in." The sheikh (referring to Imam Bukhari) mentioned it with its meaning, and it is well-known from Thabit.
[Machine] A man had a need, so the Prophet ﷺ stood and conversed with him until some people or some of the people fell asleep. Then they prayed the prayer of Hayyan and according to the narration of Hujjaj, he said: "I establish the prayer, the last Isha prayer." Then a man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have a need." So the Prophet stood with him and conversed with him until some of the people dozed off, then he came and prayed and did not mention that they performed ablution.

Uthman replied: Prayer is the best of what people do. So, if they do good, do good with them, and if they do evil, avoid their evil. And the other narrations regarding this meaning have already passed in the matter of leadership.

[Machine] That his father and a group of his people went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the people embraced Islam to learn the Quran. When they finished their request, they said, "Who will lead us in prayer or pray for us?" He said, "The one among you who is most knowledgeable in the Quran will lead you in prayer." They went back to their people and asked, but they did not find anyone who had memorized or learned more of the Quran than he had. At that time, he was a young boy and had a mole on his face. They brought him forward, and he led them in prayer. I have not witnessed a leader of a congregation committing any sin, and I was their leader until this day." Mus'ab bin Habib said, "He prayed the funeral prayer for them and in their mosques until he left. The early ones are like those who sacrifice a camel, then like those who sacrifice a cow, then like those who sacrifice a sheep, until mention is made of a hen and an egg. And it was narrated to us by Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz, who was informed by Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ya'qub, who was informed by Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Al-Husayn, who was informed by Muhammad ibn Hajjaj Al-Warraq, who said that Yahya ibn Yahya informed us that Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah mentioned it in a similar manner, except that he said, "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'They record the names of people at their homes, the early ones first. Whoever takes bath due to sexual defilement on Friday and goes out (for Friday prayer), is treated like one who offers a camel as sacrifice; he who goes out in the second instance as one who offers a cow; he who goes out in the third instance is treated as one who offers horned cow ; he who goes out in the fourth instance is treated as one who offers hen ; he who goes out in the fifth instance is treated as one who offers an egg.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever takes a bath, purifies themselves, cleans themselves, applies oil or perfume, goes early for Jumma prayer, sits close, listens attentively, their sins from one Jumma to the next will be forgiven, and their reward will be extended for three days. And whoever touches the pebbles has indeed transgressed."
[Machine] "Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , he said: Whoever performs Ghusl (ritual bathing) and purifies themselves on the day of Friday, then dresses in their best attire, comes early to the prayer, gets close to the Imam (leader) and listens attentively without speaking, they will receive the reward of a whole year's worth of prayers and fasting."

4.69 [Machine] The Virtue of Walking to Friday Prayer
[Machine] Al-Shafi'i is reasonable, as indeed the effort in this matter is work, not effort on foot. Allah the Almighty said: "Indeed, your efforts are diverse" [Al-Layl 4]. And He said: "And your effort shall be appreciated" [Al-Insan 22]. And He said: "And whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts effort for it as it should be exerted while he is a believer" [Al-Isra 19]. And He said: "And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives" [An-Najm 39]. And He said: "And when he turns away [from you], he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein" [Al-Baqarah 205]. The Sheikh said, and it has been narrated from Abu Dharr what confirms this.

[Machine] I went to the mosque on Friday and met Aba Dhar. While I was walking, I heard the call to prayer, so I hastened my pace, following the words of Allah: "When the call is proclaimed for the Salah on Friday, come to the remembrance of Allah" (Surah Al-Jumu'ah, verse 9). I was pulled by a force that almost made me stumble, and he said, "Have we not strived enough?" The sheikh replied, "And in the Sunnah, all of this is confirmed."
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: When the iqamah is pronounced for prayer, do not come to it running, but come walking(slowly). You should observe tranquility. The part of the prayer you get(along with the imam) offer it, and the part you miss complete it (afterwards). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 572)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the call to prayer is made, do not come to it rushing and running, but come to it calmly and with tranquility. Whatever part of the prayer you catch, perform it, and whatever you miss, complete it. And if any one of you is in prayer, he is indeed in prayer." 5872 Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz narrated to us, Abu Al-Nadr Al-Faqih narrated to me, Abu Al-Fadl Saleh ibn Muhammad Al-Razi narrated to me, Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated to me, Ismail ibn Jafar narrated to me, and Al-Alaa narrated from his father, from Abu Huraira, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned it with a similar narration, except that he said, "If any one of you is on his way to prayer, he is indeed in prayer."
My father said, "While we were praying with the Prophet ﷺ he heard the noise of some people. After the prayer he said, 'What is the matter?' They replied 'We were hurrying for the prayer.' He said, 'Do not make haste for the prayer, and whenever you come for the prayer, you should come with calmness, and pray whatever you get (with the people) and complete the rest which you have missed." (Using translation from Bukhārī 635)
[Machine] A man came and walked quickly until he reached the people, and he was amazed, so when he stood up to pray he said, "All praise is due to Allah, abundant, pure, and blessed praise." When the Prophet ﷺ finished the prayer, he said, "Who was the speaker? Who was the one speaking?" He said, "He has said something good, and he did not say anything harmful. O Messenger of Allah, I have reached the row and I was amazed, and my breath was still fast." He said, "I saw twelve angels racing to get ahead of one another with raising it (the praise), then he said, 'When any one of you come for the prayer, let him walk with calmness, pray what he has already caught up with, and complete what he has missed.'"

[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , the good word is a form of charity, and walking to the mosque is a form of charity. This was also narrated by Abdur-Razzaq from Ma'mar, who said in the narration: Every step taken towards the prayer is a form of charity. They both compiled it in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and it is mentioned in the last chapter of the book of Zakat, with the will of Allah.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever dirties his feet in the way of Allah, Allah will forbid the Fire from them." Abu Amr informed us that Abu Bakr informed us that Al-Qasim ibn Zakariyya narrated to us that Dawud ibn Rushayd and Abu Hamam reported to us, they said that Al-Walid ibn Muslim mentioned it in its meaning, and he said, "I heard Abu 'Abbas, and he had companionship."

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever washes on the day of Jummah (Friday), performs ghusl (ritual bath), then goes early and walks without riding, and comes close to the imam, listens attentively, and does not engage in idle talk, for every step he takes, he will be rewarded the equivalent of fasting and praying a year." Abu Bakr ibn Al-Harith Al-Asbahani, the jurist, narrated to us, he informed Abu Muhammad ibn Hayyan, who was informed by Abdan and Ibn Abi Asim and Hasan ibn Harun, who said that Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, who was informed by Ibn Al-Mubarak, who mentioned it in a similar manner, except that he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said..."

4.71 [Machine] Do not interlace his fingers when he goes out to pray.
AbuThumamah al-Hannat said that Ka'b ibn Ujrah met him while he was going to the mosque; one of the two (companions) met his companion (on his way to the mosque) And he met crossing the fingers of my both hands. He prohibited me to do so, and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said: If any of you performs ablution, and performs his ablution perfectly, and then goes out intending for the mosque, he should not cross the fingers of his hand because he is already in prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 562)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "When one of you performs ablution and then comes to the mosque, he should not interlace his fingers, as he is in a state of prayer, and likewise..."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When one of you performs ablution and then goes out for prayer, he is in a state of prayer. So, none of you should interlock his fingers after performing ablution or after entering into prayer." Shabbaba narrated from Ibn Abi Dhi'b, from Al-Maqburi, from a man from Banu Sulaym, who reported that he informed him about his father, from Ka'b, from the Prophet ﷺ who said: "None of you should contradict the fingers of his hands during prayer." And it was also narrated from a man from Banu Salim, and this narration is disputed by Sa'id, as it was reported from him like this, and it was reported from him through Ka'b, and it was reported from him through a man from Ka'b, and it was reported from him through Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet ﷺ said to Ka'b, and it was also narrated from Ibn 'Ajlan, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, and the correct opinion is that it was narrated from Ibn 'Ajlan, from Sa'id Al-Maqburiyy, according to the three different paths.
[Machine] "Do not interlace your fingers, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from interlacing our fingers during prayer. So I said, 'But I am not in prayer.' He said, 'Did you not perform ablution and come out intending to pray?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then you are in prayer.' This hadith was also narrated by 'Isa ibn Yunus from Sa'eed al-Maqburi from Abu Thumamah. The narration goes back to Sa'eed al-Maqburi from Abu Thumamah who said, 'The scholar stated regarding this that the prohibition of interlacing fingers indeed occurred during prayer, and that Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah entered the mosque while his fingers were interlaced, based on what is mentioned in the evidence. And it has been narrated from another chain of narrators from Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah with the same wording."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "O Ka'b, when you perform ablution and perfect it, then go out to the mosque, do not intertwine your fingers, for indeed you are in prayer." This hadith has a sound chain of narration, if it was Al-Hasan bin Ali Ar-Raqqi who narrated it, this is his preservation, and I did not find it in what he reported.

Whoever washed himself on Friday and applies perfume of his wife if she has one, and wears good clothes and does not step over the necks of the people (in the mosque to sit in the front row) and does not indulge in idle talk during the sermon, that will atone (for his sins) between the two Fridays. But he who indulges in idle talk and steps over the necks of people (in the mosque), that (Friday) will be for him like the noon prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 347)
