4. Friday Ṣalāh (Jumuʿah) (5/9)
[Machine] Allah, may He be glorified, said: "When the call to prayer is proclaimed on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah." (Surah Al-Jumu'ah, verse 9) And He also said: "And He is the Witness and the Witnessed."
قَالَ اللهُ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُهُ: {إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللهِ} [الجمعة: 9] وَقَالَ: {وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ}
[Machine] I have never seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ waving his hands while making supplication on the pulpit or anywhere else. But I have seen him saying this and pointing with his index finger while holding his middle finger with his thumb. The purpose of both narrations is to affirm the supplication in the sermon. It is also from the Sunnah that he does not raise his hands while making supplication in the sermon, but he only gestures with his finger. It is confirmed from Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet ﷺ extended his hands and made supplication when he sought rain during the Friday sermon. We also narrated from Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet ﷺ did not raise his hands in any of his supplications except when seeking rain, to the extent that the whiteness of his armpits could be seen. We also narrated from Al-Zuhri that he said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would deliver the Friday sermon, he would make supplication and gesture with his finger, and the people would feel at ease. This was narrated by Qurrah ibn Abdul Rahman from Al-Zuhri from Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah, but it is not authentic and Allah knows best.
4.49 [Machine] What is recommended to be read in the sermon.
[Machine] I took the Quran from the messenger of Allah ﷺ on Friday, and he was reciting it on the pulpit every Friday.
Our oven and that of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was one for two years, or for one year or for a part of a year; and I learnt" Qaf. By the Glorious Qur'an" from no other source than the tongue of Messenger of Allah ﷺ who used to recite it every Friday on the pulpit when he delivered the sermon to the people. (Using translation from Muslim 873a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with us in our homes, and our oven and his oven were the same for two or more years. I did not take (the knowledge) except from the tongue of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he used to recite it (the Qur'an) to the people every Friday when he addressed them.
[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ reciting on the pulpit, "{And they call, 'O Malik, let your Lord decide between us} [Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:77]."
[Machine] that Umar ibn Al-Khattab used to recite in his Friday sermon the verse "When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up" (Quran, 81:1) until he reaches the verse "On the Day when the earth will be changed to another earth, and so will be the heavens" (Quran, 14:48) and then he would stop.
4.50 [Machine] If the imam is surrounded, he is coerced.
[Machine] I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reciting in the prayer, but he left out something that he did not recite. A man said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, you left out a verse such and such, should you not have reminded me of it then?" He replied, "I saw that it had been abrogated."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ prayed a prayer in which he recited and became confused. When he finished, he asked Ubb ibn Ka'b, "Did you pray with us?" He answered, "Yes." The Prophet then asked, "What prevented you from correcting me?"
[Machine] We used to consult with the Imams during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .
[Machine] The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach each other about prayer.
[Machine] I was sitting in Mecca when suddenly a man by the station with a pleasant scent was praying, and behind him, a man was instructing him. And behold, it was Uthman.
[Machine] That Ibn Umar prayed Al-Maghrib (sunset prayer), and when he recited "not the path of those who have incurred Your anger nor of those who have gone astray" [Surah Al-Fatiha 1:7], he started reciting "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" [Surah Al-Fatiha 1:1] repeatedly. So I said to him, "When the shaking occurs, recite it." So when he finished, he did not reproach me for that.
[Machine] I heard Thabit Al-Bunani say, "Anas used to have a young boy stand behind him with a Quran whenever he stood up to pray. And if he had any confusion about something, he would open it (the Quran) and refer to it."
[Machine] I saw Abu Hurairah reveals something to Marwan during prayer.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Ali, I love for you what I love for myself and I dislike for you what I dislike for myself. Do not recite while you are bowing or prostrating, and do not perform the prayer while your hair is disheveled, for it is the way of Satan. Do not sit between the two prostrations, and do not play with pebbles. Do not rest your arms on your sides, and do not start the prayer before the Imam or conclude it with gold. Do not wear coarse clothing, and do not ride on camels with saddles." 5791 Abu Ali Al-Rudhaybari informed us, Abu Bakr Ibn Dasa said, Abu Dawood said, Abu Ishaq did not hear except from Al-Harith four hadiths and this is not among them. The sheikh said, "Al-Harith's hadith is not used for evidentiary purposes." It is also narrated from Ali that it does not indicate the permissibility of interrupting the Imam.
[Machine] "Abu Ubayd, this is how I remember him, then I was informed about him later on that he never doubted when the Imam would feed you, so feed him. And Sufyan ath-Thawri narrated this from Abdul-A'la from Abu Abdur-Rahman from his statement similar to the first one and added, 'We asked, how can we feed him?' He said, 'When you have food, but he remains silent, open it for him.'"
[Machine] "To offer assistance to the Imam when he asks for it, I asked Abu Abdul Rahman, 'How can I assist the Imam?' He replied, 'By remaining silent.'"
4.51 [Machine] The Imam recites the verse of prostration (Sajdah) on the pulpit. The conversation of Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri about the Prophet ﷺ has passed in the chapters of prostration while reciting.
[Machine] "Omar, upon your mission, Allah has not obligated us to recite it except as we please. He read it but did not prostrate, and he prevented them from prostrating."
[Machine] Ammaaran read from the minbar, "When the sky splits on Friday, He will descend and prostrate."
4.52 [Machine] How should the sermon be?
[Machine] He heard him saying the sermon of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on Friday, praising Allah and praising Him, then saying in response to that, his voice became louder, his anger intensified, and his cheeks reddened as if he were warning of an approaching army, saying "May morning or evening be upon you." Then he said, "I have been sent and the Hour is like these two fingers," and he pointed with his middle finger and the finger that follows the thumb. Then he said, "The best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, and the worst of matters are innovations, and every innovation is misguidance. Whoever abandons wealth, it is for his family, and whoever leaves a debt or a loss, it is for me and upon me." These words were narrated by Ibn Abi 'Uways, 5799. Abu Salih ibn Abi Tahir told us that my grandfather Yahya ibn Mansur narrated to me, that Ahmed ibn Salamah told me, that Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab narrated to me, that Khalid ibn Makhlad narrated to me, that Sulaiman ibn Bilal narrated to me, that Ja'far ibn Muhammad narrated to me from his father that Jaber ibn Abdullah said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ giving a sermon on Friday, and he mentioned [similar words] like these."
"In his Khutbah the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to praise Allah as He deserves to be praised, then he would say: 'Whomsoever Allah (SWT) guides, none can lead him astray, and whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide. The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire.' Then he said: 'The Hour and I have been sent like these two.' Whenever he mentioned the Hour, his cheeks would turn red, and he would raise his voice and become angry, as if he were warning of an approaching army and saying: 'An army is coming to attack you in the morning, or in the evening!' (Then he said): 'Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his family, and whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, then these are my responsibility, and I am the most entitled to take care of the believers.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1578)
Dimad came to Mecca and he belonged to the tribe of Azd Shanu'a, and he used to protect the person who was under the influence of charm. He heard the foolish people of Mecca say that Muhammad ﷺ was under the spell. Upon this he said: If 1 were to come across this man, Allah might cure him at my hand. He met him and said: Muhammad, I can protect (one) who is under the influence of charm, and Allah cures one whom He so desires at my hand. Do you desire (this)? Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, ask His help; and he whom Allah guides aright there is none to lead him astray, and he who is led astray there is none to guide him, and I bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah, He is One, having no partner with Him, and that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger. Now after this he (Dimad) said: Repeat these words of yours before me, and the messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated these to him thrice; and he said I have heard the words of soothsayers and the words of magicians, and the words of poets, but I have never heard such words as yours, and they reach the depth (of the ocean of eloquence) ; bring forth your hand so that I should take oath of fealty to you on Islam. So he took an oath of allegiance to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: It (this allegiance of yours) is on behalf of your people too. He said: It is on behalf of my people too. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an expedition and the flying column passed by his people. The leader of the flying column said to the detachment: Did you find anything from these people? One of the people said: I found a utensil for water. Upon this he (the commander) said: Return it, for he is one of the people of Dimad. (Using translation from Muslim 868)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the address in case of some need: Praise be to Allah from Whom we ask help and pardon, and in Whom we take refuge from the evils within ourselves. He whom Allah guides has no one who can lead him astray, and he whom He leads astray has no one to guide him. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Apostle. "You who believe,...fear Allah by Whom you ask your mutual rights, and reverence the wombs. Allah has been watching you." ..."you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared, and die only as Muslims" ...."you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared, and die only as Muslims"....."you who believe, fear Allah and say what is true. He will make your deeds sound, and forgive your sins. He who obeys Allah and His Apostle has achieved a mighty success." The narrator, Muhammad ibn Sulayman, did mention the word "inna" (verily). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2118)
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed, he would say: Praise be to Allah, from Whom we seek help and pardon, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls. He whom Allah guide has no one who can lead him astray, and he whom He leads astray has no one to guide him. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and apostle. He sent him before the coming of the last hour with truth giving good tidings and warning. He who obeys Allah and His Apostle follows the right path; and he who disobeys them shall harm none except himself, and he will not harm Allah in the least. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1097)
[Machine] About the testimony of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Friday, Ibn Shihab said, "Verily, all praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Him from the evil within ourselves. Whoever Allah guides, no one can lead astray, and whoever is led astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. He sent him with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a Warner before the Hour. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed been guided, and whoever turns away has only caused loss to himself. We ask Allah, our Lord, to make us among those who obey Him and His Messenger, to follow His pleasure, and to avoid His anger. Indeed, we are with Him and for Him." Ibn Shihab said, "We have also heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that whenever he delivered a sermon, everything that was promised was near and there was no delay to what was promised. Allah does not hasten anything for anyone, nor does He delay anything for the sake of people's desires. People may desire something, but Allah desires something else. Whatever Allah wills happens, and if people dislike it, it will not be averted, and if people desire it, it will not be achieved unless by the permission of Allah." Ibn Shihab also said, "Umar ibn Al-Khattab used to say in his sermons, 'Success is for those who are protected from desires, greed, and anger, and there is nothing better in terms of speech than truth. Whoever lies causes trouble, and whoever causes trouble destroys you. The ultimate ruin of a person is his transgression. He was created from dust and will return to dust. Today he is alive, but tomorrow he will be dead. Do deeds day by day, and beware of the supplication of the oppressed. Consider yourselves among the dead."

Verily, it leads him towards goodness. As for the one who lies, it leads to his destruction." Then he mentioned what comes after that.'

[Machine] I was riding behind my father on the departure and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was delivering a sermon at the stone pillar. He said, "Praise be to Allah, we praise Him, seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness. We bear witness that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. I advise you to have Taqwa (consciousness of Allah) on every day I live." They said, "This day." He said, "Which month shall I sanctify?" They said, "This month." He said, "Which land shall I sanctify?" They said, "This land." He said, "Indeed, your blood and wealth are sacred to one another, as sacred as this day of yours in this month of yours in this land of yours."

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "O people, the world is only a temporary provision in which the righteous and the wicked eat from. And the Hereafter is a true promise in which a just ruler will govern, where truth will prevail and falsehood will be nullified."
[Machine] The speech of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was: "Verily, this worldly life is a present, in which both the righteous and the wicked partake in. And surely the Hereafter is a true promise, wherein a capable king will decide. Know that all goodness is in its entirety within Paradise, and all evil is in its entirety within the Fire. So work while you are cautious of Allah, and know that you will be presented with your deeds. And indeed, you will meet your Lord, so whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it."

[Machine] A man delivered a speech in the presence of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said, "Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger is on the right path, and whoever disobeys them has gone astray." Upon hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ said, "What a terrible speaker you are! Say, whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has gone astray." This is the wording of a narration by Waki' but Al-'Adani did not mention that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Say, whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has gone astray."

[Machine] An ink came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Muhammad, you are a good people, if it were not for you associating (partners with Allah)." He ﷺ said, "Glory be to Allah, what do you mean by that?" Then he said, 'You are a good people, if it were not for you saying, 'So Allah willed and so-and-so willed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ waited, then he said, 'Whoever says, 'So Allah willed,' let him add 'then (do as you wish).'

[Machine] A man came on Friday while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering a sermon, and he asked him, "Did you pray?" He replied, "No." So the Prophet said, "Stand up and pray."
[Machine] I saw Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri come and Marwan was giving a sermon. Abu Sa'id stood up and prayed two units of prayer. The guards came to sit him down, but he refused to sit until he prayed two units of prayer. When we finished the prayer, we approached him and said, "O Abu Sa'id, they almost did something to you." He said, "I would never have left it for anything after I saw it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while a man came and he was giving a sermon. He entered the mosque in a disheveled state. He said, 'Have you prayed?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Then pray two units of prayer.' Then he urged the people to give charity, so they threw their garments and the man gave two garments to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . When the next Friday came, a man came and the Prophet ﷺ was giving a sermon. He said to him, 'Have you prayed?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Then pray two units of prayer.' Then he urged the people to give charity, so one man threw one of his garments. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ shouted and said, 'Take it.' So he took it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Look at this person who comes with a disheveled appearance on that Friday.' I commanded the people to give charity, so they threw their garments and I gave him two garments from them." When this Friday came, I commanded the people to give charity, so he came and threw one of his garments. Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrates this hadith from Ibn 'Ajlan with a similar meaning, from the narration of Ibn 'Uyainah from him.

[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was giving a sermon. I said, "O Messenger of Allah! There is a stranger who has come to ask about his religion, but he does not know what his religion is." So, the Prophet ﷺ turned towards me and left his sermon. A chair made of iron was brought, and he started teaching me from what Allah had taught him. Then, he returned to his sermon and completed it. 5818. Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, Ibrahim ibn Ismail al-Qari' narrated to us, Al-Hasan ibn Sufyan ibn Bayyaanaboor narrated to us, Shayban ibn Farrookh narrated to us, Sulaiman ibn al-Mughirah mentioned it in its meaning.

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering a Khutbah to us when Al-Hasan and Al-Husain [peace be upon them] came, wearing red shirts, walking and falling down. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended from the Minbar and carried them, and placed them in front of him. Then he said: 'Allah spoke the Truth: Indeed, your wealth and your children are a trial (64:15). I looked at these two children walking and falling down, and I could not bear patiently anymore until I interrupted my talk and picked them up." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3774)
[Machine] My father stood in the sun and the Prophet ﷺ was delivering a sermon, so he commanded for him to be brought closer to the shade.
Qais quoted his father as saying that he (his father) came when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was addressing. He stood in the sun. He ordered him (to shift) and he shifted to the shade. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4822)
[Machine] "In the Prophet's ﷺ sermon on Friday, when he ascended the pulpit, he said 'Sit down.' Ibn Mas'ud heard this and sat down, and then he saw him and said, 'Come here, O Abdullah ibn Mas'ud.' And it was narrated by 'Amr ibn Dinar from 'Ata' who transmitted it."

4.56 [Machine] Listening to the Sermon
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act." (Using translation from Bukhārī 934)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says to his companion on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon, 'Be silent,' then he has spoken in vain."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When a man tells his companion to be silent while the Imam is delivering the sermon, then he has surely spoken nonsense."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When you tell your companion to be quiet while the imam is giving the sermon on Friday, then you have engaged in idle talk." He said, "And Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah narrated to us from Abu Zinad, from Al-A'raj, from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ with a similar meaning, except that he said 'you have engaged in idle talk.' Ibn 'Uyaynah said, 'You have engaged in idle talk in the language of Abu Hurairah.'" Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz narrated to us, Muhammad bin Ya'qub narrated to us, from Ahmad bin Sahl bin Bahr, from Ibn Abi 'Umar, from Sufyan, and he mentioned it in a similar manner, except that he said, 'Abu Zinad said, 'It is the language of Abu Hurairah, and it is idle talk.''

[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: "When you say to your companion, 'Be quiet on Friday', then you have already spoken frivolously about yourself."
