4. Friday Ṣalāh (Jumuʿah)
That he heard Jabir bin ʿAbdullah saying, "The roof of the Mosque was built over trunks of datepalms working as pillars. When the Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon, he used to stand by one of those trunks till the pulpit was made for him, and he used it instead. Then we heard the trunk sending a sound like of a pregnant she-camel till the Prophet ﷺ came to it, and put his hand over it, then it became quiet." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3585)
Some people came to Sahl b. Sa'd and began to differ about the wood of which the (Prophet's pulpit was made. He (Sahl b. Sa'd) said: By Allah, I know of which wood it is made and who made it, and the day when I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seated himself on it on the first day. I said to him: O Abu Abbas (kunyah of Sabl b. Sa'd), narrate to us (all these facts), He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a person to a woman asking her to allow her slave, a carpenter, to work on woods (to prepare a pulpit) so that I should talk to the people (sitting on it). Abu Hazim said: He (Sahl b. Sa'd) pointed out the name of (that lady) that day. So he (the carpenter) made (a pulpit) with these three steps. Then the Messengerof Allah ﷺ commanded it to be placed here (where it is lying now). It was fashioned out of the wood of al-Ghaba. And I saw the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) standing upon it and glorifying Allah and the people also glorified Allah after him, while he was on the pulpit. He then raised (his head from prostration) and stepped back (on his heels) till he prostrated himself at the base of pulpit, and then returned (to the former place and this movement of one or two steps continued) till the prayer was complete. He then turned towards the people and said: O people, I have done it so that you should follow me and learn (my mode of) prayer. (Using translation from Muslim 544a)
The Prophet ﷺ used to stand by a tree or a date-palm on Friday. Then an Ansari woman or man said. "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall we make a pulpit for you?" He replied, "If you wish." So they made a pulpit for him and when it was Friday, he proceeded towards the pulpit (for delivering the sermon). The datepalm cried like a child! The Prophet ﷺ descended (the pulpit) and embraced it while it continued moaning like a child being quietened. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It was crying for (missing) what it used to hear of religious knowledge given near to it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3584)
[Machine] When the messenger of Allah ﷺ became old and his voice became weak, he said, "Let us not have a pulpit that you have to carry or assemble or a word that strains your bones for me. Instead, make for me two or three steps to sit on." So the Prophet ﷺ ascended the pulpit and leaned against a trunk that was in the mosque. Whenever the messenger of Allah ﷺ would deliver a sermon, he would lean against it. Then, the Prophet ﷺ descended and hugged it and said something unknown to me. Then he ascended the pulpit. The pillars of the mosque were trunks and its roofs were made of palm leaves." Al-Bukhari narrated from Abu Asim, who narrated it from Ibn Abi Rawwad, and he mentioned it.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give sermons leaning against a trunk. When the pulpit was built, the trunk longed for him, so he went to it and hugged it.
