4. Friday Ṣalāh (Jumuʿah) (4/9)
[Machine] Allah, may He be glorified, said: "When the call to prayer is proclaimed on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah." (Surah Al-Jumu'ah, verse 9) And He also said: "And He is the Witness and the Witnessed."
قَالَ اللهُ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُهُ: {إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللهِ} [الجمعة: 9] وَقَالَ: {وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ}
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to recite Surah Al-Jumu'ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun on Fridays, and he would recite Surah At-Tanzil in the Fajr prayer on the day of Friday.
What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited on Friday after reciting the Surah al-Jumu'ah (62). He replied: He used to recite, "Had the story of overwhelming event reached you ?" (88). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1123)
" Has there reached..." (Surah lxxxviii, ). (Using translation from Muslim 878c)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite on Fridays the Surah of Sabbihisma Rabbikal A'la and Al-Ghashiyah. And when the day of Friday and the day of Eid coincided, he would recite them both on that Friday and Eid.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the Friday prayer: "Glorify the name of your most high Lord" (Surah 87) and Has the story of the overwhelming event reached you? (Surah 88). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1125)
4.34 [Machine] Reading in the Prayers of Fajr on Friday
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to recite on the day of Friday in the Fajr prayer the chapter "Alif Lam Meem Tanzeel" and the chapter "Has the news of the overwhelming event reached you, and in Friday prayers the chapter Al-Jumu'ah and the chapter Al-Munafiqoon".
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the Fajr prayer on Friday the revelation of Sajda (Surah Al-Sajda) and has there come to the human being...
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite the following in the Fajr prayer of Friday, "Alif, Lam, Mim, Tanzil" (Suratas- Sajda #32) and "Hal-ata-ala-l-Insani" (i.e. Surah-Ad-Dahr #76). (Using translation from Bukhārī 891)
4.35 [Machine] Reading in the prayers of Maghrib and Isha on Friday night
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the Maghrib prayer of Friday night "Say: O disbelievers" and "Say: He is Allah, the One". And he used to recite in the Isha prayer of the last part of Friday night the Surah Al-Jumu'ah and Al-Munafiqun.
4.36 [Machine] Who has caught a rak'ah of the Friday prayer
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever catches a unit of prayer has indeed caught the prayer." In another narration by Al-Qa'nabi from Malik, and a narration by Sufyan, "Whoever catches a unit of prayer has indeed caught the prayer."
If anyone obtains a rak'ah in the prayer (along with the imam), he has obtained the whole prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1121)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever catches one unit (rak'ah) of the prayer with the imam has indeed caught the whole prayer."
[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "Whoever catches a unit of prayer has indeed caught it." Al-Zuhri said, "This is the correct narration and it is narrated by the congregation from Al-Zuhri. In the narration of Ma'mar, it indicates that the wording of the hadith regarding prayer is absolute, and in its general sense, it includes the Friday prayer as it includes other prayers. Usamah bin Zaid narrated the hadith from Al-Zuhri specifically regarding the Friday prayer."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever catches a rak'ah (unit of prayer) of the Friday prayer, let him pray another one." It has also been narrated from Salih bin Abi Al-Akhdar from Az-Zuhri.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever catches a rakah from Jumu'ah prayer, let him pray another rakah with it. If he catches them sitting, let him pray four. It is narrated from another perspective other than that of Al-Zuhri, which we have mentioned in the difference of opinion. It is also narrated from Abu Salih from Abu Hurairah, in a statement attributed to him."
[Machine] If you catch the Friday prayer with one unit, then add another to it, and if you catch them sitting, then pray four followed by Ayoub from Nafi.
[Machine] If you catch one unit of Friday prayer, then add another to it. But if you miss the bowing, then perform four units of prayer.
[Machine] About Zakariyya and those who managed to catch up with the people while they were sitting, he prayed four units (rak'ahs). Al-A'mash narrated it from Abu Ishaq. Then, if you miss the rukoo' (bowing), pray four units (rak'ahs) and Hubayrah was not mentioned in the chain of narrators.
4.37 [Machine] The compilation of the etiquette of sermons.
4.38 [Machine] The Imam greets the people when he ascends the pulpit before sitting down.
It was narrated from Jabir that whenever the Prophet ﷺ ascended the pulpit he would greet (the people with Salam). (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1109)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to greet those who were sitting near him when he approached his pulpit on Fridays. Then, when he ascended the pulpit, he faced the people and greeted them. Abu Bakr ibn al-Harith al-Faqih narrated to us that Abu Muhammad ibn Hayyan narrated to us that Ibn Abi 'Asim narrated to us that 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us that Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us from a man who heard it from Nafi'. He mentioned it in essence, except that he said, "When he ascended the pulpit, he greeted the people before sitting down." 'Isa ibn 'Abdullah ibn al-Hakam ibn Nu'man ibn Bashir Abu Musa al-Ansari alone mentioned it. Abu Sa'id said, "Abu Ahmad ibn 'Adi generalizes what he narrates and does not verify it." The Shaykh said, "It is narrated from Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn Zubair, then from 'Umar ibn 'Abdul Aziz."
4.39 [Machine] The Imam sits on the pulpit until the Muadhin finishes the call to prayer, then he stands to deliver the sermon.
[Machine] On the first day of Friday, it was the first time that the Imam sat on the pulpit during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , as well as during the time of Abu Bakr and Umar. When it was during the caliphate of Uthman and the number of people increased, he ordered the third adhan to be called and it was called in Al-Zawraa. The matter remained steadfast on that in 5745. Abu Amr Al-Adibi informed us that Abu Bakr Al-Ismaili informed us that Al-Hassan ibn Sufyan told us that Habban narrated from Ibn Al-Mubarak, from Yunus, who mentioned it in a similar manner except that he said, "Indeed, the adhan on Friday used to start when the Imam sat on the pulpit on Friday. Uthman ordered the third adhan on Friday, and the rest is the same."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to sit on the pulpit when he went out on Fridays and Bilal would call the adhan.
The Prophet ﷺ used to deliver two sermons. When he ascended the minbar (pulpit), he would sit until the muʾadhin finished the call to prayer. Then he would stand and deliver the sermon. Afterward, he would sit and remain silent for a while, and then stand again and deliver the second sermon.
It has been narrated to us through the ḥadīth of Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Ṭalhah from Anas b. Mālik regarding the story of the pulpit. He said, "A minbar with two steps was built for him, and he would sit on the third step. When the Prophet ﷺ sat on it, the trunk of the date-palm tree moaned."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ ascended the pulpit on Friday and said to the people, "Sit down." Ibn Mas'ud heard this while he was at the gate of the mosque, so he sat down. The Prophet ﷺ then said to him, "Come, O Ibn Mas'ud, and listen to what I am saying."
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit on Friday, he said, "Sit down." Ibn Mas'ood heard this and sat by the door of the mosque. The Prophet ﷺ saw him and said, "Come here, O Abdullah bin Mas'ood." Likewise, it has been narrated from Mu'adh bin Mu'adh, Ibn Juraij, and it was also said by 'Ata. The Prophet ﷺ saw Ibn Mas'ood leaving the mosque while he was delivering the sermon and said, "Come here, O Abdullah bin Mas'ood."

[Machine] Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We, a group of seven or nine, went to visit the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sought his permission to enter. He granted us permission and we entered. We greeted him and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have come to you so that you may supplicate to Allah for us or make a good supplication for us. He supplicated for us with goodness, ordered for us to be provided with dates, and the matter was fulfilled as such. Then I stayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for some days, during which we witnessed the Friday prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and leaned on a bow or a stick. He praised Allah and glorified Him with light, good, and blessed words. Then he said: O people, you are not able to do everything you have been commanded, but try to do good deeds, approach (good) deeds, and receive glad tidings. This is the way to achieve success."
[Machine] Abdulrahman ibn Saad ibn Ammar ibn Saad, the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , narrated that his father told him on the authority of his forefathers that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to deliver his sermons while leaning on a bow during times of war, and while leaning on a stick during Friday sermons.
[Machine] I said to 'Ata', "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stand with a staff when he delivered a sermon?" He said, "Yes, and he used to lean on it for support."
4.42 [Machine] Increasing the volume of the sermon
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , when he would give a sermon, his eyes would turn red, his voice would become loud, and his anger would intensify, as if he was warning of an approaching army. He would say, "May the morning be pleasant for you, and may the evening be pleasant for you." He would say, "I have been sent with the Hour, like these two fingers." He would separate his index finger and middle finger. He would say, "The best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of affairs are the newly invented ones, and every innovation is a misguidance." Then he would say, "I am more entitled to every believer than his own self. Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his family, and whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, it is upon me."
[Machine] "When the Prophet ﷺ mentioned the Hour, his anger would intensify, his voice would become louder, and his cheeks would turn red as if he were a warner of an army that had attacked in the morning and reached you in the evening. Ali ibn Abadan narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar narrated to us, Ismail al-Qadi narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us, Sufyan mentioned it briefly."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a sermon and said, "I have warned you about the fire (of Hell) to the extent that if it were within my reach now, I would make everyone in the marketplace hear it until the cloak on his shoulder falls down due to the intensity of his fear."
4.43 [Machine] What is recommended for clarifying speech, reciting it in a melodious manner, and avoiding hastiness in it.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , did not speak in a way similar to your speech. His words were clear and precise, and everyone who heard him remembered them.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ did not recite words like your recitation. Instead, when he spoke he spoke clearly and distinctly, explaining his words for those who heard him, and it was preserved through this chain of narration.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke in a distinct and leisurely manner. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4838)
4.44 [Machine] What is recommended in terms of conciseness in speech and avoiding unnecessary elaboration
[Machine] I used to pray with the Prophet ﷺ, and his prayers were concise and his sermons were concise as well.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not lengthen the sermon on Friday. He would say a few words. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1107)
'Ammar delivered to us the sermon. It was short and eloquent. When he (, Ammir) descended (from the pulpit) we said to him: 0 Abd al-Yaqzn, you have delivered a short and eloquent sermon. Would that you had lengthened (the sermon). He said: I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: The lengthening of prayer by a man and the shortness of the sermon is the sign of his understanding (of faith). So lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon, for there is charm (in precise) expression. (Using translation from Muslim 869)
[Machine] Abdullah said, "Indeed, the length of the prayer and the shortness of the sermon are indications of a person's understanding (fIQh)."
[Machine] Lengthen this prayer and shorten this sermon, meaning the Friday prayer. And it was also narrated from another perspective by Ammar, raised briefly.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to shorten the speeches. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1106)
4.45 [Machine] What is used as evidence for the obligation of praising (Allah) in the Friday sermon?
[Machine] The sermon of the Messenger of Allah on Friday praises and thanks Allah and mentions the remainder of the speech. Abu Al-Hasan ibn Abdan informed us, Anba Ahmed ibn Ubaid narrated to us, Ismail al-Qazi narrated to us, Ibn Abi Uwais and Al-Farawi said, Sulaiman ibn Bilal narrated from Ja'far, from his father, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, that he heard him say that, and he had already...
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Every matter of importance that is not begun with praise and thanks to Allah will have its support cut off." This report was narrated by Yunus ibn Yazid, 'Uqail ibn Khalid, Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah, and Sa'id ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, all from Az-Zuhri, from the Prophet ﷺ with a connected chain.
The Prophet ﷺ said: Every sermon which does not contain a tashahhud is like a hand cut off. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4841)
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ said, "Every sermon that does not contain a testimony is like a deceitful hand." Muslim said, "Indeed, Yahya ibn Ma'in spoke about Abi Hisham in this matter."
4.46 [Machine] What indicates the obligation of mentioning the Prophet ﷺ in the sermon? Allah, may He be glorified, said: "And We have raised high your remembrance." [Surah Al-Sharh: 4]
[Machine] In his statement "{And We have raised your remembrance for you}" [Al-Sharh 4], he said, "I am not remembered except that you are remembered, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." And it is mentioned from Muhammad ibn Ka'b Al-Quradhi similar to that.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Any people who gather and do not mention their Lord or send blessings upon their Prophet ﷺ, will be in regret on the Day of Judgment. If Allah wills, He will punish them, and if He wills, He will forgive them."
4.47 [Machine] What can be inferred from him preaching to them in his sermon and advising them to fear Allah and reading something from the Quran
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to have two sermons in which he would sit between them and recite the Quran and remind the people. In the narration of Musaddad, he would recite without a "waaw" (a letter of the Arabic alphabet). Muslim narrated this in his authentic compilation from Yahya ibn Yahya and others.
4.48 [Machine] What can be inferred from his sermon?
Allah, disfigure these hands! I have seen Messenger of Allah ﷺ gesture no more than this with his hands, and he pointed with his forefinger. (Using translation from Muslim 873c)
Bishr bin Marwan raised his hands on Friday on the minbar, and 'Umarah bin Ruwaibah condemned him and said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did no more than this,' and he pointed with his forefinger. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1412)
