4. Friday Ṣalāh (Jumuʿah) (3/9)
[Machine] Allah, may He be glorified, said: "When the call to prayer is proclaimed on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah." (Surah Al-Jumu'ah, verse 9) And He also said: "And He is the Witness and the Witnessed."
قَالَ اللهُ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُهُ: {إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللهِ} [الجمعة: 9] وَقَالَ: {وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ}
[Machine] We used to gather with the Prophet ﷺ after the sun had set, then we would return and track the booty.
[Machine] He asked Jabir ibn Abdullah when the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to pray Jumu'ah. Jabir replied, "He used to pray, then we would go to our camels to give them some rest, meaning the grazing." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us that Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us that Muhammad ibn Nadir ibn Salamah ibn al-Jarud narrated to us, who narrated from Abdullah ibn Abdul Rahman al-Darimi, who narrated from Yahya ibn Hassan, who narrated from Sulaiman ibn Bilal, who narrated from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, who mentioned the hadith in a similar way and added that when the sun sets.
[Machine] We used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and then we would return and rest our legs. Hasan said, "I asked Ja'far bin Muhammad, 'At what time is that?'" He replied, "When the sun sets."
4.21 [Machine] The Benefits of Hastening the Friday Prayer When Its Time Begins
[Machine] We used to pray with the Prophet ﷺ on Fridays, but there was no shade for the walls.
We used to offer the Friday prayer along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and return (to our homes) while no shade of the walls was seen (at that time). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1085)
[Machine] We used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on Friday, then we would hasten towards the booty, and there would be nothing but the place of our feet or both our feet. In the narration of Abu Mu'awiya, then we would return and find nothing on the ground but the shade of our feet.
4.22 [Machine] Who said: "It cools down when the heat intensifies
[Machine] I heard Anas ibn Malik being called by Yazid Ad-Dabbai on a Friday, saying "O Abu Hamzah, you witnessed the prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you have also witnessed the prayer with us, so how did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform the Friday prayer?" He replied, "When the weather was cold, he would hasten to perform the prayer, and when the weather was hot, he would make it cooler with the prayer."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to pray early when it was cold, and he used to cool off with prayer when it was hot, meaning on Fridays.
[Machine] I heard Anas ibn Malik while he was sitting with the ruler, the Amir of Basra, on the bed, saying: "The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to pray when it was hot and pray when it was cold."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to perform the noon prayer early in winter and postpone it in summer. He used to pray the afternoon prayer while the sun was still white and clear. Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, Abu Ahmed Muhammad ibn Muhammad informed us, Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Faraidhi informed us, Ahmed ibn Abdur Rahman al-Kudbarani informed us, Bishr ibn Thabit al-Bazzar mentioned it and it was also mentioned by al-Bukhari.
4.23 [Machine] The time of the Adhan for Friday
[Machine] "That the call to prayer on Fridays was first initiated when the Imam would go out during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and during the time of Abu Bakr and during the time of Umar when the Imam would go out, and when the prayer started until the time of Uthman when the people increased, so the third call to prayer was added on top of the minaret and it remained until the hour."
4.24 [Machine] Friday Prayer, half of the day, before and after it, until the Imam leaves.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "Whoever takes a bath on the day of Friday, wears his best clothes, applies perfume if he has it, and does not harm or push others, then prays as much as Allah wills. When the imam comes out, he should remain silent. That will serve as an expiation until the next Friday."
[Machine] He said that the exit of the imam interrupts the prayer and his talking interrupts the conversation.
[Machine] "And that his speech interrupts the conversation and that they used to talk on Fridays. And Umar was sitting on the pulpit, so when the muezzin stopped, Umar stood up and no one spoke until he finished both sermons. Then when the prayer was established and Umar descended, they spoke."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The Imam's entrance for the Friday prayer means he interrupts his prayer and his speech interrupts the speech. And this is a grave mistake. For indeed, the
The Prophet ﷺ disapproved of the offering of prayer at the meridian except on Friday. The Hell-fire is kindled except on Friday. Abu Dawud said: This is a mursal tradition (i.e. the successor is narrating it directly from the Prophet). Mujahid is older than Abu al-Khalil, and Abu al-Khalil did not hear (any tradition from) Abu Qatadah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1083)
4.25 [Machine] Who entered the mosque on Friday and the Imam was on the pulpit, but did not perform two units of prayer
[Machine] A man entered, and the Prophet ﷺ was delivering a sermon. The man asked, "Did you pray?" The Prophet replied, "No." The man said, "Pray two units (rak'ah)." And Sufyan narrated to us from Abu Zubair from Jabir, who said, "And he was wearing a garment from Sulayk Al-Ghatafani."
[Machine] Jabir ibn Abdullah heard a man enter the mosque while the Messenger of Allah was giving a Friday sermon. He asked, "O so-and-so, did you perform the prayer?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then pray two rak'ahs."
Have you observed two rak'ahs? He said: No. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Stand and observe them (Using translation from Muslim 875f)
[Machine] Sulayk al-Ghatafani came while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the Friday sermon and he (Sulayk) said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ , did you pray the two Rak'ahs?" He (the Messenger of Allah) replied, "No." He (Sulayk) said, "Get up and pray two Rak'ahs, then make them brief." He also said, "When any one of you comes while the Imam is delivering the sermon, he should pray two Rak'ahs and make them brief." This is a wording attributed to 'Isa bin Yunus.
[Machine] Abu Said, I wouldn't have left them for anything after what I saw from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I saw a man enter the mosque in a dirty garment while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Friday sermon. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Did you pray, O so-and-so?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Offer two rak'ahs and then enter during the second sermon."
4.26 [Machine] Whoever enters the mosque must not sit until they perform two units of prayer.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When any of you enters the mosque, let them not sit down until they have prayed two units (rak'at)."
I entered the mosque, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been sitting among people, and I also sat down among them. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What prevented you from offering two rak'ahs (of Nafl prayer) before sitting down? I said: Messenger of Allah, I saw you sitting and people sitting (around you and I, therefore, sat in your company). He (the Holy Prophet) then said: When anyone among you enters the mosque, he should not sit till he has observed two rak'ahs. (Using translation from Muslim 714b)
4.27 [Machine] The position of the imam in the sermon.
That he heard Jabir bin ʿAbdullah saying, "The roof of the Mosque was built over trunks of datepalms working as pillars. When the Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon, he used to stand by one of those trunks till the pulpit was made for him, and he used it instead. Then we heard the trunk sending a sound like of a pregnant she-camel till the Prophet ﷺ came to it, and put his hand over it, then it became quiet." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3585)
Some people came to Sahl b. Sa'd and began to differ about the wood of which the (Prophet's pulpit was made. He (Sahl b. Sa'd) said: By Allah, I know of which wood it is made and who made it, and the day when I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seated himself on it on the first day. I said to him: O Abu Abbas (kunyah of Sabl b. Sa'd), narrate to us (all these facts), He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a person to a woman asking her to allow her slave, a carpenter, to work on woods (to prepare a pulpit) so that I should talk to the people (sitting on it). Abu Hazim said: He (Sahl b. Sa'd) pointed out the name of (that lady) that day. So he (the carpenter) made (a pulpit) with these three steps. Then the Messengerof Allah ﷺ commanded it to be placed here (where it is lying now). It was fashioned out of the wood of al-Ghaba. And I saw the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) standing upon it and glorifying Allah and the people also glorified Allah after him, while he was on the pulpit. He then raised (his head from prostration) and stepped back (on his heels) till he prostrated himself at the base of pulpit, and then returned (to the former place and this movement of one or two steps continued) till the prayer was complete. He then turned towards the people and said: O people, I have done it so that you should follow me and learn (my mode of) prayer. (Using translation from Muslim 544a)

The Prophet ﷺ used to stand by a tree or a date-palm on Friday. Then an Ansari woman or man said. "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall we make a pulpit for you?" He replied, "If you wish." So they made a pulpit for him and when it was Friday, he proceeded towards the pulpit (for delivering the sermon). The datepalm cried like a child! The Prophet ﷺ descended (the pulpit) and embraced it while it continued moaning like a child being quietened. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It was crying for (missing) what it used to hear of religious knowledge given near to it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3584)
[Machine] When the messenger of Allah ﷺ became old and his voice became weak, he said, "Let us not have a pulpit that you have to carry or assemble or a word that strains your bones for me. Instead, make for me two or three steps to sit on." So the Prophet ﷺ ascended the pulpit and leaned against a trunk that was in the mosque. Whenever the messenger of Allah ﷺ would deliver a sermon, he would lean against it. Then, the Prophet ﷺ descended and hugged it and said something unknown to me. Then he ascended the pulpit. The pillars of the mosque were trunks and its roofs were made of palm leaves." Al-Bukhari narrated from Abu Asim, who narrated it from Ibn Abi Rawwad, and he mentioned it.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give sermons leaning against a trunk. When the pulpit was built, the trunk longed for him, so he went to it and hugged it.
4.28 [Machine] The obligation of the sermon and that if one does not give the sermon, they should pray Dhuhr four times, because the declaration of Jummah was taken from the action of the Prophet ﷺ, and he did not perform Jummah except with a sermon.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to deliver two sermons on Fridays, with a sitting session in between them.
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ delivered it and Mu'adh bin Jabal collected it with the Muslims. Mus'ab bin Umair said: It reached us that there is no Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) except with a sermon. So whoever does not give a sermon, then he should pray four (rak'ahs).
[Machine] If the imam does not give a sermon on Friday, then he prays four units (rak'ahs) and we have been informed about that from Ata ibn Abi Rabah and others, and from Saeed ibn Jubair who said: "Friday used to be four (rak'ahs) but the sermon was made in place of the two units of prayer."
4.29 [Machine] The sermon stands.
[Machine] "And when they see some merchandise or some amusement, they disperse to it and leave you standing." [Surah Al-Jumu'ah: 11]
Jabir b. Abdullah reported that the Apostle ﷺ was delivering the sermon on Friday in a standing posture when a caravan from Syria arrived. The people flocked towards it till no one was left (with the Holy Prophet) but twelve persons, and it was on this occasion that this verse in regard to Jumu'a was revealed." And when they see merchandise or sport. they break away to it and leave thee standing." (Using translation from Muslim 863a)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to deliver the sermon standing, then he would sit down, then stand and preach standing. If anyone tells you he preached sitting, he is lying. I swear by Allah that I offered along with more than two thousand prayers. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1093)
[Machine] He only sat down due to weakness, old age, or illness, and Allah knows best.
4.30 [Machine] The imam delivers two sermons while standing and sits between them for a casual gathering
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to deliver the Friday sermon while standing, then he would sit down, then he would stand up and deliver the sermon as they do today.
[Machine] He informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to deliver two sermons on Friday, sitting between them and delivering them while standing.
4.31 [Machine] People turn their faces towards the Imam and listen to the reminder
Once the Prophet ﷺ sat on a pulpit and we sat around him. Then he said, "The things I am afraid of most for your sake (concerning what will befall you after me) is the pleasures and splendors of the world and its beauties which will be disclosed to you." Somebody said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Can the good bring forth evil?" The Prophet ﷺ remained silent for a while. It was said to that person, "What is wrong with you? You are talking to the Prophet ﷺ while he is not talking to you." Then we noticed that he was being inspired divinely. Then the Prophet ﷺ wiped off his sweat and said, "Where is the questioner?" It seemed as if the Prophet ﷺ liked his question. Then he said, "Good never brings forth evil. Indeed it is like what grows on the banks of a water-stream which either kill or make the animals sick, except if an animal eats its fill the Khadira (a kind of vegetable) and then faces the sun, and then defecates and urinates and grazes again. No doubt this wealth is sweet and green. Blessed is the wealth of a Muslim from which he gives to the poor, the orphans and to needy travelers. (Or the Prophet said something similar to it) No doubt, whoever takes it illegally will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied, and his wealth will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1465)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to face us with his face when he ascended the pulpit or when he sat on the pulpit.
[Machine] I saw the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing it. The sheikh said, "And likewise..."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to be greeted with their faces when he began his sermon until he finished it.
[Machine] Abu Al-Juwairiyah said, "I saw Anas ibn Malik, the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , when the imam starts his sermon on Friday, he faces him with his face until the imam finishes his sermon."
[Machine] When the imam sits on the pulpit on Friday, the people all turn towards him with their faces.
[Machine] "That Ibn Umar used to complete his prayer on Friday before the Imam would come out. And when the Imam came out, he would not sit down until he faced him."
[Machine] Our conversation was interrupted and none of us spoke until the imam finished his sermon.
4.32 [Machine] The two units of Friday prayer
[Machine] Umar said: The prayer of the Eid al-Adha consists of two units, and the prayer of the Eid al-Fitr consists of two units, and the prayer of Friday consists of two units, and the prayer of a traveler consists of two units, complete and not shortened. Ath-Thawri narrated it from Zubaid, but he did not mention Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah in its chain except that he raised it at the end.
[Machine] The Friday prayer consists of two units, the Eid prayer consists of two units, and the traveler's prayer consists of two units, which are complete and not shortened, according to the saying of your Prophet ﷺ , narrated by Yahya al-Qattan from Sufyan from Zubaid from Ibn Abi Layla from Al-Thaqafi from Umar.
4.33 [Machine] Reading in the Friday Prayer
[Machine] Ubaidullah, when Abu Hurairah finished, I walked up to him and said, "I have read two Surahs that I heard Ali ibn Abi Talib recite in prayer." Abu Hurairah replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite them."
[Machine] Marwan appointed Abu Hurairah as the governor of Madinah and he went to Makkah. Abu Hurairah led us in Friday prayer and recited Surah Al-Jumu'ah in the first and last rak'ah. When the hypocrites were mentioned in the second rak'ah, Ubaidullah said, "I caught up with Abu Hurairah as he was leaving, and I said to him, 'Indeed, you recited two Surahs that Ali used to recite in Kufa." Abu Hurairah said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reciting them".
