4. Friday Ṣalāh (Jumuʿah) (8/9)
[Machine] Allah, may He be glorified, said: "When the call to prayer is proclaimed on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah." (Surah Al-Jumu'ah, verse 9) And He also said: "And He is the Witness and the Witnessed."
قَالَ اللهُ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُهُ: {إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللهِ} [الجمعة: 9] وَقَالَ: {وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ}
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever prays after Jumu'ah, let him pray four."
4.93 [Machine] The imam departs to his house and prostrates in it
[Machine] About Ibn Umar's voluntary prayer of the Prophet ﷺ, he said that he would not pray after Friday prayer until he had left the mosque, then he would pray two units of prayer in his house.
Nafi' said: Ibn Umar used to lengthen his prayer before the Friday prayer and would offer two rak'ahs after it in his house. He used to say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would do that. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1128)
4.94 [Machine] The one performing prayer bows in the mosque, then deviates from his position or separates them with words.
I offered the Friday prayer along with him in enclosure. When I uttered the salutation I stood up in my place and prayed. When he went in, he sent me a message saying: Never again do what you have done. When you pray the Friday prayer, you must not join another prayer to it till you have engaged in conversation or gone out, for the Prophet of Allah ﷺ gave the precise command not to join on prayer till you have engaged in conversation or gone out. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1129)
[Machine] He saw a man praying two extra units of prayer after the Friday prayer in his position, so he pushed him and said, "Doesn't the Friday prayer consist of four units?" He said, "Ibn Umar used to pray two units of prayer in his house and say that the Prophet ﷺ used to do it."
When Ibn 'Umar offered the Friday prayer in Mecca he would go forward and pray two rak'ahs, he would then go forward and pray four rak'ahs; but when he was in Medina, he offered the Friday prayer, then returned to his house and prayed two rak'ahs, not praying them in the mosque. Someone mentioned this to him and he replied that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1130)
[Machine] About his prayer, in which he prayed a little rather than a lot, then he performed two units of prayer, then he walked just to the left of that, then he performed four units of prayer. I said to him, "How often do you see him do that?" He said repeatedly, "When he finishes, he comes to perform the Tawaf."
4.95 [Machine] After Friday's sermon, nutrition and the speaker
[Machine] We used to wake up early for Friday and then rest afterwards.
[Machine] We had an old woman who would send us a dish, taking from the some of the leftovers, putting them in a pot, and cooking them with barley. So when we finished praying, we would go to her to greet her, and she would serve it to us. We used to look forward to Fridays because of that, and we would not move or eat until after Friday.
4.96 [Machine] What has been narrated about waiting for the afternoon after Jummah and its weakness?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, for you in every Friday is a Hajj and an Umrah. The Hajj of Friday is to perform Ishraq (sunrise prayer) after Jumu'ah prayer, and the Umrah is to wait for Asr prayer after Jumu'ah prayer, and likewise..."

‘Umar b. al-Khattab saw a silken suit sold at the gate of the mosque. He said: Messenger of Allah, would that you purchase this suit and wear it on Friday and on the occasion when a delegation (from the outside) comes to you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: One who has no share in the afterlife will put on this (suit). Afterwards suits of similar nature were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gave ‘Umar b. al-Khattab one of these suits. ‘Umar said: Messenger of Allah, you are giving it to me for use while you had told me such-and-such about the suit of ‘Utarid (I.e. sold by ‘Utarid). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I did not give it to you that you should wear it. Hence ‘Umar gave it to his brother who was a disbeliever at Mecca for wearing. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1076)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What is the harm if any of you has two garments, if he can provide them, for Friday (prayer) in addition to the two garments for his daily work? Amr reported from Ibn Habib from Musa ibn Sa'd from Ibn Habban from Ibn Salam who heard this (tradition) from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the pulpit. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been reported by Yusuf b. 'Abd Allah b. Salam from the Prophet ﷺ through a different chain of narrators. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1078)

[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Take a bath on the day of Friday and wash your heads even if you are not in a state of janabah, and apply perfume if available.' Ibn Abbas said: 'As for the bath, yes, but as for the perfume, I do not know.'"
[Machine] That he testified regarding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "It is obligatory to perform ghusl (ritual bath) on the day of Jumu'ah (Friday), and to use a toothstick, and to touch something with a fragrance, if available." 'Amr ibn Sulaim testified saying: "I testify that performing ghusl is obligatory. As for using the toothstick and fragrance, Allah knows best. But this is what I have heard."
The Prophet ﷺ said: Washing and the use of tooth-stick are necessary for every adult (person) on Friday; and everyone should apply perfume whatever one has. The narrator Bukair did not mention of 'Abd al-Rahman; and about perfume he said that even it might be of the kind used by women. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 344)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever takes a bath on the day of Friday, purifies himself as much as possible, applies some of his home's oil or perfume, then goes to the Friday prayer and prays what is required, and when the Imam comes out, he listens attentively and does not engage in any conversation, then his sins between that Friday and the next Friday will be forgiven." Reported by Abu Abdullah, and in another narration by Al-Qattan, from Abdullah bin Wadi'ah, from Salman Al-Khair, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said: "A man should not take a bath on Friday, then apply his own oil or perfume, and then come to the mosque, not separating between two people, and then listen when the Imam speaks, except that his sins between that Friday and the next will be forgiven."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When it is Friday, a man should perform ghusl (ritual bath) and wash his head. Then he should apply the best of his perfumes and wear his best clothes. After that, he should go to the prayer and not separate between two people. Then he should listen to the Imam. For him, forgiveness will be granted from one Friday to the next, and an additional three days. This was narrated from another perspective by Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa'id."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever performs ghusl on the day of Jumu'ah, purifies himself as much as he can, applies perfume if he has it, wears his best clothes, then goes to the mosque and does not separate his shoulders from the people, then prays as much as Allah wills, then remains silent until the Imam finishes the prayer, it will be an expiation for what is between that Friday and the previous one." Abu Hurairah said, "Three days as a surplus. Indeed, Allah has made good deeds equivalent to ten times their reward."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said about a Friday from the Fridays: "O Muslims, this is a day that Allah has made an 'Eid (celebration) for the Muslims, so perform ghusl (ritual bath) and whoever has perfume should not harm him if he touches it, and use siwak (tooth stick). This is the correct hadith, traceable in a chain of narration, and it is not acceptable to interrupt it."

[Machine] I had two paternal uncles who used to trim their mustache and nails every Friday. As for the hadith narrated from Ibn Abbas, it is raised that a believer on Friday is like a pilgrim. He does not trim his nails or hair until the prayer is done. And about Ibn Umar, it is raised that a Muslim on Friday is considered in a state of ihram, so once he prays, he is allowed to trim. However, these two narrations were reported with weak chains of narrators, and they cannot be relied upon as evidence. And with Allah is the Tawfeeq (success).

[Machine] When he used to perform Istijmar (a method of cleaning oneself after using the bathroom) for Jumu'ah prayer, he would use a non-aromatic stick and apply camphor on it saying, "This is the incense of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." It has also been narrated from Ibn Umar that he was invited to Sa'id ibn Zaid while he was performing Istijmar for Jumu'ah prayer.
4.101 [Machine] Who was offered something good
[Machine] On the authority of Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ , who said: "Whoever is offered perfume should not reject it, for indeed it is light to carry and has a pleasant scent."
4.102 [Machine] The best clothes you have are white.
The Prophet ﷺ said: Wear your white garments, for they are among your best garments, and shroud your dead in them. Among the best types of collyrium you use is antimony (ithmid): it clears the vision and makes the hair sprout. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3878)
4.103 [Machine] What is recommended for the clothes of al-Hibarah and what should be dyed in its thread should not be dyed once it is woven.
[Machine] I asked Anas which clothing was the most beloved and admired by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, "The striped garment."
[Machine] He said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing two yellowish garments. He said: 'O Abdullah bin Amr, Verily, these are the clothes of the disbelievers, so do not wear them.'"
On his father's authority, said that his grandfather said: We came down with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from a turning of a valley. He turned his attention to me and I was wearing a garment dyed with a reddish yellow dye. He asked: What is this garment over you? I recognised what he disliked. I then came to my family who were burning their oven. I threw it (the garment) in it and came to him the next day. He asked: Abdullah, what have you done with the garment? I informed him about it. He said: Why did you not give it to one of your family to wear, for there is no harm in it for women. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4066)
4.104 [Machine] What is disliked for women from fragrances when going out and what they are known for
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "There is no woman who goes out to the mosque and her scent of perfume is dispersed, except that Allah accepts her prayer until she returns to her home and takes a bath."
The Prophet ﷺ said: I do not ride on purple, or wear a garment dyed with saffron, or wear shirt hemmed with silk. Pointing to the collar of his shirt al-Hasan (al-Basri) said: The perfume used by men should have an odour but no colour, and the perfume used by women should have a colour but no odour. Sa'id said: I think he said: They interpreted his tradition about perfume used by women as applying when she comes out. But when she is with her husband, she may use any perfume she wishes. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4048)
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Any woman who puts on perfume then passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance then she is an adulteress.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5126)

[Machine] I saw the Prophet ﷺ on the pulpit, wearing a black turban, and he had loosened one end of it between his shoulders.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered on the day of conquest, wearing a black turban.
[Machine] I heard Milhan ibn Thawban saying, "Amr ibn Yasser was with us in Kufa for a year. He used to give us sermons every Friday while wearing a black turban."
[Machine] I witnessed the house on the day Uthman was killed. I then passed by the mosque and saw a man calling out in the shade of the women with a black turban on his head, holding a sword. It was Ali. He asked, "What has happened to the man?" I said, "He was killed." He said, "Woe to you, the rest of time!"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear his red cloak on the day of Eid and Friday in the year 5985. Abu Saad Al-Zahid narrated to us that Abu Al-Walid Hassan ibn Muhammad Al-Qurashi narrated to us that Muhammad ibn Al-Mughira narrated to us that Al-Hassan ibn Al-Sabah narrated to us that Hafs ibn Ghiath mentioned it in his chain of narration except that he said, "The Prophet ﷺ had a cloak that he would wear on the two Eids and on Fridays."
4.107 [Machine] Tightening of Friday Prayers Leaving, except for what was mentioned in the beginning of this book.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever leaves Friday prayer three times without a valid excuse, Allah will seal his heart in hardness."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever misses three consecutive Friday prayers without a valid excuse, Allah ﷻ will seal his heart." Sulaiman bin Bilal reported this from Asid.
[Machine] Narrated by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "A person may be granted spoils of war on the outskirts of a village where he resides and witnesses the prayer. If he is unable to reach the mosque, he says: 'If only I could ascend to a place higher than this which is more preferable for me.' So he ascends to that place until the prayer is only offered there once a week. When he is unable to climb up to that place, and he eats what is around him, he says: 'If only I could ascend to a place higher than this which is more preferable for me.' So he ascends to that place until he no longer attends the Friday prayer and does not even know the day of Friday. This continues until Allah seals his heart. And likewise…"
4.108 [Machine] What is mentioned in the expiation of those who abandon Friday prayer without excuse.
The Prophet ﷺ said: If anyone omits the Friday prayer without excuse, he must give a dinar in alms, or if he does not have as much, then half a dinar. Abu Dawud said: Khalid b. Qais reported this tradition in this manner, but he disagreed in respect of chain (of transmitters) and agreed in respect of the text. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1053)
[Machine] Narrated by Samurah ibn Jundub al-Fazari, who was a companion of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ : "Whoever misses the Friday prayer without an excuse should give charity of a dirham, half a dirham, a bushel, or a measure of wheat." Sa'id (the narrator) said, "I asked Qatadah, 'Should he give it to the Prophet, ﷺ ?' He hesitated in answering. Sa'id said, 'Some of our companions have mentioned that Qatadah used to give it to the Prophet, ﷺ .' It was narrated by Ayyub ibn Muskin, Abu al-'Ala, from Qatadah, and he sent it to him."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever misses Friday prayer without a valid excuse should give in charity a dirham or half a dirham, or a measure of wheat or half a measure of wheat." Abu Abdullah Al-Haafiz informed us that Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Baalawayh informed him that Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal told him, "I heard my father being asked about the hadith of Hammam about Qatadah and the difference between Abu Al-Alaa and Hammam in it, and he said, 'Hammam is more reliable in our view than Ayoub.'" Imam Ahmad narrated it and Khalid ibn Qays narrated it from Qatadah, and it agreed with Hammam in the text of the hadith but differed from him in its chain of narration.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Whoever intentionally neglects attending Friday prayer, he should give in charity one dinar. And if he cannot find a dinar, then half a dinar." He said, "I do not believe that this narration is authentic since there is consensus on the contrary. As for the text, it testifies to the authenticity of the narration of Hammam. And Muhammad ibn Ismail Al-Bukhari did not see him as a trustworthy narrator. Therefore, Qudamah ibn Wara'ah's hearing from Sumarah is not proven." Abu Sa'id Al-Malini informed us that Abu Ahmad ibn 'Adi said, "I heard Ibn Hammad saying, 'Al-Bukhari said that Qudamah ibn Wara'ah's hearing from Sumarah is not valid.'" Abu Ahmad said, "This is what Al-Bukhari mentioned from the hadith of Qudamah ibn Wara'ah, but it is actually the hadith of Qatadah from Qudamah from Sumarah from the Prophet, ﷺ , regarding the negligence of attending Friday prayer."
4.109 [Machine] What is encouraged on the night and day of Friday, such as abundant prayers upon the Messenger of Allah, recitation of Surah Al-Kahf, and others.
The Prophet ﷺ said: Among the most excellent of your days is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the last trumpet will be blown, and on it the shout will be made, so invoke more blessings on me that day, for your blessings will be submitted to me. The people asked: Messenger of Allah, how can it be that our blessings will be submitted to you while your body is decayed? He replied: Allah, the Exalted, has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of Prophets. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1047)
