8. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah Rites (13/14)
“The Prophet ﷺ set out before daybreak, on the night of departure, from Batha’.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3068)
[Machine] And she said, "Verily, this was revealed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ because he found this to be more lenient for his departure." And the wording is from Muhammad.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ alighted at al-Muhassab so that it might be easier for him to proceed (to Medina). It is not a sunnah (i.e. a rite of Hajj). Anyone who desires may alight there, and anyone who does not want may not alight. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2008)
[Machine] Ibn Abbas said, "It was only a shelter that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in."
Halt at Muhassab is not something (significant from the point of view of the Shari'ah). It is a place of halt where Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) halted. (Using translation from Muslim 1312)
[Machine] We traveled with the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , from Medina to Mecca. He prayed two units of prayer with us. When we returned, I asked him, "Did he stay?" He said, "Yes, he stayed for ten days in Mecca."
[Machine] I asked Urwah ibn Zubayr how long the Prophet ﷺ stayed in Mecca. He said ten days. I said, Ibn Abbas claims that he stayed thirteen days. He said, Ibn Abbas is lying. He said, "So may he be cursed."
8.279 [Machine] The residence of the migrant in Makkah after completing his rituals
I heard ʿUmar bin ʿAbdul-Aziz asking As-Sa'ib, the nephew of An-Nimr. "What have you heard about residing in Mecca?" The other said, "I heard Al-Ala bin Al-Hadrami saying, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: An Emigrant is allowed to stay in Mecca for three days after departing from Mina (i.e. after performing all the ceremonies of Hajj)" (Using translation from Bukhārī 3933)
It is only for three nights that a Muhajir should stay at Mecca after the completion of the rituals of Hajj. (Using translation from Muslim 1352c)
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The Muhajir may stay for three days after completing his rituals.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1454)
8.280 [Machine] The sacred months.
The Prophet ﷺ gave a sermon during his hajj and said: Time has completed a cycle and assumed the form of the day when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year contains twelve months of which four are sacred, three of them consecutive, viz. Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram and also Rajab of Mudar which comes between Jumadah and Sha'ban. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1947)
8.281 [Machine] Which holy month is the best?
[Machine] I asked Abu Dharr, "Which slaves are the purest?' He replied,' The purest slaves are those who are the most valuable.' I asked, 'Which night is the best?' He replied, 'The best night is the middle of the month.' I asked, 'Which month is the best?' He replied, 'The best month is the one that you call Al-Muharram, which is the month of Allah.'
8.282 [Machine] How old was the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when he performed Umrah?
[Machine] How many times did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform Umrah (minor pilgrimage)? He said, "Four times."
Ibn 'Umar was asked: How many times did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform 'Umrah ? He said: Twice. 'Aishah said: Ibn 'Umar knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed three 'Umrahs in addition to the one he combined with the Farewell Pilgrimage. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1992)
8.283 [Machine] Al-Umrah
[Machine] Ibn Abi Awfa said, "I performed Umrah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He kissed the Black Stone, performed Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, and we would screen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for fear that some people of Makkah might throw something at him."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Umrah, circled around the Kaaba, then went between Safa and Marwa and we would shield him from the people of Mecca so that none of them would harm him or cause any harm to befall him."
8.284 [Machine] Umrah in Rajab
[Machine] Urwah reported that Aisha said: "Indeed, Ibn Umar used to say: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Umrah in the month of Rajab.'"
I and Ibn 'Umar were reclining against the (wall) of the apartment of A'isha and we were listening to the sound produced by the brushing of her teeth. I said Abu Abd al-Rahman (the kunya of 'Abdullah b. Umar), did Allah's Apostle ﷺ perform 'Umra in the month of Rijab? He said: Yes. I said to 'A'isha: Mother, are you listening to what Abu Abd al-Rabman is saying? She said: What is he Saying? I said: He is saying that Allah's Apostle ﷺ performed 'Umra during the month of Rajab, whereupon she said: May Allah grant pardon to Abu Abd al-Rahman I By my life he (the Holy Prophet) did not perform 'Umra during the month of Rajab. And never was there an Umra performed by him (the Holy Prophet) in which he ('Abdullah b. 'Umar) did not join him. Ibn 'Umar heard this and said nothing to affirm It or to deny it, but kept quiet. (Using translation from Muslim 1254)
8.285 [Machine] The blessings of Umrah in Ramadan.
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ asked a woman from the Ansar, "What prevented you from performing Hajj with us?" She replied, "O Messenger of Allah, we had two camels, and Abu Fulan performed Hajj with his wife and son on one camel, leaving us one camel to use for transport. So the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, 'If it is Ramadan, then perform Umrah, for performing Umrah in Ramadan equals performing Hajj.'"
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said to a man from the Ansar and his wife, "Perform 'Umrah in Ramadan, for verily performing 'Umrah in it is equivalent to Hajj."
“ ‘Umrah during Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj (i.e. in reward).” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2991)
[Machine] "To perform Hajj while her camel was lame, so she asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said: 'Perform Umrah in Ramadan, for an Umrah during it is equal to a Hajj.'"
[Machine] I wanted to perform Hajj, but my camel fell ill, so I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, "Perform Umrah in the month of Ramadan, for an Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to a Hajj."
[Machine] "He (the person speaking) came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Indeed, my mother Maqil has been prevented from performing Hajj with you, so what should she do?' He (the Messenger) said, 'Perform Umrah during Ramadan.' He (the person speaking) said, 'I have a camel that I have designated for the sake of Allah; can I give it to her so she can ride it?' He (the Messenger) said, 'Yes.'"
8.286 [Machine] Umrah in the months of Hajj
[Machine] "Umrah during the months of Hajj is a complete act that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed and Allah revealed it in His book."
8.287 [Machine] Umrah of the Enrichment
The Prophet ﷺ ordered me to let ʿAisha sit behind me (on the animal) and to let her perform ʿUmra from at-Tanʿim. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2985)
[Machine] To the Prophet ﷺ, I feel in my heart that I haven't performed 'Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage). He said, "Go, O Abdullah ar-Rahman, and perform 'Umrah in a manner that is full of blessings."
[Machine] She said, "O Messenger of Allah, your wives go out for 'Umrah and Hajj, and I go out only for Hajj." So he said to her brother 'Abdul-Rahman, "Prepare her for 'Umrah with Tan`im."
[Machine] She said, "O Messenger of Allah, should people slaughter two sacrifices or one?" He said, "Wait until you have purified yourself, then go to the place of sacrifice and have your family do the same. Then bring us a mountain such and such." The wording is by Al-Hassan. Ahmad reported in his hadith from Isma'il that Ibn 'Awn said, "I do not remember this hadith from so and so's hadith."
8.288 [Machine] Umrah from Jirrana
[Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ coming out of Al-Jirrana at night, and I looked at his back and it seemed like it was made of silver plates. Then he wore a garment in the morning.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Ji'irranah and the people of Ji'irranah learned of his entrance, so they gathered around him and increased in number until it seemed to me as if I could see the whiteness of his armpits and side, as if his whiteness were silver rods. He raised his hands and said, "O people, I have come to you, so move away from me." They moved away from him until he came to the mosque, where he performed the desired number of Rak'ahs and then proceeded to put on the ihram. He then mounted his ride and faced the direction of Sarif until he reached the road to Makkah, and he arrived in Makkah as a conqueror.
8.289 [Machine] How much does Umrah cost?
"The Messenger of Allah left Al-Ji'irranah during the night for Umrah, then he entered Makkah during he night and performed his Umrah. Then he left there during the night, then he was in Al-Ji'irranah by the morning, as if he had spent the night. When the sun passed the zenith in the morning he left from the midst of Sarif until he came on a road from amidst Sarif. It is because of this that his Umrah was concealed from the people." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 935)
8.290 [Machine] Working in Umrah
[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ having assumed the state of ihram for umrah while wearing a cloak and he was perfumed. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to remove his cloak and ritually cleanse himself two or three times, and he said, "Do what you did not do during your pilgrimage in your umrah."
[Machine] An Arab came to the Prophet ﷺ, wearing a garment with a saffron-colored strip on it. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have performed Ihram as you see, but people are mocking me. Could you grant me permission to take it off for a while?" The Prophet ﷺ allowed him and then called him and said, "Take off this garment, wash off the saffron and perform Umrah as you would perform Hajj." And Ya'la bin Umayyah reported from the Prophet ﷺ with a similar narration.
8.291 [Machine] When does the pilgrim complete the Tawaf?
On reaching the sanctuary of Mecca, Ibn ʿUmar used to stop, reciting Talbiya and then he would pass the night at Dhi-Tuwa and then offer the Fajr prayer and take a bath. He used to say that the Prophet ﷺ used to do the same. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1573)

We set out assuming the Ihram for Hajj in the months of Hajj towards the sacred precincts of Hajj. We dismounted at Sarif and the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions, "Whoever has not got the Hadi with him and likes to make it as ʿUmra, he should do it, but he who has got the Hadi with him should not do it." The Prophet ﷺ and some of his wealthy companions had the Hadi with them, so they did not finish Ihram after performing the ʿUmra. The Prophet ﷺ came to me while I was weeping. He asked me the reason for it. I replied, "I have heard of what you have said to your companions and I cannot do the ʿUmra." He asked me, "What is the matter with you?" I replied, "I am not praying." He said, "There is no harm in it as you are one of the daughters of Adam and the same is written for you as for others. So, you should perform Hajj and I hope that Allah will enable you to perform the ʿUmra as well." So, I carried on till we departed from Mina and halted at Al-Mahassab. The Prophet ﷺ called ʿAbdur- Rahman and said, "Go out of the sanctuary with your sister and let her assume Ihram for ʿUmra, and after both of you have finished the Tawaf I will be waiting for you at this place." We came back at midnight and the Prophet ﷺ asked us, "Have you finished?" I replied in the affirmative. He announced the departure and the people set out for the journey and some of them had performed the Tawaf of the Kaʿba before the morning prayer, and after that the Prophet ﷺ set out for Medina.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to be received by children of his household when he returned from a journey, and there was a time when he came back from a journey and carried me in his arms. One of the sons of Fatimah also joined him and rode on the animal with him, so the three of us entered the city together on the mount.
8.298 [Machine] What does he say when he arrives in the city?
We were in the company of the Prophet ﷺ while returning from 'Usfan, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ was riding his she-camel keeping Safiya bint Huyay riding behind him. His she-camel slipped and both of them fell down. Abu Talha jumped from his camel and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! May Allah sacrifice me for you." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Take care of the lady." So, Abu Talha covered his face with a garment and went to Safiya and covered her with it, and then he set right the condition of their shecamel so that both of them rode, and we were encircling Messenger of Allah ﷺ like a cover. When we approached Medina, the Prophet ﷺ said, "We are returning with repentance and worshipping and praising our Lord." He kept on saying this till he entered Medina. (Using translation from Bukhārī 3085)

Whenever the Prophet ﷺ returned from a journey and observed the walls of Medina, he would make his Mount go fast, and if he was on an animal (i.e. a horse), he would make it gallop because of his love for Medina. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1886)

“O Messenger of Allah, will you stay in your house in Makkah?” He said: “Has ‘Aqeel left us any houses?” 'Aqeel had inherited Abu Talib along with Talib. Neither Ja'far nor 'Ali inherited anything because they had been Muslims, and 'Aqeel and Talib had been disbelievers. So on account of that, Omar would say the believer does not inherit from the disbeliever. And Usamah said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said "The Muslim does not inherit from the disbeliever nor the disbeliever from the Muslim." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2730)
