Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you sneezes, he should say, 'Praise be to Allah,' and his brother or companion should say to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you.' Then he should say, 'May Allah guide you and put your affairs in order.'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَإِذَا قَالَ فَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ فَإِذَا قَالَ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ فَلْيَقُلْ يَهْدِيكَ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكَ قال أبو عبد الله أثبت ما يروى في هذا الباب هذا الحديث الذي يروى عن ابي صالح السمان

Abu Salih reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you sneezes, he should say, 'Praise be to Allah.' When he says, 'Praise be to Allah, ' his brother or companion should say to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you.' Then let the person who sneezed say, 'May Allah guide you and put your affairs in order.'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَإِذَا قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

'Abdullah said, "When one of you sneezes, he should say, 'Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.' Let anyone responding to him say 'May Allah have mercy on you.' Then the person who sneezed should say'May Allah forgive me and you.'"

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَلْيَقُلْ مَنْ يَرُدُّ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لِي وَلَكُمْ

The Prophet ﷺ said, " If anyone of you sneezes, he should say 'Al-Hamduli l-lah' (Praise be to Allah), and his (Muslim) brother or companion should say to him, 'Yar-hamuka-l-lah' (May Allah bestow his Mercy on you). When the latter says 'Yar-hamuka-llah", the former should say, 'Yahdikumul-lah wa Yuslih balakum' (May Allah give you guidance and improve your condition).

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ فَإِذَا قَالَ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ فَلْيَقُلْ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

Hilal ibn Yasar said: We were with Salim ibn Ubayd when a man from among the people sneezed and said: Peace be upon you. Salim said: And upon you and your mother. Later he said: Perhaps you found something (annoying) in what I said to you. He said: I wished you would not mention my mother with good or evil. He said: I have just said to you what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. We were in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man from among the people sneezed, saying: Peace be upon you! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: And upon you and your mother. He then said: When one of you sneezes, he should praise Allah. He further mentioned some attributes (of Allah), saying: The one who is with him should say to him: Allah have mercy on you, and he should reply to them: Allah forgive us and you.

سَالِمٌ وَعَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ بَعْدُ لَعَلَّكَ وَجَدْتَ مِمَّا قُلْتُ لَكَ قَالَ لَوَدِدْتُ أَنَّكَ لَمْ تَذْكُرْ أُمِّي بِخَيْرٍ وَلاَ بِشَرٍّ قَالَ إِنَّمَا قُلْتُ لَكَ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّا بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذْ عَطَسَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ قَالَ فَذَكَرَ بَعْضَ الْمَحَامِدِ وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَلْيَرُدَّ يَعْنِي عَلَيْهِمْ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ

When one of you sneezes, he should say: "Praise be to Allah in every circumstance," and his brother or his companion should say: "May Allah have mercy on you!" And he should then reply: "May Allah guide you and set right your affairs."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيَقُلْ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَيَقُولُ هُوَ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

that he was with some people on a journey, and a man among the people sneezed and he said: "As-Salamu Alaikum (peace be upon you)." So he (Salim) said: "'Alaika Wa 'Ala Ummik (upon you and upon your mother)." It seemed as if that bothered the man, so he said: "Indeed I have not said except what the Prophet ﷺ said; a man sneezed in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'As-Salamu 'Alaikum (peace be upon you)' so the Prophet ﷺ said: ''Alaika Wa 'Ala Ummik (upon you and upon your mother). When one of you sneezes let him say: "Al-Hamdulillahi Rabbil-'Alamin (All praise is due to the Lord of all that exists)" and let the one responding to him say: Yarhamukallah (May Allah have mercy upon you)" and let him reply: Yaghfirullah Li Walakum (May Allah forgive me and you both)."

أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَعَ الْقَوْمِ فِي سَفَرٍ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ فَكَأَنَّ الرَّجُلَ وَجِدَ فِي نَفْسِهِ فَقَالَ أَمَا إِنِّي لَمْ أَقُلْ إِلاَّ مَا قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَطَسَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ مَنْ يَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَلْيَقُلْ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When one of you sneezes let him say: 'Al-Hamdulillahi 'Ala Kulli Hal (All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance).' And let the one replying to him say: "Yarhamukallah (May Allah have mercy upon you).' And let him say to him: 'Yahdikumullah Wa Yuslihu Balakum (May Allah guide you and rectify your affairs).'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيَقُلِ الَّذِي يَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

"If anyone of you sneezes, let him say: Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah). Those around him should respond by saying: Yarhamkullah (may Allah have mercy on you). And he should respond by saying: "Yahdikum Allah wa yuslaha balakum (may Allah Guide you and set right your state)."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلْيَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ مَنْ حَوْلَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَلْيَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِمْ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

ʿIf one of you sneezes, let him say: Praise be to Allah in all situations. Let others say to him; May Allah have mercy on you. And let him say May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.” I said to him: Is it from Abu Ayyoob? He said: ʿAli ؓ . (Using translation from Aḥmad 995)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْعَاطِسُ يَقُولُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَيَقُولُ الَّذِي يُشَمِّتُهُ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If one of you sneezes, let him say, Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds, and let those who are around him say: May Allah have mercy on you, and let him say, May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَلْيَقُلْ مَنْ حَوْلَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿIf one of you sneezes, let him say, Praise be to Allah in all situations, and let those who are around him say: May Allah have mercy on you, and let him reply, May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.ʿ

ʿIf one of you sneezes, let him say: Praise be to Allah in all situations. Let others say to him; May Allah have mercy on you. And let him say May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.” I said to him: Is it from Abu Ayyoob? He said: ʿAli ؓ .

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيُقَلْ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكُمِ اللهُ وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , when he would sneeze, would praise Allah, and it would be said to him: "May Allah have mercy on you". He would reply: "May Allah guide you and rectify your affairs."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا عَطَسَ حَمِدَ اللهَ فَيُقَالُ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ فَيَقُولُ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you sneezes, let them say, 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah). And when they say, 'Alhamdulillah,' let their brother say to them, 'Yarhamukallah' (May Allah have mercy on you). And when it is said to them, 'Yarhamukallah,' let them say, 'Yahdikumullah wa yuslih balakum' (May Allah guide you and rectify your affairs)."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَإِذَا قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ قَالَ لَهُ أَخُوهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ فَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ فَلْيَقُلْ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

The Jews used to try to sneezes in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ hoping that he would say to them: "Allah have mercy on you!" but he would say: May Allah guide you and grant you well-being! (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5038)

كَانَتْ يَهُودُ يَأْتُونَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَيَتَعَاطَسُونَ عِنْدَهُ؛ رَجَاءَ أَنْ يَقُولَ لَهُمْ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللهُ فَكَانَ يَقُولُ لَهُمْ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

ʿIf one of you sneezes, let him say: Praise be to Allah in all situations. Let others say to him; May Allah have mercy on you. And let him say May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.” I said to him: Is it from Abu Ayyoob? He said: ʿAli ؓ . (Using translation from Aḥmad 995)

ʿIf one of you sneezes, let him say: Praise be to Allah in all situations. Let others say to him; May Allah have mercy on you. And let him say May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.” I said to him: Is it from Abu Ayyoob? He said: ʿAli ؓ . (Using translation from Aḥmad 995)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْفَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيَقُلِ الَّذِي يُشَمِّتُهُ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللهُ وَلْيَقُلِ الَّذِي يَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

[AI] "To say it, I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and a man sneezed, so he said, 'Peace be upon you,' and the man replied, 'And upon you and your mother,' then he said, 'When any of you sneezes, let him say Alhamdulillah ('Praise be to Allah') in every situation, or let him say Alhamdulillah Rabbil 'Alamin ('Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds'), and let him say to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you,' or, 'May Allah have mercy on you,' as Shakk Yahya said, and let him say, 'May Allah forgive me and you.'"

أَنْ أَقُولَهَا كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ أَوِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَلْيُقَلْ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللهُ أَوْ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ شَكَّ يَحْيَى وَلْيَقُلْ يَغْفِرُ اللهُ لِي وَلَكُمْ

Malik related to me from Nafi that when Abdullah ibn Umar sneezed and someone said to him, "May Allah have mercy on you," (Yarhamuka'llah), he said, "May Allah have mercy on us and you, and forgive us and you." (Yarhamuna'llah wa yaghfirlana wa lakum).

أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ إِذَا عَطَسَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ قَالَ يَرْحَمُنَا اللَّهُ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَيَغْفِرُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ

[AI] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "Indeed, Allah the Exalted loves sneezing, so when one of you sneezes, it is binding upon every person who hears him to say, 'May Allah have mercy on you.'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى يُحِبُّ الْعُطَاسَ فَإِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَحَقَّ عَلَى كُلِّ مَنْ سَمِعَهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said: "If anyone of you sneezes, let him say "Alhamdulillah" (Praise be to Allah) in every situation, and let others say to him "Yarhamuk Allah" (May Allah have mercy on you), and let him say "Yahdikum Allah" (May Allah guide you) and "Yuslihu balaakum" (May Allah rectify your affairs). As for the chosen expression by the jurists of the people of Kufa in response to this greeting by the sneezer."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيَقُولُوا لَهُ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللَّهُ وَلْيَقُلْ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ «فَأَمَّا اللَّفْظَةُ الَّتِي اخْتَارَهَا فُقَهَاءُ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ لِلْعَاطِسِ فِي الْجَوَابِ فِي هَذِهِ التَّحِيَّةِ»

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If one of you sneezes, let him say, Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds, and let those who are around him say: May Allah have mercy on you, and let him say, May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 972)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَلْيُقَلْ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَلْيَقُلْ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ

[AI] "If any of you sneezes, let them say Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah), and let them be told Yarhamukumullah (may Allah have mercy on you). And when they are told Yarhamukumullah, let them say Yaghfirullah (may Allah forgive us and you). This is a preserved statement from the words of Abdullah when there is no one to authenticate his narration."

إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلْيُقَلْ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللَّهُ فَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللَّهُ فَلْيَقُلْ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ «هَذَا الْمَحْفُوظُ مِنْ كَلَامِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِذَا لَمْ يُسْنِدْهُ مَنْ يعْتَمِدُ رِوَايَتَهُ»

[AI] "Peace be upon you and upon your mother." Then he asked him, so he said, "Perhaps you have found something about that." He said, "I do not like my mother to be mentioned." He said, "Salem and I were with the Prophet ﷺ when a man sneezed, so he said, 'Peace be upon you,' and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'Peace be upon you and upon your mother.' Then he said, 'When one of you sneezes, let him say, 'Alhamdulillah, Rabbil 'Alamin' (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds), or 'Alhamdulillah 'Ala Kulli Hal' (Praise be to Allah in every circumstance), and let him say to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you,' and let him say, 'May Allah forgive me and you.' And Zaid ibn Qudama Sufyan al-Thawri followed up with his narration from Mansour."

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ لَعَلَّكَ وَجَدْتَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَذْكُرَ أُمِّي فَقَالَ سَالِمٌ كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ» ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ أَوِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيُقَلْ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَلْيَقُلْ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لِي وَلَكُمْ وَقَدْ تَابَعَ زَائِدَةُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيَّ عَلَى رِوَايَتِهِ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ

[AI] Salem greeted with "Peace be upon you, and upon your mother." Then the man found himself and Salem said to him, "Are you alright?" He replied, "I would prefer not to mention my mother with good or bad." Salem then said, "We were with the Messenger of Allah during a journey, and a man sneezed. The Messenger of Allah said, 'May peace be upon you.' The man replied, 'And upon you and your mother.' The Messenger of Allah said, 'When one of you sneezes, let him say praise be to Allah in every situation, or he may say praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and let him say to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you,' and he should say, 'May Allah forgive you.'"

فقَالَ سَالِمٌ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ فَوَجَدَ الرَّجُلُ فِي نَفْسِهِ فقَالَ لَهُ سَالِمٌ كَأَنَّكَ وَجَدْتَ فِي نَفْسِكَ؟ فقَالَ مَا كُنْتُ أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَذْكُرَ أُمِّي بِخَيْرٍ وَلَا بِشَرٍّ فقَالَ سَالِمٌ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ أَوْ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ»

عَن النَّبِيّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الحمد لله وليقل له أخوه أو صاحبه يرحمكم الله وليقل هو يهديكم الله ويصلح بالكم وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لاَ نعلمُهُ يُرْوَى عَن أَبِي هُرَيرة إلاَّ من هذا الوجه ولاَ نَعلم يُرْوَى عَنِ النَّبِيّ ﷺ في يهديكم الله ويصلح بالكم أصح من هذا الحديث

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If one of you sneezes, let him say, Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds, and let those who are around him say: May Allah have mercy on you, and let him say, May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 972)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا عَطَسَ الرَّجُلُ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيَقُلْ مَنْ حَوْلَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿIf one of you sneezes, let him say, Praise be to Allah in all situations, and let those who are around him say: May Allah have mercy on you, and let him reply, May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 973)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيَقُلِ الَّذِي يَسْمَعُهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ وَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِ يَهْدِيكَ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكَ

[AI] We were with the Prophet ﷺ and a man sneezed, so he said, "Peace be upon you." Abu Hurairah said, "May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you." The Prophet ﷺ said, "And upon your mother." Then he said, "When one of you sneezes, let him say, 'Alhamdulillah, Rabbil 'Alamin (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds) ' abundantly or 'Alhamdulillah 'ala kulli hal (Praise be to Allah in every circumstance).' Let whoever is with him say, 'Yarhamuk Allah (May Allah have mercy on you),' and let him reply, 'Yaghfirullah (May Allah forgive us) and you.'"

كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ» ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ كَثِيرًا أَوِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيَقُلْ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ وَلْيَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِمْ يَغْفِرُ اللهُ لِي وَلَكُمْ

[AI] I wish you did not mention my mother's name, neither in a good nor a bad way in front of people. He said to him, “I only said to you what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said.” A man sneezed and said, “Peace be upon you.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “And upon you and your mother.” The Prophet ﷺ also said, “When one of you sneezes, let him say: Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) in every state, and let his brother or companion say to him: Yarhamuk Allah (May Allah have mercy on you), and let him say: Yaghfirullahu lana walakum (May Allah forgive us and you).”

وَدِدْتُ أَنَّكَ لَمْ تَذْكُرْ أُمِّي بِخَيْرٍ وَلَا بِشَرٍّ عِنْدَ النَّاسِ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنَّمَا قُلْتُ لَكَ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ» وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ وَيَقُولُ يَغْفِرُ اللهُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ

[AI] I wish you did not mention anything good or bad about my mother in front of people. He said to him, "I only said to you what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said." A man sneezed and said, "Peace be upon you," and the Prophet ﷺ replied, "And upon you and your mother." The Prophet ﷺ also said, "When one of you sneezes, let him say, 'Alhamdulillah' (praise be to Allah) in every situation, and let his brother or companion say to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you,' and let him say, 'May Allah forgive us and you.'"

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us that when one of you sneezes, they should say, "Alhamdulillah, Lord of the worlds." And when they say that, they should also say, "May Allah have mercy on you." And when they say that, they should also say, "May Allah forgive me and you."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُعَلِّمُنَا إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ فَإِذَا قَالَ ذَلِكَ فَلْيَقُلْ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ فَإِذَا قَالَ فَلْيَقُلْ يَغْفِرُ اللهُ لِي وَلَكُمْ

[AI] We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ and he sneezed, so he praised Allah. They said, "May Allah have mercy on you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah guide you and rectify your affairs."

كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَعَطَسَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ فَقَالُوا يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ»

[AI] The translation of the passage is as follows: "Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sneeze, he would praise Allah and it would be said to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you,' to which he would respond, 'May Allah guide you and rectify your affairs.'"

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا عَطَسَ حَمِدَ اللهَ فَيُقَالُ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ فَيَقُولُ «يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ»

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿIf one of you sneezes, let him say, Praise be to Allah in all situations, and let those who are around him say: May Allah have mercy on you, and let him reply, May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 973)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَيُرَدُّ عَلَيْهِ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللهُ وَيُرَدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ يَغْفِرُ اللهُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ

[AI] The Prophet, ﷺ , said, "When a person sneezes, he should say 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah) for every condition. The one who hears him sneeze should say, 'Yarhamuk Allah' (May Allah have mercy on you).' The one who sneezed should then say, 'Yahdikum Allah' (May Allah guide you) and 'Yuslih balakum' (May Allah rectify your affairs)." Abu Abdullah Rahman Mohammed ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Layla said, "He is not strong in narration, and he has poor memory, and he is one of the scholars."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْعَاطِسُ يَقُولُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَيَقُولُ الَّذِي يُشَمِّتُهُ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللهُ وَيَقُولُ لَهُ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ فِي الْحَدِيثِ سَيِّءُ الْحِفْظِ وَهُوَ أَحَدُ الْفُقَهَاءِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If one of you sneezes, let him say, Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds, and let those who are around him say: May Allah have mercy on you, and let him say, May Allah guide you and rectify your condition.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 972)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ وَلْيَقُلْ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

"إذا عَطَسَ أحدُكُمْ فليَقُلْ: الحمدُ لله ربِّ العالمين، والحمد لله عَلَى كلِّ حال، فإِذا قال ذلكَ فليقُلْ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ الله، فإِذا قال فْليقُلْ هُوَ: يَغْفرُ الله لنَا وَلكُمْ" .

"إذا عَطَسَ أحدُكُمْ فليقُلْ: الحمدُ لله عَلَى كُلِّ حالٍ، ولْيَقُلْ مَنْ حَوْلَه: يَرْحُمكَ الله، ولْيقُلْ هُوَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَه: يهديكُمْ الله ويصلِحُ بالكُمْ".

"إذا عَطَسَ أحدُكُمْ فْليَقلْ: الحْمُد لله على كُل حالٍ، فإِذا قال فْليَقل له أخُوه أوْ صاحِبُه: يرْحَمُكَ الله، فإِذا قال لهُ: يرحَمُكَ الله، فْليقُل هو: يَهْديكُمْ الله وَيُصْلِحُ بالكُمْ".

حم، خ، د وابن السنى، هب وابن جرير عن أبي هريرة.

قال خ: وهو أثبت ما يرُوى في هذا الباب.

"عن أَبى العلاء عن عبد اللَّه بن الشخير قال: عَطَسَ رجلٌ عند عمرَ بنِ الخطابِ فقال: السلامُ عليك، فقال عمر: وعليك وعلى أبيك أما يَعْلَمُ أَحَدَكُمْ مَا يَقُولُ إِذَا عَطَسَ؟ فَليَقُل: الحَمْدُ للَّه، وَليَقُلِ القَوْمُ: يرْحَمُكَ [اللَّه]، وَليَقُلْ هُوَ: يَغْفِرُ اللَّه لَكُمْ".

"عَنْ عَلِىٍّ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحدُكُم فَلْيقُلْ: الْحَمْدُ لله، وَلْيَقُلْ يَرْحَمُكُمُ الله، وَلْيَقُلْ: يَهْدِيكُمُ الله وَيُصْلِحُ بِالَكُمْ".

"عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: إِذَا عَطَسَ الإِنْسَانُ فَليَقُلْ: الْحَمْدُ لله، فَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُ: رَحِمَكَ الله، قَالَ: يَغْفِرُ الله لَكَ".

"عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْن جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا عَطَسَ حَمِدَ اللهَ، فَيُقَالُ لَهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ الله، فَيَقُولُ: يَهدِيكُمُ الله وَيُصْلحُ بَالَكُمْ".

"عَنْ نَافِعٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ إِذَا عَطَسَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ الله، قَالَ: يَرْحَمُنَا الله وَإِيَّاكُمْ، وَغَفَرَ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ".

"عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ يُعَلَّمُنَا يَقُولُ: إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ: الْحَمْدُ لله رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، فَإِذَا قَالَ ذَلِكَ: فَلْيَقُلْ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ الله فَإِذَا قَالُوا لَهُ ذَلِكَ فَلْيَقُلْ: يَغْفِرُ الله لِى وَلَكُمْ".

"عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: إِذَا عَطَسَ الرَّجُلُ فَلْيَقُلْ: الْحَمْدُ للهِ رَبِّ العَالمينَ، ولْيَقُلْ: يَرْحمنا اللهُ وَإِيَّاكُمْ، يَغْفِرُ اللهُ لَنَا وَلكُمْ".

"عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: عَطَسَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: مَا أَقُولُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ ! قَالَ: قُلِ الحَمْدُ للهِ رَبِّ العَالَمِينَ، فَقَالُوا: مَا نَقُولُ لَهُ؟ قَالَ: قُولُوا: له يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ، قَالَ: فَمَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ؟ قَالَ: يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ".
