8. Chapter of Khā (Male) (1/11)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting leaning against a cloak in the shade of the Kaaba. We faced severe hardship from the polytheists and they exerted their utmost effort against us, so I said, "Why don't you pray for us?" He replied, "Certainly, those before you would have their flesh and bones scraped off with iron combs, but that would not cause them to turn away from their religion."
[Machine] "I will not grant you [anything] until you disbelieve in Muhammad, may ﷺ . So I said, 'No, by Allah, I will not disbelieve in him until you die and are resurrected.' He said, 'When I am resurrected, I will have wealth and children, then I will fulfill your right.' So Allah revealed the verse: 'So have you seen the one who disbelieves in Our signs?'"

ʿAlī speaking of virtues and trials of Khabbāb b. al-Aratt and supplicating for the dwellers of graves
We traveled with him, that is ʿAlī, when he came back from Ṣiffīn until he was at the door or Kūfah and we were at the graves of seven ˹people˺ toward our right and ʿAlī then said, "Whose graves are these?" They said, "O Leader of the Believers, Khabbāb b. al-Aratt passed away after you left to go to Ṣiffīn. His wished to be buried behind Kūfah. The people buried their dead in their yards and at the doorsteps of their houses. But when they ˹heard from˺ Khabbāb wishing to be buried behind ˹Kūfah˺, the people then buried ˹him there.˺"
ʿAlī then said, "May Allah have Mercy on Khabbāb. He accepted Islam with zeal, emigrated in obedience, lived as a mujāhid (fighter in the cause of Allah), and was heavily tested ˹by Allah˺ with his body in various ways. Allah will never overlook the reward of the one who did iḥsān (excelled) in deeds."
Then he drew closer to the graves and said, "Peace be upon you all, O people of the abodes, from the believers and the Muslims, you are our forerunners and predecessors and we are your followers and soon ˹shall˺ be meeting you. O Allah, forgive us and them and be increasingly pardoning of us and them. Glad tidings to the one who remembered the place of return, worked for ˹an easy˺ accounting, was content with little provision, and was pleased with Allah ﷻ."

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Seventy thousand people from my Ummah will enter Paradise without being held accountable. They are neither fortune-tellers nor ask omens from birds, and they do not practice cauterization and they fully put their trust in their Lord."

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , saying, "A believer does not spend on anything except that he will be rewarded for it, except for the expenditure in this soil."
[Machine] He watched the Prophet ﷺ for one night and prayed until dawn. Then he asked, "O Messenger of Allah, I saw you praying tonight. I have never seen you pray a similar prayer. The Prophet replied, "Indeed, it is a voluntary prayer of desire and fear. I asked my Lord for three things, and He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy us as He destroyed the previous nations, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to let our enemies dominate us and destroy us, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to let my Ummah become divided into sects, and He withheld that from me."
[Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a prayer that he performed until it was close to dawn. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, Duskri held the Kabir's (prayer leader) hand and said, O Messenger of Allah! I swear by my father and my mother, you performed a prayer tonight that I have never seen you perform before. He said: "Yes, it was a voluntary prayer. I asked my Lord three things, and He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy us as He destroyed the nations before us, so He granted me that. I asked Him not to make our enemies prevail over us, so He granted me that. And I asked Him not to separate us into sects, so He withheld that from me."
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Salat, making it long. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah! You have performed Salat (in a manner) which you do not ordinarily perform it.' He said: 'Yes, It was a prayer of hope and fear. In it I asked Allah for three things. He granted me two, and withheld one from me. I asked him that my Ummah not be destroyed by drought. He granted that. I asked him that they not be overcome by enemies from other then them. He granted that. And I asked him that some of them not suffer from the harm of others, and He withheld that."' (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2175)
[Machine] "I observed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so I said, 'Let me see how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prays.' So he prayed. When he finished, I came forward and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, indeed you prayed tonight a prayer that I have never seen you pray before.' He said, 'Verily, it is a prayer of fear and desire. I asked my Lord for three things regarding it, so He gave me two and prevented me from one. I asked Him not to destroy us as He destroyed nations before us, so He granted it. I asked Him not to let an enemy have dominance over us, so He granted it. And I asked Him not to make us divided into factions, so He prevented me from it.'"
[Machine] We were sitting at the door of the Prophet ﷺ when he came out and said, "Do you hear?" We said, "Yes, we have heard two or three times." He said, "Indeed, you will have rulers who will not be truthful and you should not believe them in their lies or support them in their injustice. For whoever believes them in their lies and supports them in their injustice will not meet me at the Pool (of Kawthar)".
[Machine] A man from the tribe of Abdul Qais narrated to us while we were sitting in the grand mosque. He said, "I accompanied the companions of the river, and I was among them. Then I disliked their situation and feared they would kill me. While I was with a group of them, we came upon a village with a river between us and the village. Suddenly, a man from the village came out terrified. They said to him, 'It is as if we terrified you.' He replied, 'Indeed.' They said, 'You have no reason to be scared.' I said, 'By Allah, they recognize him, but I do not recognize him.' They said, 'Are you the son of Khabbab, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?' He replied, 'Yes.' They asked, 'Did you hear any traditions from your father about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?' He answered, 'Yes, I heard my father narrate from the Prophet ﷺ who mentioned a tribulation. He said, 'The one who sits during it is better than the one who stands, and the one who stands is better than the one who walks, and the one who walks is better than the one who runs. If you find yourself in it, then be the slave of Allah who is killed.' They brought him near the bank of the river and slaughtered him. I saw his blood flowing in the water like a colored thread. I have never had companions whom I regarded with greater hatred than them until I found solitude and escaped."

[Machine] I was with the Khawarij and we came across a man. They asked him, "Are you Abdullah ibn Khabbab, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "Yes." They asked him, "Are you narrating to us from your father, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "Yes, I heard my father narrating from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said, 'There will be a time of strife in which the one who stays behind is better than the one who stands, and the one who stands is better than the one who walks, and the one who walks is better than the one who runs. So if that is the case, then be Abdullah, the one who is killed.'" They said to him, "So be you Abdullah, the one who is killed." They took him to the bank of the river and slit his throat, and his blood flowed like the redness of shoes. Then they approached his pregnant wife and slaughtered her. When I saw that, I left them.

[Machine] When people separated, I joined a group of people whom I loved their company more than any other. We traveled to the bank of a river and a mosque was raised for us. Suddenly, a man appeared and when he saw the horses' manes, he came out startled, grabbing his clothes. Our leader asked him, "Why are you alarmed?" He replied, "You have frightened me." Our leader said, "Who are you?" He replied, "I am Abdullah ibn Khabbab." Our leader said, "Tell us a hadith that you heard from your father, who narrated it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." So he narrated a hadith from his father that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned a tribulation, saying, "The one who sits during it is better than the one who stands, and the one who stands is better than the one who walks, and the one who walks is better than the one who runs. But if you come across it, be like Abdullah, the one who was killed." They then took him to the bank of the river and slaughtered him. I saw his blood flowing in the water like a red stream. It was the darkest shade of red. Then they took his mother and his son and killed them. His mother was pregnant, so they cut open her belly. I have never been in the company of a people more hated by me than them until I found an opportunity to escape.

[Machine] I entered upon Khubbab, whom I used to visit, and he was suffering from seven burn marks on his belly. Khubbab said, "If it were not for the Prophet ﷺ forbidding us to invoke death, I would have prayed for it. Behold, our companions have passed away and did not receive any worldly benefits. As for us, we have suffered after them to the point that we have no place left on our bodies except for dust. Verily, a person is rewarded for all his spending except for what he spends on this dust." Khubbab said, "And on that day, he (referring to himself) will build a wall for himself."

[Machine] We came to Khabbab and he was suffering from seven stomach ulcers. He said, "If not for the fact that the Prophet ﷺ prohibited us from praying for death, I would have prayed for it. Then he mentioned those among his companions who had passed away, stating that they had not enjoyed any of their rewards, while we remained after them until we attained things from the world, the value of which nobody can comprehend except by spending it in the earth. And indeed, a Muslim will be rewarded for every penny he spends except what he spends on the earth."

He said, "Indeed, our predecessors who came before us left this world and nothing from it has diminished them. And indeed, we have experienced what comes after them, and we have found no place for it except the dust." He then added, "We came back to him later as he was building a wall for himself, and he said, 'Indeed, a Muslim is rewarded for everything he spends except for something that he puts in the dust. Khabbab said “We came to the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ while he was reclining on an outer garment in the shade of the Ka’bah. Complaining to him we said “Do you not ask Allaah for help for us? And do you not pray to Allaah for us? He sat aright turning red in his face and said “A man before you (i.e., in ancient times) was caught and a pit was dug for him in the earth and then a saw was brought placed on his head and it was broken into two pieces but that did not turn him away from his religion. They were combed in iron combs in flesh and sinews above the bones. Even that did not turn them away from their religion. [Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was sitting in the shade of the Kaaba, wrapped in a cloak. We had faced severe hardship from the polytheists, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, why don't you supplicate to Allah for us?" Mus'ab b. 'Umar was killed at the battle of Uhud, and for him only a coarse cloth would be found as shroud. When we covered his head, his feet showed, and when we covered his feet, his head showed. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Cover his head with it (cloth), and put some rushes over his feet. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2876)

"We emigrated with the Messenger of Allah, seeking the Face of Allah, the Most High, so our reward became due from Allah. Some of us died without enjoying anything of his reward (in this world) among them is Mus'ab bin Umair. He was matyred on the day of Uhud and we could not find anything to shroud him in except a Namirah; if we covered his head with it, his feet were uncovered, and if we covered his feet with it, his head became uncovered. The Messenger of Allah told us to cover his head with it and to put Idhkhir over his feet. And for some of us, the fruits of our labor have ripened and we are gathering them." This is the wording of Isma'il (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1903)
[Machine] "I will not give to you until you disbelieve in Muhammad, so I said, 'I will not disbelieve in Muhammad ﷺ until I die and then am resurrected.' He said, 'And am I not resurrected after death?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then will I not have wealth and children?' He said, 'Allah has revealed: 'Have you seen he who disbelieves in Our signs' to the end [of the verse].' Abu Al-Qasim said, 'This is how Hammad ibn Shu'ayb narrated it from Al-A'mash, from Abu Wail.' And the people narrated it as we mentioned earlier from Al-A'mash, from Abu Al-Dhuhah, from Masruq, from Khabbab. If Hammad ibn Shu'ayb accurately attributed it to Al-A'mash, then it is a singular narration from the hadith of Abu Wail."

[Machine] "Indeed, in this box, there are eighty thousand dirhams, and by Allah, I did not tighten its strings nor did I prevent anyone from taking from it." Then, he cried and was asked, "What makes you cry?" He said, "I cry because my companions have left and the world has not diminished anything from them, and we have remained after them until we do not find a place for them."

[Machine] "And he said about this box, seventy thousand were not tied to it, and no one was prevented from asking from it. I wished it to be like this and like that, either he said 'camel' or he said 'other'."
Had Messenger of Allah ﷺ not stated this.." None should make a request for death," I would have definitely done that. (Using translation from Muslim 2680c)
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us to wish for death, so I will not desire it."
[Machine] We entered upon a blacksmith whom we used to visit, and he was suffering from seven parasites in his stomach. He said, "If I had not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Do not wish for death,' I would have wished for it."
Had Messenger of Allah ﷺ not stated this.." None should make a request for death," I would have definitely done that. (Using translation from Muslim 2680c)
[Machine] We entered upon a blacksmith who had seven burn marks on his stomach. He said, "If it weren't for the fact that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'None of you should wish for death because of the (hardships) of this life',"
[Machine] I have seen myself with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I do not own even a dirham, while this is worth forty thousand.
[Machine] I have seen myself with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "I do not have a single dirham, and indeed, in a corner of my house today there are forty thousand dirhams."
[Machine] We entered the house of Khabbab and found a wall being built. He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Indeed, the believer will be rewarded for his charity, except for something he spends on building.'"
