37. Book of Etiquettes (1/3)
[Machine] "Peace be upon you and upon your mother." Then he asked him, so he said, "Perhaps you have found something about that." He said, "I do not like my mother to be mentioned." He said, "Salem and I were with the Prophet ﷺ when a man sneezed, so he said, 'Peace be upon you,' and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'Peace be upon you and upon your mother.' Then he said, 'When one of you sneezes, let him say, 'Alhamdulillah, Rabbil 'Alamin' (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds), or 'Alhamdulillah 'Ala Kulli Hal' (Praise be to Allah in every circumstance), and let him say to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you,' and let him say, 'May Allah forgive me and you.' And Zaid ibn Qudama Sufyan al-Thawri followed up with his narration from Mansour."
[Machine] "About Mansour's deception, the unknown man, Al-Nakha'i, fell between Hilal ibn Yasaf and Salim ibn Ubaid."
[Machine] Salim, peace be upon you and your mother. Then he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: When one of you sneezes, let them praise Allah and say: 'May Allah have mercy on you.' And let them respond to them: 'May Allah forgive us and you.' This narration from Jarir is apparent, for Hilal ibn Yasaf did not meet Salim ibn Ubayd, nor did he see him. And between them was an unidentified man. As for the wording that some scholars have stated, who do not distinguish between authentic and weak narrations in the matter of the Prophet's ﷺ saying, the sneezer should say to the one who says 'Yahdikumullah' (May Allah guide you) and 'Yuslih balakum' (May He rectify your affairs), it is understood that this addressing is for the People of the Book, not the Muslims.
The Jews used to try to sneezes in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ hoping that he would say to them: "Allah have mercy on you!" but he would say: May Allah guide you and grant you well-being! (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5038)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Ali, ask Allah for guidance and righteousness. Remember that guidance leads you on the right path, and righteousness guides your arrow to its target." Then the Prophet ﷺ commanded his son, Hasan ibn Ali, the leader of the youth of Paradise, similar to how he commanded his father. This hadith was narrated by Yazid ibn Abi Maryam from Abu al-Jawzaa from Hasan ibn Ali in the supplication of Qunut that the Prophet ﷺ taught him, "O Allah, guide me as You have guided others." This hadith is more famous than to mention its chain of narrators and sources. We return to the authentic reports regarding the etiquettes that were not mentioned by the two Imams. Imam Al-Dhahabi was silent about it in his summary.
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade a man from placing one leg over the other while lying down."
Jabir reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the wrapping of oneself completely leaving no room for the arm and supporting oneself when sitting with a single garment wrapped round one's knees and a person raising one of his feet and placing it on the other while lying on his back. (Using translation from Muslim 2099c)
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ passed by him while he was leaning on the arm of his hand behind his back and said, "He sits in the manner of those who are condemned."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best gatherings are the most spacious."
[Machine] Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri was given permission to attend a funeral in his tribe, so he went while the people had already taken their seats. When they saw him, they made room for him, and he sat in a corner and said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The best of gatherings are the most spacious.'"
[Machine] "So when I was appointed as his deputy, I went to visit him and sought permission from him. He granted me permission, so I sat beside him and looked at him. He said to me, 'O Ibnu Ka'b, why do I see you staring at me?' I said, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, I am amazed by the changes in your complexion, the transformation of your body, and the graying of your hair.' He said, 'O Ibnu Ka'b, what if you were to see me after three days in my grave, with ants devouring my eye sockets, and my cheeks oozing pus, and worms coming out of my throat and mouth?' I would have been more astonished.' Leave that and narrate to me the hadith of Ibn Abbas from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' So I said, 'Ibn Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, everything has its honor, and the most honorable gatherings are those facing the Qiblah. And you sit among yourselves with trustworthiness. Kill the snake and the scorpion even while in your prayers. Do not cover the walls of your houses, and let no one among you look into the book of his brother without his permission. And none of you should pray behind someone who is sleeping or talking.'''
Note: The phrase "بطل الحديث" (batil al-hadith) does not have a direct equivalent in English, but it can be understood as meaning the end of the narration or the conclusion of the statement.
[Machine] "Whoever wants to be the strongest among people, let them rely on Allah. And whoever wants to be the most honored among people, let them fear Allah. And whoever wants to be the richest among people, let them trust in what is in Allah's hands more than what is in their own hands."
He also said, "Shall I inform you about the worst of people?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Those who do not avoid causing harm to others, and those who do not accept apologies, and those who do not forgive sins."
They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Those who do not expect good from others, and those who are not safe from the evil of others. Verily, Jesus, son of Mary, peace be upon him, stood among the Children of Israel and said, 'O Children of Israel, do not speak wisdom in the presence of the ignorant, lest you oppress it. And do not deprive its people of it, lest you oppress them. And do not oppress the oppressor, lest your virtue is nullified before your Lord, O Children of Israel.'"
"There are three matters in which their deception is clear, so stay away from them. And there is a matter in which there is disagreement, so return it to Allah, the Almighty."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us while we were in the rank after Maghrib prayer. He said, "O so-and-so, go with so-and-so, and O so-and-so, go with so-and-so," until there were five of us left. He then said, "Get up and come with me." So we did and entered upon Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) before the veil was descended. He said, "O Aisha, feed us." She brought some food and he said, "O Aisha, bring us more." She brought some barley and he said, "O Aisha, give us something to drink." She brought some water in a utensil. Then he said, "If you wish, you can spend the night with us, and if you wish, you can go back to the mosque to sleep there." So, we slept in the mosque. In the last part of the night, the Prophet ﷺ came to me while I was sleeping on my belly and kicked me with his foot and said, "What is wrong with you? This is a sleep that Allah hates or dislikes."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a man lying on his stomach, so he hit him with his foot and said, "Indeed, this is a position that Allah Almighty does not like."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited a man from sitting between the sun and the shade."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ saw me while I was sitting in the sun and he said, "Move to the shade, as it is blessed."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ saw my father sitting in the sun, so he said, "Move to the shade, for it is blessed."
[Machine] From Abu Abdullah, the servant of Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari, from Sa'id ibn Abi Hassan who said: "We were in a gathering, bearing witness, when Abu Bakrah entered upon us. A man stood up from his seat and Abu Bakrah said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A man should not establish the prayer of another man in his gathering, then sit in it, and you should not wipe your hand on the garment of someone you do not own." The two sheikhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) agreed on the hadith of standing, but they did not mention the hadith of the garment, which is sahih in its chain of narration."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited two types of sitting and two types of clothing. As for the two types of sitting, one is between shade and sun, and the other is to wrap oneself in a garment that exposes one's private parts. As for the two types of clothing, one is to pray in a garment without wearing it as a turban, and the other is to pray in pants without wearing a cloak over it.
[Machine] "I have never seen anyone with qualities of resemblance, guidance, and tranquility like the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more than Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , in her standing and sitting." She said, "Whenever she entered upon the Prophet ﷺ , he would stand up to greet her, kiss her, and make her sit in his place. And when the Prophet ﷺ entered upon her, she would stand up from her place, kiss him, and make him sit in her place." This narration is on the condition of Bukhari and Muslim.
"When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would give the Salam he would do so three times, and when he would say a statement, he would say it three times." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2723)
Al-Ala b. al-Hadrami wrote to the prophet (May peace be upon him), and he began with his name. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5135)
[Machine] "Do you count the names of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that Jubayr ibn Muth'im used to mention?" He said, "Yes, they are six: Muhammad, Ahmad, Khātam (the Seal), Hāshir (the Gatherer), `Āqib (the Last), and Māh (the Effacer). As for Hāshir, he will be resurrected with the Hour [as a warner to you] (a harbinger of a severe punishment) [Surah Saba, 34:46]. And as for `Āqib, he is the last of the Prophets. And as for Māh, Allah will deprive through him the evil deeds of those who follow him."
