3. Companions of the Household
“My grandfather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, taught me some words to say in Qunut of Witr: Allahumma ‘afini fiman ‘afait, wa tawallani fiman tawallait, wahdini fiman hadait, wa qini sharra ma qadait, wa barik li fima a’tait. Subhanaka rabbana tabarakta wa ta’alait (O Allah, pardon me along with those whom You have pardoned, be an ally to me along with those whom You are an ally to, guide me along with those whom You have guided, protect me from the evil that You have decreed, and bless for me that which You have bestowed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted).” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1178)
[Machine] A man left you yesterday, who was not preceded by the former ones in knowledge, nor can he be reached by the later ones. He was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sent with the banner by Gabriel on his right and Michael on his left. He will not leave until it is opened for him.
[Machine] A man left you yesterday who the early ones before him preceded in knowledge and the later ones did not comprehend, if he was indeed the messenger of Allah ﷺ who sent him and gave him the banner, he would not leave until victory is granted to him, and he did not leave behind any yellow or white except seven hundred dirhams from his offerings that he would allocate to a servant for his family.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him to say in the Witr prayer, and he mentioned a similar narration to the one of Yunus.
[Machine] He passed by them a funeral and the people stood up but he did not. Al-Hasan said: "What did you do? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only stood up to disturb the Jew's corpse."
[Machine] Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him):
I said to Al-Hasan ibn Ali, "What do you remember from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "I remember that I took a date from the dates of charity and put it in my mouth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it out with his saliva and then put it back into the dates. A man said to him, 'Why don't you eat this date?' He replied, 'Verily, we do not eat charity.' He (the man) said, 'He used to teach us this supplication: O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being, take charge of me among those You have taken charge of, bless for me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Indeed, the one whom You take as a guardian is never humiliated. And sometimes he used to say, 'You are blessed, our Lord, and exalted.'"
[Machine] He said to Hasan bin Ali, "What do you remember from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He replied, "He allowed me to enter the charity room and I took a date from it and put it in my mouth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Throw it away, as it is not lawful for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or any member of his household.'"
[Machine] We were with Hasan ibn Ali and he was asked, "What is the most interesting thing you learned from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "I was walking with him when we passed by a pile of charity dates. I took a date and threw it in my mouth, and he took it with his saliva. Some people asked, 'Why didn't you leave it?' He said, 'Indeed, it is not permissible for us, the family of Muhammad, to take charity.' And I learned from him the five daily prayers."
[Machine] Did you not see the Prophet ﷺ stand up when a funeral passed by him? Ibn Abbas replied, "Yes, he did stand up and had actually been sitting. And Al-Hasan did not reject what Ibn Abbas said."
[Machine] I asked Hasan ibn Ali: "What do you remember from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said: "I remember from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I took a date from the charity dates and put it in my mouth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it out with his saliva and put it back with the dates. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what made you pick up this date for this young child? He said: Indeed, we, the family of Muhammad, are not allowed to take charity. He said: And he used to say: Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt, for truthfulness brings tranquility and lying brings doubt. He said: And he used to teach us this supplication: O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, and heal me among those whom You have healed, and take care of me among those whom You have taken care of, and bless what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Indeed, You decree and no one can decree over You, and whoever You support is not humiliated. Shu`ba said: And I think he (Hasan) also said: Blessed are You, our Lord, and exalted."
"When a funeral procession passed by Ibn Abbas and Hasan ibn Ali, one of them stood up while the other remained seated. The one who stood up said, 'Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up?' The other replied, 'Yes, and he sat down.'"

The Prophet ﷺ said: A beggar has the right though he may be riding (a horse). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1665)
[Machine] About the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ? He said, "I ascended to a room and I took a date and put it in my mouth, then the Prophet, ﷺ , said, 'Throw it, for it is not lawful for us to accept charity.'"
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Surely, of the excellence of a person's Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2318)
[Machine] He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only stood up for the funeral procession of a Jewish man who passed by him, so he said, 'Announce to me his fragrance.'"
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "There is no Muslim man or woman who is afflicted with a calamity and then mentions it, even if their period of affliction is long, except that the angels say, 'May Allah renew your reward for this, and may He grant you something similar in return on the day you were afflicted with it.'"
[Machine] The Prophet, ﷺ , said some words that I say during the Witr prayer and recalled the narration.

3.3 Aqil b. Abu Talib
[Machine] Aqeel, the son of Abu Talib, got married and came to us. We said to him, "Congratulations on prosperity and children!" He replied, "Do not say that, for the Prophet ﷺ forbade us from saying such. Instead, you should say, 'May Allah bless you and may He bless her for you.'"

They asked, "Then what should we say, O Abu Yazid?" He replied, "Say, 'May Allah bless you and bless upon you.' That is how we used to be instructed."
3.4 Ja'far b. Abu Talib
Ḥadīth of the Hijrah
The Negus of Abyssinia hears the message of Islam from Ja'far b. Abu Talib
[Machine] When we settled in the land of Abyssinia, we lived beside the best neighbor — the Negus. We were safe regarding our religion, we worshipped Allah without harm, and we did not hear anything that we disliked. But when Quraysh learned of this, they conspired to send to the Negus two strong men and to present gifts to him from the fine goods of Makkah. Of all that was most admired in Makkah’s trade, leather was among the best, so they gathered much leather for him, and they did not leave any of his bishops without sending him a gift. Then they sent all this with Abdullah ibn Abi Rabi‘a ibn al-Mughirah al-Makhzumi and Amr ibn al-‘As ibn Wa’il al-Sahmi, instructing them and saying, “Give each bishop his gift before you speak to the Negus about them, then present the Negus with his gifts, and then ask him to hand them (the Muslims) over to you before he speaks with them.”
She said: So the two of them set out and came to the Negus while we were living in the best of homes and beside the best of neighbors. They gave every bishop his gift before speaking to the Negus. Then they said to each bishop, “Some foolish youths from among us have fled to the land of the king. They have abandoned the religion of their people, but they have not entered your religion either. Instead, they brought an innovated religion unknown to us and unknown to you. The nobles of their people have sent us to the king concerning them, so that he might return them. When we speak to the king about them, advise him to hand them over to us without speaking to them. For their people know them best, and are most aware of what they have blamed them for.” They replied, “Yes.”
Then they presented the Negus with his gifts, and he accepted them. They spoke to him, saying, “O King, some foolish youths from among us have fled to your land. They have abandoned the religion of their people but have not entered into your religion. They have brought an innovated religion unknown to us and to you. The nobles of their people — their fathers, uncles, and clans — have sent us to you to return them. They know them best and are most aware of what they have criticized them for.”
She said: Nothing was more hateful to Abdullah ibn Abi Rabi‘a and Amr ibn al-‘As than that the Negus should hear their (the Muslims’) words. So the bishops around him said, “They have spoken the truth, O King. Their people know them best and are most aware of what they have criticized them for. Hand them over to these two so that they may return them to their land and their people.”
She said: Then the Negus became angry and said, “No, by Allah! I will not hand them over to the two, nor will I plot against a people who have sought my protection, settled in my land, and chosen me over others — until I summon them and ask them what these two say about them. If it is as they claim, I will hand them over to them and return them to their people. But if it is otherwise, I will protect them and be a good neighbor to them so long as they remain with me.” Then he sent for the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and summoned them.
When his messenger came to them, they gathered together and said to one another, “What will you say to the king when you go to him?” They replied, “By Allah, we will say only what we know and what our Prophet ﷺ has taught and commanded us, no matter what comes of it.”
When they came to him, the Negus had gathered his bishops, who spread their scriptures around him. He asked them, “What is this religion for which you have separated from your people, yet you have not entered into my religion nor the religion of any other nations?”
She said: It was Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib who spoke to him and said, “O King, we were a people of ignorance. We worshipped idols, ate carrion, committed vile acts, severed family ties, mistreated our neighbors, and the strong among us consumed the weak. We remained in that state until Allah sent to us a Messenger from among ourselves, whose lineage, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and chastity we knew well. He called us to Allah, that we might worship Him alone and abandon what we and our fathers had worshipped besides Him of stones and idols. He commanded us to speak the truth, fulfill trusts, maintain family ties, show good treatment to neighbors, and refrain from the unlawful and from bloodshed. He forbade us from immorality, false speech, consuming the wealth of orphans, and slandering chaste women. He commanded us to worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him, and he commanded us to pray, give zakah, and fast.”
He said: “So he listed for him the matters of Islam. We believed him, trusted him, and followed him in what he brought. We worshipped Allah alone without associating anything with Him. We declared unlawful what he forbade us and lawful what he permitted us. Then our people rose against us, tortured us, and sought to turn us away from our religion to return us to idol worship and to permit for us the abominations we had once permitted. When they oppressed us, wronged us, and restricted us, coming between us and our religion, we fled to your land. We chose you above all others, desiring your protection and hoping we would not be wronged in your presence, O King.”
The Negus said to Ja‘far: “Do you have anything with you of what has come from Allah?”
Ja‘far replied: “Yes.”
The Negus said: “Then recite it to me.”
So Ja‘far recited to him from the opening verses of Kāf Hā Yā ‘Ayn Sād (Surat Maryam 19). By Allah, the Negus wept until his beard was wet, and his bishops wept until their scriptures were soaked by their tears, when they heard what was recited to them. Then the Negus said: “Indeed, this and what came with Moses both come from the same lamp. Go, for by Allah I will never hand them over to you, nor will I conspire against them.”
Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When they left his presence, Amr ibn al-‘As said: “By Allah, tomorrow I will tell him something about them that will uproot them completely.” Abdullah ibn Abi Rabi‘a, who was the more God-fearing of the two men, said to him: “Do not do it, for they have kinship with us, even if they opposed us.” But Amr said: “By Allah, I will inform him that they claim that Jesus the son of Mary is only a servant.”
The next day, Amr came before the Negus and said: “O King, they say a grave thing about Jesus the son of Mary. Send for them and ask them what they say concerning him.”
So he sent for them to question them about it. Umm Salama said: Nothing ever descended upon us that was heavier than this. The companions gathered and said to each other: “What will you say about Jesus when he asks you?” They said: “By Allah, we will say about him only what Allah has said and what our Prophet ﷺ brought to us, whatever may come of it.”
When they entered upon the Negus, he asked: “What do you say about Jesus the son of Mary?”
Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib replied: “We say about him what our Prophet ﷺ has brought: He is the servant of Allah, His messenger, His spirit, and His word which He cast into Mary, the pure virgin.”
The Negus struck his hand upon the ground, picked up a stick, and said: “By Allah, Jesus the son of Mary is no more than what you have said, not even as much as this stick.”
The bishops around him sniffed and grumbled at his words, but he said: “Even if you grumble! By Allah, go — for you are safe in my land. Whoever insults you will pay the penalty. I would not wish to have a mountain of gold in exchange for harming a single one of you. Return to them their gifts, for we have no need of them. By Allah, Allah did not take a bribe from me when He restored my kingdom to me, so shall I take a bribe in this matter? Nor did the people obey me against His will, so shall I obey them against His will?”
So the two men went out from him disgraced, with all they had brought rejected. And we remained with the Negus in the best home, with the best neighbor.
By Allah, while we were in that state, one came to challenge him for his throne. By Allah, we had never known a sorrow greater than the sorrow we felt then, fearing that another ruler might succeed him who would not know our right as the Negus knew it.
The Negus set out with his forces, and between us and them was the width of the Nile. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Who will go and attend the battle of the people, and bring us back news?”
Al-Zubair ibn al-‘Awwam said: “I will.” He was the youngest among us. So they blew up a waterskin for him, which he placed on his chest, then he swam across on it until he reached the side of the Nile where the armies met. He went on until he attended the battle.
Meanwhile, we prayed to Allah for the victory of the Negus over his enemy and for his authority to be established in his land. Allah gave him victory, his affairs were secured over Abyssinia, and we remained with him in the best condition until we eventually came back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in Makkah.

3.5 Abdullah b. Ja'far b. Abu Talib
I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ eating fresh dates with snake cucumber. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5440)
[Machine] "Abdullah bin Ja'far to Ibn Zubair, do you remember when we met the messenger of Allah, ﷺ , you, me, and Ibn Abbas? He said, 'Yes.' Then we carried him and left you. Isma'il asked me once, 'Do you remember when we met the messenger of Allah, ﷺ , you, me, and Ibn Abbas?' So I said, 'Yes.' Then we carried him and left you."
Abdullah b. Ja'far reported that when Messenger of Allah (may peace be, upon him) came back from a journey, the children of his family used to accord him welcome. It was in this way that once he came back from a journey and I went to him first of all. He mounted me before him. Then there came one of the two sons of Fatima and he mounted him behind him and this is how we three entered Medina riding on a beast. (Using translation from Muslim 2428a)
“Some people were bringing meat to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: ‘The best meat is the meat of the back.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3308)
‘Abd Allaah bin Jafar said “The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ seated me behind him(on his ride) one day, and told me secretly a thing asking me not to tell it to anyone. The place for easing dearer to the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ was a mound or host of palm trees by which he could conceal himself. He entered the garden of a man from the Ansar(Helpers). All of a sudden when a Camel saw the Prophet ﷺ it wept tenderly producing yearning sound and it eyes flowed. The Prophet ﷺ came to it and wiped the temple of its head. So it kept silence. He then said “Who is the master of this Camel? Whose Camel is this? A young man from the Ansar came and said “This is mine, Apostle of Allaah ﷺ.” He said “Don’t you fear Allaah about this beast which Allaah has given in your possession. It has complained to me that you keep it hungry and load it heavily which fatigues it.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2549)

[Machine] And Abdullah ibn Ja'far said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear a signet ring on his right hand."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever has doubt during his prayer, let him prostrate twice after he said the taslim." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1250)
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , when he would sneeze, would praise Allah, and it would be said to him: "May Allah have mercy on you". He would reply: "May Allah guide you and rectify your affairs."
[Machine] He said, "The last thing I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ holding in one hand were dates, and in the other hand, cucumbers. He was eating from these and biting from those, and he said, 'The most delicious part of the sheep is the back meat.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army, led by Zaid ibn Haritha. If Zaid is killed or martyred, then your leader is Jafar. If Jafar is killed or martyred, then your leader is Abdullah ibn Rawaha. They met the enemy, and Zaid took the flag and fought until he was killed. Then Jafar took the flag and fought until he was killed. Then Abdullah ibn Rawaha took the flag and fought until he was killed. Then Khalid ibn Walid took the flag from them and Allah granted him victory. The Prophet ﷺ came out to the people and praised and thanked Allah. He said, "Your brothers have confronted the enemy. Zaid took the flag and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then Jafar ibn Abi Talib took the flag and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then Abdullah ibn Rawaha took the flag and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then Khalid ibn Walid, the Sword of Allah, took the flag and Allah granted him victory." He gave them some time and then he said, "Do not cry for my brother any more. Bring me the sons of my brother." So they brought us as if we were young birds, and he said, "Call the barber for me." So the barber came and shaved our heads. Then he took my hand and raised it, saying, "O Allah, replace Jafar with his family, and bless Abdullah in his trade." He repeated this three times. Then our mother came and mentioned her wishes for him. She made him happy, and he said, "Are you afraid for them while I am their guardian in this world and the Hereafter?"

[Machine] When the news of Jafar's death came, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Prepare food for the family of Jafar, for they have been occupied with a matter or have received something that distracts them."
The Prophet ﷺ said: Anyone who is in doubt in his prayer should make two prostrations after giving the salutation. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1033)
[Machine] From Uqbah ibn Muhammad ibn Al-Harith, he mentioned something similar to it with his chain of narration.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode his camel, and I joined him as his companion. Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped somewhere, he would prefer the place where there was a target to aim at or date palms. He entered the house of a man from the Ansar, and there was a jar of water for him. When the Prophet ﷺ saw it, he felt affectionate and his eyes welled up with tears. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended from his camel, wiped his forehead and his arms, then he said, "Whose camel is this?" A young man from the Ansar came forward and said, "It's mine." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Don't you fear Allah regarding this animal that Allah has made you its caretaker? He complained to me and claimed that you starve him and exhaust him." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went into the wall of the house to relieve himself. He performed ablution and came back, with water dripping from his beard onto his chest. He whispered something to me that I am not to disclose to anyone. We put pressure on him to tell us, but he said, "I will not divulge the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until I meet Allah."

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The best meat is the meat of the back."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is not befitting for a prophet to say that he is better than Yunus ibn Matta." Abu Abdur Rahman reported it and Haroon ibn Ma'roof narrated a similar hadith.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was commanded to give glad tidings to Khadijah of a house made of reeds, where there is no noise or fatigue."
“Some people were bringing meat to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: ‘The best meat is the meat of the back.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3308)
[Machine] "If you were to see me, Qutham and 'Ubaidullah ibn 'Abbas, we were children playing when the Prophet ﷺ passed by on an animal. He said, 'Lift this up to me.' So, I carried him in front of him, and he said to Qutham, 'Lift this up to me.' So, he placed him behind him. And 'Ubaidullah was more beloved to 'Abbas than Qutham. So, he felt shy of his uncle and carried Qutham instead. He then wiped his hand over my head three times and said, 'Whenever Allah wipes, let Ja'far be the successor in his child.' I said to 'Abdullah, 'What happened to Qutham?' He said, 'He was martyred.' I said, 'Allah knows best about the good, and His Messenger knows best about the good.' He said, 'Yes.'"

[Machine] When it enters upon you, say: "There is no deity except Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Great Throne. Praise be to Allah, Lord of all the worlds." And it has been claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he got upset, he would say: "This is what Hammad said." So I thought that he said it, but it did not reach him.
