8. Shāmīs
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: The difference between our fasting and that of the people of the Book is eating shortly before dawn. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2343)
[Machine] "For me, O Amr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Strengthen your weapon and clothes, and come to me.' So, I did as he commanded and went to him. He was performing ablution, so I looked at him attentively and observed his movements. Then, he said, 'O Amr, I want to appoint you as a leader, so may Allah grant you security and provide you with spoils of war. And I have selected for you a bountiful share of wealth.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I did not embrace Islam out of desire for wealth, but rather out of desire for jihad and companionship with you.' He said, 'O Amr, there is indeed goodness in wealth for a righteous person.' According to another version, he said, 'O Amr, there is indeed goodness in earning wealth through righteous means.' Abu Ubayd mentioned that the correct version has "kasr al-nun" and "kasr al-ayn" instead of "nasb al-nun" and "kasr al-ayn", respectively."
[Machine] "Do not impose upon us the custom of our Prophet when his wife, the mother of his child, dies, for he mourned for her for four months and ten days."
I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ quite audibly and not secretly: Behold! the posterity of my fathers, that is, so and so, are not my friends. Verily Allah and the pious believers are my friends. (Using translation from Muslim 215)
[Machine] "He sent him to Ali, seeking his permission to meet Asma bint Umays. So Ali granted him permission until he finished his business. Then he asked the master, Umar, about that, and he said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us or forbade entering upon women without the permission of their husbands."
A similar report was narrated from 'Aishah from the Messenger of Allah. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4929)
[Machine] A man said to 'Amr ibn al-'As, "Did you not see a man who died while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved him? Was he not a righteous man?" 'Amr replied, "Yes, indeed." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died while he loved you and utilized your services." 'Amr said, "Indeed, he utilized me, but by Allah, I do not know whether he loved me or sought my assistance. However, I will tell you about two men whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved and they loved him: Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and 'Ammar ibn Yasir."
[Machine] Allah will place this matter in the hands of a majority of the Arab people, except for others. Amr ibn Al-Aas said, "You have lied! I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The Quraysh are the leaders of the people in both goodness and evil until the Day of Judgment.'"
[Machine] Amr ibn Al-Aas said, "How far are you from the guidance of your Prophet ﷺ ! As for him, he was the least attached to worldly possessions among people, while you are the most desirous of them."
[Machine] There was a panic in the city, so I went to Salim, the servant of Abu Hudhayfah, who was sharpening his sword. I took a sword and sharpened it with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O people, shouldn't your panic be towards Allah and His Messenger?" Then he said, "Shouldn't you do as these two believing men did?"
Who amongst people are dearest to you? He said: A'isha. He then said: Who amongst men? He said: Her father, and I said: And who next? He said: Umar. He then enumerated some other men. (Using translation from Muslim 2384)
[Machine] He said, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him in the year of the delegations, he said: "I had a wet dream on a cold and extremely cold night, so I feared that if I performed ablution, it would harm me. So I performed dry ablution (tayammum) and then prayed the morning prayer with my companions. When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I mentioned this to him. He said, "O 'Amr, did you pray with your companions while you were in a state of impurity?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah. I had a wet dream on a cold and extremely cold night, so I was afraid that if I performed ablution, it would harm me." And I remembered the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He): "And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful." [Quran 4:29] So I performed dry ablution and then prayed." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and did not say anything.
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I will pledge allegiance to you on the condition that you forgive me for my past sins." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Islam erases what came before it, and Hijrah (migration) erases what came before it." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "By Allah, I have never seen anyone more modest than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I could not even look at him directly, nor could I approach him with whatever I desired, until Allah took him (in death) with that modesty from him."
[Machine] A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, which action is the best?" He replied, "Belief in Allah and testifying to His Oneness, and jihad in His cause." The man said, "You have mentioned some of them, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Let your speech be good and provide food, and be kind and have good manners." The man said, "I need one word." The Messenger of Allah said to him, "Go, and do not put a burden on yourself that Allah will be responsible for."
[Machine] I heard Amr ibn al-As saying while he was on the pulpit addressing the people, "How far removed you are from the guidance of your Prophet ﷺ! As for him, he was the least interested among the people in worldly matters, while you are the most desirous of them."
That he heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "If a judge gives a verdict according to the best of his knowledge and his verdict is correct (i.e. agrees with Allah and His Apostle's verdict) he will receive a double reward, and if he gives a verdict according to the best of his knowledge and his verdict is wrong, (i.e. against that of Allah and His Apostle) even then he will get a reward ." (Using translation from Bukhārī 7352)
[Machine] I heard Amr bin Al-Aas say, "You have become inclined towards what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to abstain from. You desire the dunya (worldly matters), while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to refrain from it. By Allah, not a single night passed upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his lifetime except that he had more than he possessed. Some companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'We have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking some worldly gain.' He replied, 'Other than Yahya (meaning John the Baptist), and by Allah, there was not a single day that passed upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except that he had more than he possessed.'"
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ and in another place he said, Malik ibn Abdullah narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr that the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge in Allah from seven types of deaths: sudden death, snake bite, predatory animals, drowning, burning, being crushed by something or being crushed by it, and being killed during a landslide.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said that the Quran was revealed in seven different dialects, so whichever dialect you recite it in, you are correct. Therefore, do not dispute about it as arguing about it is disbelief.
'If a judge passes a judgment having exerted himself to arrive at what is correct, and he is indeed correct, he will have two rewards. If he passes judgment having exerted himself to arrive at what is correct, but it is incorrect, he will have one reward.'" I narrated it to Abu Bakr bin Hazm and he said: "This is what Abu Salamah narrated to me from Abu Hurairah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3574)
[Machine] Amr ibn al-As heard a man reciting a verse from the Quran, so he asked, "Who taught you this?" The man replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught it to me." Amr ibn al-As and the man went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and one of them said, "O Messenger of Allah, this verse says such and such," and recited it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is how it was revealed." Then the other person recited the same verse to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, is it not like this?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is how it was revealed." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Indeed, the Quran was revealed with seven different modes of recitation, so whichever of these you have recited, you are correct. Do not dispute over it, for argumentation over the Quran is disbelief or a verse of disbelief."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "No people indulge in usury without being afflicted by the year, and no people indulge in bribery without being afflicted by fear."
[Machine] He returned then asked for permission again, and Ali said, "May I enter?" They said, "Yes," so he entered and Ali said to him, "What prevented you from entering when you did not find me here?" He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from entering upon those who are absent."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came across two disputing parties, and he said to Amr, "Arbitrate between them, O Amr." He replied, "You are more deserving of that than me, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "But if you arbitrate between them and pass judgment, what will I get?" Amr answered, "If I pass judgment between them and succeed, I will receive ten rewards. But if I arbitrate and make a mistake, I will still receive one reward."
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, he said that if you strive and achieve the matter, you will have ten rewards. And if you strive and make a mistake, you will still receive one reward.
[Machine] "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in this place when suddenly we saw many crows. Among them was a crow with a red beak and legs. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'No woman will enter Paradise except if she is like this crow among these crows.' Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'So when a woman has her adornments and rings in her hands, she should cover her hands and not expose them.' Hasan did not say anything about the two midday prayers."
[Machine] "When Allah ﷻ placed Islam in my heart, I went to the Prophet ﷺ to pledge allegiance to him. He extended his hand to me, but I said, 'I will not pledge allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allah, until you forgive me for my past sins.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to me, 'O 'Amr, do you not know that migration erases what came before it of sins? O 'Amr, do you not know that Islam erases what came before it of sins?'"
