17. Sūrat al-Isrāʾ (2/3)

١٧۔ سُورَةُ الإسْرَاء ص ٢

The Night Journey (Meccan)

quran:17:51

Or ˹any˺ creation of that which is great within your breasts." And they will say, "Who will restore us?" Say, "He who brought you forth the first time." Then they will nod their heads toward you and say, "When is that?" Say, "Perhaps it will be soon -  

or some creation yet greater in your breasts, ˹something yet˺ far less able to accept life, aside from bones and fragments, a spirit will undoubtedly be made to exist in you ˹to bring you back to life˺. They will then say, ‘Who shall bring us back?’, to life. Say: ‘He Who originated you, created you, the first time, when you had not been anything ˹in existence˺, because the One Who is able to initiate ˹creation˺ is also able to repeat ˹it˺, indeed, this ˹repetition˺ is easier ˹than the initiation˺. Then they will shake their heads at you, stupefied, and they will say, mockingly: ‘When will it be?’, that is, the Resurrection. Say: ‘Maybe it is near!’
القرآن:١٧:٥١

أَوْ خَلْقًا مِمَّا يَكْبُرُ فِي صُدُورِكُمْ ۚ فَسَيَقُولُونَ مَنْ يُعِيدُنَا ۖ قُلِ الَّذِي فَطَرَكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ ۚ فَسَيُنْغِضُونَ إِلَيْكَ رُءُوسَهُمْ وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هُوَ ۖ قُلْ عَسَىٰ أَنْ يَكُونَ قَرِيبًا  

{أو خلقا مما يكبر في صدوركم} يعظم عن قبول الحياة فضلا عن العظام والرفات فلا بد من إيجاد الروح فيكم {فسيقولون من يعيدنا} إلى الحياة {قل الذي فطركم} خلقكم {أول مرة} ولم تكونوا شيئا لأن القادر على البدء قادر على الإعادة بل هي أهون {فسينغضون} يحركون {إليك رءوسهم} تعجبا {ويقولون} استهزاء {متى هو} أي البعث {قل عسى أن يكون قريبا}.
quran:17:52

On the Day He will call you and you will respond with praise of Him and think that you had not remained ˹in the world˺ except for a little."  

The day He calls you, ˹the day˺ He calls out to you from your graves by the tongue of ˹the archangel˺ Isrāfīl, you will respond, you will answer His call from your graves, with His praise, by His command — it is also said to mean ˹that you will respond˺ ‘and praise be to Him’ — and you will think that you have remained, in this world, only a little, because of the terror of what you will see ˹on that day˺.
القرآن:١٧:٥٢

يَوْمَ يَدْعُوكُمْ فَتَسْتَجِيبُونَ بِحَمْدِهِ وَتَظُنُّونَ إِنْ لَبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا  

{يوم يدعوكم} يناديكم من القبور على لسان إسرافيل {فتستجيبون} فتجيبون دعوته من القبور {بحمده} بأمره وقيل وله الحمد {وتظنون إن} ما {لبثتم} في الدنيا {إلا قليلا} لهول ما ترون.
quran:17:53

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces ˹dissension˺ among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.  

And tell My servants, the believers, to speak, to disbelievers, that, word, which is finer. For Satan indeed incites ill feeling, he makes trouble, between them, and Satan is indeed man’s manifest enemy, his enmity is evident. The ‘finer word’ is ˹to say˺ this:
القرآن:١٧:٥٣

وَقُلْ لِعِبَادِي يَقُولُوا الَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ ۚ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَنْزَغُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ كَانَ لِلْإِنْسَانِ عَدُوًّا مُبِينًا  

{وقل لعبادي} المؤمنين {يقولوا} للكفار الكلمة {التي هي أحسن إن الشيطان ينزغ} يفسد {بينهم إن الشيطان كان للإنسان عدوا مبينا} بين العداوة والكلمة التي هي أحسن هي:
quran:17:54

Your Lord is most knowing of you. If He wills, He will have mercy upon you; or if He wills, He will punish you. And We have not sent you, ˹O Muhammad˺, over them as a manager.  

Your Lord knows you best. If He will, He will have mercy on you, by way of ˹granting you˺ repentance and faith, or, if He will, for you to be chastised, He will chastise you, by having you die in disbelief. And We did not send you to be a guardian over them, and so compel them to ˹embrace˺ faith — this was ˹revealed˺ before the command to fight ˹them˺.
القرآن:١٧:٥٤

رَبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ ۖ إِنْ يَشَأْ يَرْحَمْكُمْ أَوْ إِنْ يَشَأْ يُعَذِّبْكُمْ ۚ وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَكِيلًا  

{ربكم أعلم بكم إن يشأ يرحمكم} بالتوبة والإيمان {أو إن يشأ} تعذيبكم {يعذبكم} بالموت على الكفر {وما أرسلناك عليهم وكيلاً} فتجبرهم على الإيمان وهذا قبل الأمر بالقتال.
quran:17:55

And your Lord is most knowing of whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And We have made some of the prophets exceed others ˹in various ways˺, and to David We gave the book ˹of Psalms˺.  

And your Lord knows best all who are in the heavens and the earth, thus endowing them ˹each one˺ with what He will, according to the measure of their states. And verily We have preferred some of the prophets above others, endowing each of them with a particular merit: Moses, with being spoken to; Abraham, with Friendship; and Muhammad (s), with the Night Journey; and We gave David the Psalms.
القرآن:١٧:٥٥

وَرَبُّكَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۗ وَلَقَدْ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَ النَّبِيِّينَ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ ۖ وَآتَيْنَا دَاوُودَ زَبُورًا  

{وربك أعلم بمن في السماوات والأرض} فيخصهم بما شاء على قدر أحوالهم {ولقد فضلنا بعض النبيين على بعض} بتخصيص كل منهم بفضيلة كموسى بالكلام وإبراهيم بالخلة ومحمد بالإسراء {وآتينا داود زبورا}.
quran:17:56

Say, "Invoke those you have claimed ˹as gods˺ besides Him, for they do not possess the ˹ability for˺ removal of adversity from you or ˹for its˺ transfer ˹to someone else˺."  

Say, to them: ‘Call on those whom you assumed, to be gods, besides Him, such as the angels, Jesus and Ezra (‘Uzayr); yet they have no power to rid you of misfortune nor to transfer, it to ˹persons˺ other than you.
القرآن:١٧:٥٦

قُلِ ادْعُوا الَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِهِ فَلَا يَمْلِكُونَ كَشْفَ الضُّرِّ عَنْكُمْ وَلَا تَحْوِيلًا  

{قل} لهم {ادعوا الذين زعمتم} أنهم آلهة {من دونه} كالملائكة وعيسى وعزير {فلا يملكون كشف الضر عنكم ولا تحويلا} له إلى غيركم.
quran:17:57

Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord, ˹striving as to˺ which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.  

Those whom they call, gods, ˹they themselves˺ seek a means to their Lord, ˹they seek˺ nearness, by way of obedience, which of them (ayyuhum substitutes for the ˹third person indicator˺ wāw of ˹the verb˺ yabtaghūna, ‘they seek’) in other words, ˹even˺ he seeks it ˹this nearness˺ the one who, is nearer, to Him, so how ˹much more˺ is it ˹sought˺ in the case of others?; and they hope for His mercy and fear His chastisement, just like others, so how can you call them gods? Truly your Lord’s chastisement is a thing to beware of.
القرآن:١٧:٥٧

أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ يَبْتَغُونَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمُ الْوَسِيلَةَ أَيُّهُمْ أَقْرَبُ وَيَرْجُونَ رَحْمَتَهُ وَيَخَافُونَ عَذَابَهُ ۚ إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ كَانَ مَحْذُورًا  

{أولئك الذين يدعونـ} ـهم آلهة {يبتغون} يطلبون {إلى ربهم الوسيلة} القربة بالطاعة {أيهم} بدل من واو يبتغون أي يبتغيها الذي هو {أقرب} إليه فكيف بغيره {ويرجون رحمته ويخافون عذابه} كغيرهم فكيف تدعونهم آلهة {إن عذاب ربك كان محذوراً}.
quran:17:58

And there is no city but that We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register inscribed.  

There is not a town — its inhabitants are the ones meant — but We shall destroy it before the Day of Resurrection, through death, or chastise it with terrible chastisement, by killing ˹its inhabitants˺ or otherwise. That has been inscribed in the Book, the Preserved Tablet (al-lawh al-mahfūz).
القرآن:١٧:٥٨

وَإِنْ مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا نَحْنُ مُهْلِكُوهَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُوهَا عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا ۚ كَانَ ذَٰلِكَ فِي الْكِتَابِ مَسْطُورًا  

{وإن} ما {من قرية} أريد أهلها {إلا نحن مهلكوها قبل يوم القيامة} بالموت {أو معذبوها عذابا شديدا} بالقتل وغيره {كان ذلك في الكتاب} اللوح المحفوظ {مسطورا} مكتوبا.
quran:17:59

And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning.  

Nothing prevented Us from sending the signs, requested by the people of Mecca, except that the ancients denied them, when We sent such ˹signs˺ and so We destroyed them: if We were to send them to these ˹people of Mecca˺, they would deny them and would thus deserve destruction. However, We have judged that they be given respite so that the mission of Muhammad (s) be completed. And We gave Thamūd the she-camel as, a sign ˹that was˺, apparent, ˹one that was˺ clear and evident, but they wronged, they disbelieved, it, and were therefore destroyed. And We do not send signs, miracles, except for deterrence, to servants, so that they might believe.
القرآن:١٧:٥٩

وَمَا مَنَعَنَا أَنْ نُرْسِلَ بِالْآيَاتِ إِلَّا أَنْ كَذَّبَ بِهَا الْأَوَّلُونَ ۚ وَآتَيْنَا ثَمُودَ النَّاقَةَ مُبْصِرَةً فَظَلَمُوا بِهَا ۚ وَمَا نُرْسِلُ بِالْآيَاتِ إِلَّا تَخْوِيفًا  

{وما منعنا أن نرسل بالآيات} التي اقترحها أهل مكة {إلا أن كذب بها الأولون} لما أرسلناها فأهلكناهم ولو أرسلناها إلى هؤلاء لكذبوا بها واستحثوا الإهلاك وقد حكمنا بإمهالهم لإتمام أمر محمد ﷺ {وآتينا ثمود الناقة} أي {مبصرة} بينة واضحة {فظلموا} كفروا {بها} فأهلكوا {وما نرسل بالآيات} المعجزات {إلا تخويفا} للعباد فيؤمنوا.
quran:17:60

And ˹remember, O Muhammad˺, when We told you, "Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people." And We did not make the sight which We showed you except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree ˹mentioned˺ in the Qur'an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.  

And, remember, when We said to you, ‘Truly your Lord encompasses mankind’, in knowledge and power ˹over them˺, such that they are within His grasp: so deliver the Message to them and do not fear anyone, because God will protect you from them. And We did not appoint the vision that We showed you, before your very eyes, during the Night Journey, except as a test for people, ˹for˺ the people of Mecca — since they denied it and some of them ˹even˺ apostatised when he ˹the Prophet˺ informed them of it — and ˹likewise˺ the tree cursed in the Qur’ān, namely, the ˹tree called˺ Zaqqūm ˹Q.37:62ff˺ that issues from the very root of the Blazing Fire ˹of Hell˺; We made it a test for them, because they said, ‘Fire consumes trees, so how can it cause it ˹the Zaqqūm tree˺ to issue forth?’. And We ˹seek to˺ deter them, with it, but it, Our deterrence, only increases them in gross insolence.
القرآن:١٧:٦٠

وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لَكَ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ أَحَاطَ بِالنَّاسِ ۚ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا الرُّؤْيَا الَّتِي أَرَيْنَاكَ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِلنَّاسِ وَالشَّجَرَةَ الْمَلْعُونَةَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ ۚ وَنُخَوِّفُهُمْ فَمَا يَزِيدُهُمْ إِلَّا طُغْيَانًا كَبِيرًا  

{و} اذكر {إذ قلنا لك إن ربك أحاط بالناس} علما وقدرة فهم في قبضته فبلّغهم ولا تخف أحدا فهو يعصمك منهم {وما جعلنا الرؤيا التي أريناك} عيانا ليلة الإسراء {إلا فتنة للناس} أهل مكة إذ كذبوا بها وارتد بعضهم لما أخبرهم بها {والشجرة الملعونة في القرآن} هي الزقوم التي تنبت في أصل الجحيم جعلناها فتنة لهم إذ قالوا: النار تحرق الشجر فكيف تنبته {ونخوفهم} بها {فما يزيدهم} تخويفنا {إلا طغيانا كبيرا}.
quran:17:61

And ˹mention˺ when We said to the angles, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He said, "Should I prostrate to one You created from clay?"  

And, mention, when We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate yourselves before Adam’, a prostration of salutation, by inclining oneself, and so they ˹all˺ prostrated themselves, except Iblīs: he said, ‘Shall I prostrate myself before one whom You have created from clay?’ (tīnan, is in the accusative because the operator of the oblique ˹min, ‘of’˺ has been omitted, in other words ˹it would normally be˺ min tīnin).
القرآن:١٧:٦١

وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ قَالَ أَأَسْجُدُ لِمَنْ خَلَقْتَ طِينًا  

{و} اذكر {إذ قلنا للملائكة اسجدوا لآدم} سجود تحية بالانحناء {فسجدوا إلا إبليس قال أأسجد لمن خلقت طينا} نصب بنزع الخافض أي من طين.
quran:17:62

˹Iblees˺ said, "Do You see this one whom You have honored above me? If You delay me until the Day of Resurrection, I will surely destroy his descendants, except for a few."  

Said he, ‘Do You see — in other words, inform me: this one whom You have honoured, ˹whom˺ You have preferred, above me?, by commanding that prostration should be made before him, when ‘I am better than him. You created me from fire, while him You created from clay’ ˹Q. 7:12˺. If (la-in: the lām is for oaths) You defer me to the Day of Resurrection I shall verily eradicate his seed, by leading them astray, ˹all˺ save a few’, of them, of those whom You have given ˹divine˺ protection.
القرآن:١٧:٦٢

قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَكَ هَٰذَا الَّذِي كَرَّمْتَ عَلَيَّ لَئِنْ أَخَّرْتَنِ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ لَأَحْتَنِكَنَّ ذُرِّيَّتَهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا  

(قال أرأيتك) أي أخبرني (هذا الذي كرمت) فضلت (علي) بالأمر بالسجود له "" وأنا خير منه خلقتني من نار "" (لئن) لام قسم (أخرتن إلى يوم القيامة لأحتنكن) لأستأصلن (ذريته) بالإغواء (إلا قليلاً) منهم ممن عصمته.
quran:17:63

˹Allah˺ said, "Go, for whoever of them follows you, indeed Hell will be the recompense of you - an ample recompense.  

Said He, exalted be He, to him ˹Iblīs˺: ‘Begone, deferred to the time of the First Blast ˹of the Trumpet˺. Whoever of them follows you — indeed Hell shall be your requital, ˹both˺ yours and theirs, a requital ˹that is indeed˺ ample, sufficient and complete.
القرآن:١٧:٦٣

قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَمَنْ تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ جَزَاؤُكُمْ جَزَاءً مَوْفُورًا  

{قال} تعالى له {اذهب} منظرا إلى وقت النفخة الأولى {فمن تبعك منهم فإن جهنم جزاؤكم} أنت وهم {جزاءً موفورا} وافرا كاملاً.
quran:17:64

And incite ˹to senselessness˺ whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them." But Satan does not promise them except delusion.  

And tempt, dupe, whomever of them you can with your voice, by your calling them with songs and pipes and with every invitation to ˹acts of˺ disobedience; and rally, incite, against them your cavalry and your infantry, namely, those who ride and walk in acts of disobedience, and share with them in wealth, that is illicit, such as usury and extortion, and children, from ˹acts of˺ adultery, and make promises to them’, to the effect that there will not be any resurrection or requital. And Satan promises them, thereby, nothing but delusion, falsehood.
القرآن:١٧:٦٤

وَاسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ مِنْهُمْ بِصَوْتِكَ وَأَجْلِبْ عَلَيْهِمْ بِخَيْلِكَ وَرَجِلِكَ وَشَارِكْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَوْلَادِ وَعِدْهُمْ ۚ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا  

{واستفزز} استخف {من استطعت منهم بصوتك} بدعائك بالغناء والمزامير وكل داع إلى المعصية {وأجلب} صحْ {عليهم بخيلك ورجلك} وهم الركاب والمشاة في المعاصي {وشاركهم في الأموال} المحرمة كالربا والغصب {والأولاد} من الزنى {وعدهم} بأن لا بعث ولا جزاء {وما يعدهم الشيطان} بذلك {إلا غرورا} باطلاً.
quran:17:65

Indeed, over My ˹believing˺ servants there is for you no authority. And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs.  

‘Truly as for My servants, the believers, you shall have no warrant’, ˹no˺ sway or ability. And Your Lord suffices as a guardian, as a protector for them against you.
القرآن:١٧:٦٥

إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانٌ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِرَبِّكَ وَكِيلًا  

{إن عبادي} المؤمنين {ليس لك عليهم سلطان} تسلط وقوة {وكفى بربك وكيلا} حافظا لهم منك.
quran:17:66

It is your Lord who drives the ship for you through the sea that you may seek of His bounty. Indeed, He is ever, to you, Merciful.  

Your Lord is He Who drives for you the ships upon the sea that you may seek of His bounty, exalted be He, through ˹engaging in˺ commerce. Truly He is ever Merciful towards you, by disposing these ˹ships˺ for you.
القرآن:١٧:٦٦

رَبُّكُمُ الَّذِي يُزْجِي لَكُمُ الْفُلْكَ فِي الْبَحْرِ لِتَبْتَغُوا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيمًا  

{ربكم الذي يزجي} يجري {لكم الفلك} السفن {في البحر لتبتغوا} تطلبوا {من فضله} تعالى بالتجارة {إنه كان بكم رحيما} في تسخيرها لكم.
quran:17:67

And when adversity touches you at sea, lost are ˹all˺ those you invoke except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away ˹from Him˺. And ever is man ungrateful.  

And when distress, difficulty, befalls you at sea, ˹such as˺ fear of drowning, those whom you ˹are wont to˺ invoke are no longer present, ˹those whom˺ you ˹are wont to˺ worship of gods ˹are no longer present˺, and so you do not call on them — except Him, exalted be He, for on Him alone you do call, because you are suffering a distress which only He can remove. But when He delivers you, from drowning and brings you, to land, you are rejective, of ˹God’s˺ Oneness, for man is ever ungrateful, ˹ever˺ denying ˹God’s˺ graces.
القرآن:١٧:٦٧

وَإِذَا مَسَّكُمُ الضُّرُّ فِي الْبَحْرِ ضَلَّ مَنْ تَدْعُونَ إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ ۖ فَلَمَّا نَجَّاكُمْ إِلَى الْبَرِّ أَعْرَضْتُمْ ۚ وَكَانَ الْإِنْسَانُ كَفُورًا  

{وإذا مسكم الضر} الشدة {في البحر} خوف الغرق {ضل} غاب عنكم {من تدعون} تعبدون من الآلهة فلا تدعونه {إلا إياه} تعالى فإنكم تدعونه وحده لأنكم في شدة لا يكشفها إلا هو {فلما نجاكم} من الغرق وأوصلكم {إلى البر أعرضتم} عن التوحيد {وكان الإنسان كفورا} جحودا للنعم.
quran:17:68

Then do you feel secure that ˹instead˺ He will not cause a part of the land to swallow you or send against you a storm of stones? Then you would not find for yourselves an advocate.  

Do you feel secure that He will not cause a side of the earth, in other words, the land, to swallow you up, as ˹He did˺ with Korah (Qārūn), or unleash upon you a squall of pebbles? that is, hurl a shower of stones upon you, as ˹He did˺ with the people of Lot. Then you will not find for yourselves any guardian, any protector from Him.
القرآن:١٧:٦٨

أَفَأَمِنْتُمْ أَنْ يَخْسِفَ بِكُمْ جَانِبَ الْبَرِّ أَوْ يُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ حَاصِبًا ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوا لَكُمْ وَكِيلًا  

{أفأمنتم أن يخسف بكم جانب البر} أي الأرض كقارون {أو يرسل عليكم حاصبا} أي يرميكم بالحصباء كقوم لوط {ثم لا تجدوا لكم وكيلاً} حافظا منه.
quran:17:69

Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into the sea another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind and drown you for what you denied? Then you would not find for yourselves against Us an avenger.  

Or do you feel secure that He will not return you to it, that is, ˹to˺ the sea, a second time and unleash upon you a shattering gale, that is, a violent wind that shatters everything in its path, to destroy your ship, and drown you for your ungratefulness? And then you will not find for yourselves any redresser of this against Us, ˹any˺ helper or advocate to demand restitution from Us for what We ˹will˺ have done to you.
القرآن:١٧:٦٩

أَمْ أَمِنْتُمْ أَنْ يُعِيدَكُمْ فِيهِ تَارَةً أُخْرَىٰ فَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ قَاصِفًا مِنَ الرِّيحِ فَيُغْرِقَكُمْ بِمَا كَفَرْتُمْ ۙ ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوا لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ تَبِيعًا  

{أم أمنتم أن نعيدكم فيه} أي البحر {تارة} مرة {أخرى فنرسل عليكم قاصفا من الريح} أي ريحا شديدة لا تمر بشيء إلا قصفته فتكسر فلككم {فتغرقكم بما كفرتم} بكفركم {ثم لا تجدوا لكم علينا به تبيعا} ناصرا وتابعا يطالبنا بما فعلنا بكم.
quran:17:70

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with ˹definite˺ preference.  

And verily We have honoured, We have preferred, the Children of Adam, ˹above other creation˺, by ˹giving them˺ knowledge, speech and ˹their being˺ a creation of even proportions amongst other things, including their ˹means of˺ purification after death, and carried them over land, on animal-back, and sea, in ships, and provided them with good things and We have preferred them above many of those whom We created, such as livestock and wild animals, with a marked preferment (the min ˹of mimman, ‘of those whom’˺ has the sense of mā, ‘of what’, or something close to it, and includes the angels, the purpose being to give preference to the ˹angelic˺ genus; there is no requirement to give ˹explicit˺ preference to the individuals ˹of this category of being˺, since they ˹angels˺ are superior to mankind, excepting the prophets).
القرآن:١٧:٧٠

وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَمَ وَحَمَلْنَاهُمْ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ وَرَزَقْنَاهُمْ مِنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَفَضَّلْنَاهُمْ عَلَىٰ كَثِيرٍ مِمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا تَفْضِيلًا  

{ولقد كرمنا} فضلنا {بني آدم} بالعلم والنطق واعتدال الخلق وغير ذلك ومنه طهارتهم بعد الموت {وحملناهم في البر} على الدواب {والبحر} على السفن {ورزقناهم من الطيبات وفضلناهم على كثير ممن خلقنا} كالبهائم والوحوش {تفضيلاً} فمن بمعنى ما أو على بابها وتشمل الملائكة والمراد تفضيل الجنس، ولا يلزم تفضيل أفراده إذ هم أفضل من البشر غير الأنبياء.
quran:17:71

˹Mention, O Muhammad˺, the Day We will call forth every people with their record ˹of deeds˺. Then whoever is given his record in his right hand - those will read their records, and injustice will not be done to them, ˹even˺ as much as a thread ˹inside the date seed˺.  

Mention, the day when We shall summon all men with their leader, their prophet, and it will be said, ‘O community of so-and-so’; or ˹it bi-imāmihim means˺ ‘with the record of their deeds’, in which case it will be said, ‘O one of good ˹deeds˺, O one of evil ˹deeds˺!’: this is ˹on˺ the Day of Resurrection. And whoever, from among them, is given his book in his right hand, these being the fortunate, those possessors of understanding in this world — those will read their book, and they will not be wronged, they will ˹not˺ be diminished of their deeds, ˹so much as˺ a single date-thread.
القرآن:١٧:٧١

يَوْمَ نَدْعُو كُلَّ أُنَاسٍ بِإِمَامِهِمْ ۖ فَمَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ يَقْرَءُونَ كِتَابَهُمْ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا  

اذكر {يوم ندعو كل أناس بإمامهم} نبيهم فيقال يا أمة فلان أو بكتاب أعمالهم فيقال يا صاحب الشر وهو يوم القيامة {فمن أوتي} منهم {كتابه بيمينه} وهم السعداء أولو البصائر في الدنيا {فأولئك يقرءُون كتابهم ولا يُظلمون} ينقصون من أعمالهم {فتيلاً} قدر قشرة النواة.
quran:17:72

And whoever is blind in this ˹life˺ will be blind in the Hereafter and more astray in way.  

And whoever has been in this, that is, ˹in˺ this world, blind, to the truth, will be blind in the Hereafter, to the path of salvation and the reciting of the Qur’ān, and ˹even˺ further astray from the ˹right˺ way, more removed from the road ˹that leads˺ to it.
القرآن:١٧:٧٢

وَمَنْ كَانَ فِي هَٰذِهِ أَعْمَىٰ فَهُوَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ أَعْمَىٰ وَأَضَلُّ سَبِيلًا  

{ومن كان في هذه} أي الدنيا {أعمى} عن الحق {فهو في الآخرة أعمى} عن طريق النجاة وقراءة القرآن {وأضل سبيلاً} أبعد طريقا عنه. ونزل في ثقيف وقد سألوا ﷺ أن يحرم واديهم وألحوا عليه.
quran:17:73

And indeed, they were about to tempt you away from that which We revealed to you in order to ˹make˺ you invent about Us something else; and then they would have taken you as a friend.  

The following was revealed regarding the ˹tribe of˺ Thaqīf, for they had asked him ˹the Prophet˺ (s) to declare their valley inviolable and implored him ˹to grant them this request˺: And indeed (wa-in, ˹the particle in is˺ softened) they were about to, they nearly did, beguile you away from that which We revealed to you, so that you might invent against Us ˹something˺ other than that; and then, had you done that, they would have taken you as a friend.
القرآن:١٧:٧٣

وَإِنْ كَادُوا لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ عَنِ الَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَفْتَرِيَ عَلَيْنَا غَيْرَهُ ۖ وَإِذًا لَاتَّخَذُوكَ خَلِيلًا  

{وإن} مخففة {كادوا} قاربوا {ليفتنونك} ليستنزلون {عن الذي أوحينا إليك لتفتري علينا غيره وإذا} لو فعلت ذلك {لاتخذوك خليلاً}.
quran:17:74

And if We had not strengthened you, you would have almost inclined to them a little.  

And if We had not made you ˹stand˺ firm, upon the Truth, by way of ˹divine˺ protection (‘isma), certainly you might have, you nearly, inclined to them a little, because of the extent of their deception and their persistence. This ˹statement˺ is explicit about the fact that the Prophet (s) neither inclined nor came close to doing so.
القرآن:١٧:٧٤

وَلَوْلَا أَنْ ثَبَّتْنَاكَ لَقَدْ كِدْتَ تَرْكَنُ إِلَيْهِمْ شَيْئًا قَلِيلًا  

{ولولا أن ثبتناك} على الحق بالعصمة {لقد كدت} قاربت {تركن} تميل {إليهم شيئا} ركونا {قليلاً} لشدة احتيالهم وإلحاحهم، وهو صريح في أنه ﷺ لم يركن ولا قارب.
quran:17:75

Then ˹if you had˺, We would have made you taste double ˹punishment in˺ life and double ˹after˺ death. Then you would not find for yourself against Us a helper.  

Then, had you inclined, We would have surely made you taste a double, chastisement, in life and a double, chastisement, upon death, in other words, twice the chastisement that any other person would receive in this world and the Hereafter. Then you would not have found for yourself any helper against Us, ˹anyone˺ to shield ˹you˺ from it.
القرآن:١٧:٧٥

إِذًا لَأَذَقْنَاكَ ضِعْفَ الْحَيَاةِ وَضِعْفَ الْمَمَاتِ ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُ لَكَ عَلَيْنَا نَصِيرًا  

{إذاً} لو ركنت {لأذقناك ضعف} عذاب {الحياة وضعف} عذاب {الممات} أي مثلي ما يعذب غيرك في الدنيا والآخرة {ثم لا تجد لك علينا نصيرا} مانعا منه.
quran:17:76

And indeed, they were about to drive you from the land to evict you therefrom. And then ˹when they do˺, they will not remain ˹there˺ after you, except for a little.  

When the Jews said to him, ‘If you are a prophet, then make your way to Syria, for it is the land of prophets’, the following was revealed: And indeed (wa-in, ˹the particle in is˺ softened) they were about to provoke you out of the land, the land of Medina, to expel you from it, but then, had they expelled you, they would not have remained after you, in it, except a little ˹while˺, after which they would have been destroyed.
القرآن:١٧:٧٦

وَإِنْ كَادُوا لَيَسْتَفِزُّونَكَ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ لِيُخْرِجُوكَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَإِذًا لَا يَلْبَثُونَ خِلَافَكَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا  

ونزل لما قال له اليهود: إن كنت نبيا فالحق بالشام فإنها أرض الأنبياء {وإن} مخففة {كادوا ليستفزونك من الأرض} أرض المدينة {ليخرجوك منها وإذا} لو أخرجوك {لا يلبثون خلافك} فيها {إلا قليلاً} ثم يهلكون.
quran:17:77

˹That is Our˺ established way for those We had sent before you of Our messengers; and you will not find in Our way any alteration.  

˹That is˺ the way in the case of those whom We have sent from among Our messengers before you, that is to say, ˹that is˺ Our way ˹of dealing˺ with them ˹their enemies˺, destroying those who expel them ˹Our messengers˺. And as regards Our ˹established˺ way you will not find any change, any alternative ˹manner˺.
القرآن:١٧:٧٧

سُنَّةَ مَنْ قَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ مِنْ رُسُلِنَا ۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ لِسُنَّتِنَا تَحْوِيلًا  

{سنّة من قد أرسلنا قبلك من رسلنا} أي كسنتنا فيهم من إهلاك من أخرجهم {ولا تجد لسنتنا تحويلاً} تبديلاً.
quran:17:78

Establish prayer at the decline of the sun ˹from its meridian˺ until the darkness of the night and ˹also˺ the Qur'an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.  

Establish prayer from the sun’s decline, that is, from after midday, until the dark of night, ˹until˺ its darkness has fallen, in other words, ˹perform prayers˺ at noon, in the afternoon, at sunset and at night, and the recital ˹of the Qur’ān˺ at dawn, the morning prayer. Verily the dawn recital is ever witnessed, it is witnessed by the angels of the night and the angels of the day.
القرآن:١٧:٧٨

أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَىٰ غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ ۖ إِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا  

{أقم الصلاة لدلوك الشمس} أي من وقت زوالها {إلى غسق الليل} إقبال ظلمته أي الظهر والعصر والمغرب والعشاء {وقرآن الفجر} صلاة الصبح {إن قرآن الفجر كان مشهودا} تشهده ملائكة الليل وملائكة النهار.
quran:17:79

And from ˹part of˺ the night, pray with it as additional ˹worship˺ for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.  

And for a part of the night, keep vigil, perform prayer, therewith, with the Qur’ān, as a supererogatory ˹devotion˺ for you, as an extra obligation for you to the exclusion of your community, or ˹it means˺ as extra merit ˹for you˺ on top of the ˹other˺ obligatory prayers. It may be that your Lord will raise you to, establish you, in the Hereafter, in, a praiseworthy station, one for which the first and last ˹of mankind˺ will praise you — and this is the station of intercession ˹which will take place˺ during ˹the passing of˺ the Final Judgement.
القرآن:١٧:٧٩

وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَكَ عَسَىٰ أَنْ يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا  

{ومن الليل فتهجد} فصلِّ {به} بالقرآن {نافلة لك} فريضة زائدة لك دون أمتك أو فضيلة على الصلوات المفروضة {عسى أن يبعثك} يقيمك {ربك} في الآخرة {مقاما محمودا} يحمدك فيه الأولون والآخرون وهو مقام الشفاعة في فصل القضاء، ونزل لما أمر بالهجرة.
quran:17:80

And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority."  

And say: ‘My Lord, make me enter, Medina, with a veritable entrance, an entrance that is satisfying, one in which I do not see what I dislike, and bring me out, of Mecca, with a veritable departure, a departure such that my heart will not ˹care to˺ turn back to look at it ˹yearningly˺. And grant me from Yourself a favourable authority’, ˹grant me˺ strength with which You render me victorious over Your enemies.
القرآن:١٧:٨٠

وَقُلْ رَبِّ أَدْخِلْنِي مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ وَأَخْرِجْنِي مُخْرَجَ صِدْقٍ وَاجْعَلْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ سُلْطَانًا نَصِيرًا  

{وقل ربِّ أدخلني} المدينة {مُدخل صدق} إدخالاً مرضيا لا أرى فيه ما أكره {وأخرجني} من مكة {مُخرج صدق} إخراجا لا ألتفت بقلبي إليها {واجعل لي من لدنك سلطانا نصيرا} قوة تنصرني بها على أعدائك.
quran:17:81

And say, "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, ˹by nature˺, ever bound to depart."  

And say, upon your entry into Mecca: ‘The Truth, Islam, has come and falsehood has vanished away, disbelief has come to nothing. Truly falsehood is ever bound to vanish’, ˹ever bound˺ to fade away and disappear. Indeed the Prophet (s) entered it ˹Mecca˺ and there were 360 idols ˹which had been placed˺ around the ˹Sacred˺ House ˹sc. the Ka‘ba˺. He ˹the Prophet˺ then set about thrusting at them with a stick he was carrying, saying those ˹words˺ until they had ˹all˺ been toppled, as reported by the two Shaykhs ˹Bukhārī and Muslim˺.
القرآن:١٧:٨١

وَقُلْ جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ ۚ إِنَّ الْبَاطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقًا  

(وقل) عند دخولك مكة (جاء الحق) الإسلام (وزهق الباطل) بطل الكفر (إن الباطل كان زهوقا) مضمحلاً زائلاً "" وقد دخلها ﷺ وحول البيت ثلاثمائة وستون صنما فجعل يطعنها بعود في يده ويقول ذلك حتى سقطت "" رواه الشيخان.
quran:17:82

And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.  

And We reveal of (min ˹here˺ is explicative) the Qur’ān that which is a cure, from error, and a mercy for believers, thereby; though it only increases the evildoers, the disbelievers, in loss, because of their disbelief in it.
القرآن:١٧:٨٢

وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۙ وَلَا يَزِيدُ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا خَسَارًا  

{وننزل من} للبيان {القرآن ما هو شفاء} من الضلالة {ورحمة للمؤمنين} به {ولا يزيد الظالمين} الكافرين {إلا خسارا} لكفرهم به.
quran:17:83

And when We bestow favor upon the disbeliever, he turns away and distances himself; and when evil touches him, he is ever despairing.  

And when We are gracious to man, the disbelieving ˹man˺, he is disregardful, of giving thanks, and turns aside, turning his face away in arrogance; but when an ill, such as poverty or hardship, befalls him, he is in despair, despondent of God’s mercy.
القرآن:١٧:٨٣

وَإِذَا أَنْعَمْنَا عَلَى الْإِنْسَانِ أَعْرَضَ وَنَأَىٰ بِجَانِبِهِ ۖ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ كَانَ يَئُوسًا  

{وإذا أنعمنا على الإنسان} الكافر {أعرض} عن الشكر {ونأى بجانبه} ثنى عطفه متبخترا {وإذا مسه الشر} الفقر والشدة {كان يؤوسا} قنوطا من رحمة الله.
quran:17:84

Say, "Each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in way."  

Say: ‘Everyone, ˹including˺ us and you, acts according to his ˹own˺ character, his ˹own˺ manner ˹of conduct˺, and your Lord knows best who is better guided as to the way’, ˹as to˺ the path ˹he follows˺, and He will reward him ˹accordingly˺.
القرآن:١٧:٨٤

قُلْ كُلٌّ يَعْمَلُ عَلَىٰ شَاكِلَتِهِ فَرَبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ هُوَ أَهْدَىٰ سَبِيلًا  

{قل كل} منا ومنكم {يعمل على شاكلته} طريقته {فربكم أعلم بمن هو أهدى سبيلاً} طريقا فيثيبه.
quran:17:85

And they ask you, ˹O Muhammad˺, about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little."  

And they will question you, that is, the Jews, concerning the Spirit, from which the body receives life. Say, to them: ‘The Spirit is of the command of my Lord, that is, ˹it belongs to˺ His knowledge, about which you know not. And of knowledge you have not been given except a little’, relative to His knowledge, exalted be He.
القرآن:١٧:٨٥

وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ ۖ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا  

{ويسألونك} أي اليهود {عن الروح} الذي يحيا به البدن {قل} لهم {الروح من أمر ربي} أي علمه لا تعلمونه {وما أويتم من العلم إلا قليلاً} بالنسبة إلى علمه تعالى.
quran:17:86

And if We willed, We could surely do away with that which We revealed to you. Then you would not find for yourself concerning it an advocate against Us.  

And if (la-in, the lām is for oaths) We willed We could take away what We have revealed to you, in other words, ˹take away˺ the Qur’ān, by erasing it from the hearts ˹of men˺ and from the written copies. Then you would not find in respect thereof any guardian for yourself against Us;
القرآن:١٧:٨٦

وَلَئِنْ شِئْنَا لَنَذْهَبَنَّ بِالَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُ لَكَ بِهِ عَلَيْنَا وَكِيلًا  

{ولئن} لام قسم {شئنا لنذهبن بالذي أوحينا إليك} أي القرآن بأن نمحوه من الصدور والمصاحف {ثم لا تجد لك به علينا وكيلاً}.
quran:17:87

Except ˹We have left it with you˺ as a mercy from your Lord. Indeed, His favor upon you has ever been great.  

˹it is˺ only — but We have let it remain — as a mercy from your Lord. Truly His favour to you is ever great, tremendous, for He has revealed to you and granted you the praiseworthy station as well as other ˹kinds of˺ merit.
القرآن:١٧:٨٧

إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِنْ رَبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّ فَضْلَهُ كَانَ عَلَيْكَ كَبِيرًا  

{إلا} لكن أبقيناه {رحمة من ربك إن فضله كان عليك كبيرا} عظيما حيث أنزله عليك وأعطاك المقام المحمود وغير ذلك من الفضائل.
quran:17:88

Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants."  

Say: ‘Verily, should mankind and jinn come together to produce the like of this Qur’ān, ˹the like thereof˺ in terms of clarity and rhetorical excellence, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed one another’, ˹even if one was˺ an assistant ˹of the other˺. This ˹verse˺ was revealed as a refutation of their statement: ‘If we wish we can speak the like of this’ ˹Q. 8:31˺.
القرآن:١٧:٨٨

قُلْ لَئِنِ اجْتَمَعَتِ الْإِنْسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَىٰ أَنْ يَأْتُوا بِمِثْلِ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنِ لَا يَأْتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِ وَلَوْ كَانَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ ظَهِيرًا  

(قل لئن اجتمعت الإنس والجن على أن يأتوا بمثل هذا القرآن) في الفصاحة والبلاغة. (لا يأتون بمثله ولو كان بعضهم لبعض ظهيرا) معينا نزل ردا لقولهم "" ولو نشاء لقلنا مثل هذا "".
quran:17:89

And We have certainly diversified for the people in this Qur'an from every ˹kind˺ of example, but most of the people refused ˹anything˺ except disbelief.  

And verily We have dispensed, explained, for people in this Qur’ān every ˹kind of˺ similitude (min kulli mathalin, ˹this˺ is an adjectival qualification of an omitted clause, in other words, ˹‘We have dispensed˺ a similitude from every kind of similitude’), that they might be admonished; but most people, that is, the people of Mecca, insist on disbelieving, on denying the truth.
القرآن:١٧:٨٩

وَلَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا لِلنَّاسِ فِي هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنِ مِنْ كُلِّ مَثَلٍ فَأَبَىٰ أَكْثَرُ النَّاسِ إِلَّا كُفُورًا  

{ولقد صرفنا} بينا {للناس في هذا القرآن من كل مثل} صفة لمحذوف أي مثلاً من جنس كل مثل ليتعظوا {فأبى أكثر الناس} أي أهل مكة {إلا كفورا} جحودا للحق.
quran:17:90

And they say, "We will not believe you until you break open for us from the ground a spring.  

And they say (wa-qālū is a supplement to abā ˹illā˺, ‘insist on’), ‘We will not believe you until you make gush forth for us from the ground a spring, from which water issues forth;
القرآن:١٧:٩٠

وَقَالُوا لَنْ نُؤْمِنَ لَكَ حَتَّىٰ تَفْجُرَ لَنَا مِنَ الْأَرْضِ يَنْبُوعًا  

{وقالوا} عطف على أبى {لن نؤمن لك حتى تفجر لنا من الأرض ينبوعا} عينا ينبع منها الماء.
quran:17:91

Or ˹until˺ you have a garden of palm tress and grapes and make rivers gush forth within them in force ˹and abundance˺  

or until you ˹come to˺ have a garden, an orchard, of date-palms and vines, and cause streams to gush forth therein, in the midst of these, abundantly;
القرآن:١٧:٩١

أَوْ تَكُونَ لَكَ جَنَّةٌ مِنْ نَخِيلٍ وَعِنَبٍ فَتُفَجِّرَ الْأَنْهَارَ خِلَالَهَا تَفْجِيرًا  

{أو تكون لك جنة} بستان {من نخيل وعنب فتفجر الأنهار خلالها} وسطها {تفجيرا}.
quran:17:92

Or you make the heaven fall upon us in fragments as you have claimed or you bring Allah and the angels before ˹us˺  

or until you cause the heaven to fall upon us, as you assert, in pieces, or bring God and the angels ˹right˺ in front ˹of us˺, face to face ˹with us˺, before ˹our˺ very eyes, so that we might see them;
القرآن:١٧:٩٢

أَوْ تُسْقِطَ السَّمَاءَ كَمَا زَعَمْتَ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا أَوْ تَأْتِيَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ قَبِيلًا  

{أو تسقط السماء كما زعمت علينا كسفا} قطعا {أو تأتي بالله والملائكة قبيلاً} مقابلة وعيانا فنراهم.
quran:17:93

Or you have a house of gold or you ascend into the sky. And ˹even then˺, we will not believe in your ascension until you bring down to us a book we may read." Say, "Exalted is my Lord! Was I ever but a human messenger?"  

or until you ˹come to˺ have a house adorned with gold, or ascend into the heaven, upon a ladder, and ˹even then˺ we will not believe your ascension, if you were to ascend into it, until you bring down for us, therefrom, a book, in which is ˹confirmed˺ your truthfulness, that we may read’. Say, to them: ‘Glory be to my Lord — this is a statement of amazement — Am I anything but a human, a messenger ˹from God˺?’, in other words, ˹I am˺ like all ˹other˺ messengers, for they never brought ˹any˺ signs except by God’s leave.
القرآن:١٧:٩٣

أَوْ يَكُونَ لَكَ بَيْتٌ مِنْ زُخْرُفٍ أَوْ تَرْقَىٰ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَلَنْ نُؤْمِنَ لِرُقِيِّكَ حَتَّىٰ تُنَزِّلَ عَلَيْنَا كِتَابًا نَقْرَؤُهُ ۗ قُلْ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّي هَلْ كُنْتُ إِلَّا بَشَرًا رَسُولًا  

{أو يكون لك بيت من زخرف} ذهب {أو ترقى} تصعد {في السماء} بسُلَّم {ولن نؤمن لرقيك} لو رقيت فيها {حتى تنزل علينا} منها {كتابا} فيه تصديقك {نقرؤه قل} لهم {سبحان ربي} تعجب {هل} ما {كنت إلا بشرا رسولاً} كسائر الرسل ولم يكونوا يأتون بآية إلا بإذن الله.
quran:17:94

And what prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them except that they said, "Has Allah sent a human messenger?"  

And nothing prevented mankind from believing when guidance came to them, but that they said, that is, ˹except˺ their saying in denial: ‘Has God sent a human as a messenger ˹from Him˺?’, instead of sending an angel.
القرآن:١٧:٩٤

وَمَا مَنَعَ النَّاسَ أَنْ يُؤْمِنُوا إِذْ جَاءَهُمُ الْهُدَىٰ إِلَّا أَنْ قَالُوا أَبَعَثَ اللَّهُ بَشَرًا رَسُولًا  

{وما منع الناس أن يؤمنوا إذ جاءهم الهدى إلا أن قالوا} أي قولهم منكرين {أبعث الله بشرا رسولاً} ولم يبعث ملكا.
quran:17:95

Say, "If there were upon the earth angels walking securely, We would have sent down to them from the heaven an angel ˹as a˺ messenger."  

Say, to them: ‘Had there been in the earth, instead of humans, angels, walking ˹and living˺ secure, We would have sent down to them from the heaven an angel as Messenger’, for when a messenger is sent to a people he is ˹always˺ of their kind, so that they are able to speak to him and understand from him ˹his message˺.
القرآن:١٧:٩٥

قُلْ لَوْ كَانَ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَلَائِكَةٌ يَمْشُونَ مُطْمَئِنِّينَ لَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَلَكًا رَسُولًا  

{قل} لهم {لو كان في الأرض} بدل البشر {ملائكة يمشون مطمئنين لنزّلنا عليهم من السماء ملكا رسولاً} إذ لا يرسل إلى قوم رسول إلا من جنسهم ليمكنهم مخاطبته والفهم عنه.
quran:17:96

Say, "Sufficient is Allah as Witness between me and you. Indeed he is ever, concerning His servants, Acquainted and Seeing."  

Say: ‘God suffices as a witness between me and you, of my sincerity. Truly He is Aware, Seer of His servants’, Knower of what they hide and what they manifest.
القرآن:١٧:٩٦

قُلْ كَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ شَهِيدًا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِعِبَادِهِ خَبِيرًا بَصِيرًا  

{قل كفى بالله شهيدا بيني وبينكم} على صدقي {إنه كان بعباده خبيرا بصيرا} عالما ببواطنهم وظواهرهم.
quran:17:97

And whoever Allah guides - he is the ˹rightly˺ guided; and whoever He sends astray - you will never find for them protectors besides Him, and We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection ˹fallen˺ on their faces - blind, dumb and deaf. Their refuge is Hell; every time it subsides We increase them in blazing fire.  

And he whom God guides is rightly guided, and he whom He sends astray — you will not find for them ˹any˺ guardians, to guide them, besides Him. And We shall assemble them on the Day of Resurrection, walking, on their faces, blind, dumb, and deaf; their abode shall be Hell — whenever it abates, ˹whenever˺ its flames subside, We shall intensify for them the blaze, the flame and ˹its˺ burning.
القرآن:١٧:٩٧

وَمَنْ يَهْدِ اللَّهُ فَهُوَ الْمُهْتَدِ ۖ وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لَهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِنْ دُونِهِ ۖ وَنَحْشُرُهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ عُمْيًا وَبُكْمًا وَصُمًّا ۖ مَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ كُلَّمَا خَبَتْ زِدْنَاهُمْ سَعِيرًا  

{ومن يهد اللهُ فهو المهتد ومن يضلل فلن تجد لهم أولياء} يهدونهم {من دونه ونحشرهم يوم القيامة} ماشين {على وجوههم عميا وبكما وصمّا مأواهم جهنم كلما خبت} سكن لهبها {زدناهم سعيرا} تلهبا واشتعالاً.
quran:17:98

That is their recompense because they disbelieved in Our verses and said, "When we are bones and crumbled particles, will we ˹truly˺ be resurrected ˹in˺ a new creation?"  

That is their requital because they disbelieved Our signs and said, in denial of the Resurrection: ‘What, when we are bones and fragments, shall we really be raised in a new creation?’
القرآن:١٧:٩٨

ذَٰلِكَ جَزَاؤُهُمْ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا وَقَالُوا أَإِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا وَرُفَاتًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ خَلْقًا جَدِيدًا  

{ذلك جزاؤهم بأنهم كفروا بآياتنا وقالوا} منكرين للبعث {أئذا كنا عظاما ورفاتا أئنا لمبعوثون خلقا جديدا}.
quran:17:99

Do they not see that Allah, who created the heavens and earth, is ˹the one˺ Able to create the likes of them? And He has appointed for them a term, about which there is no doubt. But the wrongdoers refuse ˹anything˺ except disbelief.  

Have they not seen, realised, that God, ˹He˺ Who created the heavens and the earth, with all their immensity, has the power to create the like of them?, that is, ˹the like of˺ these human beings, ˹especially˺ given their smallness? He has appointed for them a term, until ˹the time for their˺ death and resurrection, whereof is no doubt; yet the wrongdoers insist on disbelief, on denial of such ˹a term˺.
القرآن:١٧:٩٩

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ قَادِرٌ عَلَىٰ أَنْ يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُمْ وَجَعَلَ لَهُمْ أَجَلًا لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ فَأَبَى الظَّالِمُونَ إِلَّا كُفُورًا  

{أولم يرَوْا} يعلموا {أن الله الذي خلق السماوات والأرض} مع عظمهما {قادر على أن يخلق مثلهم} أي الأناسي في الصغر {وجعل لهم أجلاً} للموت والبعث {لا ريب فيه فأبى الظالمون إلا كفورا} جحودا له.
quran:17:100

Say ˹to them˺, "If you possessed the depositories of the mercy of my Lord, then you would withhold out of fear of spending." And ever has man been stingy.  

Say, to them: ‘If you possessed the treasuries of my Lord’s mercy, ˹those treasuries˺ of provision and rain, you would surely withhold ˹them˺, ˹you would˺ stint, for fear of spending, fearing that they would be depleted if ˹one˺ spent ˹from them˺ and ˹that˺ you would then become impoverished; and man is ever niggardly’.
القرآن:١٧:١٠٠

قُلْ لَوْ أَنْتُمْ تَمْلِكُونَ خَزَائِنَ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّي إِذًا لَأَمْسَكْتُمْ خَشْيَةَ الْإِنْفَاقِ ۚ وَكَانَ الْإِنْسَانُ قَتُورًا  

{قل} لهم {لو أنتم تملكون خزائن رحمة ربي} من الرزق والمطر {إذا لأمسكتم} لبخلتم {خشية الإنفاق} خوف نفادها بالإنفاق فتقتروا {وكان الإنسان قتورا} بخيلاً.
