كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فَنَزَلْنَا بِغَدِيرِ خُمٍّ فَنُودِيَ فِينَا الصَّلَاةُ جَامِعَةٌ وَكُسِحَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ تَحْتَ شَجَرَتَيْنِ فَصَلَّى الظُّهْرَ وَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ أَلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ أَلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي أَوْلَى بِكُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ مَنْ كُنْتُ مَوْلَاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَوْلَاهُ اللهُمَّ وَالِ مَنْ وَالَاهُ وَعَادِ مَنْ عَادَاهُ قَالَ فَلَقِيَهُ عُمَرُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَهُ هَنِيئًا يَا ابْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَصْبَحْتَ وَأَمْسَيْتَ مَوْلَى كُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ وَمُؤْمِنَةٍ
"I entered upon 'Abdullah bin 'Ukaim Abu Mabad Al-Juhani to visit him, while he had Humrah. I said:'Why don't you hang something?' He said: 'Death is better than that. سَأَلْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ خَتَنًا لِي حَدَّثَنِي عَنْكَ بِحَدِيثٍ فِي شَأْنِ عَلِيٍّ يَوْمَ غَدِيرِ خُمٍّ فَأَنَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْمَعَهُ مِنْكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّكُمْ مَعْشَرَ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ فِيكُمْ مَا فِيكُمْ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ مِنِّي بَأْسٌ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ كُنَّا بِالْجُحْفَةِ فَخَرْجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَيْنَا ظُهْرًا وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِعَضُدِ عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ فَمَنْ كُنْتُ مَوْلَاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَوْلَاهُ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ هَلْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ وَالِ مَنْ وَالَاهُ وَعَادِ مَنْ عَادَاهُ؟ قَالَ إِنَّمَا أُخْبِرُكَ كَمَا سَمِعْتُ
[AI] I remember when we camped with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a valley called Wadi Khumm. He commanded us to perform the prayer, so we prayed with him using a sand mound as a place of prostration. Then he delivered a sermon to us while being shaded by a garment on a samurah tree from the sun. He asked us, "Do you not know, and do you not bear witness, that I am closer to every believer than his own self?" We replied, "Yes, indeed." He said, "Whoever I am his master, then Ali is his master. O Allah, be a friend to those who befriend him and an enemy to those who oppose him."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Am I not more worthy of the believers than themselves?" They said, "Indeed, you are." He said, "Whoever I am his Mawla (master), then 'Ali is his Mawla." Ma'mun narrated that some people reported to him from Zaid that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, be a supporter to the one who supports him (Ali) and be an enemy to the one who opposes him."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ جَارِيَةٌ فَأَعْتَقَهَا وَتَزَوَّجَهَا كَانَ لَهُ أَجْرَانِ

[AI] "I participated in a campaign with Ali in Yemen, and I witnessed arrogance from him. When I arrived in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I mentioned Ali and belittled him. I then saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ change, and he said, 'O Buraydah, am I not more deserving of the believers' loyalty than themselves?' I replied, 'Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Whoever I am his master, Ali is also his master.'"
غَزَوْتُ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ الْيَمَنَ فَرَأَيْتُ مِنْهُ جَفْوَةً فَلَمَّا قَدِمْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذَكَرْتُ عَلِيًّا فَتَنَقَّصْتُهُ فَرَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَغَيَّرُ فَقَالَ يَا بُرَيْدَةُ أَلَسْتُ أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ مَنْ كُنْتُ مَوْلَاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَوْلَاهُ
[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever I am his guardian, Ali is his guardian."

جَاءَ رَهْطٌ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ بالرَّحْبَةِ فَقَالُوا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مَوْلَانَا قَالَ كَيْفَ أَكُونُ مَوْلَاكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ قَوْمٌ عَرَبٌ؟ قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ غَدِيرِ خُمٍّ يَقُولُ مَنْ كُنْتُ مَوْلَاهُ فَإِنَّ هَذَا مَوْلَاهُ قَالَ رِيَاحٌ فَلَمَّا مَضَوْا تَبِعْتُهُمْ فَسَأَلْتُ مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ؟ قَالُوا نَفَرٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فِيهِمْ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ
The Messenger of Allah wiped over his leather socks and his head cover (i.e., over the Imamah). (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 561)
