9. Book of Ṣalāh (1/30)
A man said to him: "Why don't you go out and fight?" He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say: 'Islam is built on five (pillars): Testimony that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, establishing Salah, giving Zakah, Hajj, and fasting Ramadan.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5001)
9.2 [Machine] The obligation of prayer.
"A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, how many prayers has Allah enjoined upon His slaves?' He said: 'Allah has enjoined upon His slaves (five) prayers.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, is there anything before them or after them?' He said: 'Allah has enjoined upon His salves (five) prayers.' The man swore that he would not do anything more or less than that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'If he is speaking the truth he will most certainly enter Paradise.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 459)
[Machine] Narrated to us Al-Qa'nabi from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz once delayed the prayer in his leadership. Urwah ibn Zubair entered upon him and informed him that Mu'ghirah ibn Shu'bah also delayed the prayer while he was in Kufa. Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari then entered upon him and said, "O Mu'ghirah, what is this? Did you not know that Gabrielﷺ descended and performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer?" Then he said, "By this I was commanded." Abu Mas'ud said, "I know what you are talking about, O Urwah. Or indeed, Gabriel established the prayer for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the time of prayer." He said, "That was how Bashir ibn Abi Mas'ud used to narrate from his father."
that he said to ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar: "Indeed, we find the prayer of the resident and the prayer of fear in the Quran, but we do not find the prayer of travel in the Quran?" So ʿAbdullāh said to him: "O son of my brother, indeed Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ to us and we do not know anything, so we only do as we have seen him do."
"We were with Sa'eed bin Al-'Asi in Tabaristan, and Hudhaifah bin Al-Yaman was with us. He said: 'Which of you offered the fear prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' Hudhaifah said: 'I did.' So Hudhaifah stood and the people formed two rows behind him, one row behind him and one row facing the enemy. He led those who were behind him in praying one rak'ah, then they went and took the place of the others, and the others came and he led them in praying one rak'ah, and they did not make it up." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1530)
9.2.1 Subsection
He was sitting on the cushions of 'Umar bin 'Abdul-'Aziz when he was the leader over Al-Madinah, and with him was 'Urwah bin Zubair. "umar delayed 'Asr somewhat, and 'Urwah said to him: "Jibril came down and led the Messenger of Allah in prayer." 'Umar said to him: "Know what you are saying, O 'Urwah!" he said: "I heard Bashir bin Abu Mas'ud saying, 'I heard Abu Mas'ud saying, "I heard the Messenger of Allah saying, 'Jibril came down and led me in prayer, and I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him,' and he counted five prayers on his fingers." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 668)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Jibreel (Gabriel) came down and informed me of the prayer time, so I prayed with him. Then I prayed with him again, and again, and again, and again." He counted with his fingers five prayers. "And I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying the Dhuhr (noon) prayer when the sun passes its zenith, and sometimes he would delay it until the heat becomes intense. And I saw him praying the Asr (afternoon) prayer when the sun is still high and white before it turns yellow. Then a man would finish his prayer and come to Dhul-Hulayfah (a place) before the sunset and pray the Maghrib (evening) prayer when the sun sets. And he would pray the Isha (night) prayer when the horizon becomes dark, and sometimes he would delay it until people gather. And he would pray the Fajr (dawn) prayer once with twilight and then again with the full light, and thereafter he would pray it with full light until he passed away. He did not miss praying with full light again."
9.3 [Machine] Warning against abandoning prayer
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There is nothing between a person and disbelief except abandoning Salah.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 464)
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1079)
[Machine] This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to act when he was surprised by a journey or an expedient matter.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to combine two prayers on a journey, he delayed the noon prayer till came the early time of the afternoon prayer, and then combined the two. (Using translation from Muslim 704b)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ordered a dome made of hair, but it was struck by lightning. So the Messenger of Allah proceeded, and the Quraysh had no doubts that he was standing at the sacred place of Muzdalifah, just as the Quraysh used to do during the period of ignorance. The Messenger of Allah continued until he reached Arafat, where he found the dome had been struck by lightning. He alighted from his ride and stayed there until the sun started to decline. Then he ordered for the shearing of his hair, and it was shaved for him. He then came to the bottom of the valley and addressed the people, saying, "Verily, your lives and wealth are sacred to you like the sacredness of this day and month in this land. Behold! Every matter pertaining to the period of ignorance is under my feet. The blood money of the period of ignorance is abolished and the first blood money I abolish is that belonging to the son of Rabi'ah bin Al-Harith who was suckled among Banu Laith and killed by Hudhail. Beware of Allah regarding the women, for you have taken them under the security of Allah and intercourse with them has become lawful to you by the words of Allah. And upon them is your obligation that they must not allow anyone whom you dislike to enter your houses. But if they do that, then chastise them with a non-injurious chastisement. On them is the provision and clothing according to what is reasonable. I have left among you that which will never lead you astray, the Book of Allah, and you will be asked about me. What will you say?" They replied, "We bear witness that you have conveyed and fulfilled the trusts." He then raised his index finger towards the sky and passed it over the people, saying thrice, "O Allah, bear witness!" Then he called for the Adhan and Iqamah and observed the prayer of Dhuhr, and then he observed the prayer of Asr, without observing any nafl prayer in between them.

The Prophet ﷺ was engaged in the Battle of Tabuk. If he moved off before the sun had declined, he would delay the noon prayer till he would combine it with the afternoon prayer and would offer them together. If he moved off after the sun had declined, he would combine the noon and afternoon prayers, and then he proceeded; if he moved off before the evening prayer, he would delay the evening prayer; he would offer it along with the night prayer, he would delay the evening prayer; he would offer it along with the night prayer. If he moved off after the evening prayer, he would offer the night prayer earlier and offer it along with the evening prayer. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has not been narrated by anyone except by Qutaibah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1220)

[Machine] We got married with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night and we did not wake up until the sun called us. Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "Let every man among you take his mount and move away from this place." Then he called for water and performed ablution, then he prostrated twice, and then the prayer was established.

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There is no negligence when one sleeps, rather negligence is when one does not offer one prayer until the time of the next prayer comes and he realizes that he has missed a prayer.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 616)

[Machine] We traveled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and when it was late at night, we became tired. Our eyes became heavy, and we were only awakened by the heat of the sun. A man stood up to relieve himself, astonished. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded them to perform ablution, and then he instructed Bilal to call the Adhan. They prayed the two Rak'ahs of Fajr, and then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and led them in offering the Fajr prayer. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, did we miss it? Shall we make it up at its proper time tomorrow?" He replied, "Does your Lord prevent you from repaying a debt and accept it from you? Rather, losing sleep is what is meant."

[Machine] On the day when the parties left, Allah's Messenger ﷺ called out among them: "Behold, nobody among you should offer the Zhuhr prayer but at Banu Qurayzah." Some people, therefore, remained behind and feared missing the prayer time, so they performed the prayer. Others said we will only pray where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us and if the prayer time is missed, Allah's Messenger ﷺ did not force anyone from either group.

"Jibril, peace be upon him, came to the Prophet ﷺ when the sun had passed its zenith and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray Zuhr when the sun has passed its zenith.' Then he waited until a man's shadow was equal to his height. Then he came to him for 'Asr and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray 'Asr.' Then he waited until the sunset, then he came to him and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray Maghrib.' So he got up and prayed it when the sun had set. Then he waited until the twilight disappeared, then he came to him and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray 'Isha'.' So he got up and prayed it. Then he came to him when dawn broke and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he got up and prayed Subh.' So he got up and prayed Subh. Then he came to him the next day when a man's shadow was equal to his height, and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed Zuhr. Then Jibril came to him when a man's shadow was equal to twice his length and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed 'Asr. Then he came to him for Maghrib when the sun set, at exactly the same time as the day before, and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed Maghrib. Then he came to him for 'Isha' when the first third of the night had passed, and said: 'Get up and pray.' So he prayed 'Isha'. Then he came to him for Subh when it had become very bright, and said: 'Get up and pray.' So he prayed Subh. Then he said: 'The times of prayer one between those two (limits).'" Amr ibn Maymun al-Awdi said: Mu'adh ibn Jabal, the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us in Yemen, I heard his takbir (utterance of AllahuAkbar) in the dawn prayer. He was a man with loud voice. I began to love him. I did depart from him until I buried him dead in Syria (i.e. until his death). Then I searched for a person who had deep understanding in religion amongst the people after him. So I came to Ibn Mas'ud and remained in his company until his death. He (Ibn Mas'ud) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: How will you act when you are ruled by rulers who say prayer beyond its proper time? I said: What do you command me, Messenger of Allah, if I witness such a time? He replied: Offer the prayer at its proper time and also say your prayer along with them as a supererogatory prayer. A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ while we were with him. She said: Messenger of Allah, my husband, Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal, beats me when I pray, and makes me break my fast when I keep a fast, and he does not offer the dawn prayer until the sun rises. He asked Safwan, who was present, about what she had said. He replied: Messenger of Allah, as for her statement "he beats me when I pray", she recites two surahs (during prayer) and I have prohibited her (to do so). He (the Prophet) said: If one surah is recited (during prayer), that is sufficient for the people. (Safwan continued:) As regards her saying "he makes me break my fast," she dotes on fasting; I am a young man, I cannot restrain myself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on that day: A woman should not fast except with the permission of her husband. (Safwan said:) As for her statement that I do not pray until the sun rises, we are a people belonging to a class, and that (our profession of supplying water) is already known about us. We do not awake until the sun rises. He said: When you awake, offer your prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2459)

"A man came to the Prophet and asked him about the times of the prayer. He said: 'Pray with us for two days.' When the sun passed its zenith he commanded Bilal to call the Adhan, then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for Zuhr; then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for 'Asr when the sun was high and clearly white. Then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for Maghrib when the sun had set; then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for 'Isha' when the red afterglow had disappeared; then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for Fajr when dawn came. On the following day he commanded him to give the Adhan for Zuhr when the extreme heat had passed and it had cooled down; then he prayed 'Asr when the sun was still high, but he delayed it more than he had done the day before; then he prayed Maghrib before the red afterglow disappeared; he prayed 'Isha' when one-third of the night had passed; and he prayed Fajr at the time when it was already light. Then he said: 'Where is the one who was asking about the times of Prayer?' The man said: 'Here I am, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'The times of your prayer are between the times you have seen.'" Sometimes he would delay it until the people gathered. And he would pray Fajr when it was still dark. Then he would pray again and it would become bright.
