[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "Witr (an odd number of units of prayer) is a right (obligatory). So whoever wishes to perform Witr with five (units of prayer), let them do so. And whoever wishes to perform Witr with three (units), let them do so. And whoever wishes to perform Witr with one (unit), let them do so. And whoever finds it difficult, let them gesture with their head."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed eight units and the Witr prayer with us in the month of Ramadan. When it was time for childbirth, we gathered in the mosque and hoped that he would come out to us. But he did not come out until we entered the mosque and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we gathered in the mosque and hoped that you would pray with us." He said, "I feared that the Witr prayer might be made obligatory upon you, or that it might become difficult for you."

He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, is there anything before them or after them?' He said: 'Allah has enjoined upon His salves (five) prayers.' The man swore that he would not do anything more or less than that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'If he is speaking the truth he will most certainly enter Paradise.'"

But whoever does them but omits something from them out of negligence, will not have such a covenant with Allah; if He wills He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1401)

When Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Muʿadh to Yemen, he said (to him), "YOU are going to people of a (Divine) Book. First of all invite them to worship Allah (alone) and when they come to know Allah, inform them that Allah has enjoined on them, five prayers in every day and night; and if they start offering these prayers, inform them that Allah has enjoined on them, the Zakat. And it is to be taken from the rich amongst them and given to the poor amongst them; and if they obey you in that, take Zakat from them and avoid (don't take) the best property of the people as Zakat." How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray during Ramadhan ? She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pray more than eleven rak'ahs during Ramadhan and other than Ramadhan. He would pray four rak'ahs. Do not ask about their elegance and length. He then would pray for rak'ahs. Do not ask about their alegance and length. Then he would pray three rak'ahs. 'Aishah said: I asked: Messenger of Allah, do you sleep before observing witr ? He replied: 'Aishah, my eyes sleep, but my heart does not sleep. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1341)

Between the time when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the night prayer till the dawn broke, he used to pray eleven rak'ahs, uttering the salutation at the end of every two and observing the witr with a single one, and during that he would make a prostration about as long a one of you would take to recite fifty verses before raising his head. When the mu'adhdhin finished making the call for the dawn prayer, he stood up and prayed two short rak'ahs, then he lay down on his right side till the mu'adhdhin came to him (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1336)
