ذِكْرُ الْخَبَرِ الْمُدْحِضِ قَوْلَ مَنْ أَبْطَلَ الْوِتْرَ بِرَكْعَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ

[Machine] He heard Ibn Umar say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the night prayer, and he replied, "One of you should pray two units, two units, until he fears the dawn, then he should perform a prostration that prolongs what he has prayed."

ابن حبّان:٢٤٢٦ – أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السَّامِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْمَقَابِرِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ وَأَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ «يُصَلِّي أَحَدُكُمْ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى حَتَّى إِذَا خَشِيَ أَنْ يُصْبِحَ سَجَدَ سَجْدَةً تُوتِرُ لَهُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى»

Once a person asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ ﷺ about the night prayer. Allah's Apostle ﷺ replied, "The night prayer is offered as two Rakʿat followed by two Rakʿat and so on and if anyone is afraid of the approaching dawn (Fajr prayer) he should pray one Rakʿah and this will be a Witr for all the Rakʿat which he has prayed before."

البخاري:٩٩٠ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ نَافِعٍ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ صَلاَةِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلاَةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خَشِيَ أَحَدُكُمُ الصُّبْحَ صَلَّى رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً تُوتِرُ لَهُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى

muslim:749a – Yaḥyá b. Yaḥyá > Mālik > Nāfiʿ And ʿAbd Allāh b. Dīnār > Ibn ʿUmar

Prayer during the night should consist of pairs of rak'ahs, but if one of you fears morning is near, he should pray one rak'ah which will make his prayer an odd number for him.

مسلم:٧٤٩a – وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

nasai:1694 – Muḥammad b. Salamah And al-Ḥārith b. Miskīn > Ibn al-Qāsim > Mālik > Nāfiʿ Waʿabd Allāh b. Dīnār > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar

A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about prayer at night and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Prayer at night is two by two, then if one of you fears that dawn will break, pray one rak'ah to make the total number that he prayed odd."

النسائي:١٦٩٤ – أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ وَالْحَارِثُ بْنُ مِسْكِينٍ قِرَاءَةً عَلَيْهِ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ عَنْ نَافِعٍ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi and Abdullah ibn Umar that a man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about night prayers. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Night prayers are two by two, and when you are afraid that dawn is approaching, pray one raka to make what you have prayed odd."

مالك:٧-١٣ – حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ

A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the prayer at night. A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the prayer at night. الدارمي:١٥٠٠ – أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ «مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خَشِيَ أَحَدُكُمُ الصُّبْحَ فَلْيُصَلِّ رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً تُوتِرُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى»

darimi:1625 – Khālid b. Makhlad > Mālik > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

[Machine] A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the night prayer. He replied, "It is done in pairs. And when one of you fears the dawn, he should perform one more unit of prayer to complete what he has offered." Abu Muhammad was asked, "Do you adhere to it?" He replied, "Yes."

الدارمي:١٦٢٥ – أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ «مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خَشِيَ أَحَدُكُمُ الصُّبْحَ فَلْيُصَلِّ رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً تُوتِرُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى» قِيلَ لِأَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ تَأْخُذُ بِهِ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»
