"Jibril, peace be upon him, came to the Prophet ﷺ when the sun had passed its zenith and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray Zuhr when the sun has passed its zenith.' Then he waited until a man's shadow was equal to his height. Then he came to him for 'Asr and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray 'Asr.' Then he waited until the sunset, then he came to him and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray Maghrib.' So he got up and prayed it when the sun had set. Then he waited until the twilight disappeared, then he came to him and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray 'Isha'.' So he got up and prayed it. Then he came to him when dawn broke and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he got up and prayed Subh.' So he got up and prayed Subh. Then he came to him the next day when a man's shadow was equal to his height, and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed Zuhr. Then Jibril came to him when a man's shadow was equal to twice his length and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed 'Asr. Then he came to him for Maghrib when the sun set, at exactly the same time as the day before, and said: 'Get up, O Muhammad, and pray.' So he prayed Maghrib. Then he came to him for 'Isha' when the first third of the night had passed, and said: 'Get up and pray.' So he prayed 'Isha'. Then he came to him for Subh when it had become very bright, and said: 'Get up and pray.' So he prayed Subh. Then he said: 'The times of prayer one between those two (limits).'" [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The time for Dhuhr prayer is when the sun declines and the shadow of a person is equal to his height, until Asr prayer. The time for Asr prayer is until the sun turns yellow. The time for Isha prayer is until the middle of the night or half of the night. The time for Fajr prayer is until the sun rises."
Prayer at its appointed hour. I (again) said: Then what? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Kindness to the parents. I (again) said: Then what? He replied: Earnest endeavour (Jihad) in the cause of Allah. And I would have not ceased asking more questions but out of regard (for his feelings). (Using translation from Muslim 85a)

[Machine] He asked the Prophet SAW which deeds are most beloved to Allah. The Prophet SAW replied, "Prayer at its appointed time." He asked again, "Then what?" The Prophet SAW said, "Good treatment of parents." He asked again, "Then what?" The Prophet SAW said, "Jihad in the cause of Allah." He said, "He mentioned these to me and if I had asked for more, he would have told me more."

Amr ibn Maymun al-Awdi said: Mu'adh ibn Jabal, the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us in Yemen, I heard his takbir (utterance of AllahuAkbar) in the dawn prayer. He was a man with loud voice. I began to love him. I did depart from him until I buried him dead in Syria (i.e. until his death). Then I searched for a person who had deep understanding in religion amongst the people after him. So I came to Ibn Mas'ud and remained in his company until his death. He (Ibn Mas'ud) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: How will you act when you are ruled by rulers who say prayer beyond its proper time? I said: What do you command me, Messenger of Allah, if I witness such a time? He replied: Offer the prayer at its proper time and also say your prayer along with them as a supererogatory prayer.
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ said, "How would you be if you remained among people who delay the prayer beyond its time?" He said, "What should I do?" He said, "Pray the prayer on its exact time. If you catch up with them and they have not prayed, then pray with them and do not say, 'I have already prayed, so I will not pray.'"

A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ while we were with him. She said: Messenger of Allah, my husband, Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal, beats me when I pray, and makes me break my fast when I keep a fast, and he does not offer the dawn prayer until the sun rises. He asked Safwan, who was present, about what she had said. He replied: Messenger of Allah, as for her statement "he beats me when I pray", she recites two surahs (during prayer) and I have prohibited her (to do so). He (the Prophet) said: If one surah is recited (during prayer), that is sufficient for the people. (Safwan continued:) As regards her saying "he makes me break my fast," she dotes on fasting; I am a young man, I cannot restrain myself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on that day: A woman should not fast except with the permission of her husband. (Safwan said:) As for her statement that I do not pray until the sun rises, we are a people belonging to a class, and that (our profession of supplying water) is already known about us. We do not awake until the sun rises. He said: When you awake, offer your prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2459)

"A man came to the Prophet and asked him about the times of the prayer. He said: 'Pray with us for two days.' When the sun passed its zenith he commanded Bilal to call the Adhan, then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for Zuhr; then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for 'Asr when the sun was high and clearly white. Then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for Maghrib when the sun had set; then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for 'Isha' when the red afterglow had disappeared; then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for Fajr when dawn came. On the following day he commanded him to give the Adhan for Zuhr when the extreme heat had passed and it had cooled down; then he prayed 'Asr when the sun was still high, but he delayed it more than he had done the day before; then he prayed Maghrib before the red afterglow disappeared; he prayed 'Isha' when one-third of the night had passed; and he prayed Fajr at the time when it was already light. Then he said: 'Where is the one who was asking about the times of Prayer?' The man said: 'Here I am, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'The times of your prayer are between the times you have seen.'" Urwah said, "I heard Bashir ibn Abi Mas'ood say, 'I heard Abu Mas'ood al-Ansari say, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Jibril came down and informed me of the time of prayer, so I prayed with him. Then I prayed with him again. Then I prayed with him again. Then I prayed with him again. Then I prayed with him.'" He counted on his fingers five prayers. "And I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying Dhuhr when the sun was about to set, and sometimes he would delay it until the heat intensified. And I saw him praying Asr when the sun was high and white before the yellow color entered it. Then a person would leave the prayer and come to Dhul-Hulayfah before the sunset and would pray Maghrib when the sun had set, and would pray Isha when the horizon became dark. Sometimes he would delay it until the people gathered. And he would pray Fajr when it was still dark. Then he would pray again and it would become bright. Then after that, his prayer would be at mid-galas (a unit of measurement) until he died. He did not cease doing so until it emerged (became light).'"

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When it is hot, make delay (in the noon prayer) till it cools down, for the intensity of beat is from the Exhalation of Hell; and he also mentioned that Hellfire complained to the Lord (about the congested atmosphere) and so it was permitted to take two exhalations during the whole year, one exhalation during the winter and one exhalation during the summer. [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Asr prayer with us, and when he finished, a man from the Banu Salimah approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we want to slaughter a sheep and we would love for you to be present." The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." So he left and we went with him. We found the sheep, but it had not been slaughtered yet. It was slaughtered, then it was cut into pieces, cooked, and we ate it before the sun set.

Anas b. Malik said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say the 'Asr prayer when the sun was high and bright and living, then one would go off to al-'Awali and get there while the sun was still high. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 404)
The Messenger of Allah used to pray 'Asr when the sun was still hot and high, and if a person were to go to the suburbs (of Al-Madinah) he would be able to reach it while the sun was still hot and high. (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 682)
