9. Book of Ṣalāh (2/30)
It was narrated from 'Aishah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed 'Asr when the sun was in her room and the shadow had not appeared on her wall. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 505)
Anas b. Malik said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say the 'Asr prayer when the sun was high and bright and living, then one would go off to al-'Awali and get there while the sun was still high. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 404)
Salama b. al-Akwa' reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray the evening prayer when the sun had set and disappeared (behind the horizon). (Using translation from Muslim 636)
'Mu'adh bin Jabal would pray Al-Maghrib with the Messenger of Allah, then he would return to his people to lead them (in prayer)." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 583)
"A man came to the Prophet and asked him about the times of the prayer. He said: 'Pray with us for two days.' When the sun passed its zenith he commanded Bilal to call the Adhan, then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for Zuhr; then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for 'Asr when the sun was high and clearly white. Then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for Maghrib when the sun had set; then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for 'Isha' when the red afterglow had disappeared; then he commanded him to give the Iqamah for Fajr when dawn came. On the following day he commanded him to give the Adhan for Zuhr when the extreme heat had passed and it had cooled down; then he prayed 'Asr when the sun was still high, but he delayed it more than he had done the day before; then he prayed Maghrib before the red afterglow disappeared; he prayed 'Isha' when one-third of the night had passed; and he prayed Fajr at the time when it was already light. Then he said: 'Where is the one who was asking about the times of Prayer?' The man said: 'Here I am, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'The times of your prayer are between the times you have seen.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 667)
"I am the most knowledgeable among the people about the prescribed time of this prayer: Messenger of Allah would pray it when the moon set on the third (of the month)." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 165)
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to delay the later 'Isha'."[1] [1] It is described as the later 'Isha' prayer because the Maghrib prayer is sometimes called 'Isha' prayer, but it is the first 'Isha'. Some scholars are of the opinion that it is disliked to call Maghrib 'Isha' without qualifying it as the first 'Isha'. See Fath Al-Bari. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 533)
[Machine] About the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "He used to pray Dhuhr when the sun moves away, and Asr when the sun is still vivid, and Maghrib when the sun sets, and sometimes he would del ayy it, and sometimes he would delay it. When people came, he would hasten it, and when they did not come, he would delay it. And they used to pray Fajr in thick darkness."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allahﷺ came out to his companions one night while they were waiting for the evening prayer. He said, "People have prayed and gone to sleep, while you are waiting for it. Indeed, you are in a prayer that you have been waiting for." Then he said, "If it were not for the hardship on the weak or the fatigue of the elderly, I would have delayed this prayer until later in the night."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed the Isha prayer, then went out to the mosque while the people were waiting for the prayer. He said, "Indeed, no one from the people of religions remembers Allah at this hour except you." Then the verse was revealed to him: "Not all of them are alike; a party of the people of the Scripture stand for the recitation of Allah's verses during the hours of the night, and they prostrate themselves (in prayer)."
أَخَّرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الْعِشَاءِ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَالنَّاسُ يَنْتَظِرُونَ الصَّلَاةَ فَقَالَ «أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَدْيَانِ أَحَدٌ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ غَيْرُكُمْ» ثُمَّ نَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ {لَيْسُوا سَوَاءً مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ أُمَّةٌ قَائِمَةٌ يَتْلُونَ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ} إِلَى {يَسْجُدُونَ}
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Were I not afraid that it would be hard on my followers, I would order them to use the siwak (as obligatory, for cleaning the teeth). (Using translation from Bukhārī 7240)
[Machine] I said to Ataa, "At what time do you prefer that I pray the night prayer, either in congregation or individually?" He said, "I heard Ibn Abbas saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would pray the night prayer when people had gone to bed and awakened, and gone to bed and awakened. Then Umar called for the prayer, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out, and it was as if I can see him now with water dripping from his head, placing his hands on his head, and he said, 'If it were not too difficult for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to pray like this.'"
[Machine] "One night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in complete darkness, and Umar ibn al-Khattab came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the women and children have gone to sleep, so should we perform the prayer?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out with water dripping from his head and said, 'If it were not for the hardship on the believers, I would have commanded them to pray this prayer.'"
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ deferred one night the 'Isya' prayer. And this is called 'Atama. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not come out till Umar b. Khattab told (him) that the women and children had gone to sleep. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out towards them and said to the people of the mosque: None except you from the people of the earth waits for it (for the night prayer at this late hour), and it was before Islam had spread amongst people. And in the narration transmitted by Ibn Shihab the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is reported to have said: It is not meant that you should compel the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for prayer. And (this he said) when 'Umar b. Khattab called (the Holy Prophet) in a loud voice. (Using translation from Muslim 638a)
"We stayed in the Masjid one night waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to pray 'Isha'. He came out to us when one-third of the night or more had passed, and he said when he came out: 'You are waiting for a prayer for which the followers of no other religion are waiting. Were it not that I would impose too much difficulty on my Ummah, I would have led them in prayer at this time.' Then he commanded the Mu'adhdhin to say the Iqamah and he prayed." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 537)
[Machine] From Thabit, it is narrated that they said to Anas ibn Malik, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ have a ring?" He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ postponed the Isha prayer one night until half of the night had passed. Then he came and said, 'The people have prayed and you will remain in prayer as long as you wait for the prayer.' Anas said, 'It is as if I am looking at the white ring of his ﷺ from silver.' Anas raised his left hand."

The desert Arabs may not dominate you in respect of the name of your prayer. Beware! It is al-ʿIsha, but they milk their camels when it is fairly dark. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4984)
