Why donʿt you appoint a successor? He said: If I do not do that, one who is better than me did not do it either, namely the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; if I do that, one who is better than me did it too, namely Abu Bakr. (Using translation from Aḥmad 299)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Abdul Rahman, do not ask for leadership, for if you are given it as a result of your request, you will be left to deal with it on your own. And if you are given it without asking, you will be assisted in it. And if you are given a choice between two options and you see that one of them is better, then choose the one that is better and ask Allah to bless your choice."
"You will become keen for positions of authority, but that will become a regret and loss. What a good life they will live, but how hard it will be for them when they die." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4211)
[Machine] On the authority of Abu Hazim, the freed slave of Abu Ruhum al-Ghifari, on the authority of Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Woe to the rulers, for surely people would wish that they were dangling on their tails like monkeys, rather than being rulers."
[Machine] He informed him that the Prophet ﷺ said, "The just people on the Day of Judgment will be on pulpits of light, on the right side of the Most Merciful, and both of their hands will be on their families and children, and what they have done."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "Those who are just in the eyes of the Most Merciful are those who are fair in their judgments, dealings, and relationships, and they fulfill their responsibilities properly."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are: (1) a just ruler; (2) a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, (i.e. worship Allah (Alone) sincerely from his childhood), (3) a man whose heart is attached to the mosque (who offers the five compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque); (4) two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause only; (5) a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for an illegal sexual intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah; (6) a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity). (7) a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes get flooded with tears." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1423)
[Machine] Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ sent Abu Jahl bin Hudhayfah as a representative to collect charity. A man refused to give him charity, so Abu Jahl struck him and injured him. They all went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, seek justice!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have this and that." They were not satisfied, so he said again, "You have this and that." They were still not satisfied, so he said, "You have this and that." Finally, they agreed and said, "Are you satisfied?" They replied, "Yes."
[Machine] That Haytah used to enter the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ without being counted among the family members. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon him while he was being described as a woman, and he said: "When she approaches, she approaches with four and when she turns away, she turns away with eight." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do I not see that he knows what is happening here? He should not enter upon you." So he expelled him, and he would come to the outskirts and enter every Friday, feeding them.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Everyone of you is a guardian and everyone of you is responsible (for his wards). A ruler is a guardian and is responsible(for his subjects); a man is a guardian of his family and responsible (for them); a wife is a guardian of her husband's house and she is responsible (for it), a slave is a guardian of his master's property and is responsible (for that). Beware! All of you are guardians and are responsible (for your wards). (Using translation from Bukhārī 5188)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allahﷺ say, "Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock. The leader is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock. A man is a shepherd in his household and is responsible for his flock. A woman is a shepherdess in her husband's house and is responsible for her flock. A servant is a shepherd in his master's wealth and is responsible for his flock. And each of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock. The amir (ruler) who is over the people is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock; a man is a shepherd in charge of the inhabitants of his household and he is responsible for his flock; a woman is a shepherdess in charge of her husband's house and children and she is responsible for them; and a man's slave is a shepherd in charge of his master's property and he is responsible for it. So each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2928)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When Allah has a good purpose for a ruler, He appoints for him a sincere minister who reminds him if he forgets and helps him if he remembers; but when Allah has a different purpose from that for him. He appoints for him an evil minister who does not remind him if he forgets and does not help him if he remembers. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2932)
Ubaidullah b Ziyad visited Ma'qil b. Yasir al-Muzani in his last iliness. Ma'qil said (to him): I am narrating to you a tradition I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If I knew that I am to survive this illness. I would, not narrate it to you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: If God appointed anyone ruler over a people and he died while he was still treacherous to his people, God would forbid his entry into Paradise. (Using translation from Muslim 142e)

[Machine] Safiyyah bint Huyayy, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , told me that she came to the Prophet ﷺ and spoke to him while he was in seclusion in the mosque. He stood up with me one night to escort me to my house. However, two men from the Ansar (helpers) saw him and felt shy, so they turned back. He said, "Come, it is Safiyyah bint Huyayy." They replied, "We seek refuge with Allah. How can we think evil of you? But we know that Satan runs through the veins of human beings just like blood."
“Take it easy, she is Safiyyah bint Huyai.” They said: “Glorious is Allah, O Messenger of Allah!” And they were very upset by that (i.e., that he thought they may have some doubts). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The Satan flows through the son of Adam like blood, and I was afraid that he might cast some doubt into your hearts.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1779)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, the Quraysh have a recent connection to the days of ignorance, and I wanted to reconcile them." Then he said to them: "Is there anyone among you who is not from your group?" They said: "We have a nephew." He ﷺ said: "The nephew of a people is considered one of their own."

[Machine] A Bedouin man asked the Prophet ﷺ for something, so he ordered him to be given a flock of sheep. Ibn Aisha mentioned their large number. The Bedouin man then went to his people and said, "O people, embrace Islam for Muhammad gives abundantly to those who are not afraid of poverty."

[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the year of Tabuk, until we reached Wadi Al-Qura. Then, we saw a woman in her garden. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions, "Back away." So, the people backed away, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ backed away about ten paces. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the woman, "Count what comes out of it until I return to you, if Allah wills." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded until he reached Tabuk. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A strong wind will blow upon you tonight. No man should stand in it. Whoever has a camel, let him tie its harness." Abu Humayd said, "We secured it, and when it was nighttime, a wind blew upon us. A man stood in it, and it threw him into a rocky mountain. Then, the Angel of Aylah came to him and presented a white she-mule to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ clothed it with a saddle blanket and wrote for him. Then, he moved forward, and we moved with him until we reached Wadi Al-Qura. He said to the woman, "How many gardens do you have?" She said, "Ten gardens." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ counted them, and then he said, "I am in a hurry. Whoever among you wants to hurry with me, let him do so." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, and we went out with him until he entered Madinah. He said, "This is Tabah." When he saw Uhud, he said, "This is Uhud, it loves us, and we love it. He said, "The best homes of the Ansar are Banu An-Najjar, then the houses of Banu Abdul Ashhal, then the houses of Banu Al-Harith, then the houses of Banu Sa'ida, and in every home of the Ansar is goodness."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever carries my message to Caesar, he will have Paradise." A man from the people asked, "Even if I am not killed?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Even if you are not killed." So the man set off and met with Caesar while he was arriving at Jerusalem with a royal robe that no one else could walk on. He threw the message onto the robe and stepped aside. When Caesar reached the message, he picked it up and called the chief of the Ghassanid tribe to read it for him. He said, "I have no knowledge about this book, except the same knowledge as you." Caesar then called out, "Who is the companion of this book?" The man came forward and said, "When I arrive, come to me." When he arrived, he went to him and Caesar ordered the doors of his palace to be closed. Then he ordered the caller to announce that Caesar has followed Muhammad ﷺ and left Christianity. His soldiers turned to Islam and they were armed until they surrounded his palace. Caesar said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "You see that I am afraid for my kingdom." Then he ordered the caller to announce that Caesar has accepted Islam and sent him dinars. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ read the letter, he said, "The enemy of Allah has lied. He is not a Muslim and he is still a Christian." Then he divided the dinars (among the Muslims).

[Machine] I was in the delegation of Banu Al-Muntafiq. While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a shepherd raised his flock of sheep to the pasture. Suddenly, one of them ran away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What did it give birth to?" The shepherd replied, "A healthy lamb." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Slaughter a sheep in its place." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not think that it is due to shortage or that it is an obligation for us to slaughter it. We slaughter a sheep in its place every time the shepherd gives birth to a healthy lamb." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a wife who uses bad words." He said, "Then divorce her." I said, "But she is my companion, and I have children with her." He said, "Advise her with kind words, perhaps she will understand, and do not harm her like she harms you." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution." He said, "When you perform ablution, perform it thoroughly, separate your fingers, and sniff water well unless you are fasting."

A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, does good come with evil?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until we thought that he would receive revelation. Then, he began to sweat and his face turned red. He awoke and asked, "Where is the inquirer?" The man said, "Here I am, seeking nothing but goodness." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, good only brings good. Every plant that springs in spring is either a strong poison or a food for grazing animals. Verily, it is their food. When their sides grow weak, they face the sun, and they grow wilted and yellow. Then, they come back to life and I eat them. Then, they overflow with strength and ripen. This wealth is sweet, green, and fruitful. Whoever takes it rightfully will be blessed with it, and whoever takes it unlawfully will not be blessed with it. It is like someone who eats but is never satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand." Al-Husayn bin Al-Hasan claimed that Sufyan asked him about this hadith forty years ago.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed a man from the Azd tribe called Ibn al-Utbiyya, in charge of Sadaqat to be received from Banu Sulaim. When he came (back), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him to render his account. He said: This wealth is for you (i.e. for the public treasury) and this is a gift (presented to me). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You should have remained in the house of your father and your mother, until your gift came to you if you spoke the truth; then he addressed us. He praised God and extolled Him, and afterwards said: I appoint a man from you to a responsible post sharing with him authority that God has entrusted to me, and he comes to me saying: This wealth is for you (i.e. for the public treasury) and this is a gift presented to me. Why did he not remain in the house of his father and his mother and his gift came to him, if he was truthful? By God, any one of you will not take anything from (the public funds) without any justification, but will meet his Lord carrying it on himself on the Day of judgment. I will recognise any one of you meeting Allah and carrying a growling camel, or a cow bellowing or a goat bleating. Then he raised his hands so high that whiteness of his armpits could be seen. Then he said: O my Lord, I have conveyed (Thy Commandments). The narrator says: My eyes saw (the Prophet standing in that pose) and my ears heard (what he said). (Using translation from Muslim 1832c)

[Machine] We were with the Prophet ﷺ at Hunayn when he said about a man who claimed to be Muslim, "He is from the people of the Fire." When the battle began, the man fought fiercely and was wounded. It was said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, the man you said is from the people of the Fire, today fought fiercely and died." The Prophet ﷺ said, "He will be in the Fire." Some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ almost doubted it. While they were in this state, it was said to them, "He did not die, but he has severe wounds." When night fell, he could not bear the pain of his wounds and killed himself. The Prophet ﷺ was informed about this, and he said, "Allah is the Greatest! I bear witness that I am the slave of Allah and His Messenger." Then he ordered Bilal to call out to the people, "None shall enter Paradise except a Muslim soul, and indeed Allah supports His religion with a sinful person."

"From 'Ubaid bin As-Sabbaq, that Zaid bin Thabit narrated to him, he said: 'Abu Bakr As-Siddiq sent for me - (regarding) those killed at Al-Yamamah - and 'Umar bin Al-Khattab was with him. He (Abu Bakr) said: "'Umar came to me and said: The fighting inflicted many casualties among the reciters of the Qur'an on the Day of Al-Yamamah, and I fear that there will be more casualties among the reciters in other parts of the land, such that much of the Qur'an may be lost. In my view, you should order that the Qur'an be collected.'" Abu Bakr said to 'Umar: "How can I do something which was not done my the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" 'Umar said: 'By Allah! It is something good.' 'Umar continued trying to convince me until Allah opened up my chest to that which He had opened the chest of 'Umar, and I saw it as he saw it." Abu Bakr and 'Umar continued trying to convince me, until Allah opened up my chest for that, just as He had opened their chests, the chest of Abu Bakr and the chest of 'Umar. So I began searching for Qur'anic material from parchments, leaf stalks of date-palms and Al-Likhaf - meaning stones - and the chests of men. I found the end of Surah Bara'ah with Khuzaimah bin Thabit: Verily, there has come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty. He is eager for you; for the believers (he is) full of pity, kind, and merciful. But if they turn away, say: "Allah is sufficient for me. It is something good.' 'Umar continued trying to convince me until Allah opened up my chest to that which He had opened the chest of 'Umar, and I saw it as he saw it." Zaid said: 'Abu Bakr said: "You are a young wise man, and we have no suspicions of you. You used to write down the Revelation for the Messenger of Allah as the Qur'an was revealed." He (Zaid) said: 'By Allah! If they had ordered to move one of the mountains it would have been lighter on me than that.' He said: 'I said: "How will you do something which was not done by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" Abu Bakr said: "By Allah! It is something good." Abu Bakr and 'Umar continued trying to convince me, until Allah opened up my chest for that, just as He had opened their chests, the chest of Abu Bakr and the chest of 'Umar. There is no god but He, in Him I put my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne (9:128 & 129).'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3103)

[Machine] "He gathered the people of Sham and the people of Iraq for the invasion of Azerbaijan and Armenia, and they started studying the Quran. They disagreed on it to the point that fighting almost broke out among them. Huzaifah ibn al-Yaman rode his horse when he saw their disagreement in the Quran, and he went to Uthman ibn Affan and said, 'People have disagreed on the Quran to an extent that I fear they will suffer the same fate as the Jews and Christians due to their disagreements.' Uthman was greatly alarmed by this, and he sent a message to Hafsah, who retrieved the scriptures that Abu Bakr had ordered Zaid to gather. Uthman then compiled the copies of the Quran from these scriptures and sent them to different regions. Later, when Marwan became the ruler of Medina, he asked Hafsah about the scriptures, intending to destroy them because he feared that there might be discrepancies among the common people. However, I prevented him from doing so." Ibn Shihab said, "Salim ibn Abdullah narrated to me that when Hafsah passed away, Uthman sent Abdullah ibn Umar with a letter, asking for the return of the scriptures. When they returned from Hafsah's funeral, Ibn Umar sent a message to Marwan, who burned the scriptures out of fear that there might be discrepancies, as Uthman had previously abrogated them."
