Once the Prophet ﷺ was riding his camel and a man was holding its rein. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is the day today?" We kept quiet, thinking that he might give that day another name. He said, "Isn't it the day of Nahr (slaughtering of the animals of sacrifice)" We replied, "Yes." He further asked, "Which month is this?" We again kept quiet, thinking that he might give it another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "Verily! Your blood, property and honor are sacred to one another (i.e. Muslims) like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours and in this city of yours. It is incumbent upon those who are present to inform those who are absent because those who are absent might comprehend (what I have said) better than the present audience."

عَنْ أَبِيهِ ذَكَرَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَعَدَ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَأَمْسَكَ إِنْسَانٌ بِخِطَامِهِ أَوْ بِزِمَامِهِ قَالَ أَىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِذِي الْحِجَّةِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَإِنَّ الشَّاهِدَ عَسَى أَنْ يُبَلِّغَ مَنْ هُوَ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْهُ

Ibn ʿAbbas said: "Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon on the Day of Nahr, and said, 'O people! (Tell me) what is the day today?' The people replied, 'It is the forbidden (sacred) day.' He asked again, 'What town is this?' They replied, 'It is the forbidden (Sacred) town.' He asked, 'Which month is this?' They replied, 'It is the forbidden (Sacred) month.' He said, 'No doubt! Your blood, your properties, and your honor are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this (sacred) town (Mecca) of yours, in this month of yours.' The Prophet ﷺ repeated his statement again and again. After that he raised his head and said, 'O Allah! Haven't conveyed (Your Message) to them'. Haven't I conveyed Your Message to them?' " Ibn ʿAbbas added, "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, the following was his will (Prophet's will) to his followers:--It is incumbent upon those who are present to convey this information to those who are absent Beware don't renegade (as) disbelievers (turn into infidels) after me, Striking the necks (cutting the throats) of one another.' "

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا قَالُوا يَوْمٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ فَأَىُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا قَالُوا بَلَدٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ فَأَىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا قَالُوا شَهْرٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فَأَعَادَهَا مِرَارًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ اللَّهُمَّ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ إِنَّهَا لَوَصِيَّتُهُ إِلَى أُمَّتِهِ فَلْيُبْلِغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ لاَ تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ

We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He remained silent till we thought that he might give it another name. He then said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied: "Yes! It is." He further asked, "What town is this?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know it better." He remained silent till we thought that he might give it another name. He then said, "Isn't it the forbidden (Sacred) town (of Mecca)?" We said, "Yes. It is." He said, "No doubt, your blood and your properties are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this town of yours, till the day you meet your Lord. No doubt! Haven't I conveyed Allah's message to you? They said, "Yes." He said, "O Allah! Be witness. So it is incumbent upon those who are present to convey it (this information) to those who are absent because the informed one might comprehend it (what I have said) better than the present audience, who will convey it to him. Beware! Do not renegade (as) disbelievers after me by striking the necks (cutting the throats) of one another."

خَطَبَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ قَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ أَىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ أَىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ ذُو الْحَجَّةِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ أَىُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَتْ بِالْبَلْدَةِ الْحَرَامِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا إِلَى يَوْمِ تَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ أَلاَ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ فَلْيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَرُبَّ مُبَلَّغٍ أَوْعَى مِنْ سَامِعٍ فَلاَ تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ

from the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “Indeed, ˹calendar months˺ have returned to its original state, as it was on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive—Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and al-Muharram—and Rajab of Mudar, which is between the two Jumads and Sha‘ban.”

Then he said: “Which month is this?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remained silent until we thought he would name it by a another name. He said: “Is it not Dhu al-Hijjah?” We said: Yes. He said: “Which land is this?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remained silent until we thought he would name it by another name. He said: “Is it not the Baldah (Sacred Precinct)?” We said: Yes. He said: “Which day is this?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remained silent until we thought he would name it by another name. He said: “Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?” We said: Yes.

He said: *“Indeed, your blood and your wealth” —Muhammad said, and I think he also said— “and your honor are sacred to one another, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this land of yours, in this month of yours. And you will meet your Lord, and He will question you about your deeds. So do not return after me misguided, striking the necks of one another. Let the one who is present convey to the one who is absent, for perhaps some who are informed will comprehend it better than some who heard it.”

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «إِنَّ الزَّمَانَ قَدِ اسْتَدَارَ كَهَيْئَةِ يَوْمِ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ، السَّنَةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا، مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ، ثَلَاثَةٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ: ذُو الْقَعْدَةِ، وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ، وَالْمُحَرَّمُ، وَرَجَبُ مُضَرَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَانَ».

ثُمَّ قَالَ: «أَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟» قُلْنَا: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ. فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ، قَالَ: «أَلَيْسَ ذُو الْحِجَّةِ؟» قُلْنَا: بَلَى. قَالَ: «فَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟» قُلْنَا: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ. فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ، قَالَ: «أَلَيْسَ الْبَلْدَةَ؟» قُلْنَا: بَلَى. قَالَ: «فَأَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟» قُلْنَا: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ. فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ، قَالَ: «أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟» قُلْنَا: بَلَى.

قَالَ: «فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ» – قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ، وَأَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ – «وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ، عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ، كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا، فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا، فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا. وَسَتَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ، فَسَيَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ، أَلَا فَلَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي ضُلَّالًا، يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ. أَلَا، لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ، فَلَعَلَّ بَعْضَ مَنْ يُبَلَّغُهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْ بَعْضِ مَنْ سَمِعَهُ».

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Time has come back to its original state which it had on the day Allah created the Heavens and the Earth. The year is twelve months, four of which are sacred, three of them are in succession, namely Dhul-Qa'da, Dhul Hijja and Muharram, (the fourth being) Rajab Mudar which is between Juma'da (ath-thamj and Sha'ban. The Prophet ﷺ then asked, "Which month is this?" We said, "Allah and his Apostle know better." He kept silent so long that we thought that he would call it by a name other than its real name. He said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We said, "Yes." He said, "Which town is this?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He kept silent so long that we thought that he would call it t,y a name other than its real name. He said, "isn't it the town (of Mecca)?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "What day is today?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He kept silent so long that we thought that he would call it by a name other than its real name. He said, "Isn't it the day of Nahr?" We replied, "Yes." He then said, "Your blood, properties and honor are as sacred to one another as this day of yours in this town of yours in this month of yours. You will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Do not go astray after me by cutting the necks of each other. It is incumbent upon those who are present to convey this message to those who are absent, for some of those to whom it is conveyed may comprehend it better than some of those who have heard it directly." (Muhammad, the sub-narrator, on mentioning this used to say: The Prophet then said, "No doubt! Haven't I delivered (Allah's) Message (to you)? Haven't I delivered Allah's message (to you)?"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الزَّمَانُ قَدِ اسْتَدَارَ كَهَيْئَتِهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ السَّنَةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ثَلاَثٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ ذُو الْقَعْدَةِ وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ وَالْمُحَرَّمُ وَرَجَبُ مُضَرَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَانَ أَىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحِجَّةِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ أَىُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْبَلْدَةَ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَأَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ وَسَتَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ فَيَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ أَلاَ فَلاَ تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي ضُلاَّلاً يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ أَلاَ لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَلَعَلَّ بَعْضَ مَنْ يَبْلُغُهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْ بَعْضِ مَنْ سَمِعَهُ وَكَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ إِذَا ذَكَرَهُ قَالَ صَدَقَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلاَ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ أَلاَ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed the people saying, "Don't you know what is the day today?" They replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." We thought that he might give that day another name. The Prophet said, "Isn't it the day of An-Nahr?" We replied, "Yes. O Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He then said, "What town is this? Isn't it the forbidden (Sacred) Town (Mecca)?" We replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He then said, "Your blood, your properties, your honors and your skins (i.e., bodies) are as sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours in this month of yours in this town of yours. (Listen) Haven't I conveyed Allah's message to you?" We replied, "Yes" He said, "O Allah! Be witness (for it). So it is incumbent upon those who are present to convey it (this message of mine) to those who are absent because the informed one might comprehend what I have said better than the present audience who will convey it to him.)" The narrator added: In fact, it was like that. The Prophet ﷺ added, "Beware! Do not renegade as disbelievers after me by striking (cutting) the necks of one another."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ أَلاَ تَدْرُونَ أَىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا قَالُوا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِيَوْمِ النَّحْرِ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَىُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا أَلَيْسَتْ بِالْبَلْدَةِ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ وَأَبْشَارَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلاَ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ فَلْيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَإِنَّهُ رُبَّ مُبَلِّغٍ يُبَلِّغُهُ مَنْ هُوَ أَوْعَى لَهُ فَكَانَ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ لاَ تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمَ حُرِّقَ ابْنُ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ حِينَ حَرَّقَهُ جَارِيَةُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ قَالَ أَشْرِفُوا عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرَةَ فَقَالُوا هَذَا أَبُو بَكْرَةَ يَرَاكَ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ فَحَدَّثَتْنِي أُمِّي عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَوْ دَخَلُوا عَلَىَّ مَا بَهَشْتُ بِقَصَبَةٍ

The Prophet ﷺ then asked us, "Which month is this?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know (it) better." He kept quiet so long that we thought he might call it by another name. Then he said, "Isn't it Dhul-Hijja?" We said, "Yes." He asked "What town is this?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know (it) better.' Then he kept quiet so long that we thought he might call it by another name. He then said, "Isn't it the (forbidden) town (Mecca)?" We said, "Yes." He asked, "What is the day today?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know (it) better. Then he kept quiet so long that we thought that he might call it by another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the Day of An-Nahr (slaughtering of sacrifices)?" We said, "Yes." Then he said, "Your blood (lives), your properties," (the sub narrator Muhammad, said: I think he also said): "..and your honor) are as sacred to one another like the sanctity of this Day of yours, in this town of yours, in this month of yours. You shall meet your Lord and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Don't go astray after me by striking the necks of one another. Lo! It is incumbent upon those who are present to inform it to those who are absent for perhaps the informed one might comprehend it (understand it) better than some of the present audience." Whenever the sub-narrator Muhammad mentioned that statement, he would say, "The Prophet ﷺ said the truth.") And then the Prophet ﷺ added, "No doubt! Haven't I conveyed Allah's Message to you! No doubt! Haven't I conveyed Allah's Message to you?"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الزَّمَانُ قَدِ اسْتَدَارَ كَهَيْئَتِهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ السَّنَةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ثَلاَثٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ ذُو الْقَعَدَةِ وَذُو الْحَجَّةِ وَالْمُحَرَّمُ وَرَجَبُ مُضَرَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَانَ أَىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ يُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحَجَّةِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ أَىُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْبَلْدَةَ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَأَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا وَسَتَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ فَيَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ أَلاَ فَلاَ تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي ضُلاَّلاً يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ أَلاَ لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَلَعَلَّ بَعْضَ مَنْ يَبْلُغُهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَوْعَى مِنْ بَعْضِ مَنْ سَمِعَهُ فَكَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ إِذَا ذَكَرَهُ قَالَ صَدَقَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلاَ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ أَلاَ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ

Time has completed a cycle and come to the state of the day when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is constituted of twelve months, of which four are sacred; three of them consecutive, viz. Dhu'l-Qa'da, Dhu'l- Hijja and Muharram, and also Rajab the month of Mudar which comes between Jumada and Sha'ban. He (the Holy Prophet) then said: which month is this? We said Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet) remained silent for some time until we thought that he would give it a name other than that (by which it was known). He said: Is it not Dha'l-Hijja? We said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Which city is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the Holy Prophety remained silent until we thought that he would give it another name. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Is it not the Balda (the city of Mecca)? We said: Yes. He said: What day is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the Holy Prophet) remained silent until we thought that he would give it another name. He said: Is it not the Day of Sacrifice? We said: Messenger of Allah. yes. Thereupon he said: Your blood, your property (Muhammad, one of the narrators, said: I think, he also said this) and your honour are sacred to you like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this city of yours, and in this month of yours. You will soon meet your Lord and He will ask you about your deeds. So do not turn after me unbelievers (or misguided), some of you striking the necks of the others. Behold I let him who is present convey to him who is absent, for many a one whom a message is conveyed has a more retentive memory than one who hears. He again said: Behold! have I not delivered (the message) to you? This hadith has been narrated through another chain of transmitters, but with a slight variation of words.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ الزَّمَانَ قَدِ اسْتَدَارَ كَهَيْئَتِهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ السَّنَةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ثَلاَثَةٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ ذُو الْقَعْدَةِ وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ وَالْمُحَرَّمُ وَرَجَبٌ شَهْرُ مُضَرَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَانَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحِجَّةِ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَىُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْبَلْدَةَ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَأَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ حَرَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا وَسَتَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ فَيَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ فَلاَ تَرْجِعُنَّ بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا أَوْ ضُلاَّلاً يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ أَلاَ لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَلَعَلَّ بَعْضَ مَنْ يُبَلَّغُهُ يَكُونُ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْ بَعْضِ مَنْ سَمِعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلاَ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ قَالَ ابْنُ حَبِيبٍ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ وَرَجَبُ مُضَرَ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَلاَ تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي

Do you know which day is this? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. (The Prophet [may peace be upon him] kept silent) until we thought that he would give that another name. He said: Is it not the day of Nahr (Sacrifice) (10th of Dhu'l- Hijja)? We said: Messenger of Allah, yes. He (again) said: Which month is it? We said: Allah and His Messenger knows best. He said: Is it not Dhu'l-Hijja? We said: Messenger of Allah, yes. He said: Which city is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the narrator) said (that the Prophet kept silent until we thought that he would give it another name besides its (original) name. He said: Is it not Balda (the city of Mecca)? We said: Yes, Messenger of Allah. He (then) said: Verily your blood (lives) and your property and your honour are as sacred unto you as sacred is this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. Let him who is present convey it to one who is absent. He then turned his attention towards two multicoloured (black and white) rams and slaughtered them, and two goats, and distributed them amongst us.

لَمَّا كَانَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ قَعَدَ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَأَخَذَ إِنْسَانٌ بِخِطَامِهِ فَقَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ أَىَّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا قَالُوا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِيَوْمِ النَّحْرِ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِذِي الْحِجَّةِ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَىُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِالْبَلْدَةِ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا فَلْيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ قَالَ ثُمَّ انْكَفَأَ إِلَى كَبْشَيْنِ أَمْلَحَيْنِ فَذَبَحَهُمَا وَإِلَى جُزَيْعَةٍ مِنَ الْغَنَمِ فَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَنَا

[AI] "When that day came, the Prophet ﷺ sat on a camel, I do not know if it was a camel or a camel. A man took hold of its reins or said his bridle and said, 'What day is this?' We remained silent until we thought that he would give it a different name. He said, 'Isn't it the day of Sacrifice?' We said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then which month is this?' We remained silent until we thought that he would give it a different name. He said, 'Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijjah?' We said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then which city is this?' We remained silent until we thought that he would give it a different name. He said, 'Isn't it this city?' We said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Indeed, your blood, your property, and your honor are sacred among you like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. Behold! Let the witness inform the absent, perhaps the witness will convey it to one who is more aware."

لَمَّا كَانَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ قَعَدَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى بَعِيرٍ لَا أَدْرِي جَمَلٌ أَوْ نَاقَةٌ وَأَخَذَ إِنْسَانٌ بِخِطَامِهِ أَوْ قَالَ بِزِمَامِهِ فَقَالَ «أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟» قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟» قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟» قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحِجَّةِ؟» قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟» قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ الْبَلْدَةَ؟» قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَإِنَّ الشَّاهِدَ عَسَى أَنْ يُبَلِّغَ مَنْ هُوَ أَوْعَى مِنْهُ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said during the Farewell Pilgrimage, "O people, what day is this?" They said, "This is a forbidden day." He said, "What land is this?" They said, "A forbidden land." He said, "What month is this?" They said, "A forbidden month." He said, "Verily, your lives, your wealth, and your honor are sacred to you, just as this day of yours is sacred, in this land of yours, in this month of yours." Then he repeated it several times. Then he raised his head to the sky and said, "O Allah, have I conveyed the message?" Ibn Abbas said, "By Allah, it is indeed a testament to his Lord." Then he said, "So let the witness inform the absent ones, do not turn back after me as disbelievers, striking the necks of one another."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا هَذَا يَوْمٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ أَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا قَالُوا بَلَدٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا شَهْرٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ إِنَّ أَمْوَالَكُمْ وَدِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا ثُمَّ أَعَادَهَا مِرَارًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَقَالَ اللهُمَّ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ مِرَارًا قَالَ يَقُولُ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَاللهِ إِنَّهَا لَوَصِيَّةٌ إِلَى رَبِّهِ ﷻ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلا فَلْيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ

[AI] Our Messenger ﷺ addressed us on the Day of Sacrifice and said, "Which day is the greatest in sanctity?" They replied, "Our day is the greatest." He then asked, "Which month is the greatest in sanctity?" They said, "Our month is the greatest." He further asked, "Which city is the greatest in sanctity?" They responded, "Our city is the greatest." He then said, "Indeed, your lives and wealth are sacred to one another, just as this day is sacred in this month and this city. Have I conveyed the message?" They answered, "Yes." May Allah bear witness."

خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ فَقَالَ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ أَعْظَمُ حُرْمَةً؟ فَقَالَوا يَوْمُنَا هَذَا قَالَ فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ أَعْظَمُ حُرْمَةً؟ قَالَوا شَهْرُنَا هَذَا قَالَ أَيُّ بَلَدٍ أَعْظَمُ حُرْمَةً؟ قَالَوا بَلَدُنَا هَذَا قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ قَالَوا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Time has come back to its original state which it had on the day Allah created the Heavens and the Earth. The year is twelve months, four of which are sacred, three of them are in succession, namely Dhul-Qa'da, Dhul Hijja and Muharram, (the fourth being) Rajab Mudar which is between Juma'da (ath-thamj and Sha'ban. The Prophet ﷺ then asked, "Which month is this?" We said, "Allah and his Apostle know better." He kept silent so long that we thought that he would call it by a name other than its real name. He said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We said, "Yes." He said, "Which town is this?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He kept silent so long that we thought that he would call it t,y a name other than its real name. He said, "isn't it the town (of Mecca)?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "What day is today?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He kept silent so long that we thought that he would call it by a name other than its real name. He said, "Isn't it the day of Nahr?" We replied, "Yes." He then said, "Your blood, properties and honor are as sacred to one another as this day of yours in this town of yours in this month of yours. You will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Do not go astray after me by cutting the necks of each other. It is incumbent upon those who are present to convey this message to those who are absent, for some of those to whom it is conveyed may comprehend it better than some of those who have heard it directly." (Muhammad, the sub-narrator, on mentioning this used to say: The Prophet then said, "No doubt! Haven't I delivered (Allah's) Message (to you)? Haven't I delivered Allah's message (to you)?" (Using translation from Bukhārī 5550)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَطَبَ فِي حَجَّتِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَا إِنَّالزَّمَانَ قَدْ اسْتَدَارَ كَهَيْئَتِهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ اللهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ السَّنَةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ثَلَاثٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ ذُو الْقَعْدَةِ وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ وَالْمُحَرَّمُ وَرَجَبُ مُضَرَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَانَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَا أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحِجَّةِ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَتِ الْبَلْدَةَ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ قَالَ وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا وَسَتَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ فَيَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ أَلَا لَا تَرْجِعُنَّ بَعْدِي ضُلَّالًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ أَلَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ مِنْكُمْ فَلَعَلَّ مَنْ يُبَلَّغُهُ يَكُونُ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْ بَعْضِ مَنْ يَسْمَعُهُ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَقَدْ كَانَ ذَاكَ قَالَ كَانَ

Again, we remained silent, thinking that he would give it a different name. He then asked, "Is it not this city of yours?" Again, we replied, "Yes, it is." He said, "Indeed, your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred to one another, just as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. So let the witness inform the absent, for perhaps the witness may convey it to one who is more heedful than him." Muhammad said, "A man spoke up and said, 'Indeed, the message has been delivered.'"

لَمَّا كَانَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ قَعَدَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى بَعِيرٍ وَأَخَذَ رَجُلٌ بِزِمَامِهِ أَوْ بِخِطَامِهِ فَقَالَ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ يَوْمُكُمْ هَذَا؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِالنَّحْرِ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ شَهْرُكُمْ هَذَا؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِذِي الْحِجَّةِ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ بَلَدُكُمْ هَذَا؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِالْبَلْدَةِ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا فَلْيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَإِنَّ الشَّاهِدَ عَسَى أَنْ يُبَلِّغَهُ مَنْ هُوَ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْهُ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ قَدْ كَانَ ذَاكَ

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ delivered a sermon on the Day of Sacrifice while riding on his camel. He began speaking intermittently here and there, in front of each group of people. Then he asked, "Which day is this?" We remained silent, thinking that he would name it something other than its actual name. He then said, "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?" We replied, "Yes." He then asked, "Which month is this?" Again, we remained silent, thinking that he would name it something other than its actual name. He then said, "Is it not the month of Dhu al-Hijjah?" We replied, "Yes." He then asked, "Which city is this?" Once again, we remained silent, thinking that he would name it something other than its actual name. He then said, "Is it not the sacred city?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "Verily, your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day in this month in this city. Let the absent inform the absent, for perhaps the absent will be more attentive to it than the present."

خَطَبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ عَلَى نَاقَةٍ لَهُ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ يَتَكَلَّمُ هَاهُنَا مَرَّةً وَهَاهُنَا مَرَّةً عِنْدَ كُلِّ قَوْمٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ غَيْرَ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا بَلَى ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ غَيْرَ اسْمِهِ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحِجَّةِ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا بَلَى ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ غَيْرَ اسْمِهِ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْبَلْدَةَ الْحَرَامَ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ حَرَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ إِلَى أَنْ تَلْقَوْا رَبَّكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ مِنْكُمُ الْغَائِبَ فَلَعَلَّ الْغَائِبَ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنَ الشَّاهِدِ

The Prophet ﷺ delivered to us a sermon on the Day of Nahr. He said, "Do you know what is the day today?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He remained silent till we thought that he might give that day another name. He said, "Isn't it the Day of Nahr?" We said, "It is." He further asked, "Which month is this?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He remained silent till we thought that he might give it another name. He then said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied: "Yes! It is." He further asked, "What town is this?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know it better." He remained silent till we thought that he might give it another name. He then said, "Isn't it the forbidden (Sacred) town (of Mecca)?" We said, "Yes. It is." He said, "No doubt, your blood and your properties are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this town of yours, till the day you meet your Lord. No doubt! Haven't I conveyed Allah's message to you? They said, "Yes." He said, "O Allah! Be witness. So it is incumbent upon those who are present to convey it (this information) to those who are absent because the informed one might comprehend it (what I have said) better than the present audience, who will convey it to him. Beware! Do not renegade (as) disbelievers after me by striking the necks (cutting the throats) of one another." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1741)

خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ فَقَالَ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ أَوْ قَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ أَوْ قَالَ أَوَ تَدْرُونَ أَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ ذَاالْحِجَّةِ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ أَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَتِ الْبَلْدَةَ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ حَرَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا إِلَى يَوْمِ تَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَرُبَّ مُبَلَّغٍ أَوْعَى مِنْ سَامِعٍ أَلَا لَا تَرْجِعُنَّ بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ

[AI] I heard Abu Ghadiyah saying, "I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Abu Sa'id said, "I asked him, 'Did you pledge allegiance with your right hand?'" He replied, 'Yes.' They both mentioned in the narration that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us on the day of Al-Aqaba and said, 'O people, your blood and wealth are forbidden to each other until the Day you meet your Lord, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. Have I conveyed the message?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'O Allah, bear witness.' Then he said, 'Do not revert to disbelief after me by striking the necks of one another.

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا غَادِيةَ يَقُولُ بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ بِيَمِينِكَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَا جَمِيعًا فِي الْحَدِيثِ وَخَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ الْعَقَبَةِ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ إِلَى يَوْمِ تَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَا لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ

someone who heard the sermon of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the middle the days of tashrīq ˹toward the end of Ḥajj˺ narrated to me that he (the Prophet ﷺ) said, "O people! Your Lord is One and your father ˹Adam˺ is one. There is no preference of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab, and neither one of white skin over one of black skin, nor one of black skin over one of white skin, except through God-conscious righteousness. Have I delivered ˹the message˺?” They said, “The Messenger of Allah has delivered ˹the message˺."

Then he said, "Which day is this?" They said: A sacred day. Then he said, "Which month is this?" They said: A sacred month. He said, then he said, "Which city is this?", They said: A sacred city. He said, "˹Similarly,˺ Allah has made your lives and and your wealth sacred between you" – he said: and I don't know whether or not he said "your honor", "just like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. Have I delivered ˹the message˺?" They said: “The Messenger of Allah has delivered ˹the message˺."

He said, "The one present must deliver to the one absent."

حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ سَمِعَ خُطْبَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي وَسَطِ أَيَّامِ التَّشْرِيقِ فَقَالَ: «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ! أَلَا إِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ وَاحِدٌ، وَإِنَّ أَبَاكُمْ وَاحِدٌ۔ أَلَا لَا فَضْلَ لِعَرَبِيٍّ عَلَى عَجَمِيٍّ، وَلَا لِعَجَمِيٍّ عَلَى عَرَبِيٍّ، وَلَا أَحْمَرَ عَلَى أَسْوَدَ، وَلَا أَسْوَدَ عَلَى أَحْمَرَ، إِلَّا بِالتَّقْوَى۔ أَبَلَّغْتُ؟» قَالُوا: بَلَّغَ رَسُولُ اللهِ!

ثُمَّ قَالَ: «أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟» قَالُوا: يَوْمٌ حَرَامٌ۔ ثُمَّ قَالَ: «أَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟» قَالُوا: شَهْرٌ حَرَامٌ۔ قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَالَ: «أَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟» قَالُوا: بَلَدٌ حَرَامٌ۔ قَالَ: «فَإِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ حَرَّمَ بَيْنَكُمْ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ۔» قَالَ وَلَا أَدْرِي قَالَ أَوْ «أَعْرَاضَكُمْ» أَمْ لَا «كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا۔ أَبَلَّغْتُ؟» قَالُوا: بَلَّغَ رَسُولُ اللهِ! قَالَ: «لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ۔»

[AI] The permission of Abu Ghadiyah Al-Juhani was sought and Abd al-A'la said, "Let him in." So he was admitted and he had wounds on him. Then a man of tall stature struck him as if he does not belong to this Ummah. When he sat down, he said, "We used to consider Ammar ibn Yasir as one of our best." He said, "By Allah, I was in the Mosque of Quba when he said a word that if I had any helpers, I would have killed him." He said, "On the day of Siffin, he walked ahead of the troop on foot until he stabbed a man with a spear between the two sides, and he killed him. The crowd turned away from him, and the Divine Forgiveness repelled him. Then he struck him, and it was the head of Ammar ibn Yasir." He said, "Our servant says, 'I have never seen a man openly more misguided than him.'" Ibn Hajar remained silent about summarizing it.

الْآذِنُ هَذَا أَبُو غَادِيَةَ الْجُهَنِيُّ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى أَدْخِلُوهُ فَأُدْخِلَ وَعَلَيْهِ مُقَطَّعَاتٌ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ طُوَالٌ ضَرْبٌ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ كَأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ فَلَمَّا قَعَدَ قَالَ «كُنَّا نَعُدُّ عَمَّارَ بْنَ يَاسِرٍ مِنْ خِيَارِنَا» قَالَ «فَوَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَفِي مَسْجِدِ قُبَاءَ إِذَا هُوَ يَقُولُ وَذَكَرَ كَلِمَةً لَوْ وَجَدْتُ عَلَيْهِ أَعْوَانًا لَوَطِئْتُهُ حَتَّى أَقْتُلَهُ» قَالَ «فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ صِفِّينَ أَقْبَلَ يَمْشِي أَوَّلَ الْكَتِيبَةِ رَاجِلًا حَتَّى كَانَ بَيْنَ الصَّفَّيْنِ طَعَنَ رَجُلًا بِالرُّمْحِ فَصَرَعَهُ فَانْكَفَأَ الْمِغْفَرُ عَنْهُ فَضَرَبَهُ فَإِذَا رَأْسُ عَمَّارِ بْنِ يَاسِرٍ» قَالَ يَقُولُ مَوْلًى لَنَا لَمْ أَرَ رَجُلًا أَبْيَنَ ضَلَالَةً مِنْهُسكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

[AI] The Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ addressed them and said, "Which day is this?" They replied, "It is a sacred day." He said, "Which city is this?" They replied, "It is the sacred city." He said, "Which month is it?" They replied, "It is a sacred month." He said, "Verily, your lives, your wealth, and your honor are sacred upon you, just as the sanctity of this day, this month, and this city. The witness shall convey it to the absent one. Do not revert to disbelief after me, striking the necks of one another."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَطَبَهُمْ فَقَالَ «أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟» قَالُوا يَوْمٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ «فَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟» قَالُوا الْبَلَدُ الْحَرَامُ قَالَ «فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ؟» قَالُوا شَهْرٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ «فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ حَرَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا كَحُرْمَةِ شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا كَحُرْمَةِ بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ mentioned, he stood by his camel, and a person held its reins or, he said, its noseband, and he said, "What day is this?" We remained silent until we thought he would name it something other than its name. He said, "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice (Day of Nahr)?" We said, "Yes." He then said, "What month is this?" We remained silent until we thought he would name it something other than its name. He said, "Is it not Dhul-Hijjah?" We said, "Yes." He then said, "What town is this?" We remained silent until we thought he would name it something other than its name. He said, "Is it not the Sacred Town (al-Balad al-Haram)?" We said, "Yes." He then said, "Indeed, your blood, your property, and your honor are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours in this month of yours in this town of yours. Let those present convey it to those absent, for those who are absent may understand it better than those who are present."

ذَكَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَالَ وَقَفَ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَأَمْسَكَ إِنْسَانٌ بِخِطَامِهِ أَوْ قَالَ بِزِمَامِهِ فَقَالَ «أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ » فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟ » قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ » فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ بِذِي الْحِجَّةِ؟ » قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ » فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ الْبَلَدَ الْحَرَامِ» قُلْنَا بَلَى فَقَالَ «فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ حَرَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ مِنْكُمُ الْغَائِبَ فَإِنَّ الشَّاهِدَ يَبْلُغُ مَنْ هُوَ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْهُ»

[AI] Narrated Abu Bakrah: The Prophet ﷺ stood up on his camel and held its reins. A man held its noseband or bridle and asked, "Which day is this?" We remained silent until we thought that he might name it differently. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Is this not the day of sacrifice (Eid al-Adha)?" We replied, "Yes, it is." He then asked, "Which month is this?" Again, we remained silent until we thought that he might name it differently. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Is this not the month of Dhul-Hijjah?" We replied, "Yes, it is." He then asked, "Which land is this?" Again, we remained silent until we thought that he might name it differently. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Is this not the sacred land (Makkah)?" We replied, "Yes, it is." He said, "Then surely, the blood, wealth, and honor of every Muslim among you is as sacred as this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Let the witness among you convey (the message) to the absent one, for the witness may convey it to one who is more mindful of it than he is."

عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ ذَكَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَالَ وَقَفَ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَأَمْسَكَ إِنْسَانٌ بِخِطَامِهِ أَوْ قَالَ بِزِمَامِهِ فَقَالَ «أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا»؟ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ بِيَوْمِ النَّحْرِ»؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا»؟ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ بِذِي الْحِجَّةِ»؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا»؟ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ الْبَلَدَ الْحَرَامَ»؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ حَرَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ مِنْكُمُ الْغَائِبَ فَإِنَّ الشَّاهِدَ عَسَى يُبَلِّغُ مَنْ هُوَ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْهُ»

[AI] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “Indeed time has returned to its original state as it was on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive—Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and al-Muharram—and Rajab of Mudar, which is between Jumada and Sha‘ban.” Then he said, “Which month is this?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He fell silent until we thought he would name it by a name other than its own. He said, “Is it not Dhu al-Hijjah?” We said, “Yes.” He said, “Which land is this?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He fell silent until we thought he would name it by a name other than its own. He said, “Is it not this town?” We said, “Yes.” He said, “Which day is this?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?” We said, “Yes.” He said, “Indeed your blood and your wealth”—Muhammad said, “and I think he said, ‘and your honor’”—“are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours in this land of yours. And you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. So do not return after me astray, striking the necks of one another. Let those of you who are present convey it to those who are absent, for perhaps some who receive it may understand it better than some who heard it.” He said: Muhammad would, whenever he mentioned it, say, “Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth; it was indeed so.” Then he ﷺ said, “Have I conveyed (the message)? Have I conveyed (the message)?”

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ الزَّمَانَ قَدِ اسْتَدَارَ كَهَيْئَتِهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ السُّنَّةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ثَلَاثٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ ذُو الْقَعْدَةِ وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ وَالْمُحَرَّمُ وَرَجَبُ مُضَرَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَانَ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا»؟ قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحِجَّةِ؟ » قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ «أَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ » قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْبَلْدَةَ؟ » قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ «أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا»؟ قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟ » قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَأَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا وَسَتَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ فَيَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ أَلَا فَلَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي ضُلَّالًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ أَلَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ مِنْكُمُ الْغَائِبَ فَلَعَلَّ بَعْضَ مَنْ يَبْلُغُهُ يَكُونُ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْ بَعْضِ مَنْ سَمِعَهُ» قَالَ فَكَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ إِذَا ذَكَرَهُ يَقُولُ صَدَقَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ قَدْ كَانَ ذَاكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ ﷺ «أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ »

[AI] From the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Indeed, time has returned to its original state as it was on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive—Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and al-Muharram—and Rajab of (the tribe of) Mudar, which is between Jumada and Sha‘ban.”

Then he said: “Which month is this?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He remained silent until we thought he would call it by a name other than its own. He said: “Is it not Dhu al-Hijjah?” We said, “Yes.”

He said: “Which land is this?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He remained silent until we thought he would call it by a name other than its own. He said: “Is it not the Sacred Land?” We said, “Yes.”

He said: “Which day is this?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He remained silent until we thought he would call it by a name other than its own. He said: “Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?” We said, “Yes.”

He said: “Indeed, your blood and your wealth”—Muhammad said: and I think he said, “and your honor”—“are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. And you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. So do not return after me astray, striking the necks of one another. Let the one who is present convey to the one who is absent, for perhaps some to whom it reaches will understand it better than some who heard it. Have I conveyed (the message)?”

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ الزَّمَانَ قَدِ اسْتَدَارَ كَهَيْئَتِهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَالسُّنَّةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ثَلَاثَةٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ ذُو الْقَعْدَةِ وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ وَالْمُحَرَّمُ وَرَجَبُ مُضَرَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَانَ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ » قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحِجَّةِ» قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ » قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ الْبَلَدَ الْحَرَامَ؟ » قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ » قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟ » قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَأَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ حَرَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا وَسَتَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ فَيَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ فَلَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي ضُلَّالًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ أَلَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَلَعَلَّ بَعْضَ مَنْ يَبْلُغُهُ يَكُونُ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْ بَعْضِ مَنْ سَمِعَهُ أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ »

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ بِمِنًى فَقَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ ؟ قَالُوا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِاسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا ؟ قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِالْبَلْدَةِ ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا هَلْ بَلَغْتُ ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ قَالَ لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ مِنْكُمُ الْغَائِبَ فَإِنَّهُ رُبَّ مُبَلِّغٍ يُبَلِّغُهُ مَنْ هُوَ أَوْعَى مِنْهُ لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمَ حُرِقَ ابْنُ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ حِينَ حَرَقَهُ جَارِيَةُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ قَالَ أَشْرَفُوا عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرَةَ وَهُوَ فِي حَائِطٍ لَهُ فَقَالُوا هَذَا أَبُو بَكْرَةَ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ فَحَدَّثَتْنِي أُمِّي عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَوْ دَخَلُوا عَلَيَّ مَا بَهَشْتُ إِلَيْهِمْ بِقَصَبَةٍ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَاهُ بِهَذَا اللَّفْظِ إِلَّا قُرَّةُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ

[AI] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon during the Farewell Hajj and asked, "O people, what city is this?" They replied, "A sacred city." He then asked, "What month is this?" They replied, "A sacred month." He further asked, "What day is this?" They replied, "A sacred day." He said, "Behold, your lives, your properties, and your honors are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, and in this city of yours. Let those present inform those who are absent that they should not revert to disbelief after me, striking one another's necks."

أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ خَطَبَ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ فَقَالَ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟» قَالُوا بَلَدٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ «فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟» قَالُوا شَهْرٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ «فَأَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟» قَالُوا يَوْمٌ حَرَامٌ قَالَ «أَلَا إِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا كَشَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا كَحُرْمَةِ بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا فَلْيُبَلِّغْ شَاهِدُكُمْ غَائِبَكُمْ لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ»

[AI] It is said that this is called "Tarkheeh." They said to us, "Here is a man who has seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." So we went to a venerable sheikh and said, "Have you seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "Yes, and he wrote to me with this water and gave us a piece of skin containing the writing of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." So we asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "I am Al-Adaa ibn Khalid." We asked him, "What did you hear from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "I was beneath his camel on the day of Arafah, and it was grazing with its tether. He said, 'O people, which day is this? And which month is this? And which city is this?' We said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'Is this not a sacred month and a sacred city and a sacred day?' We said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'Know that your blood and your wealth and your honor are sacred to you like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours, until the day you meet your Lord. O Allah, have I conveyed the message?' O Allah, bear witness.'"

يُقَالُ لَهُ التَّرْحِيحُ قَالُوا لَنَا هَاهُنَا رَجُلٌ قَدْ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَيْنَا شَيْخًا كَبِيرًا قَالَ قُلْنَا رَأَيْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ وَكَتَبَ لِي بِهَذَا الْمَاءِ وَأَخْرَجَ إِلَيْنَا جِلْدَةً فِيهَا كِتَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ» فَقُلْنَا مَا اسْمُكَ؟ قَالَ الْعَدَّاءُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ قَالَ قُلْنَا فَمَا سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ كُنْتُ تَحْتَ نَاقَتِهِ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ وَهِيَ تَقْصَعُ بِجِرَّتِهَا فَقَالَ «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ وَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ وَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟» قَالَ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ هَذَا شَهْرٌ حَرَامٌ وَبَلَدٌ حَرَامٌ وَيَوْمٌ حَرَامٌ؟ ؟» قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «أَلَا إِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا إِلَى يَوْمِ تَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ اللهُمَّ هَلْ بَلَّغَتُ؟ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ»

[AI] Abdul A'la entered and there were cuts on him. There was a man with him, tall and beaten by men as if he was not from this Ummah. When he sat down, he said, "I have pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I said with my right hand." The man said, "Yes, we gave the pledge of allegiance on the day of Al-Aqaba." He then said, "O people, indeed your blood and your wealth are sacred upon you like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. Have I conveyed the message?" They said, "Yes." He said, "O Allah, bear witness." He then said, "Do not turn back as disbelievers after me, striking the necks of one another." He said, "And we used to count Ammar ibn Yasir among our best. When the day of Siffin came, he marched ahead of the first group, walking until he reached the Saffayn. Then a man stabbed him in his knee with a spear, causing him to stumble. The helmet fell off from him, and I saw that the head was that of Ammar's. Our leader said, 'Whose hand is it?' He said, 'I have not seen a man more clearly misguided than him who heard the words of the Prophet ﷺ and then killed Ammar.'"

عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى أَدْخِلُوهُ فَدَخَلَ وَعَلَيْهِ مُقَطَّعَاتٌ لَهُ رَجُلٌ طُوَالٌ ضَرْبٌ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ كَأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ فَلَمَّا أَنْ قَعَدَ قَالَ بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ بِيَمِينِكَ قَالَ نَعَمْ خَطَبَنَا يَوْمَ الْعَقَبَةِ فَقَالَ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَلَا إِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ» قَالَ «لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ» قَالَ وَكُنَّا نَعُدُّ عَمَّارَ بْنَ يَاسِرٍ مِنْ خِيَارِنَا قَالَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ صِفِّينَ أَقْبَلَ يَمْشِي أَوَّلَ الْكَتِيبَةِ رَاجِلًا حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ مِنَ الصَّفَّيْنِ طَعَنَ رَجُلًا فِي رُكْبَتِهِ بِالرُّمْحِ فَعَثَرَ فَانْكَفَأَ الْمِغْفَرُ عَنْهُ فَضَرَبْتُهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ رَأْسُ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ يَقُولُ مَوْلَى لَنَا «أَيُّ يَدٍ كَفَتَاهُ؟» قَالَ فَلَمْ أَرَ رَجُلًا أَبْيَنَ ضَلَالَةً عِنْدِي مِنْهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مَا سَمِعَ ثُمَّ قَتَلَ عَمَّارًا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon on the Day of Sacrifice and said, "Indeed, your blood and your wealth are sacred among yourselves like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours, until the day you meet your Lord. Have I not conveyed the message?" They said, "Yes." He said, "O Allah, bear witness." The witness among you will convey to the absent one, for perhaps the one being informed will understand better than the one hearing. Beware, do not turn back after me as disbelievers, striking the necks of one another."

خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا إِلَى يَوْمِ تَلْقَوْنَ رَبِّكُمْ أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ» يُبَلِّغُ الشَّاهِدُ مِنْكُمُ الْغَائِبَ فَرُبَّ مُبَلَّغٍ أَوْعَى مِنْ سَامِعٍ أَلَا لَا تَرْجِعُنَّ بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ

Once the Prophet ﷺ was riding his camel and a man was holding its rein. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is the day today?" We kept quiet, thinking that he might give that day another name. He said, "Isn't it the day of Nahr (slaughtering of the animals of sacrifice)" We replied, "Yes." He further asked, "Which month is this?" We again kept quiet, thinking that he might give it another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "Verily! Your blood, property and honor are sacred to one another (i.e. Muslims) like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours and in this city of yours. It is incumbent upon those who are present to inform those who are absent because those who are absent might comprehend (what I have said) better than the present audience." (Using translation from Bukhārī 67)

لَمَّا كَانَ ذَاكَ الْيَوْمُ قَعَدَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ فَقَالَ «أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟» قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ بِيَوْمِ النَّحْرِ؟» فَقُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟» قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ بِذِي الْحِجَّةِ؟» فَقُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَأَيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟» قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ بِالْبَلْدَةِ؟» فَقُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ «فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَإِنَّ الشَّاهِدَ عَسَى أَنْ يُبَلِّغَهُ مَنْ هُوَ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْهُ»

[AI] I was riding behind my father on the departure and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was delivering a sermon at the stone pillar. He said, "Praise be to Allah, we praise Him, seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness. We bear witness that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. I advise you to have Taqwa (consciousness of Allah) on every day I live." They said, "This day." He said, "Which month shall I sanctify?" They said, "This month." He said, "Which land shall I sanctify?" They said, "This land." He said, "Indeed, your blood and wealth are sacred to one another, as sacred as this day of yours in this month of yours in this land of yours."

كُنْتُ رِدْفَ أَبِي عَلَى عَجُزِ الرَّاحِلَةِ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ عِنْدَ الْجَمْرَةِ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أُوصِيكُمْ بِتَقْوَى اللهِ أِيُّ يَوْمٍ أُحَرِّمُ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا هَذَا قَالَ فَأِيُّ شَهْرٍ أُحَرِّمُ؟ قَالُوا هَذَا قَالَ فَأِيُّ بَلَدٍ أُحَرِّمُ؟ قَالُوا هَذَا الْبَلَدُ قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ حَرَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا

We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He remained silent till we thought that he might give it another name. He then said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied: "Yes! It is." He further asked, "What town is this?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know it better." He remained silent till we thought that he might give it another name. He then said, "Isn't it the forbidden (Sacred) town (of Mecca)?" We said, "Yes. It is." He said, "No doubt, your blood and your properties are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this town of yours, till the day you meet your Lord. No doubt! Haven't I conveyed Allah's message to you? They said, "Yes." He said, "O Allah! Be witness. So it is incumbent upon those who are present to convey it (this information) to those who are absent because the informed one might comprehend it (what I have said) better than the present audience, who will convey it to him. Beware! Do not renegade (as) disbelievers after me by striking the necks (cutting the throats) of one another." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1741)

خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ فَقَالَ أِيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأِيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَوَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحَجَّةِ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأِيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَتِ الْبَلْدَةَ الْحَرَامَ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا اللهُمَّ هَلْ بَلِّغْتُ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ مِنْكُمُ الْغَائِبَ فَرُبَّ مُبَلَّغٍ أَوْعَى مِنْ سَامِعٍ أَلَا لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Time has taken its original shape which it had when Allah created the Heavens and the Earth. The year is of twelve months, four of which are sacred, and out of these (four) three are in succession, i.e. Dhul-Qa'da, Dhul-Hijja and Al-Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab which is named after the Mudar tribe, between (the month of) Jumaida (ath-thania) and Sha'ban." Then the Prophet ﷺ asked, "Which is this month?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." On that the Prophet ﷺ kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied, "Yes." Then he said, "Which town is this?" "We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." On that he kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the town of Mecca?" We replied, "Yes, " Then he said, "Which day is today?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the day of An- Nahr (i.e. sacrifice)?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "So your blood, your properties, (The sub-narrator Muhammad said, 'I think the Prophet ﷺ also said: And your honor..) are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this city of yours, in this month of yours; and surely, you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Do not become infidels after me, cutting the throats of one another. It is incumbent on those who are present to convey this message (of mine) to those who are absent. May be that some of those to whom it will be conveyed will understand it better than those who have actually heard it." (The sub-narrator, Muhammad, on remembering that narration, used to say, "Muhammad spoke the truth!") He (i.e. Prophet) then added twice, "No doubt! Haven't I conveyed (Allah's Message) to you?" عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ الزَّمَانَ قَدِ اسْتَدَارَ كَهَيْئَتِهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ اللهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ السَّنَةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ثَلَاثَةٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ ذُو الْقَعْدَةِ وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ وَالْمُحَرَّمُ وَرَجَبٌ شَهْرُ مُضَرَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَانَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أِيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحِجَّةِ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأِيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْبَلْدَةَ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأِيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ حَرَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا وَسَتَلْقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ فَيَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ فَلَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي ضُلَّالًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ أَلَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَلَعَلَّ بَعْضُ مَنْ يَبْلُغُهُ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِنْ بَعْضِ مَنْ سَمِعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ لَمْ يَسُقِ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ مَتْنَهُ وَقَالَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِنَّ الزَّمَانَ قَدِ اسْتَدَارَ

[AI] When that day came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted his camel and stopped, then he said, "Do you know which day this is?" We remained silent until we saw that he would name it something other than its actual name. He then said, "Is it not the day of sacrifice?" We replied, "Yes." Then he asked, "Do you know which month this is?" Again, we remained silent until we realized he would name it something other than its actual name. He then said, "Is it not the month of Dhul-Hijjah?" We replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." Then he asked, "Do you know which land this is?" Again, we remained silent until we realized he would name it something other than its actual name. He then said, "Is it not the city?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "Verily, your wealth, honor, and blood are sanctified among you just like the sanctity of this day of yours in this month of yours in this land of yours. Behold! Let him who is present convey the message to him who is absent, for perhaps the informed is more comprehending than the listener. Then he urged his camel towards the spoils and began to distribute them among the two men who had brought the sheep and the three men who had brought the camels.

لَمَّا كَانَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ رَكِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَاقَتَهُ ثُمَّ وَقَفَ فَقَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ أِيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى رَأَيْنَا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى ثُمَّ قَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ أِيُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى رَأَيْنَا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ ذَا الْحِجَّةِ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ أِيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ فَسَكَتْنَا حَتَّى رَأَيْنَا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ سِوَى اسْمِهِ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْبَلْدَةَ؟ فَقُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ أَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ وَدِمَاءَكُمْ حَرَامٌ بَيْنَكُمْ مِثْلُ يَوْمِكُمْ فِي مِثْلِ شَهْرِكُمْ فِي مِثْلِ بَلَدِكُمْ أَلَا لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَرُبَّ مُبَلَّغٍ هُوَ أَوْعَى مِنْ سَامِعٍ ثُمَّ مَالَ عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ إِلَى غُنَيْمَاتٍ فَجَعَلَ يَقْسِمُهَا بَيْنَ الرَّجُلَيْنِ الشَّاةُ وَالثَّلَاثَةِ الشَّاةُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ addressed the people in Mina and said, "Do you know what day is today?" They replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He remained silent until we thought he would name it something else. Then he said, "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?" They replied, "Yes." He asked, "And which place is this?" They replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Is it not in the Haram (sacred land)?" They replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Verily, your blood, your wealth, your honor, and your sacred rites in this month of yours are as sacred as this day of yours in this city of yours. Have I conveyed the message?" They replied, "Yes." He said, "O Allah, bear witness." Then he repeated it three times, "O Allah, bear witness."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ بِمِنًى فَقَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ أِيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَسَكَتْ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ أِيُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ بِالْبَلَدِ يَعْنِي الْحَرَامَ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ وَأَبْشَارَكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِي شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا أَلَا هَلْ بَلَّغَتُ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ لِيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ فَإِنَّهُ رُبَّ مُبَلِّغٍ يُبَلِّغُ مَنْ هُوَ أَوْعَى لَهُ فَكَانَ كَذَلِكَ وَقَالَ أَلَا لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِي كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ

[AI] “Indeed, time has returned to its original state as it was on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive—Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and al-Muharram—and Rajab of Mudar, which is between Jumada and Sha‘ban. Which month is this? Is it not Dhu al-Hijjah?” They said, “Yes.” “Which land is this? Is it not the Sacred Land?” They said, “Yes.” “Which day is this? Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?” They said, “Yes.” He said: “Then indeed your blood, your wealth, and your honor are inviolable to you, like the inviolability of this day of yours in this land of yours in this month of yours. And you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. So do not return after me astray, striking the necks of one another. Let those who are present convey to those who are absent, for perhaps some who receive it will comprehend it better than some who heard it. Have I conveyed (the message)?””

"إِنَّ الزَّمَانَ قَدْ اسْتَدَارَ كَهَيئَتِهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ الله السمواتِ والأَرْضَ. السَّنَةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شهْرًا، مِنْها أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ، ثلاثَةٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ: ذو الْقَعْدَةَ، وَذو الْحجَّةِ، والْمُحَرَّمُ، وَرَجَبُ مُضَرَ الَّذي بَينَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَانَ، أَيُّ شَهْر هَذَا ؟ أَلَيسَ ذَا الْحجَّةِ؟ قالوا: بَلَى. أَيُّ بَلَد هَذَا؟ أَلَيسَ الْبَلْدَةَ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى، أَيُّ يَوْم هَذا؟ أَلَيسَ يَوْمَ النَّحْر؟ قَالُوا: بَلَى قَال: فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكمْ، وَأَمْوَالكُمْ، وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا في بَلَدِكُمْ هَذا في شَهْرِكُمْ هَذا، وَسَتَلقَوْنَ ربَّكُمْ فَيَسْأَلُكُم عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ، أَلا فَلَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِى ضُلَّالًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُم رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ أَلا لِيُبَلِّغ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ، فَلَعَلَّ بَعْض مَنْ يَبْلُغُهُ أَن يَكُونَ أَوْعَى لَهُ مِن بَعْضِ مَنْ سَمِعَهُ، أَلا هَل بلَّغْتُ؟ ".

"أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَيُّ شَهْرٍ أَحْرَمُ؟ قالُوا: هَذَا، قَال: أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ فَأَيُّ بَلَد أَحْرَمُ ؟ قَالُوا: هَذَا، قَال: فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأَمْوَالكُمْ، وأَعْرَاضَكُم مُحَرَّمَةٌ عَلَيكُمْ كُحرَمَةِ يَوْمِكم هَذَا في شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا في بلَدِكُمْ هَذَا إِلى يَوْمِ تَلقَوْنَ رَبَكُمْ، هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ اللَّهُمَ اشْهَدْ، أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ليُبَلغ الشَّاهِدُ الغَائِبَ".

"الحمدُ لله نَحمدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُه وَنسْتَغْفرُه وَنَشْهَدُ أن مُحَمدًا عَبدُهُ ورسُولُهُ (بلفظ طب : وإني) أوصِيكُمْ بِتَقْوَى الله أَى يَومٍ أحرِّمُ؟ ... قالوا: هذا، فأى شَهْر أحَرِّمُ؟ قالوا: هذا الشهر، قال: فأيَّ بلد أحرمُ؟ قالوا: هذا البلدَ. قال: فإنَّ دماءَكمْ وأمْوَالكُمْ حَرامٌ عليكُمْ كَحُرْمةِ يَومِكُمْ هَذا في شَهْرِكُم هذَا في بلدِكُم هَذا، هَلْ بَلَّغْت، اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ".

"يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ: أَىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: هَذَا يَوْمٌ حَرَامٌ، قَالَ: فَأَىُّ بَلَد هَذَا؟ قَالُوا (*): هَذَا بَلَدٌ حَرَامٌ، قَالَ: فَأَىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: هَذَا شَهْرٌ حَرَامٌ، قَالَ: فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ، وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ، وأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكمْ حَرَامٌ، كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا فِى بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا، فِى شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا، اللَّهُمَّ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ، اللَّهُمَّ هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ ! فَلْيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الغَائِبَ، لا تَرْجِعْوا بَعْدِى كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ".

" عَنْ مَخْشِىِّ بْنِ حُجَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ: أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ خَطَبَ فِى حَجَّةِ الوَدَاعِ، فَقَالَ: أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ: أَىُّ بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: بَلَدٌ حَرَامٌ، قَالَ: فَأىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا شَهْرٌ حَرَامٌ، قَالَ: فَأىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ، قَالَ: أَلَا إنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ، وَأَمْوَالَكُمْ، وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ، كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا، كحُرْمَةِ شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا، فَليُبَلغْ شَاهِدُكُمْ غَائِبَكُمْ، لَا تَرْجِعُوا بَعْدِى كُفَّارًا يَضْرِبُ بَعْضُكُمْ رِقَابَ بَعْضٍ".

"عَنْ وَابِصَةَ قَالَ: شَهِدَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ في حَجَّةِ الوَدَاع وَهُو يَقُولُ: ايُّهَا النَّاسُ: أىُّ يَوْمٍ أَحْرمُ؟ قَالَ النَّاسُ: هَذَا اليَوم وَهُوَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ، قَالَ: أَىُّ شَهْرٍ أَحْرَمُ لله قَالَ النَّاسُ: هَذَا الشَّهْر، قَالَ: أَىُّ بَلَدٍ أحْرَمُ؟ قَالُوا: هذِهِ البَلدَة، قَالَ: فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُم وَأمْوَالَكُمْ وَأَعْرَاضَكُمْ مُحَرَّمَة عَلَيْكُمْ، كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا في شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا في بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا إلى يَوْم تَلقَوْنَهُ، ألَا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ قَالَ النَّاسُ: نَعَمْ، فَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ إلى السَّمَاءِ: اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ يَقُولُهَا ثَلاثا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: لِيُبَلِّغ الشَّاهِدُ الغَائِبَ".

"عَنْ وَابِصَةَ أَنَّ النَبِىَّ ﷺ خَطَبَهُمْ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ فَقَالَ أيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّى لَا أرَانِى وَإياكُمْ نَجْتَمِعُ هَذَا المجِلسَ أبَدًا فَأىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: عَرَفَة، قَالَ: فَأىُّ بَلَدٍ هَذا؟ قَالُوا: البَلَدُ الحَرَامُ، قَالَ: فَأىُّ شَهْرٍ هذا؟ قَالُوا: الشَّهْرُ الحَرَامُ، قَالَ: فَإِنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ وَأمْوَالَكُمْ وَأعْرَاضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَام كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا في بَلَدِكُمْ هَذَا، في شَهْرِكُمْ هَذا هَلْ بَلَّغْتُ؟ : اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ".

"عَنْ أَبِى بَكْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِىِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: أىُّ شَهْرٍ هَذَا؟ قُلنَا: الله وَرسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْرِ اسْمِهِ، قَالَ: أَلَيْسَ ذَا الحِجَّةِ؟ قُلنَا: بَلَى قَالَ: فَأى بَلَدٍ هَذَا؟ قُلنَا: الله وَرسُولُهُ أعْلَمُ، فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَا أنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْر اسْمِهِ قَالَ: ألَيْسَ البَلَد الحَرَام؟ قُلنَا: بَلَى، قَالَ: أَىُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قَلنَا: الله وَرَسُولُهُ أعْلَمُ فَسَكَتَ حَتَى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُسَمِّيهِ بِغَيْر اسْمِهِ، قَالَ: ألَيْسَ يوم النَّحْر، قُلنَا: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ الله قَالَ: فإنَّ دِمَاءَكُمْ، وَأمْوَالَكُمْ، وَأَعْراضَكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَرَامٌ كَحُرْمَةِ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا في شَهْرِكُمْ هَذَا وَسَتَلقَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ فَيَسْألُكُمْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ" .
