I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "While I was sleeping, I saw that a cup full of milk was brought to me and I drank of it and gave the remaining of it to ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab." They asked. What have you interpreted (about the dream)? O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" The Prophet ﷺ said. "(It is Religious) knowledge." (Using translation from Bukhārī 7032)
I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "While I was sleeping, I saw a bowl full of milk was brought to me and I drank of it (to my fill) till I noticed its wetness flowing (in my body). Then I gave the remaining of it to ʿUmar." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What have you interpreted (about the dream)? He said, "(It is Religious) knowledge." (See Hadith No. 134) (Using translation from Bukhārī 7027)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever Allah wishes good for, He gives him understanding of the religion. Indeed, I am merely a distributor, and it is Allah who gives." Abu Abdur-Rahman disagreed with him. Yunus narrated it from Az-Zuhri, from Humaid bin Abdul Rahman, from Abu Hurairah.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not wish to be like anyone except in two cases. (The first is) A person, whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously; (the second is) the one whom Allah has given wisdom (the Holy Qur'an) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others." (Fath-al-Bari page 177 Vol. 1) (Using translation from Bukhārī 73)

I said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Who will be the luckiest person, who will gain your intercession on the Day of Resurrection?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: O Abu Huraira! "I have thought that none will ask me about it before you as I know your longing for the (learning of) Hadiths. The luckiest person who will have my intercession on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who said sincerely from the bottom of his heart "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah." (Using translation from Bukhārī 99)
28.4 [Machine] The example of someone who understands the religion of Allah Almighty
The similitude of that guidance and knowledge with which Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, has sent me is that of rain falling upon the earth. There is a good piece of land which receives the rainfall (eagerly) and as a result of it there is grown in it herbage and grass abundantly. Then there is a land hard and barren which retains water and the people derive benefit from it and they drink it and make the animals drink. Then there is another land which is barren. Neither water is retained in it, nor is the grass grown in it. And that is the similitude of the first one who develops the understanding of the religion of Allah and it becomes a source of benefit to him with which Allah sent me. (The second one is that) who acquires the knowledge of religion and imparts it to others. (Then the other type is) one who does not pay attention to (the revealed knowledge) and thus does not accept guidance of Allah with which I have been sent. (Using translation from Muslim 2282)
28.5 [Machine] The journey in search of knowledge.
I said to Ibn ʿAbbas, "Nauf Al-Bukah claims that Moses, the companion of Al-Khadir was not Moses (the prophet) of the children of Israel, but some other Moses." Ibn ʿAbbas said, "Allah's enemy (i.e. Nauf) has told a lie. Ubai bin Kaʿb told us that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Once Moses stood up and addressed Bani Israel. He was asked who was the most learned man amongst the people. He said, 'I.' Allah admonished him as he did not attribute absolute knowledge to Him (Allah). So, Allah said to him, 'Yes, at the junction of the two seas there is a Slave of Mine who is more learned than you.' Moses said, 'O my Lord! How can I meet him?' Allah said, 'Take a fish and put it in a large basket and you will find him at the place where you will lose the fish.' Moses took a fish and put it in a basket and proceeded along with his (servant) boy, Yushaʿ bin Noon, till they reached the rock where they laid their heads (i.e. lay down). Moses slept, and the fish, moving out of the basket, fell into the sea. It took its way into the sea (straight) as in a tunnel. Allah stopped the flow of water over the fish and it became like an arch (the Prophet ﷺ pointed out this arch with his hands). They travelled the rest of the night, and the next day Moses said to his boy (servant), 'Give us our food, for indeed, we have suffered much fatigue in this journey of ours.' Moses did not feel tired till he crossed that place which Allah had ordered him to seek after. His boy (servant) said to him, 'Do you know that when we were sitting near that rock, I forgot the fish, and none but Satan caused me to forget to tell (you) about it, and it took its course into the sea in an amazing way?.' So there was a path for the fish and that astonished them. Moses said, 'That was what we were seeking after.' So, both of them retraced their footsteps till they reached the rock. There they saw a man Lying covered with a garment. Moses greeted him and he replied saying, 'How do people greet each other in your land?' Moses said, 'I am Moses.' The man asked, 'Moses of Bani Israel?' Moses said, 'Yes, I have come to you so that you may teach me from those things which Allah has taught you.' He said, 'O Moses! I have some of the Knowledge of Allah which Allah has taught me, and which you do not know, while you have some of the Knowledge of Allah which Allah has taught you and which I do not know.' Moses asked, 'May I follow you?' He said, 'But you will not be able to remain patient with me for how can you be patient about things which you will not be able to understand?' (Moses said, 'You will find me, if Allah so will, truly patient, and I will not disobey you in aught.') So, both of them set out walking along the sea-shore, a boat passed by them and they asked the crew of the boat to take them on board. The crew recognized Al-Khadir and so they took them on board without fare. When they were on board the boat, a sparrow came and stood on the edge of the boat and dipped its beak once or twice into the sea. Al-Khadir said to Moses, 'O Moses! My knowledge and your knowledge have not decreased Allah's Knowledge except as much as this sparrow has decreased the water of the sea with its beak.' Then suddenly Al-Khadir took an adze and plucked a plank, and Moses did not notice it till he had plucked a plank with the adze. Moses said to him, 'What have you done? They took us on board charging us nothing; yet you I have intentionally made a hole in their boat so as to drown its passengers. Verily, you have done a dreadful thing.' Al-Khadir replied, 'Did I not tell you that you would not be able to remain patient with me?' Moses replied, 'Do not blame me for what I have forgotten, and do not be hard upon me for my fault.' So the first excuse of Moses was that he had forgotten. When they had left the sea, they passed by a boy playing with other boys. Al-Khadir took hold of the boys head and plucked it with his hand like this. (Sufyan, the sub narrator pointed with his fingertips as if he was plucking some fruit.) Moses said to him, "Have you killed an innocent person who has not killed any person? You have really done a horrible thing." Al-Khadir said, "Did I not tell you that you could not remain patient with me?' Moses said "If I ask you about anything after this, don't accompany me. You have received an excuse from me.' Then both of them went on till they came to some people of a village, and they asked its inhabitant for wood but they refused to entertain them as guests. Then they saw therein a wall which was just going to collapse (and Al Khadir repaired it just by touching it with his hands). (Sufyan, the sub-narrator, pointed with his hands, illustrating how Al-Khadir passed his hands over the wall upwards.) Moses said, "These are the people whom we have called on, but they neither gave us food, nor entertained us as guests, yet you have repaired their wall. If you had wished, you could have taken wages for it." Al-Khadir said, "This is the parting between you and me, and I shall tell you the explanation of those things on which you could not remain patient." The Prophet ﷺ added, "We wished that Moses could have remained patient by virtue of which Allah might have told us more about their story. (Sufyan the sub-narrator said that the Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on Moses! If he had remained patient, we would have been told further about their case.") [Machine] He married the daughter of Abi Ihab, and a woman from the people of Mecca came to claim that she had breastfed both of them. The people of the girl denied it when asked. So, I rode to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was in Medina, and I mentioned this to him. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I asked the people of the girl, and they denied it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "How is it possible when it has been mentioned? How is it possible when it has been mentioned?" So, he separated from her, and she married someone else.

Abu Shuraih said, "When ʿAmr bin Saʿid was sending the troops to Mecca (to fight ʿAbdullah bin Az- Zubair) I said to him, 'O chief! Allow me to tell you what the Prophet ﷺ said on the day following the conquests of Mecca. My ears heard and my heart comprehended, and I saw him with my own eyes, when he said it. He glorified and praised Allah and then said, "Allah and not the people has made Mecca a sanctuary. So anybody who has belief in Allah and the Last Day (i.e. a Muslim) should neither shed blood in it nor cut down its trees. If anybody argues that fighting is allowed in Mecca as Messenger of Allah ﷺ did fight (in Mecca), tell him that Allah gave permission to His Apostle, but He did not give it to you. The Prophet ﷺ added: Allah allowed me only for a few hours on that day (of the conquest) and today (now) its sanctity is the same (valid) as it was before. So it is incumbent upon those who are present to convey it (this information) to those who are absent." Abu- Shuraih was asked, "What did ʿAmr reply?" He said ʿAmr said, "O Abu Shuraih!
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: May Allah brighten a man who hears a tradition from us, gets it by heart and passes it on to others. Many a bearer of knowledge conveys it to one who is more versed than he is; and many a bearer of knowledge is not versed in it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3660)

I used to sit with Ibn 'Abbas and he made me sit on his sitting place. He requested me to stay with him in order that he might give me a share from his property. So I stayed with him for two months. Once he told (me) that when the delegation of the tribe of 'Abdul Qais came to the Prophet, the Prophet ﷺ asked them, "Who are the people (i.e. you)? (Or) who are the delegate?" They replied, "We are from the tribe of Rabi'a." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to them, "Welcome! O people (or O delegation of 'Abdul Qais)! Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We cannot come to you except in the sacred month and there is the infidel tribe of Mudar intervening between you and us. So please order us to do something good (religious deeds) so that we may inform our people whom we have left behind (at home), and that we may enter Paradise (by acting on them)." Then they asked about drinks (what is legal and what is illegal). The Prophet ﷺ ordered them to do four things and forbade them from four things. He ordered them to believe in Allah Alone and asked them, "Do you know what is meant by believing in Allah Alone?" They replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "It means: 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Messenger of Allah ﷺ. 2. To offer prayers perfectly 3. To pay the Zakat (obligatory charity) 4. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan. 5. And to pay Al-Khumus (one fifth of the booty to be given in Allah's Cause). Then he forbade them four things, namely, Hantam, Dubba,' Naqir Ann Muzaffat or Muqaiyar; (These were the names of pots in which Alcoholic drinks were prepared) (The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the container of wine and he meant the wine itself). The Prophet ﷺ further said (to them): "Memorize them (these instructions) and convey them to the people whom you have left behind." (Using translation from Bukhārī 53)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon on the day of sacrifice, saying, "Verily, your blood and your wealth are sacred among you, just as this day of yours is sacred in this month of yours, in this land of yours, until the day you meet your Lord. Behold, have I conveyed (the message)?" They replied, "Yes." He said, "O Allah, bear witness. Let the one who is present convey (the message) to the one who is absent, for perhaps the one who receives the message will better comprehend it than the one who hears it." This is a summary.
Once the Prophet ﷺ was riding his camel and a man was holding its rein. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is the day today?" We kept quiet, thinking that he might give that day another name. He said, "Isn't it the day of Nahr (slaughtering of the animals of sacrifice)" We replied, "Yes." He further asked, "Which month is this?" We again kept quiet, thinking that he might give it another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "Verily! Your blood, property and honor are sacred to one another (i.e. Muslims) like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours and in this city of yours. It is incumbent upon those who are present to inform those who are absent because those who are absent might comprehend (what I have said) better than the present audience."
When Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on his death-bed and in the house there were some people among whom was ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Come, let me write for you a statement after which you will not go astray." ʿUmar said, "The Prophet ﷺ is seriously ill and you have the Qur'an; so the Book of Allah is enough for us." The people present in the house differed and quarrelled. Some said "Go near so that the Prophet ﷺ may write for you a statement after which you will not go astray," while the others said as ʿUmar said. When they caused a hue and cry before the Prophet, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Go away!" Narrated 'Ubaidullah: Ibn ʿAbbas used to say, "It was very unfortunate that Messenger of Allah ﷺ was prevented from writing that statement for them because of their disagreement and noise." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5669)

Thursday! And how great that Thursday was! The ailment of Messenger of Allah ﷺ became worse (on Thursday) and he said, fetch me something so that I may write to you something after which you will never go astray." The people (present there) differed in this matter, and it was not right to differ before a prophet. Some said, "What is wrong with him ? (Do you think ) he is delirious (seriously ill)? Ask him ( to understand his state )." So they went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him again. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave me, for my present state is better than what you call me for." Then he ordered them to do three things. He said, "Turn the pagans out of the 'Arabian Peninsula; respect and give gifts to the foreign delegations as you have seen me dealing with them." (Saʿid bin Jubair, the sub-narrator said that Ibn ʿAbbas kept quiet as rewards the third order, or he said, "I forgot it.") (See Hadith No. 116 Vol. 1) (Using translation from Bukhārī 4431)

When Allah gave victory to His Apostle over the people of Mecca, Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up among the people and after glorifying Allah, said, "Allah has prohibited fighting in Mecca and has given authority to His Apostle and the believers over it, so fighting was illegal for anyone before me, and was made legal for me for a part of a day, and it will not be legal for anyone after me. Its game should not be chased, its thorny bushes should not be uprooted, and picking up its fallen things is not allowed except for one who makes public announcement for it, and he whose relative is murdered has the option either to accept a compensation for it or to retaliate." Al-ʿAbbas said, "Except Al-Idhkhir, for we use it in our graves and houses." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Except Al-Idhkhir." Abu Shah, a Yemenite, stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Get it written for me." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Write it for Abu Shah." (The sub-narrator asked Al-Auza'i): What did he mean by saying, "Get it written, O Allah's Apostle?" He replied, "The speech which he had heard from Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2434)

Once I came riding a she-ass and had (just) attained the age of puberty. Messenger of Allah ﷺ was offering the prayer at Mina. There was no wall in front of him and I passed in front of some of the row while they were offering their prayers. There I let the she-ass loose to graze and entered the row, and nobody objected to it. (Using translation from Bukhārī 76)

You people say that Abu Huraira tells many narrations from Messenger of Allah ﷺ and you also wonder why the emigrants and Ansar do not narrate from Messenger of Allah ﷺ as Abu Huraira does. My emigrant brothers were busy in the market while I used to stick to Messenger of Allah ﷺ content with what fills my stomach; so I used to be present when they were absent and I used to remember when they used to forget, and my Ansari brothers used to be busy with their properties and I was one of the poor men of Suffa. I used to remember the narrations when they used to forget. No doubt, Messenger of Allah ﷺ once said, "Whoever spreads his garment till I have finished my present speech and then gathers it to himself, will remember whatever I will say." So, I spread my colored garment which I was wearing till Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished his saying, and then I gathered it to my chest. So, I did not forget any of that narrations. People say that I have narrated many Hadiths (The Prophet's narration). Had it not been for two verses in the Qur'an, I would not have narrated a single Hadith, and the verses are: "Verily those who conceal the clear sign and the guidance which We have sent down . . . (up to) Most Merciful." (2:159-160). And no doubt our Muhajir (emigrant) brothers used to be busy in the market with their business (bargains) and our Ansari brothers used to be busy with their property (agriculture). But I (Abu Huraira) used to stick to Messenger of Allah ﷺ contented with what will fill my stomach and I used to attend that which they used not to attend and I used to memorize that which they used not to memorize. Abu Huraira said, "You people claim that Abu Huraira narrates many narrations of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Anyhow) with Allah will be our appointment. I was a poor man, and used to stick to Messenger of Allah ﷺ contented with what will fill my stomach, and the Muhajirin (emigrants) used to be busy trading in the markets, and the Ansar used to be busy looking after their properties. So I spread my garment which I was wearing; and by Him Who sent Muhammad with the Truth, ever since, I have never forgotten whatever I heard from him (the Prophet)" (See, Hadith No. 119, Vol. 1) (Using translation from Bukhārī 7354)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and sat with us, so we fell silent. He said, "Continue with what you were doing." Zaid said, "I had already made supplication, as well as my companions, before Abu Huraira, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ confirmed our supplications. Then Abu Huraira made supplication saying, 'O Allah, I ask You for the same thing that my two companions asked for, and I ask You for knowledge that is not forgotten.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Ameen.' So we said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we also ask Allah for knowledge that is not forgotten.' He said, 'The young boy from Daws has surpassed you in that.'"

Some people laughed, so the Messenger said to them, "Are you laughing that an ignorant person is asking a knowledgeable one?" Then he sat for a little while and said, "Where is the one who asked about the clothing of Paradise?" The man said, "Here I am, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger said, "No, rather its fruits are split open from it." He repeated this three times.

Then the man stood up for the second time and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ frowned more intensely this time. Then the man stood up for the third time and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Woe to you! What have you prepared for it?" He replied, "Stone and there is no harm." Whenever someone asked him about doing something before something else, he would say, "Do it and there is no harm."
A man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Inform me of a deed which will make me enter Paradise." The people said, "What is the matter with him? What is the matter with him?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He has something to ask (what he needs greatly)." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), (In order to enter Paradise) you should worship Allah and join none in worship with Him: You should offer prayers perfectly, give obligatory charity (Zakat), and keep good relations with your Kith and kin." He then said, "Leave it!" (The sub-narrator said, "It seems that the Prophet ﷺ was riding his she camel." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5983)

I heard Usama bin Sharik saying: I came to the Prophet ﷺ, and his companions we as if they birds were perched on their heads (i.e. they were still and attentive).
Do not turn unbelievers after me ; one of you may strike the neck of the other. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4686)

[Machine] While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , a man came forward with a pleasant face, good features, and a pleasant fragrance. We were amazed by his good looks, features, and fragrance, so he greeted the Prophet ﷺ and then stood up and asked, "Can I come closer, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Yes." So he came closer, then stood up and asked again, "Can I come closer, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Yes." He came even closer until his thigh was next to the thigh of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his leg was next to his leg. Then he asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is faith?" He replied, "To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Day of Judgment, and destiny, both good and bad." He said, "You have spoken the truth." We were amazed by his statement that he spoke the truth to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Then he asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" He replied, "To testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, give Zakat, fast in Ramadan, perform Hajj, and to cleanse oneself from impurity." He said, "You have spoken the truth." We were amazed by his affirmation of the Messenger of Allah's statement. Then he asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Ihsan?" He replied, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion, then know that He sees you." He said, "You have spoken the truth." We were amazed by his affirmation of the Messenger of Allah's statement. Then he turned back and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Go after the man." We searched for him but couldn't find him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "This was Gabriel who came to teach you your religion, that whenever he came to me before, I recognized him except in this form."

[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell behind and we caught up with him and the prayer had become difficult for us. Then a caller called out from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Woe to the stragglers from the Fire!"
Once the Prophet ﷺ remained behind us in a journey. He joined us while we were performing ablution for the prayer which was over-due. We were just passing wet hands over our feet (and not washing them properly) so the Prophet ﷺ addressed us in a loud voice and said twice or thrice: "Save your heels from the fire." (Using translation from Bukhārī 60)
