ibnhibban:4793bAbū Zumayl > Ibn ʿAbbās

[Machine] While a Muslim man was following in the footsteps of a polytheist man, he heard a whip strike above him and the sound of a horseman above him saying, "I am Hudhum." He looked at the polytheist man in front of him and saw him fall flat on his face, with his nose broken and his face cut like a whip strike. That became green like vegetation. Al-Ansari came and informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have spoken the truth, that is a result of the help from the third heaven." Thus, they killed seventy of the polytheists and took seventy as captives. Ibn 'Abbas said, "When they took the captives, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, 'What do you think of these captives?' Abu Bakr said, 'O Messenger of Allah, they are the kinsfolk and families. I believe we should accept ransom from them, which will give us strength against the disbelievers, and perhaps Allah will guide them to Islam.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'What do you think, O son of Al-Khattab?' I said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I do not see what Abu Bakr sees, but I think we should cut off their heads and make Ali bin Abi Talib kill 'Uqayl, and I should kill so-and-so, a relative of 'Umar, for they are the leaders of disbelief and the pillars of idolatry.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approved of what Abu Bakr said, but did not approve of what I said. When it was morning, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and saw him and Abu Bakr weeping. I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, please tell me what made you and your friend weep?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I weep for what has been suggested to my Companions, that they may accept ransom from the captives. Allah has revealed the Ayah, "It is not for a Prophet that he should have prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he had made a great slaughter (among his enemies) in the land... This is so because Allah desires to test and purify the believers. And so He will punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the idolaters, men and women, who think evil thoughts about Allah. For them is a disgraceful torment, and Allah will inflict on them a humiliating torment." Thus, Allah allowed the booty.'"

(the wife of the Prophet) Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while Abu Bakr was at a place called As-Sunah (Al-'Aliya) 'Umar stood up and said, "By Allah! Messenger of Allah ﷺ is not dead!" 'Umar (later on) said, "By Allah! Nothing occurred to my mind except that." He said, "Verily! Allah will resurrect him and he will cut the hands and legs of some men." Then Abu Bakr came and uncovered the face of Messenger of Allah ﷺ, kissed him and said, "Let my mother and father be sacrificed for you, (O Messenger of Allah ﷺ), you are good in life and in death. By Allah in Whose Hands my life is, Allah will never make you taste death twice." Then he went out and said, "O oath-taker! Don't be hasty." When Abu Bakr spoke, 'Umar sat down. Abu Bakr praised and glorified Allah and said, No doubt! Whoever worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever worshipped Allah, then Allah is Alive and shall never die." Then he recited Allah's Statement.:-- "(O Muhammad) Verily you will die, and they also will die." (39.30) He also recited:-- "Muhammad is no more than an Apostle; and indeed many Apostles have passed away, before him, If he dies Or is killed, will you then Turn back on your heels? And he who turns back On his heels, not the least Harm will he do to Allah And Allah will give reward to those Who are grateful." (3.144) The people wept loudly, and the Ansar were assembled with Sad bin 'Ubada in the shed of Bani Saida. They said (to the emigrants). "There should be one 'Amir from us and one from you." Then Abu Bakr, Umar bin Al-Khattab and Abu 'baida bin Al-Jarrah went to them. 'Umar wanted to speak but Abu Bakr stopped him. 'Umar later on used to say, "By Allah, I intended only to say something that appealed to me and I was afraid that Abu Bakr would not speak so well. Then Abu Bakr spoke and his speech was very eloquent. He said in his statement, "We are the rulers and you (Ansars) are the ministers (i.e. advisers)," Hubab bin Al-Mundhir said, "No, by Allah we won't accept this. But there must be a ruler from us and a ruler from you." Abu Bakr said, "No, we will be the rulers and you will be the ministers, for they (i.e. Quarish) are the best family amongst the 'Arabs and of best origin. So you should elect either 'Umar or Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah as your ruler." 'Umar said (to Abu Bakr), "No but we elect you, for you are our chief and the best amongst us and the most beloved of all of us to Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So 'Umar took Abu Bakr's hand and gave the pledge of allegiance and the people too gave the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr. Someone said, "You have killed Sad bin Ubada." 'Umar said, "Allah has killed him."

muslim:1763Hannād b. al-Sarī > Ibn al-Mubārak > ʿIkrimah b. ʿAmmār

When it was the day on which the Battle of Badr was fought, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cast a glance at the infidels, and they were one thousand while his own Companions were three hundred and nineteen. The Prophet ﷺ turned (his face) towards the Qibla. Then he stretched his hands and began his supplication to his Lord: "O Allah, accomplish for me what Thou hast promised to me. O Allah, bring about what Thou hast promised to me. O Allah, if this small band of Muslims is destroyed. Thou will not be worshipped on this earth." He continued his supplication to his Lord, stretching his hands, facing the Qibla, until his mantle slipped down from his shoulders. So Abu Bakr came to him, picked up his mantle and put it on his shoulders. Then he embraced him from behind and said: Prophet of Allah, this prayer of yours to your Lord will suffice you, and He will fulfill for you what He has promised you. So Allah, the Glorious and Exalted, revealed (the Qur'anic verse): "When ye appealed to your Lord for help, He responded to your call (saying): I will help you with one thousand angels coming in succession." So Allah helped him with angels. Abu Zumail said that the hadith was narrated to him by Ibn ʿAbbas who said: While on that day a Muslim was chasing a disbeliever who was going ahead of him, he heard over him the swishing of the whip and the voice of the rider saying: Go ahead, Haizum! He glanced at the polytheist who had (now) fallen down on his back. When he looked at him (carefully he found that) there was a scar on his nose and his face was torn as if it had been lashed with a whip, and had turned green with its poison. An Ansari came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and related this (event) to him. He said: You have told the truth. This was the help from the third heaven. The Muslims that day (i.e. the day of the Battle of Badr) killed seventy persons and captured seventy. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr and ʿUmar (Allah be pleased with them): What is your opinion about these captives? Abu Bakr said: They are our kith and kin. I think you should release them after getting from them a ransom. This will be a source of strength to us against the infidels. It is quite possible that Allah may guide them to Islam. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What is your opinion, Ibn Khattab? He said: Messenger of Allah, I do not hold the same opinion as Abu Bakr. I am of the opinion that you should hand them over to us so that we may cut off their heads. Hand over ʿAqil to ʿAli that he may cut off his head, and hand over such and such relative to me that I may cut off his head. They are leaders of the disbelievers and veterans among them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approved the opinion of Abu Bakr and did not approve what I said. The next day when I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I found that both he and Abu Bakr were sitting shedding tears. I said: Messenger of Allah, why are you and your Companion shedding tears? Tell me the reason. For I will weep, or I will at least pretend to weep in sympathy with you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I weep for what has happened to your companions for taking ransom (from the prisoners). I was shown the torture to which they were subjected. It was brought to me as close as this tree. (He pointed to a tree close to him.) Then God revealed the verse: "It is not befitting for a prophet that he should take prisoners until the force of the disbelievers has been crushed..." to the end of the verse: "so eat ye the spoils of war, (it is) lawful and pure. So Allah made booty lawful for them."

ahmad:208Abū Nūḥ Qurād > ʿIkrimah b. ʿAmmār

On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at his companions and they were three hundred and some, then he looked at the mushrikeen and saw that they were one thousand or more. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ turned to face the qiblah, then he stretched forth his hands, wearing his upper and lower garment, and he said: “O Allah, where is Your promise to me? O Allah, accomplish for me what You have promised me! O Allah, if this small band of Muslims is destroyed, You will never be worshipped on earth.” He kept beseeching his Lord, calling out to Him, until his upper garment fell from his shoulders. Abu Bakr came to him, picked up his upper garment and put it on him. Then he embraced him from behind and said: O Prophet of Allah, this prayer of yours to your Lord will suffice, for He will accomplish for you what He has promised to you. Then Allah revealed the words: ʿ(Remember) when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): ‘I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other (following one another) in successionʿ [al Anfal 8:9). On that day when the armies met (in battle), Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, defeated the mushrikeen; seventy of their men were killed and seventy were taken captive. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted Abu Bakr, 'Ali and 'Umar ؓ م (concerning the prisoners). Abu Bakr said: O Prophet of Allah, they are our cousins, kinsmen and brothers, I think that you should accept a ransom for them, which will strengthen us against the kuffar, and perhaps Allah will guide them to Islam and they will become a support to us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “What do you think, O son of al-Khattab?ʿ I said: No, by Allah. I do not think as Abu Bakr thinks. I think that you should hand. So and so a relative of ʼUmar's- over to me so that I may strike his neck. You should hand ‘Aqeel over to ‘Ali so that he may strike his neck, and you should hand over So and so to Hamzah (his brother) so that he may strike his neck, so that Allah will know that we have no mercy in our hearts towards the mushrikeen; these are their prominent figures and leaders. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ inclined towards the view of Abu Bakr, and he did not incline towards what I said, and accepted ransoms from them. The next day, I came to the Prophet ﷺ and found him with Abu Bakr, and they were both weeping I said: O Messenger of Allah , tell me why you and your companion are weeping. If I find it is a cause for weeping, I will weep too, and is it is not, then I will make myself weep with you. You desire the good of this world (i.e. the money of ransom for freeing the captives), but Allah desires (for you) the Hereafter. And Allah is Almighty, All Wise. Were it not a previous ordainment from Allah, a severe torment would have touched you for what you took ʿ[al Anfal 8:67-68] i.e., referring to the ransom. Then booty was permitted to them, and when the day of Uhud came the following year, they were punished for what they had done of taking the ransom on the day of Badr. Seventy of them were killed and the Companions of the Prophet deserted him, his front tooth was broken and the helmet on his head was broken, and blood flowed down his face, and Allah revealed the words: “When a single disaster smites you, although you smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, you say: 'From where does this come to us?ʿSay (to them), ‘It is from yourselves (because of your evil deeds).' And Allah has power over all things” [Al 'Imran 3:165]

ahmad:221Abū Nūḥ Qurād > ʿIkrimah b.

O Allah, if this small band of Muslims is destroyed, You will never be worshiped on earth.” He kept beseeching his Lord, calling out to Him, until his upper garment fell from his shoulders. Abu Bakr came to him, picked up his upper garment and put it back on him. Then he embraced him from behind and said, “O Prophet of Allah, this prayer of yours to your Lord will suffice, for He will accomplish for you what He has promised to you.” Then Allah revealed the words: “(Remember) when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): ‘I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other (following one another) in succession’” (al-Anfal 8:9). On that day when the armies met (in battle), Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, caused the mushrikeen to be defeated, seventy of their men were killed and seventy were taken captive. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted Abu Bakr, ‘Ali and ʼUmar (concerning the prisoners). Abu Bakr said, “O Prophet of Allah, they are our cousins, kinsmen and brothers. I think that you should accept a ransom for them, which will strengthen us against the kuffar, and perhaps Allah will guide them to Islam and they will become a support to us.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “What do you think, O son of al-Khattab?” I said: No, by Allah. I do not think as Abu Bakr thinks. [Machine] On the day of Hunayn, the Hawazin tribe came with their children, women, camels, and livestock, and they formed rows, increasing in number against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . When they met, the Muslims turned their backs, as Allah the Almighty had stated. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O servants of Allah, I am the slave of Allah and His Messenger. O people of Ansar, I am the slave of Allah and His Messenger." So Allah defeated the polytheists and they did not strike with a sword or stab with a spear. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on that day, "Whoever kills a disbeliever, his belongings are his reward." Abu Talhah killed twenty men that day and took their belongings. Abu Qatadah said, "O Messenger of Allah, I struck a man with a chainmail armor and was unable to retrieve it. Look for someone who took it." A man stood up and said, "I took it, so give it to me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would never be asked for something and refuse to give it, so he remained silent. 'Umar said, "By Allah, Allah will not grant you and give it to the likes of you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said, "Umar is truthful." The mother of Sulaym had a dagger with her, and Abu Talhah asked her, "Why do you have this with you?" She said, "I took it in case any of the disbelievers come close to me, I can stab him in the stomach." Abu Talhah said, "O Messenger of Allah, don't you hear what Umm Sulaym is saying?" She said, "O Messenger of Allah, kill those who come after us from the enemies because they were defeated because of you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has sufficed us and blessed us, O Umm Sulaym."

He was one of the lions among them and you are giving him these items.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said, 'O Umar, you speak the truth.' Abu Talhah then met Umm Sulaym and she had a dagger with her. He asked, 'O Umm Sulaym, why do you have this with you?' She replied, 'If any of the polytheists approach me, I will stab his stomach with it.' Abu Talhah said, 'O Messenger of Allah, don't you hear what Umm Sulaym is saying?' He ﷺ said, 'O Umm Sulaym, Allah has sufficed and favored us.'"

[Machine] When it was Monday, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ removed the curtain of the room and saw Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq praying with the people. He said, "I looked at his face, and it was as if it was a page of the Quran, and he was smiling. We almost got distracted in our prayers out of joy of seeing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Abu Bakr intended to move, but when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him, he stayed in his place. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ opened the curtain and performed his prayer. On the same day, he passed away. Umar ibn Al-Khattab stood up and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not die, but he was sent to him as Moses was sent to him, and he resided among his people for forty nights. By Allah, I hope that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will live until he cuts off the hands of men from the hypocrites and silences their tongues, who claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died." Al-Zuhri reported that Anas ibn Malik informed him that he heard the speech of Umar ibn Al-Khattab about the Hereafter when he sat on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day after his death. Umar and Abu Bakr were quiet and did not speak, then Umar said, "As for the yesterday's statement, it was not as I said, and by Allah, I did not find the statement that I said in a book revealed by Allah or in a covenant given to me by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . But I hoped that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would live until he settles our affairs. If Muhammad ﷺ has indeed died, then Allah has placed among you a light, by which you will be guided. Hold fast to it, and be guided by what Allah has guided Muhammad ﷺ to. And indeed, Abu Bakr, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , is the second of the two. And he is the most deserving among you of your affairs. So pledge allegiance to him. And indeed, a group of them had already pledged allegiance to him in Saqifah Bani Sa'idah. And the pledge of the common people was on the pulpit."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Abu Bakr, Ali, and Umar, what do you see in these prisoners?" Abu Bakr replied, "O Prophet of Allah, they are the sons of relatives and clansmen. I suggest that we take ransom from them, so that we gain strength over the disbelievers. It is possible that Allah may guide them to Islam." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then asked Ibn Al-Khattab, "What do you think, O son of Al-Khattab?" He replied, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I do not see what Abu Bakr sees. Rather, I believe we should overpower them and strike the necks of their leaders. Let Ali strike the neck of Aqil and I will strike the neck of Fulan, the uncle of Umar. These are the leaders of disbelief and its mainstay." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased with what Abu Bakr said and did not approve of what I said. The next morning, when I came, I found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr sitting and weeping. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, please tell me the reason for your weeping, and the reason for your companion's weeping. If I find a reason to weep, I will weep along with you, and if I don't find a reason, I will pretend to weep." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I weep for what has been proposed to me by your companions regarding the ransom you suggested. Their punishment was presented to me, and it was less than this tree, a tree near the Prophet of Allah. Then Allah revealed to me, 'It is not for a Prophet to have captives until he has made a massacre in the land.' (Quran 8:67) until His saying, 'So enjoy what you have taken of booty as lawful and good.' (Quran 8:69) So Allah made the booty permissible for them."

[Machine] On the day of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet ﷺ asked, "What do you think of these prisoners?" Abu Bakr replied, "O Prophet of Allah, they are the sons of our relatives, our clans, and our brothers, except for the fact that we took ransom from them to gain strength against the disbelievers. Perhaps Allah may guide them to Islam and they will become supporters for us." The Prophet asked, "What do you think, O Ibn Al-Khattab?" Umar replied, "O Prophet of Allah, I do not see what Abu Bakr sees, but they are the leaders of disbelief and their heads should be struck down. Thus, the Messenger of Allah inclined to what Abu Bakr said and did not pay attention to what I had said. He accepted ransom from them. The next morning, I went to the Messenger of Allah and found him and Abu Bakr sitting and weeping. I asked, "O Prophet of Allah, tell me why you and your companion are weeping. If I find a reason to weep, I will weep. Otherwise, I will pretend to weep because you both are weeping." The Prophet replied, "The Companions presented to me the option of your punishment, which is more severe than this tree and another close tree at that time. Allah revealed the verse, 'It is not for a Prophet to have captives of war...'" (Quran, Surah Al-Anfal: 67).
