59.8 [Machine] Description of Paradise and its inhabitants

ibnhibban:7381al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān al-Shaybānī And Ibn Qutaybah > ʿAbbās b. ʿUthmān al-Bajalī > al-Walīd b. Muslim > Muḥammad b. Muhājir al-Anṣārī > al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Maʿāfirī > Sulaymān b. Mūsá > Kurayb a freed slave of Ibn ʿAbbās > Usāmah b. Zayd

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said one day to his Companions: ‘Who will strive hard with sincerity for Paradise? For there is nothing like Paradise. By the Lord of the Ka’bah, it is sparkling light, sweet basil waving in the breeze, a lofty palace, a flowing river, abundant ripe fruit, a beautiful wife and many fine garments, in a palace of eternal abode, in ease and luxury, in beautiful, strongly-built, lofty houses.’ They said: ‘We will strive heard for it, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘Say: In sha’ Allah (if Allah wills).’ Then he mentioned Jihad and encouraged them to engage in it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4332)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever kills a person who has a treaty with the Muslims unjustly, will not smell the fragrance of Paradise, even though its fragrance can be smelt at a distance of forty years."

ibnhibban:7383Abū Yaʿlá > Muslim b. Abū Muslim al-Jarmī > Makhlad b. al-Ḥusayn > Hishām > al-Ḥasan > Abū Bakrah

“Whoever claims to belong to someone other than his father will not smell the fragrance of Paradise, even though its fragrance may be detected from a distance of five hundred years.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2611)

ibnhibban:7384Aḥmad b. al-Muthanná > Dāwud b. ʿAmr b. Zuhayr al-Ḍabbī > Nāfiʿ b. ʿUmar al-Jumaḥī > Umayyah b. Ṣafwān b. ʿAbdullāh

[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying in his sermon from an elevated place in Ta'if, "You will soon come to know the people of Paradise from the people of Hell, or (you will come to know) the best amongst you and the worst amongst you." I only know that he said, "The people of Paradise are from the people of Hell." A man from the Muslims asked, "O Messenger of Allah, how is that possible?" He said, "By good reputation and bad reputation. You are witnesses to one another."

ibnhibban:7385ʿUmar b. Saʿīd b. Sinān > Ḥāmid b. Yaḥyá al-Balkhī > Sufyān > Muṭarrif b. Ṭarīf And Ibn Abjar Samiʿā al-Shaʿbī > al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah

The same hadith has been by AlMughirah bin Shu’bah attributing it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Using translation from Muslim 189a)

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Two gardens, the utensils and the contents of which are of silver, and two other gardens, the utensils and contents of which are of gold. And nothing will prevent the people who will be in the Garden of Eden from seeing their Lord except the curtain of Majesty over His Face." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4878)

ibnhibban:7387ʿUmar b. Saʿīd b. Sinān al-Ṭāʾī Bimanbij > Faraj b. Rawāḥah al-Manbijī > Zuhayr b. Muʿāwiyah > Saʿd al-Ṭāʾī > Abū al-Mudillah ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh a freed slave of > Abū Hurayrah

"We said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What is wrong with us that when we are with you our hearts are softened and we feel free of desire for this world, and we are of the people of the Hereafter. But when we depart from you and socialize with our families and our children, we do not recognize ourselves(i.e., we are changed persons)?' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'If you were to be in that condition when you depart from me, the angels would have surely visited you in your houses. And if you did not sin, Allah would surely have brought anew creation that they may sin, so that then He may forgive them.'"He said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! From what was the creation created?' He said: 'From water.' We said: 'Paradise, what is it constructed of?' He said,'Bricks of silver and bricks of gold. Its mortar is musk of a strong fragrance, and its pebbles are pearls and rubies, and its earth is saffron. Whoever enters it shall live and shall not suffer, and shall feel joy and shall not die, nor shall their clothes wear out, nor shall their youth come to an end.' Then he said: 'Three persons , their supplication is not rejected: The just ruler, the fasting person when he breaks his fast, and the supplication of the wronged person. It is raised up above the clouds, and the gates of Heaven are opened up for it, and the Lord, Blessed and Exalted says: I shall surely come to your aid, even if after a time.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2526)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The distance between the two doorframes of Paradise is equivalent to a journey of seven years."

[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said, "Indeed, in Paradise, there are one hundred levels that Allah has prepared for the Mujahideen in his cause. Between each level is like the distance between the heavens and the earth. So when you ask Allah, ask Him for Al-Firdaus, for it is the middle of Paradise and it is the highest part of Paradise, and above it is the Throne. From it, rivers of Paradise flow."

Um (the mother of) Haritha came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ after Haritha had been martyred on the Day (of the battle) of Badr by an arrow thrown by an unknown person. She said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You know the position of Haritha in my heart (i.e. how dear to me he was), so if he is in Paradise, I will not weep for him, or otherwise, you will see what I will do." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Are you mad? Is there only one Paradise? There are many Paradises, and he is in the highest Paradise of Firdaus." The Prophet added, "A forenoon journey or an after noon journey in Allah's Cause is better than the whole world and whatever is in it; and a place equal to an arrow bow of anyone of you, or a place equal to a foot in Paradise is better than the whole world and whatever is in it; and if one of the women of Paradise looked at the earth, she would fill the whole space between them (the earth and the heaven) with light, and would fill whatever is in between them, with perfume, and the veil of her face is better than the whole world and whatever is in it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6567)

The inmates of Paradise would see the inmates of the apartment over them just as you see the shining planets which remain in the eastern and the western horizon because of the superiority some have over others. They said: Messenger of Allah, would in these abodes of Apostles others besides them not be able to reach? He said: Yes, they will, by Him, in Whose hand is my life, those who believe in God and acknowledge the Truth, will reach them. (Using translation from Muslim 2831b)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The roof of my house was opened while I was in Makkah, and Jibril came down and opened my chest and washed it with Zamzam water. Then he brought a golden platter filled with wisdom and faith, and poured it into my chest and closed it. Then he took my hand and ascended with me to the sky. When we reached the first sky, Jibril said to the gatekeeper, 'Open up.' The gatekeeper asked, 'Who is this?' Jibril replied, 'Jibril.' The gatekeeper asked, 'Does he have anyone with him?' Jibril said, 'Yes, he is with me, Muhammad, ﷺ .' The gatekeeper asked, 'Has he been sent for?' Jibril replied, 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened. When we ascended higher to the second sky, Jibril said to the gatekeeper, 'Open up.' The gatekeeper responded the same way as the gatekeeper of the first sky. Anas bin Malik mentioned, "I found Adam, Idris, Jesus, Moses, and Ibrahim in the heavens, and I could not ascertain their positions, except that I found Adam in the nearest heaven and Ibrahim in the sixth heaven." Ibn Shihab and Ibn Hazm narrated that Ibn Abbas and Abu Habibah al-Ansari used to say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Then I was taken up until I reached a place where I could hear the scratch of pens." Ibn Hazm and Anas bin Malik mentioned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah obligated fifty prayers on my Ummah, but I kept requesting Him to reduce it until He made it five prayers. However, I felt shy to do more and returned to Allah, so He decreed them as fifty, which would not be changed." Then I returned to Moses, who said, 'Go back to your Lord and ask Him to reduce it further, as your Ummah will not be able to bear it.' I felt ashamed to do so and returned to my Lord. Then Moses asked me again to go back, but I felt too shy to ask Allah for more reduction. I then returned to my Lord and He said, 'It is five and it is still fifty; the words of Allah do not change.' So I returned, and when I mentioned it to Moses, he instructed me to go back again. But I said, 'I have felt too shy from my Lord,' and it was at that time that Allah revealed, 'O Muhammad! There never has been and never will be a change in My Words.'" Then Jibril took me until we reached the Sidrat al-Muntaha (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary), and its leaves covered it with colors I cannot describe. Then I was admitted into Paradise, and I saw houses made of pearls and its soil was musk."

The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Then he skinned it and gave it to your mother, and he said, "Dye it for us." Then he said, "Weave a bucket for us from it so that we can use it to quench our thirst." The man asked, 'Will that grape satisfy me and my family?' He replied, 'Yes, and it will also satisfy your entire tribe.'"

While I was standing beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one of the rabbis of the Jews came and said: Peace be upon you, O Muhammad. I pushed him backwith a push that he was going to fall. Upon this he said: Why do you push me? I said: Why don't you say: O Messenger of Allah? The Jew said: We call him by the name by which he was named by his family. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: My name is Muhammad with which I was named by my family. The Jew said: I have come to ask you (something). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Should that thing be of any benefit to you, if I tell you that? He (the Jew) said: I will lend my ears to it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew a line with the help of the stick that he had with him and then said: Ask (whatever you like). Thereupon the Jew said: Where would the human beings be on the Daywhen the earth would change into another earth and the heavens too (would change into other heavens)? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: They would be in darkness beside the Bridge. He (the Jew) again said: Who amongst people would be the first to cross (this bridge).? He said: They would be the poor amongst the refugees. The Jew said: What would constitute their breakfast when they would enter Paradise? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: A caul of the fish-liver. He (the Jew) said. What would be their food alter this? He (the Holy Prophet) said: A bullockwhich was fed in the different quarters of Paradise would be slaughtered for them. He (the Jew) said: What would be their drink? He (the Holy Prophet) said: They would be given drink from the fountain which is named" Salsabil". He (the Jew) said: I have come to ask you about a thing which no one amongst the people on the earth knows except an apostle or one or two men besides him. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Would it benefit you if I tell you that? He (the Jew) said: I would lend ears to that. He then said: I have come to ask you about the child. He (the Holy Prophet) said: The reproductive substance of man is white and that of woman (i. e. ovum central portion) yellow, and when they have sexual intercourse and the male's substance (chromosomes and genes) prevails upon the female's substance (chromosomes and genes), it is the male child that is created by Allah's Decree, and when the substance of the female prevails upon the substance contributed by the male, a female child is formed by the Decree of Allah. The Jew said: What you have said is true; verily you are an Apostle. He then returned and went away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He asked me about such and such things of which I have had no knowledge till Allah gave me that. (Using translation from Muslim 315a)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , arrived in Medina, and Abdullah bin Salam was under a date palm. So, Abdullah bin Salam went to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and said, "I want to ask you about things that only a prophet knows. If you inform me about them, I will believe in you." He asked him about resemblance, the first thing that will gather people, and the first thing the people of Paradise will eat. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Gabriel informed me about them in advance." Abdullah bin Salam said, "That is the enemy of the Jews." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "When a man's water mixes with a woman's water, then the resemblance will be determined. And when a woman's water precedes a man's water, then the resemblance will be determined accordingly. The first thing that will gather people is a fire coming from the east, which will gather the people in the west. And the first thing the people of Paradise will eat is the head of a bull and a fish's liver." Then he said, "O Messenger of Allah, the Jews are a confused people. If they hear about my belief in you, they will speak ill of me and accuse me. I wish that you would send for them." So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , sent for them, and they came asking, "Who is Abdullah bin Salam?" They said, "Our master, the son of our master, our scholar, the son of our scholar, our best, the son of our best." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "What would you say if he became Muslim?" They said, "Allah protect us from saying such a thing. He will not do that." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , then said, "Go out, O Abdullah bin Salam." So he went out to them and said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." They said, "Rather, he is our worst, the son of our worst, our ignorant, the son of our ignorant." [Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Indeed, in Paradise there is a market that they come to every Friday. In it, there are heaps of musk, and the smell of perfume from the North blows, so they are perfumed or dusted with musk on their faces. They then come to their families, who say to them, 'Indeed, Allah has increased you with beauty and goodness after us.' They say to them, 'You too have been increased by Allah with beauty and goodness after us.'"

"While he was on the Minbar, I heard Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah saying - and he attributed it to the Prophet ﷺ - 'Indeed Musa [peace be upon him] asked his Lord: "O Lord! Who is the lowest in rank among the people of Paradise?" He said: "A man who comes after the people of Paradise have been admitted to Paradise, and he is told to enter. He says: 'How can I enter when they have gotten all of their abodes, and all that is to be had?'" He said: "So it is said to him: 'Would you accept if you were to have what a king in the world?' He says: 'Yes, O Lord! I accept.' So it is said to him: 'Then for you is this and its like, and its like again, and its like again.' So he says: 'I accept, O Lord!' So it is said to him: 'Then for you is this and ten the like thereof.' So he says: 'I accept, O Lord!' So it is said: 'Indeed you shall have this, and whatever your soul desires, and whatever delights your eyes.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3198)

[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ who said, "Indeed, I know the last person to come out of the Fire. It will be a man who crawls out and he will be told to enter Paradise, so he will enter, then he will come out and say, 'O Lord, everyone has taken their place in the ranks.' It will be said to him, 'Do you remember the time you were in the world?' He will say yes. Then he will be told, 'Wish for something.' So he will wish and it will be said to him, 'You will have something like it, and ten times as much.' He will be the lowest in status among the people of Paradise."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There will be a group in the Fire whom Allah will wish to remove. So, Allah will have mercy on them and take them out and they will be in the lowest level of Paradise, being washed in the river of life. Then, the people of Paradise will name them as the Hell-dwellers. Had one of them walked amongst the people of the world, he would have fed them and given them drink. And had one of them married the women of the world, he would have satisfied his desires with them, and he would not have decreased anything from what he had."

[Machine] The people, O Messenger of Allah, asked: "Will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Do you have any difficulty in seeing the sun when there are no clouds?" They replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then, do you have any difficulty in seeing the moon on a full moon night when there are no clouds?" They replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Indeed, you will see Him on the Day of Resurrection just as you have no difficulty in seeing the sun and the moon in their clear skies. Allah will gather the people on the Day of Resurrection and say, 'Whoever used to worship something, let him follow it.' So, those who used to worship the sun will follow the sun, and those who used to worship the moon will follow the moon, and those who used to worship idols will follow the idols. Then, the remainder of this Ummah will remain with their hypocrites. Allah will come to them in a form that they will recognize and will say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'We seek refuge with Allah from you. This is our place until our Lord comes to us.' When our Lord comes to them, they will recognize Him and say, 'You are our Lord.' But a bridge will be placed over Hellfire." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I will be the first one to cross it. The invocation of the Messengers on that day will be, 'O Allah, grant safety, grant safety,' and with me will be my followers, resembling the boughs of a tree (or the sa'adān)?" It was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the boughs of a tree (sa'adān)?" He replied, "Do you know the extent of the boughs of a tree?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "It is like that, but Allah Alone knows its real extent. Then, the people will go on being examined and interrogated regarding their deeds. Some of them will be saved by their deeds, while others will be ruined, Many of those who will be ruined will be subject to punishment and thus will be purified (through the fire of Hell), until Allah, the Lord of the worlds, will come to them and ask, 'Whoever said, 'La ilaha illâ Allah' (None has the right to be worshiped but Allah), bring all his good deeds to reward him.' They will come forward with all their good deeds, but the one who will weigh most heavily in the balance, will be his testimony of having said, 'La ilaha illâ Allah.' The person will be saved (from the Hellfire) and laughed at." Allah will then say, "Go and enter the Paradise." The person will keep asking Allah for the fulfillment of his desires, so Allah will remind him and say, "Didn't you assert that you would not ask for anything other than what you have already been given? Woe to you, O son of Adam! How treacherous you were!" The person will then invoke Allah again and again, and Allah will say, "If I give you that, will you then ask for anything else?" The person will say, "No, by Your Majesty! I shall not ask for anything else." Allah will fulfill his desire and let him enter Paradise. The person will be so contented that he will remain quiet and will not stand up (for any need), but Allah will prompt him and say, "Do you want anything else?" Until all his desires and wishes will be fulfilled, then Allah will say, "This is for you, and so is ten times the like of it, and a similar palace, the like of which you have seen." Abu Sa`id (a companion of the Prophet) added, "If you wish, you can recite this verse from the Holy Quran: 'For those who have done good is the best reward and even more.'" (10:26)

[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said: "The last person to enter Paradise will be a man walking on the Sirat (bridge to Paradise). He will stumble once and the fire will scorch him. Every time he passes by it, he will turn to it and say, 'Blessed is the One who saved me from you. By Allah, no one has been given anything like what I have been given among all the worlds.’ Then, a tree will be raised for him, and he will say, 'O Lord, draw me closer to it so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.’ Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, if I give you that, you will ask Me for something else.’ But the man will swear that he will not ask for anything else, even though he knows that he will. Then, Allah will bring him close to it, and he will take shelter in its shade and drink from its water. Then, another tree will be raised for him, which is even better than the first. He will say, 'O Lord, draw me closer to it so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.’ Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, if I give you that, you will ask Me for something else.’ But the man will swear that he will not ask for anything else, even though he knows that he will. Then, Allah will bring him close to it, and he will take shelter in its shade and drink from its water. Then, a third tree will be raised for him at the gate of Paradise, which is even better than the first two. He will say, 'O Lord, draw me closer to it so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.’ Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, if I give you that, you will ask Me for something else.’ But the man will swear that he will not ask for anything else, even though he knows that he will. Then, Allah will bring him close to it, and he will hear the voices of the people of Paradise. He will say, 'O Lord, admit me to Paradise.’ Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, what will make you content with Me and My favor? Would it please you if I give you the entire world and as much again?’ The man will reply, 'Are You making fun of me while You are the Lord of all creation?’ I said, 'Would you not like Me to give you that and as much again?’ The man will say, 'O Lord, I am not making fun of You, but I am asking You for something else.’ The Prophet ﷺ then smiled so broadly that his molars could be seen and he said, 'Do you not wonder at what made me laugh? They asked, 'O Prophet of Allah! What made you laugh?’ He said, 'I laughed because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the same as I have said (i.e., the man said the same as I said when he entered Paradise).' "
