59. Book of Virtues of the Companions
We offered the sunset prayer along with Allah's Apostle ﷺ. We then said: If we sit (along with Messenger of Allah) and observe night prayer with him it would be very good, so we sat down and he came to us and said: You are still sitting here. I said: Messenger of Allah, we observed evening prayer with you, then we said: Let us sit down and observe night prayer along with you, whereupon he said: You have done well or you have done right. He then lifted his head towards the sky and it often happened that as he lifted his head towards the sky, he said: The stars are a source of security for the sky and when the stars disappear there comes to the sky, i. e. (it meets the same fate) as it has been promised (it would plunge into darkness). And I am a source of safety and security to my Companions and when I would go away there would fall to the lot (of my Companions) as they have been promised with and my Companions are a source of security for the Umma and as they would go there would fall to the lot of my Umma as (its people) have been promised. (Using translation from Muslim 2531)

[Machine] I met a man from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , who had such a weighty tongue that it made his speech clear. He mentioned Uthman and said, "By Allah, I do not know what he is saying except that you, O group of the Companions of Muhammad, know that we used to say, 'Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman, and verily this wealth is if he gives it to us, we are pleased.'"

[Machine] "We used to prioritize during the time of the Messenger of Allah, starting with Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Uthman, then we would remain silent."
that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The most merciful of my nation to my nation is Abu Bakr, and the most severe of them concerning the order of Allah is 'Umar, and the most truly modest of them is 'Uthman bin 'Affan. The best reciter (of the Qur'an) among them is Ubayy bin Ka'b, the most knowledgeable of them concerning (the laws of) inheritance is Zaid bin Thabit, the most knowledgeable of them concerning the lawful and the unlawful is Mu'adh bin Jabal. Truly, every nation has a trustworthy one, and the trustworthy one of this nation is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3791)

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Do not revile my Companions, for by The One in Whose Hand is my soul! If any one of you were to spend the equivalent of Mount Uhud in gold, it would not equal a Mudd spent by anyone of them, nor even half a Mudd." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 161)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood before us as I am standing before you, and said: ʿI urge you to show respect to my Companions, then those who come after them, then those who come after them, then lying will become so widespread that a man will start to give testimony before he is asked to do so.Whoever among you wants to attain a spacious abode in Paradise, let him adhere to the jama'ah (main body of Muslims), for the Shaitan is with the one who is alone, but he is further away from two. And no one of you should be alone with a woman for the Shaitan will be the third one present. The one who is pleased with his good deeds and upset by his bad deeds is a believer.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 114)

Do not revile my Companions; by him in whose hand my soul is, if one of you contributed the amount of gold equivalent to Uhud, it would not amount to as much as the mudd of one of them, or half of it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4658)
that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "(Fear) Allah! (Fear) Allah regarding my Companions! Do not make them objects of insults after me. Whoever loves them, it is out of love of me that he loves them. And whoever hates them, it is out of hatred for me that he hates them. And whoever harms them, he has harmed me, and whoever harms me, he has offended Allah, and whoever offends Allah, [then] he shall soon be punished." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3862)
[Machine] I heard Abu Ruhum Al-Ghifari, one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ who pledged allegiance under the tree, saying: I joined the Prophet ﷺ in the Tabuk expedition. When we stopped for the night, I went near him and suddenly I felt drowsy and fell asleep. I woke up to find that my camel was close to his camel, and I was afraid that its hooves might hurt his feet due to the intensity of the darkness. So, I reprimanded my camel until my eyes became heavy during the night. Then, my camel collided with his camel and his legs stuck in my camel's stirrup, and his leg got injured. I woke up only when he said, "Hass." I raised my head and said, "O Messenger of Allah, seek forgiveness for me." He said, "Keep it secret." Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up and asked me about those who were left behind from Banu Ghifar. I informed him, and he said, "What did the red horses do, the valiant ones?" I told him about their lagging behind, and he said, "What did the black horses, the swift ones or the short-legged ones with snub tails do?" Then, I remembered them among Banu Ghifar, and I did not mention them until I mentioned a few individuals who embraced Islam. So, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, those people are related to some individuals who embraced Islam, but they lagged behind." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What prevents them, when one of them lags behind, from carrying a load on his energetic camel for the sake of Allah? What hurts me the most is to see that the immigrants, the ansar, and the Muslims in general lag behind me."

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ liked the Muhajirun and Ansar to stand closest to him, so that they could learn from him.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 977)
[Machine] The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say while digging the trench.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Emigrants and the Ansar are allies to one another in this world and in the Hereafter. And those who were freed from the Quraysh and those who were freed from Thaqif, some of them are allies to one another in this world and in the Hereafter."
On the authority of his father (Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas): When he (Sa'd) fell ill at Mecca (according to the version of Ibn Abi Kkalaf) - then the agreed version has: which brought him near to death - the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to visit him. He said: Messenger of Allah, I have a large amount of property, and my daughter is my only heir. May I give two-thirds (of my property) as a sadaqah (charity)? He said: No. He asked: Then a half ? He replied: No. He asked: Then one-third ? He replied: (You may will away) a third and third is a lot. To leave your heirs rich is better than to leave them poor begging from people. You will not spend anything, seeking thereby to please Allah, without being rewarded for it, even the mouthful you give your wife. I said: Messenger of Allah, shall I be left behind form immigration (to Medina)? He said: If you remain behind after me and do good works seeking the pleasure of Allah, your rank will be raised and degree increased. Perhaps you will not remain behind, and some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. He then said: O Allah, complete the immigration of my Companions and do not turn them back. But miserable was Sa'd b. Khawlah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lamented on him as he died at Mecca. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2864)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "For the immigrants (Muslims who migrated from Mecca to Medina), there will be pulpits made of gold on which they will sit on the Day of Judgment. They will be safe from fear." Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said, "By Allah, if I were to have one of them, I would have taken my people to it."
[Machine] "There were young men from the Ansar who were called the Qura'a. They used to stay in a certain area of the city, and their families thought they were in the mosque, while the people in the mosque thought they were with their families. They would pray at night until dawn approached, then they would gather firewood and draw water and place it at the doors of the houses of the Messenger of Allah. So he sent them all to the well of Ma'unah, where they were martyred. The Prophet ﷺ mourned their loss for several days."
A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I am suffering from fatigue and hunger." The Prophet ﷺ sent (somebody) to his wives (to get something), but the messenger found nothing with them. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (to his companions). "Isn't there anybody who can entertain this man tonight so that Allah may be merciful to him?" An Ansari man got up and said, "I (will, entertain him), O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" So he went to his wife and said to her, "This is the guest of Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so do not keep anything away from him." She said. "By Allah, I have nothing but the children's food." He said, "When the children ask for their dinner, put them to bed and put out the light; we shall not take our meals tonight," She did so. In the morning the Ansari man went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said, "Allah was pleased with (or He bestowed His Mercy) on so-and-so and his wife (because of their good deed)." Then Allah revealed: 'But give them preference over themselves even though they were in need of that.' (59.9) (Using translation from Bukhārī 4889)

The Ansar are my family and my trusted friends. and the people would increase in number whereas they (the Ansar) would become less and less, so appreciate the deeds of those from amongst them who do good and overlook their failings. (Using translation from Muslim 2510)

Therefore, be good to those who are good among them and overlook the wrong of those who do wrong among them.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed the spoils of Hunayn, giving a hundred camels to Al-Arqam bin Habis, and a hundred camels to Uyaynah bin Badr. He also mentioned a group from the Ansar and they said, "O Messenger of Allah, will you be giving our spoils to a people whose swords are dripping with our blood, or will their blood mix with our swords?" When he was informed of this, he gathered the Ansar and said, "Is there anyone among you besides these two?" They said, "No, except for the son of our maternal aunt." He (the Prophet) said, "The nephew of the people is from them." Then he said, "O group of the Ansar, do you not want the people to take the worldly possessions and the cattle while you take Muhammad to your homes?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, if the people took a valley and the Ansar took a mound, I would take the mound of the Ansar. The Ansar are my supporters, my confidants, and if not for the Hijra, I would have been one of the Ansar."

[Machine] Usaid ibn Hudayr al-Ashhali, the leader, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned to him a family from the Ansar who had a need. The Prophet ﷺ said, "You left us until what was in our hands was gone, and when you hear of something that has come to us, mention it to me." So after that, he brought him food from Khaibar, which consisted of barley and dates. The majority of the people in that household were women. The Prophet ﷺ divided the food among the people, the Ansar, and the family. He was generous in his division and said to Usaid ibn Hudayr, "May Allah reward you, O Prophet of Allah, with the best of rewards." The Prophet ﷺ replied, "And you, O group of Ansar, may Allah reward you with the best of rewards. What I have taught you is noble patience and concealment after me in matters and life. May Allah grant pardon to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he bestowed (these camels) upon the people of Quraish, and he ignored us, whereas our swords are still dripping blood. Anas b. Malik said: Their statement was conveyed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he sent (someone) to the Ansar and gathered them under a tent of leather. When they had assembled, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them and said: What is this news that has reached me from you? The wise people of the Ansar said: Messenger of Allah, so far as the sagacious amongst us are concerned they have said nothing, but we have amongst us persons of immature age; they said: May Allah grant pardon to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he gave to the Quraish and ignored us (despite the fact) that our swords are besmeared with their blood. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I give (at times material gifts) to persons who were quite recently in the state of unbelief, so that I may incline them to truth Don't you feel delighted that people should go with riches, and you should go back to your places with the Messenger of Allah? By Allah, that with which you would return is better than that with which they would return. They said: Yes, Messenger of Allah, we are pleased. The Prophet said too: You would find marked preference (in conferring of the material gifts) in future, so you should show patience till you meet Allah and His Messenger and I would he at the Haud Kauthar. They said: We would show patience. (Using translation from Muslim 1059a)

He said: 'The delegation of 'Abdul-Qais came to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he said: Welcome to a delegation that is not disgraced or filled with regret. They said: O Messenger of Allah, the idolators are between us and you, and we can only reach you during the sacred months. Tell us of something which, if we do it, we will enter Paradise, and we can tell it to those whom we left behind. He said: I will enjoin three things upon you, and forbid four things to you. I order you to have faith in Allah, and do you know what faith in Allah is? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: (It means) testifying that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, establishing Salah, paying Zakah and giving one-fifth (the Khums) of the spoils of war.
