59. Book of Virtues of the Companions (1/13)
"The first people to declare their Islam publicly were seven: The Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr, 'Ammar and his mother Sumayyah, Suhaib, Bilal and Miqdad. With regard to the Messenger of Allah, Allah protected him through his paternal uncle Abu Talib. With regard to Abu Bakr, Allah protected him through his people. As for the rest, the idolators seized them and made them wear coats of chain-mail and exposed them to the intense heat of the sun. There was none of them who did not do what they wanted them to do, except for Bilal. He did not care what happened to him for the sake of Allah, and his people did not care what happened to him. Then they gave him to the children who took him around in the streets of Makkah while he was saying, 'Ahad, Ahad (One, One).'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 150)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was admitted into Paradise and heard a rustling sound in front of me. I asked, 'Who is this?' Gabriel, ﷺ , said, 'This is Bilal.'"
[Machine] I said to Abu Usamah, "Shall I inform you about the most hopeful deed that Abu Hayyan narrated from Abu Zur'ah, from Abu Hurairah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Bilal during the Fajr prayer: 'O Bilal, tell me of the most hopeful deed that you have done in Islam, for I heard a rustling of your sandals before me in front of Paradise tonight.' Bilal said, 'The most hopeful deed that I have done is that whenever I have performed ablution in a complete and perfect manner, at any hour of the day or night, I have prayed to my Lord as much as He has decreed for me to pray.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I did not enter Paradise except that I heard a rustling sound. So I asked, 'Who is this?' They said, 'Bilal.' Then I passed by a beautifully constructed palace and asked, 'Whose is this?' They said, 'A man from the nation of Muhammad ﷺ .' So I asked, 'Am I Muhammad? Whose palace is this?' They said, 'It belongs to a man from the Arabs.' So I asked, 'Am I an Arab? Whose palace is this?' They said, 'It belongs to Umar ibn Al-Khattab.' Then Umar said to Bilal, 'By what did you surpass me to Paradise?' Bilal replied, 'I did not do anything except that I performed ablution and I did not perform ablution except that I prayed.' Umar said to the Messenger of Allah, 'If not for your jealousy, I would have entered the palace.' The Messenger of Allah said, 'O Umar, I could not bear to see you in a state of distress.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , heard a rustling sound in front of him, so he asked, "Who is this?" They replied, "It is Bilal." So he informed him and asked, "By what means did you surpass me to Paradise?" Bilal replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I have not done anything except that whenever I performed ablution, I offered two units of prayer. I did not perform ablution except that I saw it as an opportunity to pray these two units for Allah." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Because of them [i.e., the two units of prayer]."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the killing of the captives of Badr, so they were dragged to the well and thrown into it. Then he came and stood beside them, and said, "O people of the well, have you found what your Lord promised you to be true? For I have found what my Lord promised me to be true." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, are you speaking to dead people?" He said, "They have indeed known that what I promised them is true." When Abu Hudhayfah bin 'Utbah saw his father being dragged to the well, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed the repulsion in his face, so he said, "You seem to dislike what you see." Abu Hudhayfah said, "O Messenger of Allah, my father was a noble and patient man, and I had hoped that Allah would guide him to Islam. When he was in the position he is now, it saddened me. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for Abu Hudhayfah with goodness."
[Machine] "Khalid bin Al-Walid had wielded in my hand on the day of Mu'tah nine swords, and there remained in my hand only a Yemeni metal plate."
[Machine] Khalid ibn Al-Walid went out with the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , on the day of Hunayn. He was riding on the Messenger of Allah's horse. Ibn Al-Azhar said, "I saw the Prophet, ﷺ , saying, 'Who can lead me to Khalid ibn Al-Walid's horse?' So I walked or hurried in front of him, saying, 'Who can lead me to Khalid ibn Al-Walid's horse?' until we were guided to his horse. And there he was, sitting and leaning against the back of his horse. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came to him and looked at his wound. Az-Zuhri said, 'I thought that he also blew on it.'"
[Machine] Abdul Rahman ibn Auf complained to the Messenger of Allah PBUH about the harm caused by Khalid ibn Walid to a man from the people of Badr. The Messenger of Allah PBUH said, "O Khalid, why do you harm a man from the people of Badr? If you were to spend the equivalent of Uhud in gold, you would not be able to attain his status." Khalid replied, "O Messenger of Allah, they attack me and I respond to them." The Messenger of Allah PBUH said, "Do not harm Khalid, for he is a sword from the swords of Allah whom Allah sends upon the disbelievers."
[Machine] I heard Amr ibn al-As say, "The people panicked in Medina with the Prophet ﷺ, so they scattered. I saw Salim, the servant of Abu Hudhayfah, grab his sword and sit in the mosque. When I saw that, I did the same thing. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and saw me and Salim as we were, and he came to the people and said, 'O people, wasn't your panic supposed to be towards Allah and His Messenger? Didn't you act like these two believers did?'"
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (to me), "You have been shown to me twice in (my) dreams. A man was carrying you in a silken cloth and said to me, 'This is your wife.' I uncovered it; and behold, it was you. I said to myself, 'If this dream is from Allah, He will cause it to come true.' " (Using translation from Bukhārī 5078)
[Machine] Gabriel ﷺ came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrapped in a silk garment and said, "This is your wife in this life and the hereafter."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned Fatimah and she said, "I spoke and said, 'Would you not be pleased for me to be your wife in this life and the hereafter?' I said, 'Yes, by Allah.'" He said, "Then you are my wife in this life and the hereafter."
[Machine] She said, "O Messenger of Allah, who are your wives in Paradise?" He said, "As for you, you are one of them." She then thought to herself that he had not married a virgin other than herself.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house at the age of nine. She further said: We went to Medina and I had an attack of fever for a month, and my hair had come down to the earlobes. Umm Ruman (my mother) came to me and I was at that time on a swing along with my playmates. She called me loudly and I went to her and I did not know what she had wanted of me. She took hold of my hand and took me to the door, and I was saying: Ha, ha (as if I was gasping), until the agitation of my heart was over. She took me to a house, where had gathered the women of the Ansar. They all blessed me and wished me good luck and said: May you have share in good. She (my mother) entrusted me to them. They washed my head and embellished me and nothing frightened me. Messenger of Allah (, may peace be upon him) came there in the morning, and I was entrusted to him. (Using translation from Muslim 1422a)
that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O 'Aishah! Here is Jibril and he is giving Salam to you." She said: "I said: 'And upon him be peace and the mercy of Allah, and His blessings. You see that which we do not.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3881)

(the wife of the Prophet) "Whenever Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to go on a journey, he would draw lots amongst his wives and would take with him the one upon whom the lot fell. During a Ghazwa of his, he drew lots amongst us and the lot fell upon me, and I proceeded with him after Allah had decreed the use of the veil by women. I was carried in a Howdah (on the camel) and dismounted while still in it. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ was through with his Ghazwa and returned home, and we approached the city of Medina, Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to proceed at night. When the order of setting off was given, I walked till I was past the army to answer the call of nature. After finishing I returned (to the camp) to depart (with the others) and suddenly realized that my necklace over my chest was missing. So, I returned to look for it and was delayed because of that. The people who used to carry me on the camel, came to my Howdah and put it on the back of the camel, thinking that I was in it, as, at that time, women were light in weight, and thin and lean, and did not use to eat much. So, those people did not feel the difference in the heaviness of the Howdah while lifting it, and they put it over the camel. At that time I was a young lady. They set the camel moving and proceeded on. I found my necklace after the army had gone, and came to their camp to find nobody. So, I went to the place where I used to stay, thinking that they would discover my absence and come back in my search. While in that state, I felt sleepy and slept. Safwan bin Mu'attal As-Sulami Adh-Dhakwani was behind the army and reached my abode in the morning. When he saw a sleeping person, he came to me, and he used to see me before veiling. So, I got up when I heard him saying, "Inna lil-lah-wa inn a ilaihi rajiun (We are for Allah, and we will return to Him)." He made his camel knell down. He got down from his camel, and put his leg on the front legs of the camel and then I rode and sat over it. Safwan set out walking, leading the camel by the rope till we reached the army who had halted to take rest at midday. Then whoever was meant for destruction, fell into destruction, (some people accused me falsely) and the leader of the false accusers was ʿAbdullah bin Ubai bin Salul. After that we returned to Medina, and I became ill for one month while the people were spreading the forged statements of the false accusers. I was feeling during my ailment as if I were not receiving the usual kindness from the Prophet ﷺ which I used to receive from him when I got sick. But he would come, greet and say, 'How is that (girl)?' I did not know anything of what was going on till I recovered from my ailment and went out with Um Mistah to the Manasi where we used to answer the call of nature, and we used not to go to answer the call of nature except from night to night and that was before we had lavatories near to our houses. And this habit of ours was similar to the habit of the old 'Arabs in the open country (or away from houses). So. I and Um Mistah bint Ruhm went out walking. Um Mistah stumbled because of her long dress and on that she said, 'Let Mistah be ruined.' I said, 'You are saying a bad word. Why are you abusing a man who took part in (the battle of) Badr?' She said, 'O Hanata (you there) didn't you hear what they said?' Then she told me the rumors of the false accusers. My sickness was aggravated, and when I returned home, Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me, and after greeting he said, 'How is that (girl)?' I requested him to allow me to go to my parents. I wanted then to be sure of the news through them I Messenger of Allah ﷺ allowed me, and I went to my parents and asked my mother, 'What are the people talking about?' She said, 'O my daughter! Don't worry much about this matter. By Allah, never is there a charming woman loved by her husband who has other wives, but the women would forge false news about her.' I said, 'Glorified be Allah! Are the people really taking of this matter?' That night I kept on weeping and could not sleep till morning. In the morning Messenger of Allah ﷺ called ʿAli bin Abu Talib and Usama bin Zaid when he saw the Divine Inspiration delayed, to consul them about divorcing his wife (i.e. ʿAisha). Usama bin Zaid said what he knew of the good reputation of his wives and added, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Keep you wife, for, by Allah, we know nothing about her but good.' ʿAli bin Abu Talib said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Allah has no imposed restrictions on you, and there are many women other than she, yet you may ask the woman-servant who will tell you the truth.' On that Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Barirah and said, 'O Barirah. Did you ever see anything which roused your suspicions about her?' Barirah said, 'No, by Allah Who has sent you with the Truth, I have never seen in her anything faulty except that she is a girl of immature age, who sometimes sleeps and leaves the dough for the goats to eat.' On that day Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and requested that somebody support him in punishing ʿAbdullah bin Ubai bin Salul. Allah's Apostle said, 'Who will support me to punish that person (ʿAbdullah bin Ubai bin Salul) who has hurt me by slandering the reputation of my family? By Allah, I know nothing about my family but good, and they have accused a person about whom I know nothing except good, and he never entered my house except in my company.' Saʿd bin Muʿadh got up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! by Allah, I will relieve you from him. If that man is from the tribe of the Aus, then we will chop his head off, and if he is from our brothers, the Khazraj, then order us, and we will fulfill your order.' On that Saʿd bin 'Ubada, the chief of the Khazraj and before this incident, he had been a pious man, got up, motivated by his zeal for his tribe and said, 'By Allah, you have told a lie; you cannot kill him, and you will never be able to kill him.' On that Usaid bin Al-Hadir got up and said (to Saʿd bin 'Ubada), 'By Allah! you are a liar. By Allah, we will kill him; and you are a hypocrite, defending the hypocrites.' On this the two tribes of Aus and Khazraj got excited and were about to fight each other, while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was standing on the pulpit. He got down and quieted them till they became silent and he kept quiet. On that day I kept on weeping so much so that neither did my tears stop, nor could I sleep. In the morning my parents were with me and I had wept for two nights and a day, till I thought my liver would burst from weeping. While they were sitting with me and I was weeping, an Ansari woman asked my permission to enter, and I allowed her to come in. She sat down and started weeping with me. While we were in this state, Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat down and he had never sat with me since the day they forged the accusation. No revelation regarding my case came to him for a month. He recited Tashah-hud (i.e. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is His Apostle) and then said, 'O ʿAisha! I have been informed such-and-such about you; if you are innocent, then Allah will soon reveal your innocence, and if you have committed a sin, then repent to Allah and ask Him to forgive you, for when a person confesses his sin and asks Allah for forgiveness, Allah accepts his repentance.' When Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his speech my tears ceased completely and there remained not even a single drop of it. I requested my father to reply to Messenger of Allah ﷺ on my behalf. My father said, By Allah, I do not know what to say to Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' I said to my mother, 'Talk to Messenger of Allah ﷺ on my behalf.' She said, 'By Allah, I do not know what to say to Allah's Apostle. I was a young girl and did not have much knowledge of the Qur'an. I said. 'I know, by Allah, that you have listened to what people are saying and that has been planted in your minds and you have taken it as a truth. Now, if I told you that I am innocent and Allah knows that I am innocent, you would not believe me and if I confessed to you falsely that I am guilty, and Allah knows that I am innocent you would believe me. By Allah, I don't compare my situation with you except to the situation of Joseph's father (i.e. Jacob) who said, 'So (for me) patience is most fitting against that which you assert and it is Allah (Alone) whose help can be sought.' Then I turned to the other side of my bed hoping that Allah would prove my innocence. By Allah I never thought that Allah would reveal Divine Inspiration in my case, as I considered myself too inferior to be talked of in the Holy Qur'an. I had hoped that Messenger of Allah ﷺ might have a dream in which Allah would prove my innocence. By Allah, Allah's Apostle had not got up and nobody had left the house before the Divine Inspiration came to Allah's Apostle. So, there overtook him the same state which used to overtake him, (when he used to have, on being inspired divinely). He was sweating so much so that the drops of the sweat were dropping like pearls though it was a (cold) wintry day. When that state of Messenger of Allah ﷺ was over, he was smiling and the first word he said, ʿAisha! Thank Allah, for Allah has declared your innocence.' My mother told me to go to Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I replied, 'By Allah I will not go to him and will not thank but Allah.' So Allah revealed: "Verily! They who spread the slander are a gang among you . . ." (24.11) When Allah gave the declaration of my Innocence, Abu Bakr, who used to provide for Mistah bin Uthatha for he was his relative, said, 'By Allah, I will never provide Mistah with anything because of what he said about Aisha.' But Allah later revealed: -- "And let not those who are good and wealthy among you swear not to help their kinsmen, those in need and those who left their homes in Allah's Cause. Let them forgive and overlook. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? Verily! Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful." (24.22) After that Abu Bakr said, 'Yes ! By Allah! I like that Allah should forgive me,' and resumed helping Mistah whom he used to help before. Messenger of Allah ﷺ also asked Zainab bint Jahsh (i.e. the Prophet's wife about me saying, 'What do you know and what did you see?' She replied, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I refrain to claim hearing or seeing what I have not heard or seen. By Allah, I know nothing except goodness about Aisha." Aisha further added "Zainab was competing with me (in her beauty and the Prophet's love), yet Allah protected her (from being malicious), for she had piety." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2661)

[Machine] I asked Umm Romān, who is Umm Aisha, the mother of the believers, or it was said to her, "What Allah has revealed as an excuse for her," meaning Aisha. She said, "While I was with Aisha, a woman from the Ansar entered upon us and she was saying, 'Allah has done such and such with so and so.' Aisha said, 'Why did she say this?' I said, 'Because he was one of the people who narrated the Hadith.' Aisha said, 'Which Hadith?' So I informed her. She said, 'And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr heard it?' I said, 'Yes.' So she fainted and did not regain consciousness except with a high fever. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and said, 'What is this?' She said, 'We told him about the fever that took hold of her.' He said, 'Perhaps it is because of the Hadith that she narrated.' She said, 'She sat down and said, 'By Allah, if I swear to you, you will not believe me, and if I apologize, you will not accept my apology.' She said, 'My example and your example is like the example of Yaqub and his sons. And Allah is the one whose help is sought against what you describe.' She said, 'And Allah revealed what He revealed to him, so he informed her. She said, 'Praise be to Allah, not to anyone else.'"

My husband is a sort of the meat of a lean camel placed at the top of a hill, which it is difficult to climb up, nor (the meat) is good enough that one finds in oneself the urge to take it away (from the top of that mountain). The second one said: My husband (is so bad) that I am afraid I would not be able to describe his faults-both visible and invisible completely. The third one said: My husband is a long-statured fellow (i. e. he lacks intelligence). If I give vent to my feelings about him, he would divorce me, and if I keep quiet I would be made to live in a state of suspense (neither completely abandoned by him nor entertained as wife). The fourth one said: My husband is like the night of Tihama (the night of Hijaz and Mecca), neither too cold nor hot, neither there is any fear of him nor grief. The fifth one said: My husband is (like) a leopard as he enters the house, and behaves like a lion when he gets out, and he does not ask about that which he leaves in the house. The sixth one said: So far as my husband is concerned, he eats so much that nothing is left back and when he drinks he drinks that no drop is left behind. And when he lies down he wraps his body and does not touch me so that he may know my grief. The seventh one said: My husband is heavy in spirit, having no brightness in him, impotent, suffering from all kinds of conceivable diseases, heaving such rough manners that he may break my head or wound my body, or may do both. The eighth one said: My husband is as sweet as the sweet-smelling plant, and as soft as the softness of the hare. The ninth one said: My husband is the master of a lofty building, long-statured, having heaps of ashes (at his door) and his house is near the meeting place and the inn. The tenth one said: My husband is Malik, and how fine Malik is, much above appreciation and praise (of mine). He has many folds of his camel, more in number than the pastures for them. When they (the camels) hear the sound of music they become sure that they are going to be slaughtered. The eleventh one said: My husband is Abu Zara'. How fine Abu Zara' is! He has suspended in my ears heavy ornaments and (fed me liberally) that my sinews and bones are covered with fat. So he made me happy. He found me among the shepherds living in the side of the mountain, and he made me the owner of the horses, camels and lands and heaps of grain and he finds no fault with me. I sleep and get up in the morning (at my own sweet will) and drink to my heart's content. The mother of Abu Zara', how fine is the mother of Abu Zara'! Her bundles are heavily packed (or receptacles in her house are filled to the brim) and the house quite spacious. So far as the son of Abu Zara' is concerned, his bed is as soft as a green palm-stick drawn forth from its bark, or like a sword drawn forth from its scabbard, and whom just an arm of a lamb is enough to satiate. So far as the daughter of Abu Zara' is concerned, how fine is the daughter of Abu Zara', obedient to her father, obedient to her mother, wearing sufficient flesh and a source of jealousy for her co-wife. As for the slave-girl of Abu Zara', how fine is she; she does not disclose our affairs to others (outside the four walls of the house). She does not remove our wheat, or provision, or take it forth, or squander it, but she preserves it faithfully (as a sacred trust). And she does not let the house fill with rubbish. One day Abu Zara' went out (of his house) when the milk was churned in the vessels, that he met a woman, having two children like leopards playing with her pomegranates (chest) under her vest. He divorced me (Umm Zara') and married that woman (whom Abu Zara') met on the way. I (Umm Zara') later on married another person, a chief, who was an expert rider, and a fine archer: he bestowed upon me many gifts and gave me one pair of every kind of animal and said: Umm Zara', make use of everything (you need) and send forth to your parents (but the fact) is that even if I combine all the gifts that he bestowed upon me, they stand no comparison to the least gift of Abu Zara'. 'A'isha reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: I am for you as Abu Zara' was for Umm Zara'. (Using translation from Muslim 2448a)

"The wives of the Prophet got together and sent Fatimah to the Prophet. They told her to say: 'Your wives'" -and he (the narrator) said something to the effect that they are urging you to be equitable with regard to the matter of the daughter of Abu Quhafah. She said: "So she entered upon the Prophet when he was with 'Aishah under her cover. She said to him: 'Your wives have sent me and they are urging you to be equitable with regard to the matter of the daughter of Abu Quhafah.' The Prophet said to her: 'Do you love me?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then love her.' So she went back to them and told them what he said. They said to her: 'You did not do anything; go back to him.' She said: 'By Allah, I will never go back (and speak to him) about her again.' She was truly the daughter of the Messenger of Allah. So they sent Zainab bint Jahsh." 'Aishah said: "She was somewhat my equal among the wives of the Prophet. She said: 'Your wives have sent me to urge you to be equitable with regard to the matter of the daughter of Abu Quhafa.' Then she swooped on me and abused me, and I started watching the Prophet to see if he would give me permission to respond to her. She insulted me and I started to think that he would not disapprove if I responded to her. So I insulted her and I soon silenced her. Then the Prophet said to her: 'She is the daughter of Abu Bakr.'" 'Aishah said: "And I never saw any woman who was better, more generous in giving charity, more keen to uphold the ties of kinship, and more generous in giving of herself in everything by means of which she could draw closer to Allah than Zainab. But she had a quick temper; however, she was also quick to calm down." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3946)

He said, "Your necklace was destroyed by the fathers, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up without finding water, so they performed Tayammum with clean sand. This happened because of you and your blessings. Allah has revealed to this nation leniency and ease. It was due to a flat matter, so Allah revealed your innocence from above the seven heavens. "Aishah said: 'Shall I not tell you about me and about the Prophet?' We said: 'Yes.' She said: 'When it was my night when he was with me' - meaning the Prophet -'He came back (from 'Isha' prayer), put his sandals by his feet and spread the edge of his Izar on his bed. He stayed until he thought that I had gone to sleep. Then he put his sandals on slowly, picked up his cloak slowly, then opened the door slowly and went out slowly. I covered my head, put on my vie and tightened my waist wrapper, then I followed his steps until he came to Al-Baqi'. He raised his hands three times, and stood there for a long time, then he left and I left. He hastened and I also hastened; he ran and I also ran. He came (to the house) and I also came, but I got there first and entered, and as I lay down he came in. He said: "Tell me, or the Subtle, the All-Aware will tell me.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you,' and I told him (the whole story). He said: 'So you were the black shape that I saw in front of me?' I said, 'Yes.' He gave me a nudge on the chest which I felt, then he said: 'Did you think that Allah and His Messenger would deal unjustly with you?' I said: 'Whatever the people conceal, Allah knows it.' He said: Jibril came to me when I saw you, but he did not enter upon me because you where not fully dressed. He called me but he concealed that from you, and I answered him, but I concealed that from you too. I thought that you had gone to sleep and I did not want to wake you up, and I was afraid that you would be frightened. He told me to go to Al-Baqi' and pray for forgiveness for them.' I said: 'What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Say" Peace be upon the inhabitants of this place among the believers and Muslims. May Allah have mercy upon those who have gone on ahead of us and those who come later on, and we will join you, if Allah wills."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2037)

So I took it, and I sought assistance with a supplication that he used to make when he got sick, but he did not make that supplication during his sickness. Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman as-Sulami and Hibban bin ʿAtiyyah had a dispute. ʿAbdur-Rahman said to Hibban: I know what made your companion - meaning ʿAli ؓ - audacious. He said: What is it, may you be bereft of your father? He said. Something I heard ʿAli ؓ say. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, az-Zubair and Abu Marthad on a mission, and we were all horsemen. He said: ʿGo to Rawdat Khakh, for there you will find a woman who has a letter with her from Hatib bin Abi Baltaʿah to the mushrikeen; bring it to me.ʿ So we went on our horses until we caught up with her where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told us, travelling on a camel of hers. He [Hatib] had written to the people of Makkah, telling them about the march of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We said to her. Where is the letter you have with you? She said: I do not have any letter. We made her camel kneel down and searched her luggage for it, but we did not find anything. My two companions said: We do not see any letter with her, I said: You know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not tell a lie. Then I swore: By the One by whom oaths are sworn, you will give us the letter or we will remove your clothes. She stretched out her hand to her girdle, which was wrapped around her, and brought out the letter. I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he has betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers; let me strike his neck. He said: ʿO Hatib, what made you do what you did?ʿ He said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, by Allah, it is not that I do not believe in Allah and His Messenger, but I wanted to do a favour for the people by means of which Allah might protect my family and my property, for every one of your Companions has some of his people there through whom Allah will protect his family and his property. He said: You have spoken the truth, do not say anything to him but good.ʿ ʻUmar said: O, Messenger of Allah, he betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers, let me strike his neck. He said. ʿls he not one of the people of Badr? How do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon them and said. “Do what you like, for Paradise is guaranteed for you.ʻʼ ʻUmarʻs eyes filled with tears and he said: Allah, may He be exalted, and His Messenger know best.
'Utba b. Ghazwan delivered us a sermon and he praised Allah and lauded Him, then said: Now coming to the point, verily the world has been given the news of its end and that too quite early. Nothing would be left out of it but only water left in the utensil which its owner leaves, and you are going to shift to an abode which knows no end, and you should shift with the good before you, for we have been told that a stone would be thrown at one side of the Hell and it would go down even for seventy years but would not be able to reach its bottom. By Allah, it would be fully packed. Do you find it something strange, and it has been mentioned that there yawns a distance which one would be able to cover in forty years from one end to another of Paradise, and a day would come when it would be fully packed and you must be knowing that I was the seventh amongst seven who had been with Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we had nothing to eat but the leaves of the tree until the corners of the mouth were injured. We found a sheet which we tore in two and divided between myself and Sa'd b. Malik. I made the lower garment with halt of it and so did Sa'd make the lower garment with half of it and today there is none amongst us who has not become the governor of a city from amongst the cities (of the Islamic Commonwealth) and I seek refuge with Allah that I should consider myself great whereas I am insignificant in the eye of Allah. Prophethood does not remain for ever and its impact fades with the result that it changes eventually into kingship, and you would soon come to know and experience those rulers who would come after us and see (how far they are from religion). [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited this verse: "And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people; then they will not be like you." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, who are those people that if we turn away, they will replace us and not be like us?" He struck the thigh of Salman al-Farsi and said, "This is him and his people. If faith were to be found at the Pleiades, men from Persia would attain it."

[Machine] "My father was from the sons of Asawira, and I used to differ with him regarding the book. I had two young boys with me, and when they returned from the book, they entered upon a priest, and I entered with them. The priest said to them, 'Did I not forbid you from coming with anyone?' I said to him, 'I differ with him until he loves me more than them.' He said to me, 'O Salman, if your family asks you who detained you, say it was your teacher. And if your teacher asks you who detained you, say it was your family.' He also said to me, 'O Salman, I want to convert.' I said to him, 'I am with you.' So he converted and entered a village where a woman used to differ with him. When he arrived, he said to me, 'O Salman, dig.' So I dug and found a jar of money. He poured it on my chest and began hitting his own chest, saying, 'Woe to the priest!' Then he died, and I blew into his mouth. The priests and monks gathered and attended to him. He said to them, 'I had intended to keep the money, but Allah diverted my attention from it. When the priests and monks gathered, I said to them, 'He left some money behind.' So some young men from the village took it and buried him. I said to the priests, 'Show me a knowledgeable person whom I can join.' They said, 'We do not know anyone on earth who is more knowledgeable than a man who used to go to Bayt al-Maqdis. If you leave now, you will find his donkey at the door of Bayt al-Maqdis.' So I went and found the donkey. I sat beside it until he came out, and I told him my story. He said, 'Stay here until I return to you,' but I never saw him again. He used to go to Bayt al-Maqdis only once a year in that month. When he returned, I asked him, 'What did you do with me?' He said, 'Do you still have it?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'I do not know anyone on earth who is more knowledgeable than an orphan who left Tihama and whom you would meet if you leave now.' I left and found him. He raised me to a certain place and then lowered me to another place. I encountered a tribe of Arabs who rejected me and sold me until I arrived in Medina. I heard them mentioning the Prophet and that life there was good. So I asked my family to give me a gift for a day, and they did. I left and saved some money, and then I brought it to him and placed it in front of him. He asked, 'What is this?' I said, 'It is charity.' He said to his companions, 'Eat.' But he refused to eat. I said, 'This is only one, and I waited as Allah willed.' Then I asked my family for a gift for a day, and they gave it to me. I left and saved some money, and then I brought him something better than that. I cooked food and brought it to him. He placed it in front of him and asked, 'What is this?' I said, 'It is a gift.' He said, 'In the name of Allah.' Then he said to his companions, 'Take it and eat with me.' I stood behind him, and he placed his cloak in front of him. I saw the seal of prophethood on the back of his right shoulder, which resembled an egg with the color of his skin. I said, 'I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah.' He asked, 'What is that?' I told him, and then I asked him, 'O Messenger of Allah, will the priest enter Paradise? He claims that you are a prophet.' He said, 'No one will enter Paradise except a Muslim soul.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, he informed me that you are a prophet.' He said, 'No one will enter Paradise except a Muslim soul.'"

We were sitting in the company of Hudhaifa. A man said: If I were in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would have fought by his side and would have striven hard for his causes. Hudhaifa said: You might have done that, (but you should not make a flourish of your enthusiasm). I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the Battle of Abzib and we were gripped by a violent wind and severe cold. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be him) said: Hark, the man who (goes reconnoitring and) brings me the news of the enemy shall be ranked with me on the Day of Judgment by Allah (the Glorious and Exalted). We all kept quiet and none of us responed to him. (Again) he said: Hark, a man who (goes reconnoitring and) brings me the news of the enemy shall be ranked with me on the Day of Judgment by Allah (the Glorious and Exalted). We kept quiet and none of us responded to him. He again said: Hark, a man who (goes reconnoitring and) brings me the news of the enemy shall be ranked with me on the Day of Judgtuent by Allah (the Glorious and Exalted) Then he said: Get up Hudhaifa, bring me the news of the enemy. When he called me by name I had no alternative but to get up. He said: Go and bring me information about the enemy, and do nothing that may provoke them against me. When I left him, I felt warm as if I were walking in a heated bath untill I reached them. I saw Abu Sufyan warming his back against fire I put an arrow in the middle of the bow. intending to shoot at him, when I recalled the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ" Do not provoke them against me." Had I shot at him, I would have hit him. But I returned and (felt warm as if) I were walking in a heated bath (hammam). Presenting myself before him, I gave him information about the enemy. When I had done so, I began to feel cold, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrapped me in a blanket that he had in excess to his own requirement and with which he used to cover himself while saying his prayers. So I continued to sleep until it was morning. When it was morning he said: Get up, O heavy sleeper. (Using translation from Muslim 1788)

[Machine] My mother asked, "When did you promise the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" I said, "I didn't make any promise to him since such and such happened to me." So, my mother told me, "Then go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and pray with him, and seek forgiveness for you and me." So, I went to him and prayed with him the Maghrib prayer, and he ﷺ performed what was between the two prayers. Then, he left and I followed him. He asked me, "Who is this?" I said, "Hudhayfah bin Al-Yaman." He asked, "What brings you here?" So, I informed him of what my mother had told me. He ﷺ said, "May Allah forgive you and your mother."

[Machine] Al-Qama from Sham came and entered the mosque and performed prayer in it. Then he approached a group and sat among them. A man came and sat next to me, so I said, "Praise be to Allah, I hope that Allah has answered my prayer." He said, "And who is that?" al-Qama said, "I prayed to Allah to grant me a righteous companion, and I hope it is you." Abu Al-Darda' said, "Who are you?" I said, "I am from the people of Kufa or from the people of Iraq, and then from the people of Kufa." Abu Al-Darda' said, "Didn't you have the one who possesses the secret that no one else knows, meaning Hudhayfah?" He said, "Then he said, “Do you preserve it as Abdullah used to recite?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘{By the night when it covers, and [by] the day when it appears}.’ Al-Qama said, "So I said, 'And the male and the female.' Abu Al-Darda' said, 'By Allah, whom there is no deity except Him, this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite it, from (fihi) to (fiiya).' They continued on like this until they almost turned me away from it."

narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What an excellent man is Abu Bakr, what an excellent man is 'Umar, what an excellent man is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah, what an excellent man is Usaid bin Hudair, what an excellent man is Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas, what an excellent man is Mua'dh bin Jabal, and what an excellent man is Mu'adh bin 'Amr bin Al-Jamuh." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3795)
Four persons collected the Qur'an during the lifetime of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and all of them were Ansar: Mu'adh b. Jabal, Ubayy b. Ka'b, Zaid b. Thabit, Abu Zaid. Qatada said: Anas, who was Abu Zaid? He said: He was one of my uncles. (Using translation from Muslim 2465a)
The Messenger of Allah said: The most merciful of my Ummah towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr; the one who adheres most sternly to the religion of Allah is 'Umar; the most sincere of them in shyness and modesty is 'Uthman; the best judge is 'Ali bin Abu Talib; the best in reciting the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b; the most knowledgeable of what is lawful and unlawful is Mu'adh bin Jabal; and the most knowledgeable of the rules of inheritance (Fara'id) is Zaid bin Thabit. And every nation has a trustworthy guardian, and the trustworthy guardian of this Ummah is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Jarrah." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 154)
