[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: When any one of you is afflicted with a calamity, let him say: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. O Allah, I seek reward with You for my calamity, and replace it with something better." When Abu Salamah was in his death throes, he said: "O Allah, compensate me for my loss with something better." When he died, I said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. O Allah, I seek reward with You for my calamity, and replace it with something better." She added: "I wanted to say: Replace it for me with something better than him, but I could not say that. When her waiting period was over, Abu Bakr proposed marriage to her, then 'Umar proposed marriage to her, but the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to her: "Do not be hasty, O 'Umar. I will not withhold her from you, but I have not conferred a blessing upon her yet. Her children will be given to you." She said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have no need for children; rather I want to uphold the ties of kinship." 'Umar said: "I knitted together two garments for her, and stuffed them with a kind of grass, then the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came and took her, and put her in her cradle in his room, and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was a modest and honorable man, and he would shy away from her, but he used to do that repeatedly." Then 'Ammar ibn Yasir, who was her foster brother through her mother, came and entered upon her, and he moved her cradle from his room and said: "Take away this tainted woman who was the cause of the harm caused to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came in and put his hand on his forehead, and said: "Where is Zainab? What has Zainab done?" She said: "Ammar came and took her away." He said: "Then he married her to his own cousin and kin."

I was sitting by the side of Ibn 'Umar, and we were waiting for the bier of Umm Aban, daughter of 'Uthman, and there was also 'Amr b. 'Uthman. In the meanwhile there came Ibn 'Abbas led by a guide. I conceive that he was informed of the place of Ibn 'Umar. So he came till he sat by my side. While I was between them (Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn 'Umar) there came the noise (of wailing) from the house. Upon this Ibn 'Umar said (that is, he pointed out to 'Amr that he should stand and forbid them, for): I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: The dead is punished because of the lamentation of his family. 'Abdullah made it general (what was said for a particular occasion). Ibn 'Abbas said: When we were with the Commander of the believers, 'Umar b. Khattab, we reached Baida', and there was a man under the shadow of the tree. He said to me: Go and inform me who is that person. So I went and (found) that he was Suhaib. I returned to him and said: You commanded me to find out for you who that was, and he is Suhaib. He (Hadrat 'Umar) said: Command him to see us. I said: He has family along with him. He said: (That is of no account) even if he has family along with him. So he (the narrator) told him to see (the Commander of the believers and his party). When we came (to Medina), it was before long that the Commander of the believers was wounded, and Suhaib came weeping and crying: Alas for the brother, alas for the companion. Upon this 'Umar said: Didn't you know, or didn't you hear, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:" The dead is punished because of the lamentation of his family"? Then 'Abdullah made it general and 'Umar told it of certain occasions. So I ('Abdullah b. Abu Mulaika) stood up and went to 'A'isha and told her what Ibn 'Umar had said. Upon this she said: I swear by Allah that Messenger of Allah ﷺ never said that dead would be punished because of his family's lamenting (for him). What he said was that Allah would increase the punishment of the unbeliever because of his family's lamenting for him. Verily it is Allah Who has caused laughter and weeping. No bearer of a burden will bear another's burden. Ibn Abu Mulaika said that al-Qasim b. Muhammad said that when the words of 'Umar and Ibn 'Umar were conveyed to 'A'isha, she said: You have narrated it to me from those who are neither liar nor those suspected of lying but (sometimes) hearing misleads.

Do not narrate to Abu Talha about his son until I narrate it to him. Abu Talha came (home) ; she presented to him the supper. He took it and drank water. She then embellished herself which she did not do before. He (Abu Talha) had a sexual intercourse with her and when she saw that he was satisfied after sexual intercourse with her, she said: Abu Talha, if some people borrow something from another family and then (the members of the family) ask for its return, would they resist its return? He said: No. She said: I inform you about the death of your son. He was annoyed, and said: You did not inform me until I had a sexual intercourse with you and you later on gave me information about my son. He went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him what had happened. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: May Allah bless both of you in the night spent by you! He (the narrator) said: She became pregnant. Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) was in the course of a journey and she was along with him and when Messenger of Allah ﷺ came back to Medina from the journey he did not enter (his house) (during the night). When the people came near Medina, she felt the pangs of delivery. He (Abu Talha) remained with her and Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded on. Abu Talha said: O Lord, you know that I love to go along with Messenger of Allah when he goes out and enter along with him when he enters and I have been detained as Thou seest. Umm Sulaim said: Abu Talha, I do not feel (so much pain) as I was feeling formerly, so better proceed on. So we proceeded on and she felt the pangs of delivery as they reached (Medina) and a child was born and my mother said to me: Anas, none should suckle him until you go to Messenger of Allah ﷺ tomorrow morning. And when it was morning I carried him (the child) and went along with him to Messenger of Allah (may peace beupon him). He said: I saw that he had in his hand the instrument for the cauterisation of the camels. When he saw me. he said: This is, perhaps, what Umm Sulaim has given birth to. I said: Yes. He laid down that instrument on the ground. I brought that child to him and placed it in his lap and Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Ajwa dates of Medina to be brought and softened them in his month. When these had become palatable he placed them in the mouth of that child. The child began to taste them. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: See what love the Ansar have for dates. He then wiped his face and named him 'Abdullah. (Using translation from Muslim 2144d)

[Machine] I have seen three things from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that no one before me had seen and no one after me will see. I went with him on a journey until when we were on a certain path, we passed by a woman who had a child with her. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, this child has been afflicted with a harm, and we have been afflicted with harm from him. He seizes us multiple times a day." He said, "Give him to me." So she handed him to him, and he placed him between himself and the saddle of the camel. Then he blew in his mouth three times and said, "In the name of Allah, I am the servant of Allah, get out, O enemy of Allah." Then he returned him to her and said, "We will pass by this place on the return journey, so inform us what the child is like." She said, "We went and returned and found him at that place with three sheep-like animals." He asked, "What did your child do?" She said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, we did not sense any change in him until now." He said, "Gather these sheep together." He then said, "Go to them and tell them that the Messenger of Allah orders both of you to return to your respective places." He said, "I was sitting with him on a certain day when a camel came, making noise and hitting its legs in front of him. Then his eyes shed tears and he said, 'Look at whose camel this is. It has some importance.'" So I went to search for its owner and found it belonged to a man from the Ansar. I called him and he asked, "What is the matter with your camel?" I asked, "What is the matter with it?" He said, "I don’t know, by Allah. We have worked on it and exhausted it to the point that it can no longer be watered. We decided just yesterday to slaughter it and divide its meat among ourselves." He said, "Don’t do that. Give it to me." The man said, "No, it is for you, O Messenger of Allah." So he marked it with the seal of charity and then sent it away.

[Machine] Abu Salamah came to me one day from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a saying that pleased me. He said, 'No affliction befalls any of the Muslim people, and he seeks reward from Allah for his affliction, and says, "O Allah, reward me for my affliction and replace it with something better for me," except that Allah will do so.' " Umm Salamah said, "I memorized this from him. When Abu Salamah passed away, I recalled it and said, 'O Allah, reward me for my affliction and replace it with something better for me.' Then I thought to myself, 'From where will something better than Abu Salamah come to me?' When my 'iddah (mourning period) ended, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought my permission to enter while I was dyeing a sheep's wool, and I washed my hands of the dye and gave him permission. I prepared a leather pillow stuffed with fiber for him, and he sat on it. Then he started talking to me, and when he finished his speech, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have no desire for anything except that I am a jealous woman and I fear that you will see something in me that Allah will punish me for. I am a woman who has entered the age of old age and I have children.' He said, 'Regarding what you mentioned about jealousy, Allah will remove it from you. As for what you mentioned about old age, the same has befallen me. As for what you mentioned about children, your children are my children.' Umm Salamah said, 'So I submitted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he married me.' Umm Salamah said, 'Indeed, Allah has replaced me with something better than Abu Salamah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."

[Machine] The horses of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, or he said, the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, and I was near a scorpion, so they took my aunt and some people. They brought them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he ordered them to line up for him. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, the newcomer went away and the baby is gone, and I am an old woman with no one to serve me. So who will show me kindness, as God has shown kindness to you?" He asked her, "Who is your neighbor?" She said, "Adi ibn Hatim." He said, "The one who has run away from God and His Messenger?" She said, "So who will show me kindness?" He said, "When he returned, a man came to him, and we could see that it was Ali. He said, 'Put her on a camel and he asked her.' So she went to him and said, 'You have done something that your father used to do.' He said, 'Did you visit him willingly or as a monastic?' She said, 'Such and such person came to him and got something from him, and such and such person came to him and got something from him.' He said, 'So I came to him, and there was a woman and children with him.' They mentioned their relationship to the Prophet ﷺ , so I knew that he did not have the dominion of Khusra or Caesar. He asked him, 'O Adi ibn Hatim, what has prevented you from saying there is no god but Allah? Is there any god but Allah? What has prevented you from saying Allah is the Greatest? Is there anything greater than Allah?' She said, 'So I have submitted and I saw his face light up, and he said, 'Indeed, the Jews are the ones who have earned wrath, and the Christians are the ones who have gone astray.' Then they asked him to praise Allah, and he praised Him and said, 'As for what follows, you people should submit yourself and lower yourselves from pride, as a person submits with a sa' of dates to another person with a handful of dates. Shu'bah said, 'My most knowledgeable opinion is that he said it is one date with a part of a date.' And verily, one of you will meet Allah, and yet he will say, 'What should I say?' Didn't I make you hearing and seeing? Didn't I give you wealth and children? What did you prepare?' So he will look in front of him, behind him, to his right and to his left, and he will not find anything. So the fire will not touch anyone except with his face. So fear the fire, even with a part of a date. And if you do not find that, then with a gentle word. Indeed, I do not fear poverty for you, for Allah will support you and give you victory, or He will open for you until the camels can walk between Al-Hirah and Yathrib. Indeed, what the thieving fears most is the loss of her property.' Muhammad ibn Ja'far said, 'I heard this from Shu'bah, and I recited it to him.'"

[Machine] The messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a sermon to Umm Salamah and she said, "O messenger of Allah, none of my allies whether present or absent dislikes that." He said, "None of your allies whether present or absent dislike that." She said, "O Umar, marry the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ to me." So, the Prophet ﷺ married her to him and he said to her, "Indeed, I do not diminish from what I have given to your sisters, Ruqayyah and Um Kulthum, a quilt and a mattress from the wool of a sheep." So, the messenger of Allah ﷺ used to come to her to have intimacy with her, but when she saw him, she would take her daughter Zainab and put her in her chamber. So, the messenger of Allah ﷺ would leave. And Ammar bin Yasir knew this and he was her brother through breastfeeding, so he went to her and said, "Where is this scratched and pockmarked one with whom you have annoyed the messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" So, he took her and left with her. Then the messenger of Allah ﷺ came and entered upon her and he started to touch his face in different parts of the house and said, "What did Zanab do?" She said, "Ammar came and took her and left with her." So, the messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "If you wish, I will offer a dowry for you. And if you wish, I will divorce you for my wives."

The Ansar would not marry off their daughters until they found out if there was any need for the Prophet, ﷺ , in her. So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to a man from the Ansar, 'Marry your daughter to me.' He said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah, this is certainly an honor.' The Prophet, ﷺ , said, 'I don't want her for myself, but I want her for Julaibib.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, for Julaibib?' He said, 'Yes, for Julaibib.' So he consulted her mother, and when the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came, he informed her of what her mother had said. She said, 'Julaibib, is it him?' She repeated this three times. 'Yes, by Allah, for I will not marry him.' So when he wanted to stand up to inform the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , of what she had said, the girl said, 'Who proposed to me to you?' Her mother informed her. She said, 'Are you rejecting the command of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ?' Push me, for he has not disappointed me.' So her father went to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and informed him. He said, 'What is your opinion about her?' Then he married her to Julaibib. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , went on a campaign, and when Allah granted them victory, he asked his companions, 'Have you lost anyone?' They said, 'We have lost so-and-so, and we have lost so-and-so.' He said, 'Look, have you lost anyone?' They said, 'No.' He said, 'But I have lost Julaibib.' So seek him among the slain.' They searched for him until they found him beside seven men he had killed, and then they killed him.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, here he is, beside seven men he had killed, and then they killed him.' So the Prophet, ﷺ , stood over him and said, 'He has killed seven and then they killed him. This one is from me and I am from him. This one is from me and I am from him.' He raised his head and placed him on his side, and there was no bed except that of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . Then he placed him in his grave. It is not mentioned that he was bathed. Thabit said, 'Wealth that the Ansar had would be spent but they did not find anyone who narrated about it in this world except Hammad bin Salamah. How well he narrated it.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out while having a companion. They went to a certain idol from the idols, so they slaughtered a sheep for it and placed it in the oven until it was cooked. When it was cooked, they took it out and placed it in their bags. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then proceeded, while walking slowly, during the hot days of Mecca until they reached the highest part of the valley. There, they met Zaid bin Amr bin Nufayl, who greeted one of them with the pre-Islamic greeting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Why do I see your people abandoning you?" He replied, "By Allah, it is not that they have abandoned me, but rather, it is because I see them deviating from the right path." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I went out in search of this religion until I reached the tribes of Yathrib, and I found them worshipping Allah alone, but associating partners with Him. I said, 'What kind of religion is this that I am seeking?' Then, I traveled to the tribes of Ayla and found them worshipping Allah alone, but associating partners with Him. I said, 'What kind of religion is this that I am seeking?' A scholar from the scholars of Sham said to me, 'Indeed, you are asking about a religion that no one knows except a respected old man in the peninsula.' So, I traveled until I reached him and informed him of my purpose. He said to me, 'Indeed, all those who you have seen in misguidance, asking about a religion that is the religion of Allah and His angels. There has come out in your land a Prophet or a Prophet-like person calling to this religion. Return to him, believe in him, and follow him.' So, I returned, and I did not do anything good afterwards. I carried the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the camel he was riding, and we presented to him the cooked sheep that we had. He asked, 'What is this?' We replied, 'This is a sheep we slaughtered for the idol of such and such.' He said, 'Indeed, I do not eat anything that was slaughtered for other than Allah.' This idol was made of copper, called Asaf, and its handle was made of neem tree branches. The polytheists would anoint themselves with it when they circumambulated the Ka'bah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then circumambulated it, and I also did, touching it as I passed by. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not touch it.' Zaid said, 'We completed the Tawaf, and I said to myself that I would touch it again to see what he says.' So, I touched it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Did I not forbid you from doing so?' Zaid said, 'By the One who has honored him and revealed the Book to him, I have not touched an idol until Allah honored him with what He has honored him and revealed the Book to him.' Zaid bin Amr bin Nufayl died before the Prophet's message was revealed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'A nation will come on the Day of Judgment, but he will be alone.' This Hadith is Sahih according to the conditions of Muslim, but they did not include it in his collection. Whoever ponders over this Hadith will understand the virtue of Zaid and his early acceptance of Islam before the invitation to it.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When any of you experience a calamity, say 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.' O Allah, I seek reward from You for my calamity and ask You to replace it with something better.' I used to say this when I had any difficulty. When my waiting period after the death of my husband ended, Abu Bakr proposed to me and I turned him down. Then, Umar proposed to me and I turned him down. The Prophet ﷺ sent someone to propose to me on his behalf, and I said, 'Welcome to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his messenger! Please convey to him that I am a widow and I have no guardian except Allah. As for your saying that I am a widow, Allah will take care of my children. And as for considering yourself as a replacement, I will pray to Allah to replace you with someone better. As for the guardians, there is no one among them who can testify and there is no one absent whose permission is needed. So, the Prophet ﷺ sent me a message saying, 'As for your saying that you are a widow, Allah will take care of your children. And as for your saying that there is no one except me, I will supplicate to Allah to remove your difficulty. As for the guardians, there is no one among them who can testify and there is no one absent whose permission is needed.' So, she said to her son, 'Stand up, O Umar, and let the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marry you to her.' The Prophet ﷺ then married them. He said to her, 'I will not deprive you of what I have given your sister, Fulanah, including two garments and a cushion filled with palm fibers.' The Prophet ﷺ used to visit her while Zainab was breastfeeding her child. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ came, she would give the child to him and he would place her (the child) in her (Zainab's) chamber to breastfeed her. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was generous and honorable. One day, Ammar ibn Yasir visited her when the Prophet ﷺ intended to visit her. Zainab hid in her chamber and said, 'Leave this disgraced and wretched woman (referring to herself) who has caused trouble for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and looked around the house, saying, 'Where is Zunab? Why can't I see Zunab?' Zainab said, 'Ammar came and took her away.' The Prophet ﷺ then left. He was planning to visit her one day when Ammar came and took her away."

Story of the Prophet ﷺ marriage to Zaynab b. Jaḥsh

hakim:6775-3Ibn ʿUmar Faḥaddathanī ʿAbdullāh b. ʿĀmir al-Slamī > Muḥammad b. Yaḥyá b. Ḥabbān > Jāʾ

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Zayd b. Ḥārithah’s house looking for him. Zayd was called Zayd b. Muḥammad ˹at that time˺. Then when an hour had gone by, he said, "Where is Zayd?" He then came to his house looking for him but didn’t find him. Zaynab was standing next to him in regular housework attire (or nightwear) then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then he avoided her. She said, "He’s not here, Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ˹please˺ come in." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ˹however,˺ refused to enter and she was surprised at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He turned around and was saying something under his breath that almost could not be understood from him except, maybe, for, "Glory to the Perfection of Allah, the All Mighty, Glory to the Perfection of the changer of the hearts."

Zayd came ˹back˺ to his house and his wife informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the his house, and Zayd said, "Didn’t you ask him to come in?" She said, "He avoided to do that and refused ˹to come in˺." He said, "Did you hear anything?" She said, "I heard him saying something as he turned around but I couldn’t understand him ˹fully but˺ I heard him say, 'Glory to the Perfection of Allah, the All Mighty, Glory to the Perfection of the changer of the hearts.'”

Then Zayd came to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "It’s reached me that you came to my house but you didn’t come in, Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Perhaps you have a liking for Zaynab and I shall part from her." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Hold on to your wife." However, Zayd did not have a way to ˹approach˺ her after that day. He would come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to inform him ˹of this˺ but he ˹would˺ say, "Hold on to your wife." Then Zayd parted from her and left her, and she completed her ʿIddah.

˹Soon after˺ while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting speaking to ʿĀʾishah, he was ˹suddenly˺ overcome by unconsciousness. Then when ˹the episode˺ had lifted, he smiled saying, "Who will go and tell Zaynab that Allah has married me to her from ˹above˺ the sky?", and then he recited, “...and when you say to the one Allah had favored upon and you had favored upon, hold on to your wife…” (Aḥzāb 33:37) the whole story. Then ʿĀʾishah said, "Then I started to wonder about what has reached us about her beauty. On top of that, she is the greatest runner of affairs and the best of them. Allah married her from ˹above˺ the sky, and I said, she boasts to us about this." Then ʿĀʾishah said, "Then Salmá, the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, insisted, then she told her about it, and she gave her clarifications for it."

'Ammar ibn Yasir, who was her foster brother, discovered this and came to me, saying, 'Where is that cursed woman who has annoyed the Messenger of Allah?' He took her and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and entered, striking his thigh with the side of his hand, and said, 'What has Zainab done?' I said, 'Ammar came and took her away.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'Indeed, I have built a structure using her (i.e., metaphorical language meaning marital relationships) and have not taken anything away from you that you have given me, except for two young camels and a stuffed cushion that I will return to you.' He also said, 'Indeed, if I have married seven wives, I have married them for the sake of my wives.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said, "Whoever is afflicted with a calamity should say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, I seek reward from You for my affliction and replace it with something better.' "

When Abu Salamah died, I said this supplication and every time I said it, I saw that Allah replaced my calamity with something better. I said to myself, "Who is better than Abu Salamah?"

When her waiting period ended, Abu Bakr proposed to her, but she did not marry him. Then Umar proposed to her, but she did not marry him either. Then the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) sent Umar ibn Al-Khattab to propose to her on his behalf. She said, "Inform the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) that I am a woman who is not interested in remarrying, and I am a woman who is already afflicted. And there is no witness among my guardians." So the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) went to her and mentioned this to her. He said, "Tell her that when you say, 'I am a woman who is not interested in remarrying,' I ask Allah to remove your unwillingness. And when you say, 'I am a woman who is already afflicted,' may your children be sufficient for you. And when you say, 'There is no witness among my guardians,' no one among your guardians will be a witness, nor will anyone who is absent like that."

She said to her son, "O Umar, go and marry me to the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)." So Umar married her to him. The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) used to visit her in her room to be intimate with her. But when she saw him, she would take her daughter Zainab and put her in her place. The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) noticed this, so Ammar ibn Yasir, who was her foster brother, came to her and said, "Where is that wickedness with which you have harmed the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)?" He took her and went with her. The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) came to her and entered her room, and he began to strike his forehead against the sides of the house, saying, "What did Zainab do?" She said, "Ammar came and took her away." So the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) rebuilt the house for her and said, "I will not decrease your status from what I have given to other women, two Rahas (sheep) and two Dirhams, and a bone filled with stuffing as a headrest." And he said, "If I have seven wives, I will have the same for all of them."

[Machine] Jalibib was a man from the Ansar who used to visit women and talk to them. Abu Barzah said, "I told my wife, 'Jalibib should not enter upon you.'" The companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to not marry off their daughters until they knew whether the Messenger ﷺ wanted them or not. One day, the Prophet ﷺ said to a man from the Ansar, 'O so-and-so, marry your daughter to me.' He said, 'Yes, and may our eyes find rest.' The man asked, 'Is it for myself or someone else?' He replied, 'For Jalibib.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, should I consult her mother?' He then went to her mother and said, 'Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is proposing to marry your daughter.' She replied, 'Yes, and may our eyes find rest.' He asked, 'Is it for himself or someone else?' She said, 'For Jalibib.' He questioned, 'For Jalibib?' She responded, 'By Allah, I will not marry Jalibib.' When her father stood up to go to the Prophet ﷺ , the girl asked her mother, 'Who proposed to you?' She said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' The girl then said, 'Will you reject the proposal of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or me? Accompany me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as he will not disappoint me.' So her father went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'What is your opinion regarding her?' The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'Marry her to Jalibib.' Hammaad said, 'And do you know what he supplicated for her?' Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Talhah narrated, 'What did he supplicate?' He said, 'O Allah, pour blessings on them abundantly and do not make their lives difficult.' Thabit said, 'So he married her to him.' While the Prophet ﷺ was in a battle, he asked, 'Is anyone missing?' They said, 'No.' He inquired, 'But I am missing Jalibib. Look for him among the martyrs.' They found him lying beside seven fallen enemies. Then they killed him. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'So he killed seven and they killed him? This act was from me, and I am pleased with him.' He mentioned this seven times, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed him on his arm. There was no bed that did not have the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ arm except for Jalibib's, until he was placed in his grave.' Thabit said, 'He was one of the Ansar who spent in charity whatever he possessed.'

[Machine] When it was Monday, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ removed the curtain of the room and saw Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq praying with the people. He said, "I looked at his face, and it was as if it was a page of the Quran, and he was smiling. We almost got distracted in our prayers out of joy of seeing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Abu Bakr intended to move, but when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him, he stayed in his place. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ opened the curtain and performed his prayer. On the same day, he passed away. Umar ibn Al-Khattab stood up and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not die, but he was sent to him as Moses was sent to him, and he resided among his people for forty nights. By Allah, I hope that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will live until he cuts off the hands of men from the hypocrites and silences their tongues, who claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died." Al-Zuhri reported that Anas ibn Malik informed him that he heard the speech of Umar ibn Al-Khattab about the Hereafter when he sat on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day after his death. Umar and Abu Bakr were quiet and did not speak, then Umar said, "As for the yesterday's statement, it was not as I said, and by Allah, I did not find the statement that I said in a book revealed by Allah or in a covenant given to me by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . But I hoped that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would live until he settles our affairs. If Muhammad ﷺ has indeed died, then Allah has placed among you a light, by which you will be guided. Hold fast to it, and be guided by what Allah has guided Muhammad ﷺ to. And indeed, Abu Bakr, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , is the second of the two. And he is the most deserving among you of your affairs. So pledge allegiance to him. And indeed, a group of them had already pledged allegiance to him in Saqifah Bani Sa'idah. And the pledge of the common people was on the pulpit."

[Machine] "Do not inform Abu Talhah of the death of my son until I am the one who informs him," she said. So he came and she served him dinner and a drink. He ate and drank, then she prepared herself in the best way she had never done before. When he was full and satisfied, she revealed the news to him. When she realized that he had eaten and satisfied his need, she said, "O Abu Talhah, what if a family borrowed some clothes from another family, and then the borrowing family asked for their clothes back, would it be fair for them to keep the clothes?" He said, "No." She said, "Then be patient, and your son will be returned to you." He became angry and said, "You have left me, and now you tell me about the death of my son." He went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you not see what Umm Sulaim did?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah bless both of you in your night." He then went on to say that she became pregnant that night. She and Abu Talhah were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when she went into labor. Abu Talhah stayed with her, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued on. Abu Talhah said, "O Lord, you know that it pleases me to go out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he goes out and to enter with him when he enters. But this happened, so I will stay with her." He said this while feeling very distressed. The labor pains of Umm Sulaim began, and she gave birth to a baby boy. Her mother said to me, "O Anas, do not feed him anything until you take him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tomorrow morning." Anas said, "So I spent that night comforting him as he cried until morning. I took the baby boy to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I found that he had a small date branch in his hand. When he saw the baby with me, he said, 'Perhaps Umm Sulaim gave birth?' I said, 'Yes.' He then placed the date branch in his mouth until it melted, then he put it in the mouth of the baby. The baby became peaceful, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Look at the love of the Ansar for dates.' He then wiped his face and named him Abdullah."

[Machine] Salih, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , seized the property of the people of Khaybar, except for themselves and their children. The Prophet then asked for the whereabouts of their utensils that were used in their weddings, to which they replied that the Prophet had expelled them and they had spent it. The Prophet said, "See what you say, for if you hide it from me, I will consider it as your blood and that of your descendants." Then he called two men from the Ansar and said to them, "Go to such and such a place and look for a hut with a patch on its roof. Remove the patch and bring me the utensils." They went and returned with the utensils. The Messenger of Allah struck their necks and sent for their offspring. Safiyya, who was their bride, was brought to him. He ordered Bilal to take her to his house. Bilal went with her to the house of the Messenger of Allah. He passed by her husband and brother, who were killed. When he returned to the Messenger of Allah, he said, "Glory be to Allah! O Bilal, why did you bring a virgin girl and pass by two killed men while she saw them? Don't you have any mercy?" Bilal replied, "I intended to burn her chest." The Messenger of Allah then entered with her and spent the night with her. Abu Ayub brought his sword and sat next to the mattress. He said, "If I had heard a shepherd or a monk, I would have been close to the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet then went to Bilal's house and asked, "Who is this?" Abu Ayub said, "I am Abu Ayub." The Prophet asked, "Why are you here at this time?" Abu Ayub replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I brought a virgin girl and you had killed her husband and brother, so I was concerned for your safety. I thought I would be close to the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet said, "May Allah have mercy on you, Abu Ayub," three times. The people then discussed this matter, with some saying it was his secret and others saying she was his wife. When they were leaving, they said, "Look at the Messenger of Allah, if he covers her, then she is his wife, and if he doesn't cover her, then she is his secret." The Messenger of Allah covered her, put her on his knee, and said, "Mount." The Messenger of Allah honored her by putting her foot on his knee, and he put his knee on her thigh, and they rode off together. Before that, he had offered her the choice to either be set free or be married to him, and she chose to be set free and married. And so he did.

[Machine] I do not see you except that you have been forbidden to me, so go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , perhaps you will seek something that will bring you back to me. So she left and he sat waiting for her at the corner of the well. Then the Prophet ﷺ came and a woman was combing his hair. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed Aws bin As-Samit is one whom you know to be weak in his opinion and incapable of his ability, and it has become evident from me, O Messenger of Allah, and more deserving than he is of your kindness, whether it is towards me or towards others. O Messenger of Allah, seek something that will bring me back to him by my father and mother." He said, "O Khawlah, we are not commanded anything regarding your matter, and if we are commanded, I will inform you." While she combed his hair, she finished combing one side of his head and she started on the other, and then Allah revealed: "Indeed Allah has heard the statement of her (Khawlah bint Tha'laba) that disputes with you (O Muhammad SAW) concerning her husband (Aus bin As-Samit), and complains to Allah. And Allah hears the argument between you both. Verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Seer." [Al-Mujadilah: 1] until His statement: "...and they will make you swear by Allah when you return to them that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them. Surely, Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise." [Al-Mujadilah: 2] She said, "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, he does not have a servant other than myself, and I do not have a servant other than him." He said, "So whoever does not find [a fasting alternative], then [he must endure] fasting for two months consecutively." She said, "By Allah, whenever he does not eat anything in a day, his vision becomes blurred." He said, "So whoever is unable to do so, then [he must feed] sixty poor persons." She said, "By Allah, we do not have on that day except a small amount of food." He said, "So order him to go to so-and-so and take from him a half quarter of dates, and give it in charity to sixty poor persons, and then come back to me." She said, "So I went and when he saw me he said, 'What is behind you?' I said, 'Good, and you are silent. You have been commanded to go to so-and-so and take from him a half quarter of dates, and give it in charity to sixty poor persons, and then come back to me.' So he went running until he came back with it. She said, 'And I had taken an oath from him before that that he could not carry more than five double handfuls from weakness.'

[Machine] "For the Jewish scholars, I am a visitor to the mosque of our father Ibrahim and Ismail, making a covenant. I went to the messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in Makkah, and I met him when he had just finished performing Hajj. The messenger of Allah ﷺ found me in Mina with the people, and I stood among them. When the messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at me, he said, 'Are you Abdullah ibn Salam?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Come closer.' So, I approached him. He asked, 'By Allah, I ask you, O Abdullah ibn Salam, do you find me in the Torah as the messenger of Allah?' I said, 'Our Lord, describe him.' He said, 'Then Jibril came to him until he stood in front of the messenger of Allah ﷺ, then he recited to him, "Say: He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent."' Then the messenger of Allah ﷺ recited it to us. Ibn Salam said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the messenger of Allah.' Then he went to Madinah and kept his Islam hidden. When the messenger of Allah ﷺ migrated to Madinah, I was on top of a palm tree, and I heard a noise in the city. I said, 'What is this?' They said, 'It is the messenger of Allah who has arrived.' So, I threw myself down from the top of the palm tree and then I approached him and greeted him. Then I went back, and my mother said, 'By Allah, if Musa ibn Imran (Moses) was here, he would not have thrown himself down from the top of the palm tree like that.' I said, 'By Allah, I went down because I am eager for the arrival of the messenger of Allah ﷺ, just as Musa ibn Imran was sent.'"

[Machine] I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting in the mosque. The people said, "This is Adi bin Hatim, and he used to be a Christian." I came to him without any security or script, and when I was given the opportunity, he held my hand and said, "I hope that Allah will unite his hand with mine." He then walked with me until we met a woman and a child with her. They said, "We have a need from you." So he went with her and fulfilled her need, then he took me by the hand until we reached his house. I was given a cushion to sit on, and I sat in front of him. He praised and glorified Allah, and then said, "What led you to think that no one is worthy of being worshiped except Allah?" Then he spoke for a while and said, "Does it surprise you or does it harm you that Allah is said to be greater? Do you know anything greater than Allah?" I said, "No." He said, "Verily, the Jews are despised, and the Christians are astray." I said, "I am a Hanif (upright) Muslim." I saw his face light up with joy. Then he ordered me to go to a man from the Ansar, and I went to him in the middle of the day. While I was with him in the evening, some people came to him wearing woolen clothes from this Nimar. He prayed, and then he stood and advised them. He said, "A bushel or half a bushel, even if it is with a handful, should be used to protect one's face from the heat of Hellfire. Even if it is with half a date, one of you should meet Allah with something to say. Did I not make for you hearing and sight?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Did I not make for you wealth and children?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Then where are those things that you have prepared for yourselves?" He looked in front of him, behind him, to his right, and to his left, and he did not find anything that would protect his face. So let one of you protect his face from the Fire, even if it is with half a date. If he cannot find that, then with a good word. Indeed, I do not fear poverty for you, for Allah is your Helper and Provider until the Day of Resurrection. The distance between Al-Tharib and Al-Hira is not far, and what is feared most for its livestock is theft. So I started to say to myself, "Where are the thieves of Thay?"

[Machine] The horses of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came with a scorpion, so they took my aunt and some people. When they came to him (the Prophet) ﷺ , they made way for him. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, the one who has come has left, the child has been severed, and I am an old woman and I have no one to serve me. So may Allah bless whoever helps me." He said, "Who is your guest?" She said, "Adi ibn Hatim." He said, "Which one fled from Allah and His Messenger?" She said, "So may Allah bless whoever helps me." So when Adi returned, there was a man with him who seemed to be Ali. He said, "Salih, carry her loads." She said, "So I asked him and he ordered a donkey. I said, 'You have done what your father used to do.'" She said, "Go to him as a person in need or as a monk, for so and so came to him and he was affected by him, and so and so came to him and he was affected by him. So I went to him, and there was a woman and children or a child with him. He mentioned their relation to the Prophet ﷺ , so I knew that he was not a king like Khosrau and Caesar. He said, "O Adi, what prevents you from saying 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no god but Allah)? Is there any god other than Allah?" He said, "What prevents you from saying 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the greatest)? Is there anything greater than Allah?" So I embraced Islam, and I saw his face light up and he said, "Indeed, the Jews are those who are cursed, and indeed, the Christians are those who are astray." Then some people came to him and praised Allah, and he praised Him. Then he said, "Now, O people, it is for you to be humble before His grace, as a person humbles himself before a measure of food with a measured handful." Shu'bah said, "And most of what I know is that he said with a date, splitting a date. Indeed, one of you will meet Allah and He will say, 'Did I not make you hearing and seeing? Did I not grant you wealth and children? So what have you brought?' So he will look to his right, left, front, and behind him, but he will not find anything. So he will not fear the Fire except by Allah's face. So fear the Fire, even if it is with half a date. And if you do not find that, then with a good word. Indeed, I do not fear poverty for you, for Allah will help you and give you victory, or He will open up for you until the she-camel enters between two mountains, the fear of which is greater, that Thamud feared."

[Machine] I was sent by Ibn Ayyash bin Abi Rabia to Umar bin Abdul Aziz for his needs. I entered upon him and there was a scribe with him who was writing. I greeted him and he replied with greetings. Then, I said, "Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Faithful, and the mercy of Allah." He said, "O son of Ziyad, we do not deny the first thing you said." The scribe was reading to him the grievances that came from Basra. Then, he told me to sit, so I sat on a step near the door while he listened to the scribe reading. Umar was sighing heavily. When he finished, he dismissed everyone in the room until only I and him were present. He sat in front of me and placed his hands on my knees. Then, he said, "O son of Abi Ziyad, have you worn this armor?" I said, "Yes, I have a padded armor made of wool and I have rested from what we were in." Then, he asked me about the righteous men and women of Madinah, and he asked me about the matters he had commanded them in Madinah, and I informed him. Then, he said, "O son of Abi Ziyad, don't you see what has happened to me?" I said, "Rejoice, O Commander of the Faithful, for I hope good for you." He said, "Never, never." Then, he cried until I also mourned for him. I said, "O Commander of the Faithful, some of your actions are praiseworthy, for I hope good for you." He said, "Never, never. I neither insult nor am I insulted, I neither strike nor am I struck, I neither harm nor am I harmed." He said, and then he cried until I also mourned for him. So, I stayed until he fulfilled my needs, and he wrote to my master asking him to sell me, but he refused and then freed me.
