[Machine] "Umar and Ali are our most knowledgeable and Ubbay is our most reciter. And indeed, we leave out many of Ubbay's melodies, and Ubbay used to say that he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I do not leave it for anything. And Allah, blessed and exalted, says: "Whatever verses We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring better than it or similar to it" [Al-Baqarah 106]."

ahmad:21085Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > Sufyān > Ḥabīb / Ibn Abū Thābit > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

[Machine] "Umar is the most knowledgeable among us and Ubayy is the best reciter among us, and indeed we leave what Ubayy says (in terms of recitation) and Ubayy says, 'I have taken it from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so I will not leave it,' and Allah says, 'We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten' [Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 106]."

ahmad:21086al-Aʿmash > Ḥabīb b. Abū Thābit > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

[Machine] Umar delivered a sermon to us from the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and Ali said, "Ubayy is our most knowledgeable, and Ubayy is our best reciter. We leave nothing from Ubayy's statement, and Ubayy heard certain things from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I did not. Ubayy says, 'I do not leave anything that I have heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ,' and after Ubayy, a book was revealed, containing the narration of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari from Ubayy bin Ka'b."

[Machine] He said, "I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I said: 'A man has sexual intercourse with his wife and does not have an ejaculation.' He said: 'He should wash the part of his body that came into contact with the woman, perform ablution and pray.'"

ahmad:21092ʿAffān > Ḥammād > Ḥumayd > Anas > ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmitiʾan Ubay b. Kaʿb

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ read a verse to me and I read it back to him differently from how Ubay ibn Ka'b recited it. So I asked him, "Who recited it to you?" He said, "The Prophet ﷺ recited it to me." I said, "By Allah, I recited it to you this way and that way." Ubay said, "I do not have in my heart any Islam that I had that day." So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you not recite this verse to me like this and that?" He said, "Yes." I said, "But he claims that I recited it to him like this and that." He struck his hand on my chest and it went away. Then I did not find anything from him afterwards. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Jibreel and Mika'il came to me and Jibreel said, 'Recite the Qur'an precisely.' Mika'il said, 'Increase it for him.' He said, 'Recite it with two letters,' and he said, 'Increase it for him until it reached seven letters.' He said, 'Every letter is a reward.'"

[Machine] Nothing has bothered me in my heart since I became Muslim, except that I read a verse and it reminded me of a conversation and did not mention worship in it.

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, did not reveal in the Tawrah or the Injil anything like Umm Al-Quran (Al-Fatihah), which is the seven oft-recited, and (Allah said) it is divided between Myself and My slave will have what he asked for.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 914)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not teach you a Surah that is not found in the Torah, the Psalms, the Gospel, or the Quran?" I said, "Yes." He said, "I hope not to leave this door until you learn it." Then the Messenger of Allah got up and I got up with him, and he took my hand and started narrating to me until we reached the door. I reminded him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what was the Surah you told me about?" He said, "How do you recite when you stand to pray?" He recited the Opening Chapter of the Book and said, "It is it, and it is the seven oft-repeated verses and the Great Quran that I have been given." Abdullah said, "I asked my father about Al-Ala' bin Abdur-Rahman and Suhail bin Abi Salih, and he preferred Al-Ala' over Suhail and said, 'I have not heard anyone mentioning Al-Ala' in a negative way.' Abu Abdur-Rahman and Abu Salih are more beloved to me than Al-Ala'." This Hadith was narrated by Rifa'a bin Rafi' from Ubayy bin Ka'b.

[Machine] Zuhair in his speech criticized people for following their own opinions and not adhering to what is agreed upon and not specified. He said, "Hurry up and bring it to me." It was brought to him and he said, "Oh enemy of yourself, have you reached a point where you give opinions to the people in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "I did not do that, but my companions told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said so." He asked, "Who are your companions?" He replied, "Ubayy ibn Ka'b, Abu Ayyub, and Rifaa'ah ibn Rafa'ah." So I turned to what this young boy was saying, and Zuhair said in his speech, "This boy does not say what I say." I said, "We used to do it in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He asked, "Did you ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it?" He said, "We used to do it during his time and we did not wash ourselves." He gathered the people and clapped, and the people agreed that water is only made of water, except for two men: Ali ibn Abi Talib and Mu'adh ibn Jabal. They said, "When circumcision is surpassed, then washing is necessary." Ali said, "O Commander of the Believers, if the people knew about this, they would think that these are the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." So he sent to Hafsah, and she said, "I do not have knowledge about it." He sent to Aisha, and she said, "When circumcision is surpassed, then washing is necessary." Umar then became angry and said, "I am not informed that anyone does it and does not wash except I will punish him severely."

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I performed an act last night." The Prophet asked, "What is it?" He replied, "There were women with me in my house, and they told me that you don't recite the evening prayer. So, I led them in prayer and I prayed eight units of prayer and also the witr prayer." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent, and then he said, "We considered his silence as his approval of what he had done."

He said, "Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say: Among us and Musa, there was a gathering of the Children of Israel, when a man came to him and said, 'Do you know anyone more knowledgeable than you?' He replied, 'No.' So Allah inspired His servant Khidr to ask Musa for the way to meet him. Allah made for him a sign in the form of a fish. It was said to him, 'If you lose the fish, then return, for you will find it.' Ibn Mus'ab said in his narration: So they continued until they reached a place where Musa said to his boy, 'Bring us our lunch, for indeed, we have suffered much fatigue from this journey of ours.' At that moment, they lost the fish. Then they continued, following the traces of the fish in the sea. Musa said, 'They are those whom Allah has mentioned in His Book.'" (Surah Al-Kahf)

Umar said, 'If a person owns one or two valleys, he would seek a third one for himself.' Ibn Abbas said, 'The abdomen of a human being can only be filled with dust. Then Allah accepts the repentance of the one who repents.' Umar said to Ibn Abbas, 'From whom did you hear this?' He said, 'From Ubayy.' Umar said, 'If he (Ubayy) comes in the morning, then inform me.' So Umar returned to Umm Al-Fadl and mentioned that to her. She said, 'And what do you have to do with these conversations with Umar?' Ibn Abbas feared that Ubayy might have forgotten (to come), so his mother said, 'Perhaps Ubayy may have forgotten.' So he (Ibn Abbas) went with Umar, and they went to Ubayy. Ubayy came out to them while he had performed ablution. He said, 'I have had a wet dream, so I washed my penis or anus. I doubted (whether that is enough).' Umar said, 'Is that sufficient?' He said, 'Yes.' Umar asked, 'Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He replied, 'Yes.' Umar asked him about what Ibn Abbas had said, and Ubayy verified it."

Ubayy ibn Ka'b narrated to me from the Prophet ﷺ that Musa stood among the Bani Israel to deliver a sermon. They asked him, 'Who is the most knowledgeable among the people?' He said, 'I am.' So Allah inspired him, 'I have a slave who is more knowledgeable than you.' He said, 'My Lord, show him to me.' It was said, 'Take a fish and put it in a basket, then wherever you lose it, it will be there.' So he took a fish and put it in a basket, and he and his companion walked along the shore until they reached a rock. Musa laid down and fell asleep while the fish started moving in the basket until it fell into the sea. Allah made the water flow back, and the fish came back to life and moved along with its companion on the shore until they came to the rock. They found a man covered with a garment and Musa greeted him, saying, 'Do you have any food? We are in need of it, for our journey has exhausted us.' The man replied, 'Indeed, we have encountered hardship on our journey.' The calamity was not removed from them until they passed by the thing that Allah commanded them. Musa exclaimed, 'Did you forget when we took refuge at the rock and I forgot about the fish? None other than Satan made me forget it.' They continued on their way, until when they reached the people of a town, they sought food from its inhabitants, but they refused to show them hospitality. Then they saw a wall about to collapse, and Khidr stood it up. Sufyan demonstrated it with his hands, raising them up like this. Then he placed his palms on top of each other, raising them up. Musa said, 'If you wished, you could have taken payment for it.' Khidr replied, 'This is the parting between me and you.'" Ibn Abbas said, "The first forgetfulness was unintentional." The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Musa. If he had been patient and continued to learn from him, we would have seen more wonders from him."

[Machine] From Bahz and Ibn Uyaynah, to the extent that Nawf claimed that Musa was not the companion of al-Khidr. He said: "The enemy of Allah is lying!" Ubbay ibn Ka'b narrated to us from the Prophet ﷺ who said: Musa stood up to give a sermon to the Children of Israel, and he was asked: "Who is the most knowledgeable among the people?" He said: "I am." So Allah admonished him, as knowledge was not returned to Him. He said: "Rather, there is a servant of Mine at the meeting place of the two seas who is more knowledgeable than you." Musa said: "O Lord, how can I meet him?" He said: "Take a fish and put it in a basket, then set out and wherever you lose the fish, then that is where you will find him." So Musa set out with his servant, walking, until they reached the rock. Musa laid down and the fish became turbulent in the basket and came out into the sea, so Allah seized him with a current of water like a taut rope. And the fish was like a flock for him. Sufyan said: "He knotted his thumb and forefinger together and opened a gap between them." He said: "So they set out until the next morning." Musa said to his servant: "{Bring] us our breakfast; indeed, we have suffered in this journey of ours [much] fatigue." (Quran 18:62) He said: "And he did not find the place [in the rock] until he passed by it." (Quran 18:64) So they returned to their footsteps and told the story of their footsteps. He said: "And Musa had a wondrous trace of the fish, and the fish had its flock." So he narrated the Hadith.

Moses had been delivering sermons to his people. And he made this remark: No person upon the earth has better knowledge than I or nothing better than mine. Thereupon Allah revealed to him: I know one who is better than you (in knowledge) or there is a person on the earth having more knowledge than you. Thereupon he said: My Lord, direct me to him. It was said to him: Keep a salted fish as a provision for journey. The place where that fish would be lost (there you will find that man). So he set forth and a young slave along with him until they came to a place Sakhra. but he did not find any clue. So he proceeded on and left that young man there. The fish began to stir in water and the water assumed the form of an ark over the fish. The young man said: I should meet Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) and inform him, but he was made to forget and when they had gone beyond that place, he (Moses) said to the young man: Bring breakfast. We have been exhausted because of the journey, and he (Moses) was not exhausted until he had crossed that (particular) place (where he had) to meet Khadir, and the youth was reminded and said: Did you not see that as we reached Sakhra I forgot the fish and it is satan alone who has made me forgetful of it'? It is strange that he has been able to find way in the ocean too. He said: This is what we sought for us. They returned retracing their steps, and he (his companion) pointed to him the location (where) the fish (had been lost). Moses began to search him there. He suddenly saw Khadir wrapped in a cloth and lying on his back. He said to him: As-Salamu-'Alaikum. He removed the cloth from his face and said: Wa 'Alaikum-us-Salam! Who are you? He said: I am Moses. He said: Who Moses? He said: Moses Of Bani Isra'il. He said: What brought you here? He said: I have come so that you may teach me what you have been taught of righteousness. He said: You shall have to bear with me, and how can you have patience about a thing of which you have no comprehensive knowledge? You will not have patience when you see me doing a thing I have been ordered to do. He said: If Allah pleases, you will find me patient, nor shall I disobey you in aught. Khadir said: If you follow me, don't ask me about anything until I explain it to you. So they went on until they embarked upon a boat. He (Khadir) made a hole in that. Thereupon he (Moses) said: You have done this so that you may drown the persons sitting in the boat. You have done something grievous. Thereupon he said: Did I not tell you that you will not be able to bear with me? Thereupon he (Moses) said: Blame me not for what I forgot and be not hard upon me for what I did. (Khadir gave him another chance.) So they went on until they reached a place where boys were playing. He went to one of them and caught hold'of one (apparently) at random and killed him. Moses (peace be upon him) felt agitated and said: You have killed an innocent person not guilty of slaying another. You have done something aboininable. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: May Allah have mercy upon us and Moses. Had he shown patience he would have seen wonderful things, but fear of blame, with respect to his companion, seized him and he said: If I ask anything after this, keep not company with me. You will then have a valid excuse in my case, and had he (Moses) shown patience he would have seen many wonderful things. He (the narrator) said: Whenever he (the Holy Prophet) made mention of any Prophet, he always said: May there be mercy of Allah upon us and upon my brother so and so. They, however, proceeded on until they came to the inhabitants of a village who were very miserly. They went to the meeting places and asked for hospitality but they refused to show any hospitality to them. They both found in that village a wall which was about to fall. He (Khadir) set it right. Thereupon he (Moses) said: If you so liked. you could get wages for it. Thereupon he said: This is the partince, of ways between me and you, and, taking hold of his cloth, he said: Now I will explain to you the real significance (of all these acts) for which you could not show patience. As for the boat, it belonged to the poor people working on the river and I intended to damage it for there was ahead of them (a king) who seized boats by force. (When he came) to catch hold of it he found it a damaged boat, so he spared it (and later on) it was set right with wood. So far as the boy is concerned, he has been, by very nature, an unbeliever, whereas his parents loved him very much. Had he grown up he would have involved them in wrongdoing and unbelief, so we wished that their Lord should give them in its place one better in purity and close to mercy. And as for the wall it belonged to two orphan boys in the city and there was beneath it a (treasure) belongin to them,... up to the last verse. (Using translation from Muslim 2380c)

ahmad:21119ʿAbdullāh > ʿAbdullāh b. Ibrāhīm al-Marwazī

Yaʿla bin Muslim and ʿAmr bin Dinar and some others narrated the narration of Saʿid bin Jubair. Narrated Saʿid: While we were at the house of Ibn ʿAbbas, Ibn ʿAbbas said, "Ask me (any question)" I said, "O Abu ʿAbbas! May Allah let me be sacrificed for you ! There is a man at Kufa who is a storyteller called Nauf; who claims that he (Al-Khadir's companion) is not Moses of Bani Israel." As for ʿAmr, he said to me, "Ibn ʿAbbas said, "(Nauf) the enemy of Allah told a lie." But Yaʿla said to me, "Ibn ʿAbbas said, Ubai bin Kaʿb said, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Once Moses, Messenger of Allah ﷺ, preached to the people till their eyes shed tears and their hearts became tender, whereupon he finished his sermon. Then a man came to Moses and asked, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is there anyone on the earth who is more learned than you?' Moses replied, 'No.' So Allah admonished him (Moses), for he did not ascribe all knowledge to Allah. It was said, (on behalf of Allah), 'Yes, (there is a slave of ours who knows more than you ).' Moses said, 'O my Lord! Where is he?' Allah said, 'At the junction of the two seas.' Moses said, 'O my Lord ! Tell I me of a sign whereby I will recognize the place.' " ʿAmr said to me, Allah said, "That place will be where the fish will leave you." Yaʿla said to me, "Allah said (to Moses), 'Take a dead fish (and your goal will be) the place where it will become alive.' " So Moses took a fish and put it in a basket and said to his boy-servant "I don't want to trouble you, except that you should inform me as soon as this fish leaves you." He said (to Moses)." You have not demanded too much." And that is as mentioned by Allah: 'And (remember) when Moses said to his attendant .... ' (18.60) Yushaʿ bin Noon. (Saʿid did not state that). The Prophet ﷺ said, "While the attendant was in the shade of the rock at a wet place, the fish slipped out (alive) while Moses was sleeping. His attend an said (to himself), "I will not wake him, but when he woke up, he forgot to tell him The fish slipped out and entered the sea. Allah stopped the flow of the sea. where the fish was, so that its trace looked as if it was made on a rock. ʿAmr forming a hole with his two thumbs an index fingers, said to me, "Like this, as in its trace was made on a rock." Moses said "We have suffered much fatigue on this journey of ours." (This was not narrated by Saʿid). Then they returned back and found Al-Khadir. ʿUthman bin Abi Sulaiman said to me, (they found him) on a green carpet in the middle of the sea. Al-Khadir was covered with his garment with one end under his feet and the other end under his head. When Moses greeted, he uncovered his face and said astonishingly, 'Is there such a greeting in my land? Who are you?' Moses said, 'I am Moses.' Al- Khadir said, 'Are you the Moses of Bani Israel?' Moses said, 'Yes.' Al-Khadir said, "What do you want?' Moses said, ' I came to you so that you may teach me of the truth which you were taught.' Al- Khadir said, 'Is it not sufficient for you that the Torah is in your hands and the Divine Inspiration comes to you, O Moses? Verily, I have a knowledge that you ought not learn, and you have a knowledge which I ought not learn.' At that time a bird took with its beak (some water) from the sea: Al-Khadir then said, 'By Allah, my knowledge and your knowledge besides Allah's Knowledge is like what this bird has taken with its beak from the sea.' Until, when they went on board the boat (18.71). They found a small boat which used to carry the people from this sea-side to the other sea-side. The crew recognized Al-Khadir and said, 'The pious slave of Allah.' (We said to Saʿid "Was that Khadir?" He said, "Yes.") The boat men said, 'We will not get him on board with fare.' Al-Khadir scuttled the boat and then plugged the hole with a piece of wood. Moses said, 'Have you scuttled it in order to drown these people surely, you have done a dreadful thing. (18.71) (Mujahid said. "Moses said so protestingly.") Al-Khadir said, didn't I say that you can have no patience with me?' (18.72) The first inquiry of Moses was done because of forgetfulness, the second caused him to be bound with a stipulation, and the third was done intentionally. Moses said, 'Call me not to account for what I forgot and be not hard upon me for my affair (with you).' (18.73) (Then) they found a boy and Al-Khadir killed him. Yaʿla- said: Saʿid said 'They found boys playing and Al-Khadir got hold of a handsome infidel boy laid him down and then slew him with knife. Moses said, 'Have you killed a innocent soul who has killed nobody' (18.74) Then they proceeded and found a wall which was on the point of falling down, and Al-Khadir set it up straight. Saʿid moved his hand thus and said 'Al-Khadir raised his hand and the wall became straight. Yaʿla said, 'I think Saʿid said, 'Al-Khadir touched the wall with his hand and it became straight (Moses said to Al-Khadir), 'If you had wished, you could have taken wages for it.' Saʿid said, 'Wages that we might had eaten.' And there was a king in furor (ahead) of them" (18.79) And there was in front of them. Ibn ʿAbbas recited: 'In front of them (was) a king.' It is said on the authority of somebody other than Saʿid that the king was Hudad bin Budad. They say that the boy was called Haisur. 'A king who seized every ship by force. (18.79) So I wished that if that boat passed by him, he would leave it because of its defect and when they have passed they would repair it and get benefit from it. Some people said that they closed that hole with a bottle, and some said with tar. 'His parents were believers, and he (the boy) was a non-believer and we (Khadir) feared lest he would oppress them by obstinate rebellion and disbelief.' (18.80) (i.e. that their love for him would urge them to follow him in his religion, 'so we (Khadir) desired that their Lord should change him for them for one better in righteousness and near to mercy' (18:81). This was in reply to Moses' saying: Have you killed an innocent soul.'? (18.74). 'Near to mercy" means they will be more merciful to him than they were to the former whom Khadir had killed. Other than Saʿid, said that they were compensated with a girl. Dawud bin Abi ʿAsim said on the authority of more than one that this next child was a girl. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4726)

[Machine] I heard the Prophet of Allah, ﷺ , mentioning regarding Musa, that he was reminding his people of the days of Allah, the bounties of Allah, and the trials and tribulations that came upon them. He said, "I don't know of anyone on earth who is better than me or has more knowledge than me." Allah then revealed to him, "I know about the goodness that is with someone, and who that person is. Indeed, on earth there is a person who has more knowledge than you." He said, "O Lord, show me who he is." He was told to take a fish and they both set out. Eventually, they passed by a village whose people refused to host them. Then, he told him the story of the ship, and how the king caused it to be damaged, but he did not seek to benefit from it. As for the boy, he had a seal put on him the day he was born, indicating that he would become a disbeliever. But his parents were kind to him, and if he were to grow up, he would trouble them with his sinning and disbelief. And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city.

[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ in his statement, "And remind them of the Days of Allah" [Ibrahim 5], he said, "With the blessings of Allah."

ahmad:21129ʿAbdullāh > Abū ʿAbdullāh al-ʿAnbarī > Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī > Muḥammad b. Abān > Abū Isḥāq > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

A similar report was narrated from Abu Hurairah, but was not attributed to the Prophet (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4360)

ahmad:21130ʿAbdullāh > Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥīm Abū Yaḥyá al-Bazzāz > Abū al-Walīd Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik > Qays > Abū Isḥāq > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās > Ubay

[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ, when he mentioned the prophets, he would start with himself, then he would say, "May the mercy of Allah be upon us and upon Hud and upon Saleh."

ahmad:21131ʿAbdullāh > Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād al-Makkī > ʿAbdullāh b. Maymūn al-Qaddāḥ > Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Ṣādiq > Ibn Shihāb > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh > Ibn ʿAbbās

[Machine] Marani man from the Banu Fazarah followed by Moses, and I said, "He is Al-Khidr.", and Al-Fazari said, "He is another man." Then Ubbay ibn Ka'b passed by us, and Ibn Abbas called him, so I invited him and asked him, "Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention the one followed by Moses?" He said, "Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'While Moses was sitting with a group of the Children of Israel, a man said to him, 'Is there anyone more knowledgeable about Allah than you?' Moses said, 'I don't think so.' Then Allah revealed to him, 'Yes, My servant Al-Khidr.' So he asked for the way to reach him, and Allah made the whale a sign for him. Whoever loses it would have a profound loss. And it is the story that Allah recounted to Anas ibn Malik through Ubay ibn Ka'b."

ahmad:21132Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > Ḥumayd > Anas > Ubay b. Kaʿb

"I had no confusion in my mind from that time I embraced Islam, except when I recited a verse and another man recited it differently. I said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me this.' And the other man said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me too.' So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Prophet of Allah, did you not teach me such and such a verse?' He said: 'Yes.' The other man said: 'Did you not teach me such and such a verse?' He said: 'Yes. Jibril and Mika'il, peace be upon them, came to me, and Jibril sat on my right and Mika'il on my left. Jibril, peace be upon him, said: "Recite the Quran with one way of recitation.' Mika'il said: 'Teach him more, teach him more- until there were seven modes of recitation, each of which is good and sound.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 941)

ahmad:21133ʿAbdullāh > Muḥammad b. Abū Bakr al-Muqaddamī > Bishr b. al-Mufaḍḍal > Ḥumayd > Anas

[Machine] Ubay said, "Nothing has entered my heart since I embraced Islam, except the mentioning of a narration from Ubayy about Yahya ibn Sa'id."
