I went to Ubayy b. Ka’b and said him : I am confused about Divine decree, so tell me something by means of which Allah may remove the confusion from my mind. He replied : were Allah to punish everyone in the heavens and in the earth. He would do so without being unjust to them, and were he to show mercy to them his mercy would be much better than their actions merited. Were you to spend in support of Allah’s cause an amount of gold equivalent to Uhud, Allah would not accept it from you till you believed in divine decree and knew that what has come to you could not miss you and that what has missed you could not come to you. Were you to die believing anything else you would enter Hell. He said : I then went to ‘Abd Allah b. MAs’ud and he said something to the same effect. I next went to Hudhaifah b. al-Yaman and he said something to the same effect. I next went to Zaid b. Thabit who told me something from the Prophet (May peace be upon him) to the same effect. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4699)

[Machine] I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said, "May Allah brighten the face of a person who hears from us a hadith and memorizes it until he conveys it to others, for many carriers of knowledge are not knowledgeable themselves, and many carriers of knowledge pass it on to others who are more knowledgeable than them. There are three qualities that a Muslim's heart should never be deprived of: sincerity in actions for the sake of Allah, advising the rulers, and remaining in the congregation. Indeed, their supplication encompasses those behind them. He also said, "Whoever's main concern is the Hereafter, Allah will bring together his affairs, make contentment in his heart, and the world will come to him while he is in need. And whoever's intention is the world, Allah will scatter his affairs, make poverty between his eyes, and he will only receive from the world what was destined for him." We also asked about the middle prayer, which is the Dhuhr prayer.

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, the orators among the Ansar stood up, and some of them said, "O group of Muhajirin, indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to appoint a man from among you and a man from among us as his companions, so we see that this matter should be continued by two men, one from you and the other from us." The orators of the Ansar continued in this manner. Then Zaid ibn Thabit stood up and said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was one of the Muhajirin, and the Imam should only be from the Muhajirin, and we are his supporters, just as we were the supporters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Then Abu Bakr stood up and said, "May Allah reward you all well, O group of Ansar, and may your speaker be firm in his statement. And by Allah, if you were to do otherwise, we would not have been honest with you."

They said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is a boy from the Banu Najjar tribe who has with him thirteen Surahs that Allah has revealed to you." The Prophet ﷺ was delighted and said, "O Zaid, learn for me the scripture of the Jews, for by Allah, I do not trust the Jews concerning my scripture." Zaid said, "So I learned their scripture for him. It took me fifteen nights until I mastered it, and I would read to him their books when they wrote to him, and I would respond to their letters when he wrote."
