0. Introduction (7/14)
[Machine] "Do not consider yourself knowledgeable until you become a learner, and do not consider yourself knowledgeable in a subject until you apply it. It is enough sin for you to continue being argumentative. It is enough sin for you to continue being lazy. It is enough sin for you to continue being a liar by speaking about matters other than Allah Almighty."
[Machine] I once said to Al-Hasan regarding something he said, "O Abu Sa'id, this is not how jurists speak." He replied, "Woe onto you! Haven't you seen that a jurist is merely an ascetic in this world, desiring the hereafter, knowledgeable in religious affairs, and continuously dedicated to worshipping his Lord?"
[Machine] He was asked, "Who is the most knowledgeable among the people of Medina?" He replied, "The one who fears his Lord the most, the Almighty and the Exalted."
[Machine] "The true scholar is the one who fears Allah the Almighty."
[Machine] "The true scholar is the one who does not despair people from the mercy of Allah, does not give them permission in committing sins, does not make them feel safe from the punishment of Allah, and does not divert them away from the Quran to other sources. Indeed, there is no goodness in worship that lacks knowledge and understanding, and there is no knowledge that lacks comprehension, and there is no recitation without reflection."
[Machine] "Ali is a scholar who is truly knowledgeable, and does not make people lose hope in the mercy of Allah, nor does he reassure them about the punishment of Allah. He does not permit them to commit sins against Allah. Indeed, there is no goodness in worship that lacks knowledge, and no goodness in knowledge that lacks understanding, and no goodness in recitation that lacks reflection."
[Machine] "I find a people who learn for other than action, and understand for other than worship, and seek the dunya (worldly life) through the actions of the hereafter, and wear the skins of sheep while their hearts are harder than stone. They deceive through me or they deceive me?" So, I swore by me I will make available to them a trial that will leave the patient confused in it."
[Machine] He wrote to him, "O Amir al-Mu'minin, I swear by Allah that I intended nothing but good with it, for it to be an imam who speaks with knowledge and acts with immorality, so that he misleads people and leads them astray."
[Machine] "Whoever wants his religion to be honored, should not enter the presence of the ruler, should not spend time with women, and should not argue with people of desires."
[Machine] Maymun ibn Mihran wrote to me, "Beware of disputes and arguing about religion, and do not argue with a knowledgeable person or an ignorant person. As for the knowledgeable person, he will withhold his knowledge from you and not care about your actions. And as for the ignorant person, he will intimidate you and not obey you."
[Machine] "Solomon, son of David, peace be upon him, said to his son: 'Avoid disputes, for their benefits are little and they only ignite animosity among siblings.'"
[Machine] I heard Umar ibn Abdul Aziz saying, "Whoever makes their religion a subject of disputes, they will move frequently."
[Machine] "He who worships without knowledge, his actions will cause more harm than benefit. Whoever judges his words based on his actions, his words will be minimal except for what he means. And whoever uses his religion for disputes, his movements will be plentiful."
[Machine] "Take the religion of the Bedouin and the young boy from the scholars, and keep away from anything else." Abu Muhammad said, "His movement (i.e. transferring of thoughts) is abundant, meaning he moves from one opinion to another."
0.30 [Machine] In the vicinity of desires
[Machine] "When you see a group of people producing something without consulting their leaders, they are laying the foundations of misguidance."
[Machine] The English translation of the provided text is: "What do you tempt the children of Adam with, O Satan?" They replied, "We tempt them with everything." Satan said, "Do you tempt them with seeking forgiveness?" They said, "Never! That is something they associate with faith in God." Satan said, "I will stay among them and encourage them towards desires that they will not seek forgiveness for from Allah." So, he spread among them worldly desires.
[Machine] I do not know which of the two blessings is greater upon me, whether it is being guided to Islam or being protected from these desires.
[Machine] A man who fasted all his life and spent his whole life in worship, then was killed between the corner (of the Ka'bah) and the Station (of Ibrahim). Allah will gather him on the Day of Resurrection with those whom it is perceived were upon guidance."
[Machine] Salman said, "If a man places his head on the Black Stone and fasts during the day and stands in prayer at night, Allah will raise him up on the Day of Resurrection with his desire."
[Machine] Ali, be like the bee among people, for there is nothing in birds that does not belittle it. If birds knew the blessings within their innards, they would not do this to it. Mix with people with your tongues, bodies, and enrich them with your actions and hearts. Indeed, a person will have what he has earned, and he will be on the Day of Judgment with those whom he loves.
[Machine] "Yes, the Minister of Knowledge is a good opinion."
[Machine] "To have private gatherings where he mentions his sins and seeks forgiveness from Allah Almighty for them."
0.31 [Machine] Who permitted speaking when the meaning is understood
[Machine] "When we inform you about the meaning of the event, it is sufficient for you."
[Machine] "He would neither hasten nor delay when he spoke, and Al-Hasan would both precede and postpone when he spoke."
[Machine] Al-Hasan used to speak with one original saying, while conversations differed.
[Machine] He (Ibn Umar) said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The example of the hypocrite is like a sheep between two Rabad (pasture) or between two flocks." So Ibn Umar said, "No, he said this and that," and whenever he heard the Prophet ﷺ , he did not add or subtract anything from it, nor did he exceed it or fall short of it.
[Machine] "Indeed, if they spoke of it as they heard it, it would have been better for them."
[Machine] "I do not listen to the conversation musically, so I insist on following what I have heard."
0.32 Virtue of Knowledge and the Scholar
[Machine] Mujahid saw a peacock in his dream, as if he was praying in the Kaaba, and the Prophet ﷺ was at the door of the Kaaba. He said to him, "O Abdullah, remove your mask and show your recitation." He said, "So it seemed that he understood this as a sign that he expanded in the conversation afterward."
[Machine] "The world is cursed, cursed except for a person who learns good or teaches it."
People are ˹of two types˺: the scholar and the student, and between that is ignorance, with no goodness in it.
[Machine] They used to say, "The death of a scholar is a gap in Islam that cannot be filled. No matter the difference between night and day,".
[Machine] "A gathering in which knowledge is disputed is more beloved to me than the amount of salah (prayer) I can perform. Perhaps someone will hear a word and benefit from it for a year or for the rest of their life."
[Machine] Sufyan said, "I do not know of a better action than seeking knowledge and preserving it for those whom Allah wishes good for."
[Machine] And (he) said, Hasan ibn Salih said, "Indeed, people are in need of this knowledge in their religion, as they are in need of food and drink in their worldly life."
[Machine] Abu Darda said, "Learn before knowledge is taken away, because the taking away of knowledge is the taking away of scholars. And the scholar and the learner are equal in reward."
[Machine] About Dahhak, he said, "But be scholars of the divine law because of what you have been teaching from the scripture." [Al-Imran 79]. He said, "It is obligatory upon everyone who reads the Qur'an to be knowledgeable."
[Machine] About Al-Hasan, if it weren't for the religious scholars and the scribes prohibiting them [the people], Al-Hasan said, "The wise scholars."
[Machine] Sa'id ibn Jubayr said, "{Be devoutly obedient to Allah}" [Surah Al-Imran 79]. He further stated, "Scholars of jurisprudence."
[Machine] I heard Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah say, "Knowledge requires preservation, action, listening, attentiveness, and dissemination."
[Machine] "The most ignorant of people are those who abandon what they know, and the most knowledgeable of people are those who act upon what they know, and the best of people are those who are most humble before Allah, the Almighty."
Obsession with worldly desires leaves one constantly anxious and unfulfilled
Those who are obsessed are never satisfied: (1) those who are obsessed with ˹sacred and salvific˺ knowledge are never satisfied with it, and (2) those who are obsessed with worldly possessions are never satisfied with them.
So, whoever makes the hereafter his concern, and devotes himself to it and focuses on it, Allah will take care of his worldly affairs, and He will put contentment in his heart. But whoever makes this world his concern, and devotes himself to it and focuses on it, Allah will expose his ruin, and He will make him ˹obsess over˺ his needs: such that he will not wake up except as a needy person, and he will not reach evening ˹while having pursued his needs˺ except as a needy person ˹anxious, feeling unfulfilled˺.
The one who possesses knowledge and the one who possesses worldly possessions are not equal, and both of them cannot be satisfied. As for the person of knowledge, their contentment with the Merciful (Allah) increases. But as for the person of the world, they indulge in transgression. Then Abdullah recited, "No! Indeed, man transgresses because he sees himself self-sufficient." (Quran, Surah Al-Alaq: 7) Someone else said, "Indeed, only the scholars fear Allah among His servants." (Quran, Surah Fatir: 28)
[Machine] They are both never satisfied, the student of knowledge and the student of worldly affairs.
