He saw a Hullah of Sira' silk being offered for sale at the door of the Masjid. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, why don't you buy this and wear it on Fridays, and (when meeting) the delegations when they come to you?" The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "This is only worn by one who has no share in the Hereafter." After that some (other) Hullahs were brought to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he gave me one. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you gave me this when you said what you said about it!" The Prophet [SAW] said: "I did not give it to you to wear it! Rather I gave it to you to give away or to sell." So 'Umar gave it to a brother of his son on his mother's side who was an idolater. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5295)   

أَنَّهُ رَأَى حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهَا لِيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» قَالَ فَأَتَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعْدُ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَكَسَانِي مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ «إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا كَسَوْتُكَهَا لِتَكْسُوَهَا أَوْ لِتَبِيعَهَا» فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مِنْ أُمَّهِ مُشْرِكًا خَالَفَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ نَجِيحٍ رَوَاهُ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَأَى حُلَّةً  

ʿUmar saw a silk suit being sold, so he said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Why don't you buy it so that you may wear it when delegates come to you, and also on Fridays?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is worn only by him who has no share in the Hereafter." Afterwards the Prophet ﷺ sent to ʿUmar a silk suit suitable for wearing. ʿUmar said to the Prophet, "You have given it to me to wear, yet I have heard you saying about it what you said?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I sent it to you so that you might either sell it or give it to somebody else to wear." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5841)   

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ ابْتَعْتَ هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةَ فَلَبِسْتَهَا لِلْوَفْدِ وَلِيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بِحُلَّةٍ سِيَرَاءَ مِنْ حَرِيرٍ كَسَاهَا إِيَّاهُ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ «تَبِيعُهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوهَا»  

[Machine] That Umar went out and saw a decorated garment being sold in the market. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, buy it and wear it on Friday when the delegation comes to you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is only worn by those who have no manners." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought three garments from it. Umar wore one, Ali wore one, and Usamah wore one. Umar came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, you said about it what you said." He said, "Sell it and fulfill your need with it or tear it into pieces to distribute it among your wives." 9500 Imran ibn Musa al-Basri informed us, he said, Abdul Warith informed us, he said, Yahya informed us, he is the son of Ishaq, he said, Salim asked, "What is Istibrak?" I said, "It is what is thick from the dip and rough from it." He said, "I heard Abdullah ibn Umar saying, Umar ibn al-Khattab saw a man wearing a silk garment, so he brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, buy this.' And he narrated the hadith."  

أَنَّ عُمَرَ خَرَجَ فَرَأَى حُلَّةَ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ تُبَاعُ فِي السُّوقِ فَأَتَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اشْتَرِهَا فَالْبَسْهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ حِينَ يَقْدَمُ عَلَيْكَ الْوَفْدُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ» قَالَ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِثَلَاثِ حُلَلٍ مِنْهَا فَكَسَا عُمَرُ حُلَّةً وَكَسَا عَلِيًّا حُلَّةً وَكَسَا أُسَامَةَ حُلَّةً فَأَتَاهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ ثُمَّ بَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ قَالَ «بِعْهَا فَاقْضِ بِهَا حَاجَتَكَ أَوْ شَقِّقْهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ نِسَائِكَ» 9500 أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بَصْرِيٌّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى وَهُوَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ قَالَ سَالِمٌ مَا الْإِسْتَبْرَقُ؟ قُلْتُ مَا غَلُظَ مِنَ الدِّيبَاجِ وَخَشُنَ مِنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ رَأَى عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ مَعَ رَجُلٍ حُلَّةَ سُنْدُسٍ فَأَتَى بِهَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اشْتَرِ هَذِهِ وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ  

'Umar b. at-Khattab found a silk garment being sold in the market; he purchased it and brought it to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, get it and adorn yourself (by wearing it) on the 'Id (days) and for the delegation. Thereupon, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: That is the dress of one who has no share (in the Hereafter). 'Umar stayed there so long as Allah wished. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him a silk cloak. 'Umar came back with that to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah. you said that it is the dress of one who has no share in the Hereafter, but then you sent it to me. Thereupon, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You sell it and meet your need (with its proceeds). (Using translation from Muslim 2068d)  

وَجَدَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ حُلَّةً مِنْ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ تُبَاعُ فِي السُّوقِ فَأَخَذَهَا فَأَتَى بِهَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ابْتَعْ هَذِهِ فَتَجَمَّلْ بِهَا لِلْعِيدِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِنَّمَا هَذِهِ لِبَاسُ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ» فَلَبِثَ عُمَرُ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ أَنْ يَلْبَثَ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِحُلَّةِ دِيبَاجٍ فَأَقْبَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ حَتَّى أَتَى بِهَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قُلْتَ إِنَّمَا هَذِهِ لِبَاسُ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَيَّ بِهَذِهِ الْجُبَّةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «تَبِيعُهَا أَوْ تُصِيبُ بِهَا حَاجَتَكَ»  

ʿUmar saw a silken cloak over a man for sale and requested the Prophet ﷺ to buy it in order to wear it on Fridays and while meeting delegates. The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is worn by the one who will have no share in the Hereafter." Later on Messenger of Allah ﷺ got some silken cloaks similar to that one, and he sent one to ʿUmar. ʿUmar said to the Prophet ﷺ "How can I wear it, while you said about it what you said?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have not given it to you to wear, but to sell or to give to someone else." So, ʿUmar sent it to his brother at Mecca before he embraced Islam. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2619)   

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ابْتَعْ هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةَ فَتَلْبَسَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَإِنْ جَاءَ الْوَفْدُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا بِحُلَلٍ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ مِنْهَا بِحُلَّةٍ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ كَيْفَ أَلْبَسُهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ «لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنْ تَبِيعُهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوهَا» فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ إِلَى أَخٍ لَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ  

[Machine] I saw on Zainab, the daughter of the Prophet (PBUH), a silk shirt that was different from those of Al-Zubaydi. It was narrated by Al-Zuhri from Anas that he saw it on Umm Kulthum.  

رَأَيْتُ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ ابْنَةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَمِيصَ حَرِيرٍ سِيَرَاءَ خَالَفَهُ الزُّبَيْدِيُّ رَوَى عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّهُ رَأَى عَلَى أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ  

[Machine] He told him that he saw Umm Kulthum, the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ , wearing a striped garment made of silk. Abu Abd al-Rahman said, "This is more likely to be true than what came before it, and with Allah is success."  

أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ رَأَى عَلَى أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ ابْنَةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بُرْدَ سِيَرَاءَ وَالسِّيَرَاءُ الْمُضَلَّعُ بِالْقَزِّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَهَذَا أَوْلَى بِالصَّوَابِ الَّذِي قَبْلَهُ وَبِاللهِ التَّوْفِيقُ  

that he had seen Um Kulthum, the daughter of Messenger of Allah ﷺ , wearing a red silk garment. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5842)   

«أَنَّهُ رَأَى عَلَى أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بُرْدَ حَرِيرٍ سِيَرَاءَ»  

that he had seen Um Kulthum, the daughter of Messenger of Allah ﷺ , wearing a red silk garment. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5842)   

«أَنَّهُ رَأَى عَلَى أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بُرْدَ حَرِيرٍ سِيَرَاءَ»  

that he had seen Um Kulthum, the daughter of Messenger of Allah ﷺ , wearing a red silk garment. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5842)   

أَنَّهُ رَأَى عَلَى أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بُرْدَ سِيَرَاءَ  

[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ : "He did not see any harm in women wearing silk and fine cloth." Abu Abdur-Rahman said to me, "This is a denial from the hadith of Ubaidullah ibn Umar."  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ «أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَرَى بِالْقَزِّ وَالْحَرِيرِ لِلنِّسَاءِ بَأْسًا» قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ هَذَا مُنْكَرٌ مِنْ حَدِيثِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ  

“Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3588)  

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ»  

I heard Ibn Az-Zubair delivering a sermon, saying, "Muhammad said, 'Whoever wears silk in this world, shall not wear it in the Hereafter." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5833)  

مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ «مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَلَنْ يَلْبَسَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter, and whoever does not wear it in the Hereafter will not enter Paradise." Allah says, "Their clothing therein will be of silk." [Surah Al-Hajj: 23]. Shu'bah contradicted him, narrated by Abu Dhubyan from Ibn Zubair from Umar.  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَا يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ لَمْ يَدْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ» قَالَ اللهُ {وَلِبَاسُهُمْ فِيهَا حَرِيرٌ} [الحج 23] خَالَفَهُ شُعْبَةُ رَوَاهُ عَنِ أَبِي ذُبْيَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ عُمَرَ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever wears it in this worldly life will not wear it in the Hereafter." Ibn Zubair said: "Indeed, whoever wears it in this worldly life will not enter Paradise." Allah, the Most High, said: "And their clothing therein will be silk." [Hajj 23]. Hafsah bint Sireen stopped him (from continuing his speech).  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ لَبِسَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» قَالَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ إِنَّهُ مَنْ لَبِسَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَدْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {وَلِبَاسُهُمْ فِيهَا حَرِيرٌ} [الحج 23] وَقَفَتْهُ حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ سِيرِينَ  

[Machine] "Do not wear silk, for whoever wears it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter." Ibn Umar said: "Then, by Allah, he will not enter Paradise." Allah the Almighty said, "And their clothing therein will be silk." [Surah Al-Hajj, verse 23]  

«لَا تَلْبَسُوا الْحَرِيرَ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ لَبِسَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ إِذًا وَاللهِ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {وَلِبَاسُهُمْ فِيهَا حَرِيرٌ} [الحج 23]  

I heard 'Umar bin al-Khattab ؓ say in his khutbah that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿ Whoever wears silk in this world will not be clothed with it in the Hereafter.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 123)   

سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُكْسَاهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ»  

I heard Ibn Az-Zubair delivering a sermon, saying, "Muhammad said, 'Whoever wears silk in this world, shall not wear it in the Hereafter." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5833)   

حَدَّثَنِي أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ»  

“Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3588)  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ»  

[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever wears silk in this world will not have any share in the hereafter.' Bakr ibn Abdullah al-Muzani contradicted them, narrating it from Ibn Umar from the Prophet ﷺ ."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَلَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» خَالَفَهُمْ بَكْرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْمُزَنِيُّ رَوَاهُ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ  

[Machine] Narrated by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he said, "Indeed, only those who have no character wear silk." Shu'bah contradicted him and reported it from Qatadah, who reported it from Bishr ibn al-Muhataf.  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ» خَالَفَهُ شُعْبَةُ رَوَاهُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ بِشْرِ بْنِ الْمُحْتَفِزِ  

from the Prophet ﷺ who said, "Silk is worn by the one who has no portion ˹in the hereafter.˺" (Using translation from Aḥmad 5364)  

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ»  

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited it." A summary: Abu Abdur Rahman Abu Nu'man, his name is Muhammad ibn al-Fadl and his title is Arim. He had mixed with people towards the end of his life. Sulaiman ibn Harb said, "If Abu Nu'man agrees with me, I do not care who opposes me, meaning Arim." Abu Abdur Rahman said, "He was one of the trustworthy before he mixed with people." Abu Bishr narrated it from Ali al-Bariqi from Ibn Umar, who said: "We used to converse..."  

«نَهَى عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ» مُخْتَصَرٌ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ اسْمُهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ وَلَقَبُهُ عَارِمٌ وَكَانَ قَدِ اخْتَلَطَ فِي آخِرِ عُمُرِهِ قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ إِذَا وَافَقَنِي أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ فَلَا أُبَالِي مَنْ خَالَفَنِي يَعْنِي عَارِمًا قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَكَانَ أَحَدُ الثِّقَاتِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَخْتَلِطَ وَقَفَهُ أَبُو بِشْرٍ رَوَاهُ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ الْبَارِقِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ كُنَّا نَتَحَدَّثُ  

[Machine] "He who wears it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter." Hushaym narrated it from Abu Bishr from Yusuf ibn Mahak from Ibn Umar.  

أَنَّهُ مَنْ لَبِسَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ خَالَفَهُ هُشَيْمٌ رَوَاهُ عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مَاهَكٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ  

"I heard 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair say: 'Do not let your womenfolk wear silk, for I heard 'Umar bin Al-Khattab say: The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: Whoever wears it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5305)  

مَنْ لَبِسَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited it. Hajjaj narrated it from Shu'bah, from Yunus ibn Muslim ibn Abi Sagheerah.  

نَهَى عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَالَفَهُ حَجَّاجٌ رَوَاهُ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ أَبِي صَغِيرَةَ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited it. Abu Abdur-Rahman said, "This is a mistake, and what came before it is closer to being correct."  

نَهَى عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ هَذَا خَطَأٌ وَالَّذِي قَبْلَهُ أَشْبَهُ بِالصَّوَابِ  

[Machine] I heard Ibn Umar say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the wearing of silk. Qatadah contradicted this, narrating it from Abu Sheikh from Muawiyah.  

سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ» [403] خَالَفَهُ قَتَادَةُ رَوَاهُ عَنْ أَبِي شَيْخٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ  

When a group of the Companions of Muhammad [SAW] were with him: "Do you know that the Prophet of Allah [SAW] forbade wearing gold unless it was broken (into smaller pieces)?" They said: "By Allah, yes." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5151)   

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَعِنْدَهُ جَمْعٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ؟ قَالُوا اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ  

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , prohibited wearing silk. They said, 'O Allah, yes.' Yahya ibn Abi Kathir contradicted him, narrating from Abu Shaykh, from Abu Himman, from Muawiyah."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ «نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ؟» قَالُوا اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ خَالَفَهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ رَوَاهُ عَنْ أَبِي شَيْخٍ عَنْ أَبِي حِمَّانَ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ  

That when Mu'awiyah went on Hajj, he gathered together a group of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah [SAW] at the Ka'bah and said to them: "I adjure you by Allah, did the Messenger of Allah [SAW] forbid wearing gold?" They said: "Yes." He said: "And I bear witness to that." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5153)   

أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَامَ حَجَّ جَمَعَ نَفَرًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْكَعْبَةِ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللهَ هَلْ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ [404] خَالَفَهُ حَرْبٌ رَوَاهُ عَنْ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَبِي شَيْخٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ حِمَّانَ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ  

[Machine] That Muawiyah, during the year of the Hajj, gathered a group of companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the Kaaba. He said to them, "I adjure you by Allah, did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibit the wearing of silk?" They replied, "Yes." He said, "I bear witness to that." This narration was reported by Al-Awza'i from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir from Abu Shaykh from Jumaz from Muawiyah.  

أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَامَ حَجَّ جَمَعَ نَفَرًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْكَعْبَةِ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ هَلْ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ رَوَاهُ الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي شَيْخٍ الْهُنَائِيِّ عَنْ جُمَّازَ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ  

[Machine] I ask you by Allah, have you not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding the wearing of silk garments? They said, "Yes, O Allah." He said, "And I bear witness that Umara bin Bashir contradicted it, who narrated it from Al-Awza'i, from Yahya, from Abu Ishaq, from Himaan."  

أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللهَ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ ثِيَابِ الْحَرِيرِ؟ قَالُوا اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ خَالَفَهُ عُمَارَةُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ رَوَاهُ عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ عَنْ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ حِمَّانَ  

[Machine] I remind you by Allah, did you not hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibiting silk? They said, "O Allah, yes." He said, "And I bear witness that Ukayb ibn 'Aliqamah contradicted him." Al-Awza'i narrated it from Yahya who said, "Abu Ishaq informed me from Abu Jumaz."  

أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللهَ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ؟ قَالُوا اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ خَالَفَهُ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَلْقَمَةَ رَوَاهُ عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ عَنْ يَحْيَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ أَبِي جُمَّازٍ  

[Machine] I ask you, have you not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding silk garments? They replied, "Yes, Allahumma (O Allah), we have heard." He said, "And I bear witness that Yahya ibn Hamza contradicted them. He narrated it from Al-Awza'i, from Humran, from Muawiyah."  

أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللهَ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ ثِيَابِ الْحَرِيرِ؟ قَالُوا اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ خَالَفَهُمْ يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمْزَةَ رَوَاهُ عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ عَنْ حُمْرَانَ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ  

[Machine] I ask you by Allah, have you not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibit silk garments? They said, "O Allah, He said that and I bear witness." Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Qatadah told us that he had memorized from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, and his narration is more correct. And success comes from Allah.  

أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ ثِيَابِ الْحَرِيرِ؟ قَالُوا اللهُمَّ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ قَالَ لَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَتَادَةُ أَحْفَظُ مِنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ وَحَدِيثُهُ أَوْلَى بِالصَّوَابِ وَبِاللهِ التَّوْفِيقُ  

[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , "Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter. Even if they enter Paradise, the people of Paradise will wear it and they will not." Abu Abdul Rahman said to us, "This is a mistake. The correct version is from Dawood Al-Sarraj."  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَإِنْ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ لَبِسَهُ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ وَلَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ» قَالَ لَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ هَذَا خَطَأٌ وَالصَّوَابُ دَاوُدُ السَّرَّاجُ  

“Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3588)  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ»  

[Machine] "Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter." Shu'bah said: Hisham said: Qatadah reported that Zaid brought this up to the Prophet ﷺ . Saeed ibn al-Faraj al-Naysaburi told us, Yahya ibn Abi Bukayr told us, Shu'bah narrated to us from Qatadah, from Dawud al-Sarraj, from Abu Sa'id, who said: Shu'bah reported to me and Hisham also informed me. And Hisham had better access to him than me, as he used to transmit directly to the Prophet ﷺ .  

«مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» قَالَ شُعْبَةُ قَالَ هِشَامٌ إِنَّ قَتَادَةَ رَفَعَ ذَا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ [407] 9537 أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ دَاوُدَ السَّرَّاجِ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ قَوْلَهُ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَأَخْبَرَنِي هِشَامٌ وَكَانَ أَصْحَبَ لَهُ مِنِّي إِنَّهُ كَانَ يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ  

[Machine] "Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the hereafter, and if he enters Paradise, the people of Paradise will wear it and he will not."  

«مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَإِنْ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ لَبِسَهُ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ وَلَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ»  

"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] enjoined seven things upon us, and forbade seven things for us. He forbade to us gold rings, silver vessels, Al-Mayathir, Al-Qassiyah, Al-Istabraq, Ad-Dibaj, and silk." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5309)  

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِسَبْعٍ وَنَهَانَا عَنْ سَبْعٍ نَهَانَا عَنْ خَوَاتِيمِ الذَّهَبِ وَعَنْ آنِيَةِ الْفِضَّةِ وَالْحَرِيرِ وَالدِّيبَاجِ وَالْإِسْتَبْرَقِ وَالْمَيَاثِرِ الْحُمْرِ وَالْقَسِّيِّ  

"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] enjoined seven things upon us, and forbade seven things for us. He forbade to us gold rings, silver vessels, Al-Mayathir, Al-Qassiyah, Al-Istabraq, Ad-Dibaj, and silk." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5309)  

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِسَبْعٍ وَنَهَانَا عَنْ سَبْعٍ عَنْ خَوَاتِيمِ الذَّهَبِ وَآنِيَةِ الْفِضَّةِ وَعَنِ الْمَيَاثِرِ وَالْقَسِّيَّةِ وَالْإِسْتَبْرَقِ وَالدِّيبَاجِ وَالْحَرِيرِ  

[Machine] That Uqaydira Duma presented a silk robe to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore it. The people admired it, so he said, "Do you admire this? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the handkerchiefs of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh in paradise are better than it." And he gave it to 'Umar, and 'Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, you dislike it and yet you give it to me?" He said, "O 'Umar, I only sent it to you so that you may use it as a shroud and with it cover a face that will be struck with it, and that is before he forbade silk."  

أَنَّ أُكَيْدِرَ دُومَةَ أَهْدَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ جُبَّةَ سُنْدُسٍ فَلَبِسَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَجِبَ النَّاسُ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ «أَتَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ هَذِهِ؟ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَمَنَادِيلُ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ أَحْسَنُ مِنْهَا» وَأَهْدَاهَا إِلَى عُمَرَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ تَكْرَهُهَا وَأَلْبَسُهَا قَالَ «يَا عُمَرُ إِنِّي إِنَّمَا أَرْسَلْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَبْعَثَ بِهَا وَجْهًا تُصِيبُ بِهَا وَذَلِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ»  

"Hudhaifah asked for some water and the chief brought water in a silver vessel. He threw it aside, then he apologized to them for what he had done, and said: 'I told him before not to do that. I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say: Do not drink from vessels of gold and silver, and do not wear Ad-Dibaj or silk. They are for them in this world, and for you in the Hereafter." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5301)  

اسْتَسْقَى حُذَيْفَةُ فَأَتَاهُ دِهْقَانٌ بِمَاءٍ فِي إِنَاءٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَحَذَفَهُ ثُمَّ اعْتَذَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ مِمَّا صَنَعَ بِهِ وَقَالَ إِنِّي نَهَيْتُهُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَا تَشْرَبُوا فِي إِنَاءِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَلَا تَلْبَسُوا الدِّيبَاجَ وَلَا الْحَرِيرَ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَنَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ»  

[Machine] "O Prophet of Allah, why don't you buy it for yourself?" He replied, "Indeed, it is only worn by those who have no manners."  

عُمَرُ أَلَا أَشْتَرِيَهُ لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُهُ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ»  

"I entered upon Anas bin Malik when he came to Al-Madinah and greeted him with Salam. He said: 'Where are you from?' I said: 'I am Wafid bin 'Amr bin Sa'd bin Mu'adh.' He said: 'Sa'd was the greatest and most virtuous of people.' Then he wept a great deal, then he said: 'The Messenger of Allah [SAW] sent a delegation to Ukaidir the ruler of Dumah, who sent him a Jubbah made of Ad-Dibaj interwoven with gold. The Messenger of Allah [SAW] put it on, then he stood on the Minbar and sat, without speaking, then he came down and the people started touching it with their hands. He said: 'Are you admiring this? The handkerchiefs of Sa'd in Paradise are more beautiful than what you see.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5302)  

إِنَّ سَعْدًا كَانَ أَعْظَمَ النَّاسِ وَأَطْوَلَهُ ثُمَّ بَكَى فَأَكْثَرَ الْبُكَاءَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ إِلَى أُكَيْدِرَ صَاحِبِ دُومَةَ بَعْثًا فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ جُبَّةَ دِيبَاجٍ مَنْسُوجَةً فِيهَا الذَّهَبُ فَلَبِسَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَامَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَقَعَدَ فَلَمْ يَتَكَلَّمْ وَنَزَلَ فَجَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَلْمِسُونَهَا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ فَقَالَ «تَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ هَذِهِ لَمَنَادِيلُ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ أَحْسَنُ مِمَّا تَرَوْنَ؟»  

"The Prophet [SAW] put on a Qaba' of Ad-Dibaj that had been given to him, but he soon took it off and sent it to 'Umar. It was said to him: 'How soon you took it off, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Jibril, peace be upon him, prohibited me from wearing it.' Then 'Umar came weeping and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you disliked something but you gave it to me.' He said: 'I did not give it to you to wear it, rather I gave it to you to sell it.' So 'Umar sold it for two thousand Dirhams." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5303)  

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرًا يَقُولُ لَبِسَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَبَاءً مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ أُهْدِيَ لَهُ ثُمَّ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ نَزَعَهُ فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا إِلَى عُمَرَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ قَدْ أَوْشَكْتَ مَا نَزَعْتَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ نَهَانِي عَنْهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ يُبْكِي فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَرِهْتَ أَمْرًا وَأَعْطَيْتَنِيهِ قَالَ «إِنِّي لَمْ أُعْطِكَهُ لِتَلْبَسَهُ إِنَّمَا أَعْطَيْتُكَهُ تَبِيعُهُ فَبَاعَهُ عُمَرُ بِأَلْفَيْ دِرْهَمٍ»  

[Machine] Asma brought to me a cloak made of Tayalisa fabric. It had a patch made of Kisrawani shibar and its lining was made of silk, embroidered. She said, "This is the cloak of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." When he passed away, it was with Aisha. Hushaym narrated it from Abdul Malik, from Ata, from Abu Asma, from Umm Salamah.  

أَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيَّ أَسْمَاءُ جُبَّةً مِنْ طَيَالِسَةٍ لَهَا لَبِنَةٌ مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ كِسْرَوَانِيٍّ شِبْرٍ وَفَرْجَيْهَا يَعْنِي حَرِيرًا مَكْفُوفَيْنِ فَقَالَتْ هَذِهِ جُبَّةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا قُبِضَ كَانَتْ عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ [411] خَالَفَهُمْ هُشَيْمٌ رَوَاهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَسْمَاءَ عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ had a cloak made of Tayalisa fabric, its collar was lined with Kisrawani fur. Abu Abdullah said, "This is not accurate, the correct version is what came before it."  

كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ جُبَّةٌ مِنْ طَيَالِسَةٍ لَبِنَتُهَا دِيبَاجٌ كِسْرَوَانِيُّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ لَيْسَ هَذَا مَحْفُوظًا وَالَّذِي قَبْلَهُ الصَّوَابُ  

[Machine] "Beware of wearing silk garments, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade wearing silk clothing except in this manner."  

«إِيَّاكُمْ وَلِبَاسَ الْحَرِيرِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْ لِبَاسِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلَّا هَكَذَا وَرَفَعَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ السَّبَّابَةَ وَالْوُسْطَى»
