"I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he saw that I was dressed in scruffy clothes. He said: 'Do you have any wealth?' I said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah, all kinds of wealth.' He said: 'If Allah gives you wealth then let its effect be seen on you.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5223)
That he came to the Prophet [SAW] wearing shabby clothes. The Prophet [SAW] said to him: "Do you have any wealth?" He said: "Yes, all kinds of wealth." He said: "What kinds of wealth?" He said: "Allah has given me camels, cattle, sheep, horses and slaves." He said: "If Allah has given you wealth, then let the effect of Allah's blessing and generosity be seen on you." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5224)
"I entered upon the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he saw me looking scruffy. The Prophet [SAW] said: 'Do you have anything?' He said: 'Yes, Allah has given me all kinds of wealth.' He said: 'If you have wealth, let it be seen on you.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5294)
52.74 [Machine] Mentioning the recommended and disliked elements of clothing.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wears the garment of fame in this worldly life, Allah will clothe him in the garment of humiliation in the Hereafter."
52.75 [Machine] The translation of "لُبْسُ الصُّوفِ" into English is "Wearing wool.
[Machine] "He made a black cloak from wool for the Prophet ﷺ, so he wore it. But when he sweated, he found the smell of the wool unpleasant, so he took it off. He used to like pleasant smells."
52.76 [Machine] The Judge
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Ali, ask Allah for guidance and righteousness." He prohibited me from wearing the red robe and the striped garment. Shu'bah differed from Ashim bin Kulayb, who narrated it from Abu Burdah bin Abu Musa.
[Machine] I heard Ali say that the Prophet ﷺ forbade me from being severe and excessive. Abu Abdur Rahman said, "The narration of Shu'bah is correct, and what came before it is incorrect."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ prohibited three things: he prohibited me from sealing with gold, he prohibited me from wearing a kisyya garment, and he prohibited me from reciting the Quran while in the state of ruku'. 'Amr bin Dinar contradicted them, narrating from Abu Jafar, from Ali, as a mursal (hadith).
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah taught me and I do not say to you that he has forbidden me from wearing a seal ring made of gold, or from reciting while bowing or prostrating, or from wearing a robe made of silk, or from riding on the red-dappled horse.
52.77 [Machine] Prohibition of wearing revealing clothing
[Machine] I heard Ali saying, "I gifted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a robe made of silk, and he sent it to me. I wore it and noticed anger on his face. He said, 'Certainly, I did not give it to you for you to wear it.' He then ordered me to give it to my wives." Abu Abdur Rahman said, "Ishaq reported that Mahanu narrated this, but the correct narration is from Abdul Rahman bin Qais, the brother of Talik." Shu'bah reported it from Abdul Malik bin Maysarah, from Zaid bin Wahb, from Ali.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a suit of pure silk and I went out wearing it. But I saw anger on his face, so i tore it and divided it among my womenfolk. (Using translation from Aḥmad 755)
I heard ʿAli bin Abi Talib ؓ say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me, but I do not say that he forbade you, to wear gold rings, to wear garments made of a blend of linen and silk or garments dyed with safflower, and to recite Qurʿan whilst bowing. He gave me a suit of pure silk and I went out wearing it, and he said: ʿO ‘Ali, I did not give it to you to wear it.” So I went back to Fatimah ؓ and gave it to her to hold an edge of it, so she took hold of it to fold it with me, but I tore it in two. She said: May your hands be rubbed with dust, O son of Abu Talib! What have you done? I said to her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me to wear it. Wear it and give it to your womenfolk. (Using translation from Aḥmad 710)
[Machine] I went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the market, leaning against him. I saw a flowing garment being sold at the market, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you buy this and adorn yourself with it when Arab delegations come to you or when you address the people on Eid and other occasions." He said, "This is only worn by those who have no good character." So, I stayed for as long as Allah willed, then a flowing garment was given as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he sent it to me. I went out hastily when I heard about it and when he sent it to me, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you are sending me this garment, and yet I heard you say about it what you said?" He said, "Indeed, I only sent it to you for you to wear it or sell it and spend its price. I did not send it to you for you to adorn yourself with it." So, Umar sent it to the market.
