10. Sūrat Yūnus (2/3)

١٠۔ سُورَةُ يُونس ص ٢

Jonas (Meccan)

quran:10:51

Then is it that when it has ˹actually˺ occurred you will believe in it? Now? And you were ˹once˺ for it impatient  

Is it ˹only˺ then, when it has come to pass, ˹when˺ it has befallen you, that you will believe therein?, that is, in God, or ˹it means˺ in the chastisement, when it has come down (the ˹use of˺ hamza ˹in a-thumma, ‘is it then’˺ is to deny ˹the possibility of˺ deferrment ˹of chastisement˺, in other words, it ˹your belief˺ will not be accepted from you ˹in that instance˺ and it will be said to you: Now, do you believe, when ˹until now˺ you have been hastening it on?’, in mockery ˹of it˺.
القرآن:١٠:٥١

أَثُمَّ إِذَا مَا وَقَعَ آمَنْتُمْ بِهِ ۚ آلْآنَ وَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ بِهِ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ  

{أثُمَّ إذا ما وقع} حل بكم {آمنتم به} أي الله أو العذاب عند نزوله، والهمزة لإنكار التأخير فلا يقبل منكم ويقال لكم {آلآن} تؤمنون {وقد كنتم به تستعجلون} استهزاء.
quran:10:52

Then it will be said to those who had wronged, "Taste the punishment of eternity; are you being recompensed except for what you used to earn?"  

Then will it be said to those who were evildoers: ‘Taste the everlasting chastisement!, that is, the one in which you shall abide. Are you, you are not, requited for anything but, the requital of, what you used to earn?’
القرآن:١٠:٥٢

ثُمَّ قِيلَ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا ذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْخُلْدِ هَلْ تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْسِبُونَ  

{ثم قيل للذين ظلموا ذوقوا عذاب الخلد} أي الذي تخلدون فيه {هل} ما {تجزون إلا} جزاء {بما كنتم تكسبون}.
quran:10:53

And they ask information of you, ˹O Muhammad˺, "Is it true?" Say, "Yes, by my Lord. Indeed, it is truth; and you will not cause failure ˹to Allah˺."  

And they ask you to tell, to inform, them, ‘Is it true?’, that which you promise us in the way of chastisement and resurrection? Say: ‘Aye, indeed, by my Lord! Verily it is true and you cannot escape’, ˹you cannot˺ elude the chastisement.
القرآن:١٠:٥٣

وَيَسْتَنْبِئُونَكَ أَحَقٌّ هُوَ ۖ قُلْ إِي وَرَبِّي إِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ ۖ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ بِمُعْجِزِينَ  

{ويستنبئونك} يستخبرونك {أحق هو} أي ما وعدتنا به من العذاب والبعث {قل إي} نعم {وربي إنه لحق وما أنتم بمعجزين} بفائتين العذاب.
quran:10:54

And if each soul that wronged had everything on earth, it would offer it in ransom. And they will confide regret when they see the punishment; and they will be judged in justice, and they will not be wronged  

And if each soul that has done wrong, ˹that˺ has disbelieved, had all that is in the earth, of riches, it would offer it as ransom, against chastisement on the Day of Resurrection; and they will feel remorse within them, for having neglected faith, when they see the chastisement, their leaders keep it ˹their remorse˺ secret from the weak ones whom they had led astray, fearing reproach, but it has been decided justly between them, ˹between˺ all creatures, and they are not wronged, in anything.
القرآن:١٠:٥٤

وَلَوْ أَنَّ لِكُلِّ نَفْسٍ ظَلَمَتْ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ لَافْتَدَتْ بِهِ ۗ وَأَسَرُّوا النَّدَامَةَ لَمَّا رَأَوُا الْعَذَابَ ۖ وَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُمْ بِالْقِسْطِ ۚ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ  

{ولو أن لكل نفس ظلمت} كفرت {ما في الأرض} جميعا من الأموال {لافتدت به} من العذاب يوم القيامة {وأسرُّوا الندامة} على ترك الإيمان {لما رأوا العذاب} أخفاها رؤساؤهم عن الضعفاء الذين أضلوهم مخافة التعيير {وقضي بينهم} بين الخلائق {بالقسط} بالعدل {وهم لا يظلمون} شيئا.
quran:10:55

Unquestionably, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Unquestionably, the promise of Allah is truth, but most of them do not know  

Why, surely to God belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. Why, surely God’s promise, of resurrection and requital, is true, ˹is˺ fixed, but most of them, people, do not know, this.
القرآن:١٠:٥٥

أَلَا إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۗ أَلَا إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ  

{ألا إن لله ما في السماوات والأرض ألا إن وعد الله} بالبعث والجزاء {حق} ثابت {ولكن أكثرهم} أي الناس {لا يعلمون} ذلك.
quran:10:56

He gives life and causes death, and to Him you will be returned  

He gives life and makes to die, and to Him you shall be returned, in the Hereafter, and He shall requite you for your deeds.
القرآن:١٠:٥٦

هُوَ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ  

{هو يحيي ويميت وإليه ترجعون} في الآخرة فيجازيكم بأعمالكم.
quran:10:57

O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.  

O people, that is, inhabitants of Mecca, there has come to you an admonition from your Lord, a Book which contains ˹mention˺ of that which is ˹permissible˺ for you and that which is enjoined on you, and this ˹Book˺ is the Qur’ān; and a healing, a cure, for what is in the breasts, of corrupt beliefs and uncertainties, and a guidance, from error, and a mercy for those who believe, in it.
القرآن:١٠:٥٧

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُمْ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ  

{يا أيها الناس} أي أهل مكة {قد جاءتكم موعظة من ربكم} كتاب فيه ما لكم وما عليكم وهو القرآن {وشفاء} دواء {لما في الصدور} من العقائد الفاسدة والشكوك {وهدى} من الضلال {ورحمة للمؤمنين} به.
quran:10:58

Say, "In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy - in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate."  

Say: ‘In the bounty of God, ˹that is˺ Islam, and in His mercy, the Qur’ān, in that, bounty and mercy, let them rejoice: it is better than what they hoard’, in this world (read yajma‘ūn, ‘they hoard’, and tajma‘ūn, ‘you hoard’).
القرآن:١٠:٥٨

قُلْ بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَبِرَحْمَتِهِ فَبِذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَفْرَحُوا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ  

{قل بفضل الله} الإسلام {وبرحمته} القرآن {فبذلك} الفضل والرحمة {فليفرحوا هو خير مما يجمعون} من الدنيا بالياء والتاء.
quran:10:59

Say, "Have you seen what Allah has sent down to you of provision of which you have made ˹some˺ lawful and ˹some˺ unlawful?" Say, "Has Allah permitted you ˹to do so˺, or do you invent ˹something˺ about Allah?"  

Say: ‘Have you considered, inform me, what provision God has revealed, has created, for you, how you have made some of it unlawful and some lawful?’, as in the case of ˹the camels called˺ al-Bahīra or al-Sā’iba, and carrion. Say: ‘Has God given you permission, to make that lawful or unlawful? No! Or do you, nay ˹you˺, invent lies concerning God?’, by attributing that to Him.
القرآن:١٠:٥٩

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ مِنْ رِزْقٍ فَجَعَلْتُمْ مِنْهُ حَرَامًا وَحَلَالًا قُلْ آللَّهُ أَذِنَ لَكُمْ ۖ أَمْ عَلَى اللَّهِ تَفْتَرُونَ  

{قل أرأيتم} أخبروني {ما أنزل الله} خلق {لكم من رزق فجعلتم منه حراما وحلالا} كالبحيرة والسائبة والميتة {قل آلله أذن لكم} في ذلك بالتحليل والتحريم لا {أم} بل {على الله تفترون} تكذبون بنسبة ذلك إليه.
quran:10:60

And what will be the supposition of those who invent falsehood about Allah on the Day of Resurrection? Indeed, Allah is full of bounty to the people, but most of them are not grateful."  

And what do they suppose, those who invent lies concerning God, ˹will happen to them˺ on the Day of Resurrection?: do they reckon that He will not chastise them? No! Truly God is Bountiful to mankind, by granting them respite and bestowing graces upon them, but most of them do not give thanks.
القرآن:١٠:٦٠

وَمَا ظَنُّ الَّذِينَ يَفْتَرُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ الْكَذِبَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ  

{وما ظن الذين يفترون على الله الكذب} أي أيّ شيء ظنهم به {يوم القيامة} أيحسبون أنه لا يعاقبهم لا {إن الله لذو فضل على الناس} بإمهالهم والإنعام عليهم {ولكن أكثرهم لا يشكرون}.
quran:10:61

And, ˹O Muhammad˺, you are not ˹engaged˺ in any matter or recite any of the Qur'an and you ˹people˺ do not do any deed except that We are witness over you when you are involved in it. And not absent from your Lord is any ˹part˺ of an atom's weight within the earth or within the heaven or ˹anything˺ smaller than that or greater but that it is in a clear register.  

And you, O Muhammad (s), are not occupied with any business, any matter, nor do you recite anything regarding it, that is, regarding such a matter — ˹or it means: nor do you recite anything˺ from God, by way of the Qur’ān, which He has revealed to you, nor do you perform any action, God is addressing him and his community, but We are witnesses, watchers, over you when you are engaged therein, that is, ˹in˺ the action. And not so much as the weight of an atom, ˹the weight of˺ the smallest ant, in the earth or in the heaven escapes, is hidden from, your Lord, nor what is less than that or greater, but it is in a clear, a manifest, Book, namely, the Preserved Tablet (al-lawh al-mahfūz).
القرآن:١٠:٦١

وَمَا تَكُونُ فِي شَأْنٍ وَمَا تَتْلُو مِنْهُ مِنْ قُرْآنٍ وَلَا تَعْمَلُونَ مِنْ عَمَلٍ إِلَّا كُنَّا عَلَيْكُمْ شُهُودًا إِذْ تُفِيضُونَ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَا يَعْزُبُ عَنْ رَبِّكَ مِنْ مِثْقَالِ ذَرَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَلَا أَصْغَرَ مِنْ ذَٰلِكَ وَلَا أَكْبَرَ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ  

{وما تكون} يا محمد {في شأن} أمر {وما تتلو منه} أي من الشأن أو الله {من قرآن} أنزله عليك {ولا تعملون} خاطبهُ وأمته {من عمل إلا كنا عليكم شهودا} رقباء {إذ تُفيضون} تأخذون {فيه} أي العمل {وما يَعْزُبُ} يغيب {عن ربك من مثقال} وزن {ذرة} أصغر نملة {في الأرض ولا في السماء ولا أصغر من ذلك ولا أكبر إلا في كتاب مبين} بيِّن هو اللوح المحفوظ.
quran:10:62

Unquestionably, ˹for˺ the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve  

Assuredly God’s friends, no fear shall befall them, neither shall they grieve, in the Hereafter.
القرآن:١٠:٦٢

أَلَا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ  

{ألا إن أولياء الله لا خوف عليهم ولا هم يحزنون} في الآخرة.
quran:10:63

Those who believed and were fearing Allah  

They are, those who believe and fear, God, by observing His commandments and prohibitions.
القرآن:١٠:٦٣

الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ  

هم {الذين آمنوا وكانوا يتقون} الله بامتثال أمره ونهيه.
quran:10:64

For them are good tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter. No change is there in the words of Allah. That is what is the great attainment.  

Theirs are good tidings in the life of this world: in a hadīth verified by al-Hākim this has been explained as ˹referring to˺ a propitious vision which an individual might have or ˹a vision˺ which another might have of that person; and in the Hereafter: Paradise and reward. There is no changing the Words of God, no failing of His promises; that, mentioned, is the supreme triumph.
القرآن:١٠:٦٤

لَهُمُ الْبُشْرَىٰ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ ۚ لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ  

{لهم البشرى في الحياة الدنيا} فسرت في حديث صححه الحاكم بالرؤيا الصالحة يراها الرجل أو تُرى له {وفي الآخرة} الجنة والثواب {لا تبديل لكلمات الله} لا خلف لمواعيده {ذلك} المذكور {هو الفوز العظيم}.
quran:10:65

And let not their speech grieve you. Indeed, honor ˹due to power˺ belongs to Allah entirely. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.  

And let not what they say, to you, that you have not been sent ˹as a prophet˺ or otherwise, grieve you. Truly (inna: indicates a new sentence) power, might, belongs wholly to God. He is the Hearer, of speech, the Knower, of deeds, and will requite them and grant you victory.
القرآن:١٠:٦٥

وَلَا يَحْزُنْكَ قَوْلُهُمْ ۘ إِنَّ الْعِزَّةَ لِلَّهِ جَمِيعًا ۚ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ  

{ولا يحزنك قولهم} لك لست مرسلا وغيره {إن} استئناف {العزة} القوة {لله جميعا هو السميع} للقول {العليم} بالفعل فيجازيهم وينصرك.
quran:10:66

Unquestionably, to Allah belongs whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth. And those who invoke other than Allah do not ˹actually˺ follow ˹His˺ "partners." They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying  

Why, surely to God belongs all who are in the heavens and all who are in the earth, as servants, possessions and creatures. Those who call upon, ˹those who˺ worship, besides God, that is, other than Him, idols, are not following associates, of His, in reality, exalted be He above this: they are following nothing but conjecture, in this ˹matter˺, that is, their supposition that these are gods who intercede for them, and they are only telling lies, in this ˹matter˺.
القرآن:١٠:٦٦

أَلَا إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ ۗ وَمَا يَتَّبِعُ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ شُرَكَاءَ ۚ إِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ  

{ألا إن لله من في السماوات ومن في الأرض} عبيدا وملكا وخلقا {وما يتبع الذين يدعون} يعبدون {من دون الله} أي غيره أصناما {شركاء} له على الحقيقة تعالى عن ذلك {إن} ما {يتبعون} في ذلك {إلا الظن} أي ظنهم أنها آلهة تشفع لهم {وإن} ما {هم إلا يخرصون} يكذبون في ذلك.
quran:10:67

It is He who made for you the night to rest therein and the day, giving sight. Indeed in that are signs for a people who listen.  

He it is Who made for you the night that you should rest therein, and the day to see: the attribution of sight (ibsār) to ‘the day’ is figurative, since one is able to see during it. Surely in that are signs, indications of His Oneness, exalted be He, for a folk who are able to hear, hearing ˹in such a way so as˺ to reflect and be admonished.
القرآن:١٠:٦٧

هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ اللَّيْلَ لِتَسْكُنُوا فِيهِ وَالنَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَسْمَعُونَ  

{هو الذي جعل لكم الليل لتسكنوا فيه والنهار مبصرا} إسناد الإبصار إليه مجاز لأنه يبصر فيه {إن في ذلك لآيات} دلالات على وحدانيته تعالى {لقوم يسمعون} سماع تدبر واتعاظ.
quran:10:68

They have said, "Allah has taken a son." Exalted is He; He is the ˹one˺ Free of need. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. You have no authority for this ˹claim˺. Do you say about Allah that which you do not know?  

They, that is, the Jews and the Christians, and those who claim that the angels are the daughters of God, say, ‘God has taken ˹to Him˺ a son’. God, exalted be He, says to them: Glory be to Him!, ˹in affirmation of˺ His transcending having offspring. He is Independent, ˹without need˺ of anyone, for only he who has need of a child would desire ˹to have˺ one. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, as possessions, creatures and servants. You have no warrant, ˹no˺ proof, for this, that you say. Do you say about God what you do not know? (an interrogative meant as a rebuke).
القرآن:١٠:٦٨

قَالُوا اتَّخَذَ اللَّهُ وَلَدًا ۗ سُبْحَانَهُ ۖ هُوَ الْغَنِيُّ ۖ لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۚ إِنْ عِنْدَكُمْ مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ بِهَٰذَا ۚ أَتَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ  

{قالوا} أي اليهود والنصارى ومن زعم أن الملائكة بنات الله {اتخذ الله ولدا} قال تعالى لهم {سبحانه} تنزيها له عن الولد {هو الغني} عن كل أحد وإنما يطلب الولد من يحتاج إليه {له ما في السماوات وما في الأرض} ملكا وخلقا وعبيدا {إن} ما {عندكم من سلطان} حجة {بهذا} الذي تقولونه {أتقولون على الله ما لا تعلمون} استفهام توبيخ.
quran:10:69

Say, "Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allah will not succeed."  

Say: ‘Truly those who invent lies concerning God, by attributing offspring to Him, shall not prosper’, they shall not find happiness.
القرآن:١٠:٦٩

قُلْ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْتَرُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ الْكَذِبَ لَا يُفْلِحُونَ  

{قل إن الذين يفترون على الله الكذب} بنسبه الولد إليه {لا يفلحون} لا يسعدون.
quran:10:70

˹For them is brief˺ enjoyment in this world; then to Us is their return; then We will make them taste the severe punishment because they used to disbelieve  

Theirs will be, enjoyment, ˹only˺ a little, in this world, which they will enjoy for the duration of their lives, then to Us is their return, at death, then We shall make them taste terrible chastisement, after death, because they used to disbelieve.
القرآن:١٠:٧٠

مَتَاعٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا ثُمَّ إِلَيْنَا مَرْجِعُهُمْ ثُمَّ نُذِيقُهُمُ الْعَذَابَ الشَّدِيدَ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْفُرُونَ  

لهم {متاع} قليل {في الدنيا} يتمتعون به مدة حياتهم {ثم إلينا مرجعهم} بالموت {ثم نذيقهم العذاب الشديد} بعد الموت {بما كانوا يكفرون}.
quran:10:71

And recite to them the news of Noah, when he said to his people, "O my people, if my residence and my reminding of the signs of Allah has become burdensome upon you - then I have relied upon Allah. So resolve upon your plan and ˹call upon˺ your associates. Then let not your plan be obscure to you. Then carry it out upon me and do not give me respite.  

And recite, O Muhammad (s), to them, that is, ˹to˺ the Meccan disbelievers, the story, the tale, of Noah (Nūhin is substituted by ˹the following, idh qāla˺) when he said to his people, ‘O my people, if my sojourn, my stay among you, is too great ˹to bear˺, is a hardship, for you, as is my reminding you, my admonishing you, by the signs of God, in God have I put my trust; so decide upon your course of action, resolve upon what you will do to me, together with your associates (wa-shurakā’akum: the wāw ˹wa-˺ means here ‘with’), then let not your decision be a secret between you, concealed, nay, manifest it and proclaim it to me; then implement it against me, carry out what you desire, and do not put it off, ˹do not˺ give me respite, for I am not concerned by you.
القرآن:١٠:٧١

وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ نُوحٍ إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِ يَا قَوْمِ إِنْ كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَيْكُمْ مَقَامِي وَتَذْكِيرِي بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ فَعَلَى اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ فَأَجْمِعُوا أَمْرَكُمْ وَشُرَكَاءَكُمْ ثُمَّ لَا يَكُنْ أَمْرُكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ غُمَّةً ثُمَّ اقْضُوا إِلَيَّ وَلَا تُنْظِرُونِ  

{واتل} يا محمد {عليهم} أي كفار مكة {نبأ} خبر {نوح} ويبدل منه {إذ قال لقومه يا قوم إن كان كُبر} شق {عليكم مقامي} لبثي فيكم {وتذكيري} وعظي إياكم {بآيات الله فعلى الله توكلت فأجمعوا أمركم} اعزموا على أمر تفعلونه بي {وشركاءكم} الواو بمعني مع {ثم لا يكن أمركم عليكم غُمة} مستورا بل أظهروه وجاهروني به {ثم اقضوا إليَّ} امضوا فيما أردتموه {ولا تنظرون} تمهلون فإني لست مباليا بكم.
quran:10:72

And if you turn away ˹from my advice˺ then no payment have I asked of you. My reward is only from Allah, and I have been commanded to be of the Muslims."  

But if you turn away, from my reminding ˹you˺, I have not asked you for any wage, any reward for it, so turn ˹and go˺ away: my wage, my reward, falls only on God, and I have been commanded to be of those who submit ˹to God˺’.
القرآن:١٠:٧٢

فَإِنْ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَمَا سَأَلْتُكُمْ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَى اللَّهِ ۖ وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ  

{فإن تولَّيتم} عن تذكيري {فما سألتكم من أجر} ثواب عليه فتولوا {إن} ما {أجري} ثوابي {إلا على الله وأمرت أن أكون من المسلمين}.
quran:10:73

And they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship and made them successors, and We drowned those who denied Our signs. Then see how was the end of those who were warned.  

But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the Ark, and made them, that is, those with him, successors, in the earth, and We drowned those who denied Our signs, by ˹unleashing˺ the Flood. Behold then the nature of the consequence for those who had been warned!, in that they were destroyed: likewise We deal with those who deny.
القرآن:١٠:٧٣

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ فِي الْفُلْكِ وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ خَلَائِفَ وَأَغْرَقْنَا الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا ۖ فَانْظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُنْذَرِينَ  

{فكذبوه فنجيناه ومن معه في الفلك} السفينة {وجعلناهم} أي من معه {خلائف} في الأرض {وأغرقنا الذين كذبوا بآياتنا} بالطوفان {فانظر كيف كان عاقبة المنذرين} من إهلاكهم فكذلك نفعل بمن كذب.
quran:10:74

Then We sent after him messengers to their peoples, and they came to them with clear proofs. But they were not to believe in that which they had denied before. Thus We seal over the hearts of the transgressors  

Then, after him, that is, ˹after˺ Noah, We sent messengers to their people, such as Abraham, Hūd and Sālih, and they brought them clear proofs, miracles, but it was not for them to believe in that which they had denied before, that is, before the sending of messengers to them. Thus do We seal, stamp ˹upon˺, the hearts of the transgressors — so that they cannot accept faith — in the same way that We sealed the hearts of those ˹before˺.
القرآن:١٠:٧٤

ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ رُسُلًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِمْ فَجَاءُوهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَمَا كَانُوا لِيُؤْمِنُوا بِمَا كَذَّبُوا بِهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَطْبَعُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ الْمُعْتَدِينَ  

{ثم بعثنا من بعده} أي نوح {رسلا إلى قومهم} كإبراهيم وهود وصالح {فجاءُوهم بالبينات} المعجزات {فما كانوا ليؤمنوا بما كذبوا به من قبل} أي بعث الرسل إليهم {كذلك نطبع} نختم {على قلوب المعتدين} فلا تقبل الإيمان كما طبعنا على قلوب أولئك.
quran:10:75

Then We sent after them Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his establishment with Our signs, but they behaved arrogantly and were a criminal people  

Then, after them, We sent Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his council, that is, his folk, with Our, nine, signs, but they were disdainful, to believe in them, and were a sinful folk.
القرآن:١٠:٧٥

ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ مُوسَىٰ وَهَارُونَ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَئِهِ بِآيَاتِنَا فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا مُجْرِمِينَ  

{ثم بعثنا من بعدهم موسى وهارون إلى فرعون وملئه} قومه {بآياتنا} التسع {فاستكبروا} عن الإيمان بها {وكانوا قوما مجرمين}.
quran:10:76

So when there came to them the truth from Us, they said, "Indeed, this is obvious magic."  

So, when the Truth came to them from Us, they said, ‘Surely this is manifest sorcery’, ˹sorcery that is˺ clear and evident.
القرآن:١٠:٧٦

فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ عِنْدِنَا قَالُوا إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَسِحْرٌ مُبِينٌ  

{فلما جاءهم الحق من عندنا قالوا إنَّ هذا لسحر مبين} بيّنّ ظاهر.
quran:10:77

Moses said, "Do you say ˹thus˺ about the truth when it has come to you? Is this magic? But magicians will not succeed."  

Moses said, ‘Do you say ˹so˺ of the Truth when it has come to you, that it is sorcery? Is this sorcery?, when the one who has brought it has indeed prospered and has invalidated the sorcery of the sorcerers? Now sorcerers do not prosper’ (the interrogative in both instances is meant as a disavowal).
القرآن:١٠:٧٧

قَالَ مُوسَىٰ أَتَقُولُونَ لِلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاءَكُمْ ۖ أَسِحْرٌ هَٰذَا وَلَا يُفْلِحُ السَّاحِرُونَ  

{قال موسى أتقولون للحق لما جاءكم} إنه لسحر {أسحر هذا} وقد أفلح من أتى به وأبطل سحر السحرة {ولا يفلح الساحرون} والاستفهام في الموضعين للإنكار.
quran:10:78

They said, "Have you come to us to turn us away from that upon which we found our fathers and so that you two may have grandeur in the land? And we are not believers in you."  

They said, ‘Have you come to us to divert us, to turn us away, from what we found our fathers following, and that yours both might be the greatness, the kingship, in the land, the land of Egypt? We will not believe you two’.
القرآن:١٠:٧٨

قَالُوا أَجِئْتَنَا لِتَلْفِتَنَا عَمَّا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ آبَاءَنَا وَتَكُونَ لَكُمَا الْكِبْرِيَاءُ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَمَا نَحْنُ لَكُمَا بِمُؤْمِنِينَ  

{قالوا أجئتنا لتَلفِتَنا} لتردنا {عما وجدنا عليه آباءنا وتكون لكما الكبرياء} الملك {في الأرض} أرض مصر {وما نحن لكما بمؤمنين} مصدقين.
quran:10:79

And Pharaoh said, "Bring to me every learned magician."  

And Pharaoh said, ‘Bring me every cunning sorcerer’, ˹every˺ individual excelling in the art of sorcery.
القرآن:١٠:٧٩

وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ ائْتُونِي بِكُلِّ سَاحِرٍ عَلِيمٍ  

{وقال فرعون ائتوني بكل ساحر عليم} فائق في علم السحر.
quran:10:80

So when the magicians came, Moses said to them, "Throw down whatever you will throw."  

And when the sorcerers came, Moses said to them, after they had said to him, Either you cast, or we shall be the casters! ˹Q. 7:115˺: ‘Cast your cast!’
القرآن:١٠:٨٠

فَلَمَّا جَاءَ السَّحَرَةُ قَالَ لَهُمْ مُوسَىٰ أَلْقُوا مَا أَنْتُمْ مُلْقُونَ  

(فلما جاء السحرة قال لهم موسى) بعد ما قالوا له "" إما أن تلقي وإما أن نكون نحن الملقين "": (ألقوا ما أنتم ملقون).
quran:10:81

And when they had thrown, Moses said, "What you have brought is ˹only˺ magic. Indeed, Allah will expose its worthlessness. Indeed, Allah does not amend the work of corrupters.  

Then, when they had cast, their ropes and staffs, Moses said, ‘What (mā is interrogative and the subject, its predicate being ˹the following, ji’tum bihi˺) have you brought? Sorcery? (ā’l-sihru ˹a-al-sihru˺ is a substitute ˹for the predicate ji’tum bihi, ‘have you brought’˺; a variant reading has al-sihru with a single hamza, making it predicative, in which case mā is the relative particle of the subject) Verily God will bring it to nothing, He will efface it. Truly God does not make right the work of those who do corruption.
القرآن:١٠:٨١

فَلَمَّا أَلْقَوْا قَالَ مُوسَىٰ مَا جِئْتُمْ بِهِ السِّحْرُ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَيُبْطِلُهُ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُصْلِحُ عَمَلَ الْمُفْسِدِينَ  

{فلما ألقوا} حبالهم وعصيهم {قال موسى ما} استفهامية مبتدأ خبره {جئتم به السحر} بدل وفي قراءة بهمزة واحدة إخبار فما اسم موصول مبتدأ {إن الله سيبطله} أي سيمحقه {إن الله لا يصلح عمل المفسدين}.
quran:10:82

And Allah will establish the truth by His words, even if the criminals dislike it."  

And God will vindicate, He will establish and make prevail, the Truth by His words, by His promises, however much the sinners be averse’.
القرآن:١٠:٨٢

وَيُحِقُّ اللَّهُ الْحَقَّ بِكَلِمَاتِهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُجْرِمُونَ  

{ويحق} يثبت ويظهر {الله الحق بكلماته} بمواعيده {ولو كره المجرمون}.
quran:10:83

But no one believed Moses, except ˹some˺ youths among his people, for fear of Pharaoh and his establishment that they would persecute them. And indeed, Pharaoh was haughty within the land, and indeed, he was of the transgressors  

But with Moses, none believed save a few descendants, a party, of, the children of, his, that is, Pharaoh’s, folk, out of fear of Pharaoh and their council, that he ˹Pharaoh˺ might persecute them, turn them away from his ˹Moses’s˺ religion by torturing them; and truly Pharaoh was despotic, arrogant, in the land, the land of Egypt, and truly he was of the prodigal, ˹of˺ those who transgress the bounds by claiming to be Lords.
القرآن:١٠:٨٣

فَمَا آمَنَ لِمُوسَىٰ إِلَّا ذُرِّيَّةٌ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ عَلَىٰ خَوْفٍ مِنْ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَئِهِمْ أَنْ يَفْتِنَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّ فِرْعَوْنَ لَعَالٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَإِنَّهُ لَمِنَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ  

{فما آمن لموسى إلا ذرية} طائفة {من} أولاد {قومه} أي فرعون {على خوف من فرعون وملئهم أن يفتنهم} يصرفهم عن دينه بتعذيبه {وإن فرعون لعال} متكبر {في الأرض} أرض مصر {وإنه لمن المسرفين} المتجاوزين الحد بادعاء الربوبية.
quran:10:84

And Moses said, "O my people, if you have believed in Allah, then rely upon Him, if you should be Muslims."  

And Moses said, ‘O my people, if you have believed in God then put your trust in Him, if you have ˹truly˺ submitted ˹to Him˺’.
القرآن:١٠:٨٤

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ يَا قَوْمِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ آمَنْتُمْ بِاللَّهِ فَعَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلُوا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُسْلِمِينَ  

{وقال موسى يا قوم إن كنتم آمنتم بالله فعليه توكلوا إن كنتم مسلمين}.
quran:10:85

So they said, "Upon Allah do we rely. Our Lord, make us not ˹objects of˺ trial for the wrongdoing people  

So they said, ‘In God we have put our trust. Our Lord, make us not a ˹cause of˺ temptation for the evildoing folk, that is, do not make them prevail over us, lest they then think that they are upon the right path and so end up succumbing to ˹the˺ temptation ˹of thinking that they are upon the right path˺ because of us;
القرآن:١٠:٨٥

فَقَالُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ  

{فقالوا على الله توكلنا ربنا لا تجعلنا فتنة للقوم الظالمين} أي لا تظهرهم علينا فيظنوا أنهم على الحق فيفتتنوا بنا.
quran:10:86

And save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people."  

and deliver us by Your mercy from the unbelieving folk’.
القرآن:١٠:٨٦

وَنَجِّنَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ  

{ونجّنا برحمتك من القوم الكافرين}.
quran:10:87

And We inspired to Moses and his brother, "Settle your people in Egypt in houses and make your houses ˹facing the˺ qiblah and establish prayer and give good tidings to the believers."  

And We inspired Moses and his brother ˹saying˺: ‘Appoint houses for your people in Egypt and make your houses oratories, places in which to perform prayers, so that you might be secure from fear — for Pharaoh had prohibited them from performing prayers — and establish, fulfil, worship; and give good tidings to the believers’, of victory and Paradise.
القرآن:١٠:٨٧

وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَأَخِيهِ أَنْ تَبَوَّآ لِقَوْمِكُمَا بِمِصْرَ بُيُوتًا وَاجْعَلُوا بُيُوتَكُمْ قِبْلَةً وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ  

{وأوحينا إلى موسى وأخيه أن تبوّأا} اتخذا {لقومكما بمصر بيوتا واجعلوا بيوتكم قبلة} مصلًّى تصلون فيه لتأمنوا من الخوف وكان فرعون منعهم من الصلاة {وأقيموا الصلاة} أتموها {وبشّر المؤمنين} بالنصر والجنة.
quran:10:88

And Moses said, "Our Lord, indeed You have given Pharaoh and his establishment splendor and wealth in the worldly life, our Lord, that they may lead ˹men˺ astray from Your way. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment."  

And Moses said, ‘Our Lord, You have indeed given Pharaoh and his council splendour and riches in the life of this world. Our Lord, You have given them this, that they may lead ˹people˺ astray, as a consequence thereof, from Your way, ˹from˺ Your religion. Our Lord, obliterate, transform, their riches and harden their hearts, stamp upon them and shackle ˹them˺, so that they do not believe until they see the painful chastisement’: he ˹Moses˺ invoked God against them and Aaron said ‘Amen’ at the end of his invocation.
القرآن:١٠:٨٨

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ آتَيْتَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَأَهُ زِينَةً وَأَمْوَالًا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا رَبَّنَا لِيُضِلُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِكَ ۖ رَبَّنَا اطْمِسْ عَلَىٰ أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاشْدُدْ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ  

{وقال موسى ربنا إنك آتيت فرعون وملأهُ زينة وأموالا في الحياة الدنيا ربنا} آتيتهم ذلك {ليضلوا} في {عن سبيلك} دينك {ربنا اطمس على أموالهم} امسخها {واشدد على قلوبهم} اطبع عليها واستوثق {فلا يؤمنوا حتى يروا العذاب الأليم} المؤلم دعا عليهم وأمَّنَ هارون على دعائه.
quran:10:89

˹Allah˺ said, "Your supplication has been answered." So remain on a right course and follow not the way of those who do not know."  

He, ˹God˺ exalted be He, said, ‘Your prayer has been answered: thus their riches were transformed into stones and Pharaoh did not believe until he was about to drown. So the two of you remain upright, with the Message and the Call until such time as chastisement befalls them, and do not follow the way of those who have no knowledge’, when they seek to hasten on My judgement — it is reported that he ˹Moses˺ remained ˹alive˺ a further forty years thereafter.
القرآن:١٠:٨٩

قَالَ قَدْ أُجِيبَتْ دَعْوَتُكُمَا فَاسْتَقِيمَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعَانِّ سَبِيلَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ  

{قال} تعالى {قد أجيبت دعوتكما} فمسخت أموالهم حجارة ولم يؤمن فرعون حتى أدركه الغرق {فاستقيما} على الرسالة والدعوة إلى أن يأتيهم العذاب {ولا تتبعان سبيل الذين لا يعلمون} في استعجال قضائي روي أنه مكث بعدها أربعين سنة.
quran:10:90

And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, "I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims."  

And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea; and Pharaoh pursued them, he caught up with them, together with his hosts, in insolence and transgression (baghyan wa-‘adwan: these constitute the ˹direct˺ object denoting reason), until, when the ˹fate of˺ drowning overtook him, he said, ‘I believe that (annahu is ˹to be understood as˺ bi-annahu; a variant reading has innahu, ‘truly it is …’ indicating a new sentence) there is no god save Him in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of those who submit ˹to Him˺’: he reiterated this ˹his submission to God˺ so that it might be accepted from him, but it was not; and Gabriel thrust mud from the sea into his mouth, lest ˹God’s˺ mercy embrace him. And he ˹Gabriel˺ said to him:
القرآن:١٠:٩٠

وَجَاوَزْنَا بِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ الْبَحْرَ فَأَتْبَعَهُمْ فِرْعَوْنُ وَجُنُودُهُ بَغْيًا وَعَدْوًا ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَدْرَكَهُ الْغَرَقُ قَالَ آمَنْتُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا الَّذِي آمَنَتْ بِهِ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ وَأَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ  

{وجاوزنا ببني إسرائيل البحر فأتْبَعَهُمْ} لحقهم {فرعون وجنود بغيا وعدوا} مفعول له {حتى إذا أدركه الغرق قال آمنت أنه} أي بأنه وفي قراءة بالكسر استئنافا {لا إله الذي آمنت به بنو إسرائيل وأنا من المسلمين} كرره ليقبل منه فلم يقبل، ودس جبريل في فيه من حمأة البحر مخافة أن تناله الرحمة، وقال له.
quran:10:91

Now? And you had disobeyed ˹Him˺ before and were of the corrupters?  

‘Now, do you believe, when hitherto you have disobeyed and been of those who do corruption?, on account of your being astray and your leading ˹others˺ astray, away from belief.
القرآن:١٠:٩١

آلْآنَ وَقَدْ عَصَيْتَ قَبْلُ وَكُنْتَ مِنَ الْمُفْسِدِينَ  

{آلآن} تؤمن {وقد عصيت قبل وكنت من المفسدين} وإضلالك عن الإيمان.
quran:10:92

So today We will save you in body that you may be to those who succeed you a sign. And indeed, many among the people, of Our signs, are heedless  

But this day We shall save you, We shall bring you out of the sea, in your body, your lifeless corpse, that you may be, for those after you a sign, a lesson, that they might come to know your servitude and not venture upon deeds like yours. According to Ibn ‘Abbās, some of the Children of Israel doubted his death and so he was brought out ˹of the sea˺ for them to see. And truly most people, that is, the people of Mecca, are heedless of Our signs’, not learning the lesson therefrom.
القرآن:١٠:٩٢

فَالْيَوْمَ نُنَجِّيكَ بِبَدَنِكَ لِتَكُونَ لِمَنْ خَلْفَكَ آيَةً ۚ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنَ النَّاسِ عَنْ آيَاتِنَا لَغَافِلُونَ  

{فاليوم ننجيك} نخرجك من البحر {ببدنك} جسدك الذي لا روح فيه {لتكون لمن خلفك} بعدك {آية} عبرة فيعرفوا عبوديتك ولا يقدموا على مثل فعلك وعن ابن عباس أن بعض بني إسرائيل شكوا في موته فأخرج لهم ليروه {وإن كثيرا من الناس} أي أهل مكة {عن آياتنا لغافلون} لا يعتبرون بها.
quran:10:93

And We had certainty settled the Children of Israel in an agreeable settlement and provided them with good things. And they did not differ until ˹after˺ knowledge had come to them. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ  

And verily We appointed for the Children of Israel an excellent abode, a noble ˹place of˺ residence, namely, Syria and Egypt, and We provided them with good things; and they did not differ, such that some believed while others disbelieved, until the knowledge came to them. Truly your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ.
القرآن:١٠:٩٣

وَلَقَدْ بَوَّأْنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُبَوَّأَ صِدْقٍ وَرَزَقْنَاهُمْ مِنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ فَمَا اخْتَلَفُوا حَتَّىٰ جَاءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَقْضِي بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ  

{ولقد بوأنا} أنزلنا {بني إسرائيل مُبَوّأ صدق} منزل كرامة وهو الشام ومصر {ورزقناهم من الطيبات فما اختلفوا} بأن آمن بعض وكفر بعض {حتى جاءهم العلم إن ربَّك يقضي بينهم يوم القيامة فيما كانوا فيه يختلفون} من أمر الدين بإنجاء المؤمنين وتعذيب الكافرين.
quran:10:94

So if you are in doubt, ˹O Muhammad˺, about that which We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Scripture before you. The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord, so never be among the doubters.  

So, if you, O Muhammad (s), are in doubt concerning what We have revealed to you, of stories — hypothetically speaking — then question those who read the Scripture, the Torah, before you, for it is confirmed ˹therein˺ with them and they can inform you of its truth. The Prophet (s) said, ‘I have no doubt, nor will I question’. Verily the Truth from your Lord has come to you; so do not be of the waverers, ˹of˺ those who have doubts about it.
القرآن:١٠:٩٤

فَإِنْ كُنْتَ فِي شَكٍّ مِمَّا أَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ فَاسْأَلِ الَّذِينَ يَقْرَءُونَ الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ ۚ لَقَدْ جَاءَكَ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكَ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمُمْتَرِينَ  

(فإن كنت) يا محمد (في شك مما أنزلنا إليك) من القصص فرضاً (فاسأل الذين يقرءون الكتاب) التوراة (من قبلك) فإنه ثابت عندهم يخبروك بصدقه قال ﷺ : "" لا أشك ولا أسأل "" (لقد جاءك الحق من ربك فلا تكونن من الممترين) الشاكين فيه.
quran:10:95

And never be of those who deny the signs of Allah and ˹thus˺ be among the losers.  

And do not be of those who deny God’s signs and so be of the losers.
القرآن:١٠:٩٥

وَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ  

{ولا تكونن من الذين كذبوا بآيات الله فتكون من الخاسرين}.
quran:10:96

Indeed, those upon whom the word of your Lord has come into effect will not believe,  

Truly those against whom your Lord’s Word, of chastisement, is justified, ˹against whom˺ it is due, will not believe,
القرآن:١٠:٩٦

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ حَقَّتْ عَلَيْهِمْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ  

{إن الذين حَقَّت} وجبت {عليهم كلمة ربك} بالعذاب {لا يؤمنون}.
quran:10:97

Even if every sign should come to them, until they see the painful punishment.  

though every sign come to them, until they see the painful chastisement, at which time it ˹their belief˺ will be of no use to them.
القرآن:١٠:٩٧

وَلَوْ جَاءَتْهُمْ كُلُّ آيَةٍ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ  

{ولو جاءتهم كل آية حتى يروا العذاب الأليم} فلا ينفعهم حينئذ.
quran:10:98

Then has there not been a ˹single˺ city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.  

If only there had been one town — meaning its inhabitants — that believed, before chastisement befell it, and profited by its belief — except for the people of Jonah: when they believed, after seeing a portent of the chastisement, for they did not wait ˹to believe˺ until it came to pass, We removed from upon them the chastisement of degradation in the life of this world and We gave them comfort for a while, until the conclusion of their terms ˹of life˺.
القرآن:١٠:٩٨

فَلَوْلَا كَانَتْ قَرْيَةٌ آمَنَتْ فَنَفَعَهَا إِيمَانُهَا إِلَّا قَوْمَ يُونُسَ لَمَّا آمَنُوا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمْ عَذَابَ الْخِزْيِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَمَتَّعْنَاهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ  

{فلولا} فهلا {كانت قرية} أريد أهلها {آمنت} قبل نزول العذاب بها {فنفعها إيمانها إلا} لكن {قوم يونس لما آمنوا} عند رؤية أمارة العذاب ولم يؤخروا إلى حلوله {كشفنا عنهم عذاب الخزي في الحياة الدنيا ومتعناهم إلى حين} انقضاء آجالهم.
quran:10:99

And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then, ˹O Muhammad˺, would you compel the people in order that they become believers?  

And if your Lord willed, all who are in the earth would have believed together. Would you then compel people, to do what God did not will that they do, until they are believers? No!
القرآن:١٠:٩٩

وَلَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّكَ لَآمَنَ مَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ كُلُّهُمْ جَمِيعًا ۚ أَفَأَنْتَ تُكْرِهُ النَّاسَ حَتَّىٰ يَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ  

{ولو شاء ربك لآمن من في الأرض كلهم جميعا أفأنت تُكره الناس} بما لم يشأه الله منهم {حتى يكونوا مؤمنين} لا.
quran:10:100

And it is not for a soul to believe except by permission of Allah, and He will place defilement upon those who will not use reason.  

And it is not for any soul to believe save by the permission of God, by His will, and He causes abomination, chastisement, to fall upon those who have no understanding, ˹those who do not˺ reflect upon God’s signs.
القرآن:١٠:١٠٠

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفْسٍ أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَيَجْعَلُ الرِّجْسَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ  

{وما كان لنفس أن تؤمن إلا بإذن الله} بإرادته {ويجعل الرجس} العذاب {على الذين لا يعقلون} يتدبرون آيات الله.
