40. Chapter (5/7)
[Machine] He entered upon her while she was covered with a quilt that had a picture of statues on it. He then colored his face and leaned towards the quilt, tearing it with his hand. Then he said, "Indeed, the most severe punishment on the Day of Resurrection is for those who resemble the creation of Allah." Qatada said, "And Abu Hamid informed us, Muhammad bin Yahya narrated to us from Abu Al-Mughirah, from Al-Awza'i, from Az-Zuhri, from Al-Qasim bin Muhammad, from Aisha. She said, "And Muhammad bin Yahya narrated to us, Ya'qub bin Ibrahim bin Sa'd narrated to us from his father, from Ibn Shihab, from Al-Qasim bin Muhammad, from Aisha. They mentioned something similar, but did not mention him tearing it with his hand or the presence of statues."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from a journey and I hung my curtain on my door, which had horses with wings on it. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw it, he said, "Remove it, for it is from the authentic narration of Hisham."
Safinah AbuAbdurRahman said that a man prepared food for Ali ibn AbuTalib who was his guest, and Fatimah said: I wish we had invited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he had eaten with us. They invited him, and when he came he put his hands on the side-ports of the door, but when he saw the figured curtain which had been put at the end of the house, he went away. So Fatimah said to Ali: Follow him and see what turned him back. I (Ali) followed him and asked: What turned you back, Messenger of Allah? He replied: It is not fitting for me or for any Prophet to enter a house which is decorated. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3755)
[Machine] "Allah's messenger ﷺ said that it is not appropriate for a prophet to enter a luxuriously decorated house, as he said about Umm Salamah."
The Prophet ﷺ ordered Umar ibn al-Khattab who was in al-Batha' at the time of the conquest (of Makkah) to visit the Ka'bah and obliterate all images in it. The Prophet ﷺ did not enter it until all the images were obliterated. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4156)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Angels do not enter a house that has a dog or statues that are not mentioned in the narration of Ibn Wahb."
[Machine] "To come to me and honor me, you and your companions, while he is a man among the greats of the Levant. Umar said to him, 'We do not enter your churches because of the images in them, meaning the statues.'"
[Machine] He entered until he broke the image, then he entered.
40.38 [Machine] Restrictions on photography
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Verily, those who make these images will be punished on the Day of Judgment. It will be said to them: 'Bring to life what you have created.'"
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "Verily, the most severe punishment among people in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be for the image-makers."
[Machine] I entered with Abu Huraira to the house of Marwan and saw pictures in it. He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever creates any form of creation like My creation, let them create a spec or a grain or a barley corn.'"
[Machine] Ibn Abbas, while giving people fatwas, did not attribute any of his fatwas to the Prophet ﷺ . A man came to him and said, "I am from the people of Iraq, and I make these drawings." Ibn Abbas said to him, "Come closer, come closer, two or three times." Then he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever makes a picture in this world will be commanded on the Day of Resurrection to breathe life into it, and he will not be able to do so.'"
[Machine] "Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ that he cursed the one who takes pictures."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , would not keep in his house any garment with patches on it without tearing it apart.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever makes a picture (of a living being), he will be punished and will be commanded to breathe life into it, but he will not be able to breathe life into it. And whoever tells a false dream, he will be punished and will be commanded to tie between two hairs, but he will not be able to do so. And whoever listens to the conversation of a people who dislike him, molten lead will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection." Sufyan said, "Nowadays, molten lead is what bullets are made of."
40.39 [Machine] License of what is stepped on or has its heads cut off and in images without souls from trees and others
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has returned from a journey and I had covered the idols I had in sahwa (a place to rest) with a cloth. When he saw them, he tore them apart and said, "The severest punishment on the Day of Judgment will be for those who try to imitate the creation of Allah." She (the narrator) said, "So we cut it into pieces and made cushions or two cushions from it."
I then tore it and prepared two cushions out of that. A person who was then in that company and whose name was Rabi'a b. 'Ata, the freed slave of Banu Zuhra, asked: Did you hear Abu Mabammad making a mention of A'isha having stated that Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recline upon them? lbn al-Qasim said: No, but I heard Qasim b. Muhammad saying so. (Using translation from Muslim 2107m)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ entered and there was a curtain with pictures on it. I noticed anger on his face, then he came and tore it down. I took it and made it into two armrests. He used to rest his elbows on them in the house.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Gabriel ﷺ came to me and said: I came to you last night and was prevented from entering simply because there were images at the door, for there was a decorated curtain with images on it in the house, and there was a dog in the house. So order the head of the image which is in the house to be cut off so that it resembles the form of a tree; order the curtain to be cut up and made into two cushions spread out on which people may tread; and order the dog to be turned out. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then did so. The dog belonged to al-Hasan or al-Husayn and was under their couch. So he ordered it to be turned out. Abu Dawud said: Al-Nadd means a thing on which clothes are placed like a couch. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4158)
[Machine] That Gabriel ﷺ came and greeted the Prophet ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recognized his voice, so he said, "Enter." He said, "In the house, there is a curtain on the wall with statues. Cut off their heads and make them into cushions or mattresses and trample on them, for we do not enter a house with statues, and likewise..."
[Machine] "O father of Abbas, I am a person whose livelihood is only through the work of my hands. I create these images." Ibn Abbas said to him, "Lower your voice, lower your voice! I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: 'Whoever creates an image in this world will be ordered on the Day of Resurrection to breathe life into it, and he will not be able to.' He would have a severe penalty for this action, and he said, 'Woe to you! If you insist on creating, then restrict yourself to trees and that which does not have a soul.'"
[Machine] The head is the image, so when the head is cut off, it is not in the form of an image.
[Machine] They hated the erecting of statues, and they did not see any harm in what was stepped on by feet.
[Machine] Indeed, didn't you see how I burned it with fire? So when he came out, he said, "Take off this garment from me and cut the heads of these statues in the palace." So he cut them.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: The angels do not enter the house which contains a picture. Busr (b. Sa'id), the transmitter of this tradition, said: Zaid (b. Khalid al-Juhani) then fell it and we paid him a sick visit. There was a curtain with a picture hanging at his door. I then said to 'Ubaid Allah al-Khawlani', the step-son of Maimunah, wife of the Prophet ﷺ: Did Zaid not tell us about pictures on the first day ? 'Ubaid Allah said: Did you not hear him when he said: Except a figure on a garment. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4155)
That Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani narrated to him something in the presence of Saʿid bin 'Ubaidullah Al- Khaulani who was brought up in the house of Maimuna the wife of the Prophet. Zaid narrated to them that Abu Talha said that the Prophet ﷺ said, "The Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a picture." Busr said, "Later on Zaid bin Khalid fell ill and we called on him. To our surprise we saw a curtain decorated with pictures in his house. I said to Ubaidullah Al-Khaulani, "Didn't he (i.e. Zaid) tell us about the (prohibition of) pictures?" He said, "But he excepted the embroidery on garments. Didn't you hear him?" I said, "No." He said, "Yes, he did." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3226)
[Machine] In it, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Did you not say only what is written on the garment?" He said, "Yes, but it is more pleasing to me to say only what is written on a garment that could possibly refer to non-living images." It is in the narration of Abu Talha that is not clear, and in the previous reports there is clarification. Therefore, it is necessary to consider what we have narrated in this chapter based on what we have narrated in the previous chapter, and Allah knows best.

Angels do not enter the house in which there is a picture or portraits. I came to 'A'isha and said to her: This is a news that I have received that Allah's Apostle ﷺ had said: Angels do not enter the house in which there is a picture or a dog, (and further added) whether she had heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ making a mention of it. She said: No (I did not hear this myself), but I narrate to you what I saw him doing. I bear testimony to the fact that he (the Holy Prophet) set out for an expedition. I took a carpet and screened the door with it. When he (the Holy Prophet) came back he saw that carpet and I perceived signs of disapproval on his face. He pulled it until it was torn or it was cut (into pieces) and he said: God has not commanded us to clothe stones and clay. We cut it (the curtain) and prepared two pillowa out of it by stuffing them with the fibre of date-palms and he (the Holy Prophet) did not find fault with it. (Using translation from Muslim 2106f)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to address his army until he reached the Farewell Sermon. He said, "I entrust you to Allah in regards to your religion, your trust, and the conclusion of your deeds." He once saw a man with patches on his clothes, so he faced the rising sun and said, "It is as if the world has presented itself to you three times. Have we become better off today than when we had nothing? You wear one garment in the morning and another in the evening, and you cover your houses just like the Ka'bah is covered." Abdullah bin Yazid said, "Shouldn't I cry when I have lived long enough to see you covering your houses just like the Ka'bah is covered?"

Do not pray behind someone who is asleep or engaged in conversation. Kill the snake and scorpion, even if you are in the middle of prayer. Do not cover the podium with a garment." Is the Kaaba in Kanda?" They replied, "It is not wrong and the Kaaba has not been moved to Kanda." He said, "I will not enter until every curtain is taken apart except for the one on this door." It was narrated to us concerning the dislike of that from Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, and it is similar that it would be due to the extravagance in it. And Allah knows best.

Abu Talha said to Um Sulaim, "I have noticed feebleness in the voice of Messenger of Allah ﷺ which I think, is caused by hunger. Have you got any food?" She said, "Yes." She brought out some loaves of barley and took out a veil belonging to her, and wrapped the bread in part of it and put it under my arm and wrapped part of the veil round me and sent me to Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I went carrying it and found Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the Mosque sitting with some people. When I stood there, Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Has Abu Talha sent you?" I said, "Yes". He asked, "With some food? I said, "Yes" Allah's Apostle then said to the men around him, "Get up!" He set out (accompanied by them) and I went ahead of them till I reached Abu Talha and told him (of the Prophet's visit). Abu Talha said, "O Um Sulaim! Messenger of Allah ﷺ is coming with the people and we have no food to feed them." She said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." So Abu Talha went out to receive Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Allah's Apostle came along with Abu Talha. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Um Sulaim! Bring whatever you have." She brought the bread which Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered to be broken into pieces. Um Sulaim poured on them some butter from an oilskin. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited what Allah wished him to recite, and then said, "Let ten persons come (to share the meal)." Ten persons were admitted, ate their fill and went out. Then he again said, "Let another ten do the same." They were admitted, ate their fill and went out. Then he again said, '"'Let another ten persons (do the same.)" They were admitted, ate their fill and went out. Then he said, "Let another ten persons come." In short, all of them ate their fill, and they were seventy or eighty men. (Using translation from Bukhārī 3578)

I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have a measure of barley and we have a sheep or a goat, so we slaughtered it." The Prophet ﷺ raised his voice to his companions and said, "Get up, for Jabir has made a feast." So I went in front of the people and I came to my wife and she said to me, "Woe to you, and woe to me, do not embarrass me today in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and said, "Put your container down." So they put the meat in it and he poured water over it and he blessed it. Then he said, "Look, a loaf is baking for you." So the loaf started to bake. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Enter ten by ten." So he started to scoop for them and they started eating until he came to the last of them. Indeed, we were refilling our container and our dough was baking just as it was, and our pot was still covered just as it was.

[Machine] After this verse was revealed, someone among the people abrogated the verse regarding the prohibition of entering the houses without permission and said, "There is no blame upon you for entering your own houses." Until the words, "or your own relatives' houses" (Quran 24:61). This is what he meant to say. It means that it is permissible to enter the houses mentioned in that verse. Then he (the narrator) said, a rich man would invite a person from his family for a meal. The person would say, "There is no blame upon me for eating from it." (Thinking that the verse permits this). And the person affected would say, "The poor have more of a right to it than I do." So it became permissible for them to eat from the food on which Allah's name was mentioned and from the food of the people of the Book. Az-Zuhri mentioned from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah regarding the verse, "There is no blame upon the blind." (Quran 24:61) He said, "When the Muslims used to go out for a fight, they would leave their families behind. They would hand over the keys of their houses to them and say, 'We have made it permissible for you to eat from our houses.' But they would feel hesitant and say, 'We will not enter them' while they were absent. Then this verse was revealed, giving them permission to do so.
[Machine] There were people in the past who were blind and disabled, and they were in need of someone to guide them to their homes. If they didn't find food in their homes, they would go with them to the houses of their fathers and mothers, and anyone who accompanied them from the houses disliked being accompanied. They would say that they were taken to houses that were not their own. So Allah revealed in that (verse), "There is no sin on you" [2:236]. In that, He permitted them to eat from wherever they found (food). The Sheikh said, it means if the owner allows it. And they used to feel embarrassed with the owner's consent, so the embarrassment was removed if it was with his consent. And Allah knows best.
40.45 [Machine] The meeting of the evangelists
A companion of the Prophet ﷺ reported him as saying: When two people come together to issue an invitation, accept that of the one whose door is nearer in neighbourhood, but if one of them comes before the other accept the invitation of the one who comes first. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3756)
40.46 [Machine] Washing hands before and after eating
[Machine] In the Torah, it is mentioned that the blessing of food is ablution before and after it. I mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ and he said that the blessing of food is ablution before and after it. Qais bin Rabi'ah is not strong and there is no evidence in the hadith about washing the hands before eating.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever goes to bed with a container of water in his hand and something happens to him, he should not blame anyone but himself." This was narrated by 'Uqail from Ibn Shihab from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abdullah from Abu Sa'id.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever sleeps with impurity in his hand and does not wash it, and something happens to him, he has no one to blame but himself." And the hadith of Suwaid bin Nu'man regarding the rinsing of the mouth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and their rinsing after eating Sawiq is evidence for this matter. It has already been mentioned in the Book of Taharah (purification). The hadith regarding washing hands after eating is good if it is done before eating, and it is weak if it is done after eating. And in the authentic hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas, the Prophet ﷺ went to the restroom and then came back, and food was brought to him. It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, shouldn't you perform ablution?" He said, "I haven't prayed, so I will perform ablution."
40.47 [Machine] The labeling on the food.
When a man enters his house and mention Allah’s name on entering and on his food, the devil says: You have no place to spend the night and no evening meal; but when he enters without mentioning Allah’s name on entering, the devil says: You have found a place to spend the night, and when he does not mention Allah’s name at his food, he says: You have found a place to spend the night and an evening meal. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3765)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to eat with six of his companions. Then a hungry Bedouin came and he fed him with two morsels. The Prophet ﷺ said, "If he had mentioned the name of Allah, it would have sufficed you all. So when any of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. And if he forgets to mention it at the beginning, then let him say 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah) at the beginning and at the end." This is the wording of the Hadith of Ruwah ibn 'Ubada.
40.48 [Machine] Eating and Drinking with the Right Hand.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand. Indeed, Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when one of you drinks, let him drink with his right hand. Verily, Shaytan eats and drinks with his left hand." Abdul Razzaq said that Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah reported to Ma'mar, "Verily, Az-Zuhri narrated to me from Abu Bakr ibn 'Ubaydullah, from Ibn 'Umar, so Ma'mar said to him, 'Verily, Az-Zuhri used to mention the narration from the group, so perhaps he narrated it from both of them.' The Shaykh said, 'This is plausible, for he may have heard it from both of them.'"
