40. Chapter (1/7)
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ said to a man, 'Would you accept that I marry you to so-and-so?' He said, 'Yes.' And he said to the woman, 'Would you accept that I marry you to so-and-so?' She said, 'Yes.' So, he married one of them to their companion without imposing a dowry on her or giving her anything. He was one of those who participated in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, and whoever participated in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah had a share of Khaibar. When he was near death, he said, 'Verily, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married me to so-and-so, and I did not impose a dowry on her or give her anything. And I bear witness to you all that I have given her my share of Khaybar as her dowry.' So, she took a share and sold it for one hundred thousand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The best of dowries is the easiest.'"
40.2 [Machine] There is no time for excessive or minimal friendship" Said Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him: "For leaving excessive presence and it is abundant, and for leaving minimal limit.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Umm Habibah, and it is known that she was in the land of Abyssinia. The Negus married her to him and her dowry was four thousand. Then he prepared her from his own belongings and sent her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with Shurahbil ibn Hasana and all her belongings were from the Negus. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not send anything to her. And the dowry of the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was four hundred dirhams.
[Machine] From the many dowries that women require, I came across this verse: "And you have given one of them a great amount [in gifts]" [Quran 4:20]. This is a good guideline.
[Machine] And he (Umar) said, "Behold! Do not exaggerate in the dowries of women, for it should not reach me that anyone has given more dowry than what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has given or what has been given to him. Otherwise, I will put the surplus in the public treasury." Then, he later descended and a woman from nearby approached him and said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin (commander of the faithful)! Is the Book of Allah more deserving to be followed or your statement?" He replied, "Rather, the Book of Allah is more deserving. What is it?" She said, "You have forbidden people from giving excessive dowries in advance, yet Allah the Most High says in His book, 'And if you give one of them a great amount [in gifts], do not take [back] from it anything.'" [Quran 4:20] Omar said, "Anyone who is more knowledgeable than Umar should come forward, one who has been married twice or three times." Then, he returned to the pulpit and said to the people, "Indeed, I used to forbid you from exaggerating in the dowries of women. So, let a man do with his wealth what appears appropriate to him. This matter is closed."
[Machine] Mu'adh ibn Jabal said, "The storage container contains one thousand and two hundred ounces."
[Machine] The qintar is one thousand and two hundred ounces.
[Machine] The container is filled with the fragrance of light, gold.
[Machine] Ten thousand dirhams or a thousand dinars, and in the narration of Atiyyah from Ibn Abbas, he said: The Qintar is a thousand and two hundred dinars, and from silver it is a thousand and two hundred mithqal, and we narrated from Mujahid that he said: The Qintar is seventy thousand dinars, and Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib said: The Qintar is eighty thousand.
[Machine] That Umar ibn Al-Khattab is the most honest mother of Kulthum bint Ali, and forty thousand dirhams.
[Machine] Ibn Umar used to marry his daughters with a dowry of one thousand dinars, and he would adorn them with four hundred dinars from that.
[Machine] Anas ibn Malik got married to a woman for twenty thousand.
40.3 [Machine] What is recommended from intention in friendship
[Machine] What was the Prophet's ﷺ dowry to his wives? She said, "His dowry to his wives was twelve ounces and a quarter." She said, "Do you know what a quarter is?" I said, "No." She said, "It is half an ounce."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not marry any of his wives or daughters above the age of twelve, except for Umm Habiba. The Negus of Abyssinia married her and gave her a dowry of four thousand, and the Prophet ﷺ married her without giving her anything. This is what was stated about Aisha, and it was narrated by others from Ibn al-Mubarak, who said the same about Umm Habiba.
[Machine] "Ban al-Khattab says, beware of excessive dowries for women, for if it were something that gained the pleasure of Allah or the respect of people, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would have been the most entitled to it. He did not marry any of his wives or give his daughters in marriage for more than twelve uqiyyah, which is four hundred and eighty dirhams. And indeed, one of them would exaggerate with the dowry of his wife until enmity remains in himself, saying, 'I have been burdened with the obligation of nearness.' This narration is also reported by Hammad ibn Zaid from Ayyub, and in another narration of some of them from Ibn Sirin, it is twelve and a half uqiyyah, if it is authentic and agrees with the narration of Abu Salamah from Aisha."
[Machine] He said, "Indeed, a man may become so furious with the dowry that he may say, 'I am burdened with you like the sin of maintaining family ties'."
[Machine] Ali did not touch Fatimah except with a body made of iron.
[Machine] "That I proposed to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , for his daughter, and I mentioned that I have nothing. Then I mentioned his return and his arrival, so I proposed to her. He said, 'Where is the Huthamiyyah armor that I gave you on such and such day?' He said, 'It is with me.' He said, 'Then give it to her.'"
[Machine] Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ , was proposed to, and she said to me, "O Mawla, did you know that Fatima is being proposed to?" I said, "No" or "Yes." She said, "Then propose to her on his behalf." I said, "Do I have anything to propose with?" He said, "By Allah, she keeps hoping in me until I entered upon him, and we were his sons and respected him. When I sat in front of him, I became silent until I could speak. He said, "Do you have any need?" So I remained silent. He asked it three times. He said, "Perhaps you came to propose to Fatima?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Do you have something that you can use to offer for her?" I said, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "What did you do with the armor that I equipped you with?" He said, "By Allah, it is a broken armor, and its price is only four hundred dirhams." He said, "Go, for I have married her to you, and send it to her, so propose to her with it, as mentioned in my book, four hundred dirhams." And Yunus also narrated it from Ibn Ishaq, and he said, "Four dirhams."
[Machine] The son of Abu Talib, Ashadqa Fatima, a coat of iron and a spinning jar, and indeed the dowry of the Prophet's wives was five hundred dirhams.
[Machine] Our friendship used to be like that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us.
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ or he said a youth came and said, "I have married a woman." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Have you looked at her? For indeed, in the eyes of the Ansar, there is something." He said, "Yes, I have looked at her." The Prophet ﷺ said, "How much did you marry her for?" So he mentioned an amount. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is as if you are chiseling gold and silver from the mountainside. We do not have anything to give you today, but I will send you on a mission where you will be rewarded." So he sent him on a mission to the tribe of Banu 'Abs, and the man went to them and asked for help. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, my she-camel has become weak." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached out his hand as if it were leaning on something to stand up and said, "Take her." Abu Hurairah said, "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, I saw her outpace the leader."
[Machine] He came to the Prophet ﷺ seeking his assistance in the dowry of a woman. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "How much have you paid as her dowry?" He replied, "Two hundred silver coins." The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you were to bring from a large water container, it would not increase."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, one of the greatest blessings in women is the ease of their companionship, the simplicity of their speech, and the kindness of their provision."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "One of the blessings of a woman is that her proposal is made easy, her dowry is made easy, and her womb is made easy." Urwah said: "By womb being made easy, he means it is made easy for delivering children." Urwah also said: "And I say from my own knowledge that from the first sign of her being affected by evil eye is that her dowry is increased." This is the narration of Ibn Wahb.
40.4 [Machine] What is permissible to be the dowry?
A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, I have offered myself to you. When she stood for a long time, a man got up and said: Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you have no need for her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: Have you anything to give her as dower ? He replied: I have nothing by this lower garment of mine. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you give your lower garment, you will sit while you have no lower garment. So look for something else. He said: I do not find anything. He said: Look for something, even though it should be an iron ring. The man sought it but found nothing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do you know anything from the Qur'an ? He said: Yes, I know surah so and so, which he named. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have given you her in marriage for the part of the Qur'an which you know. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2111)
[Machine] He heard Sahl bin Saad Al-Saadi saying: I was among the people in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ when a woman stood up and said, "I have offered myself to you, so what is your opinion?" A man from the people stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me." He did not respond to him. Then another woman stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, she has offered herself to you, so what is your opinion?" The man stood up again and said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me." Then a third woman stood up and the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Do you have anything?" He replied, "No." He said, "Go and search, even if it is a ring made of iron." He went and searched but did not find anything. He said, "Go and search, even if it is for a verse from the Quran." He said, "Yes, Surah so and so, and Surah so and so." He said, "Go, for I have married her to you based on what you have from the Quran, as the words of both of them are equal."
The Prophet ﷺ seeing a yellow mark (of perfume) on the clothes of ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf, said, "What about you?" ʿAbdur-Rahman replied, "I have married a woman with a Mahr of gold equal to a date-stone." The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah bestow His Blessing on you (in your marriage). Give a wedding banquet, (Walima) even with one sheep." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6386)
[Machine] Abdul Rahman ibn Awf married a woman from the Ansar (the helpers) on the weight of a nawa (a measure) of gold. He saw the Prophet ﷺ with the joy of the wedding, so he asked him, and he said, "Indeed, I married a woman on the weight of a nawa of gold."
[Machine] Abdulrahman arrived as an immigrant and the Prophet ﷺ formed a brotherhood between him and Saad ibn Rabee’. Saad said to him, "I have two wives, so look which one you like until I divorce her, and when her waiting period ends, you can marry her. I also have wealth, so I will give you half of it." Abdulrahman said, "May Allah bless you in your family and wealth. Show me the way to the marketplace." They showed him the way and he did not return that day until he came back with goods. The Prophet ﷺ then lost him and when he came to him, he had shabby clothes on. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "What happened?" Abdulrahman replied, "I married a woman from the Ansar." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "How much did you give as dowry?" Abdulrahman said, "A date stone of gold weight, or he might have said, the weight of a date stone of gold." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Give me the bone if you have, even if it is from a sheep." Az-Zuhri said, "And he informed us that Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us from Humeid from Anas in a similar manner, except that Anas said, 'He received some fat and meat as profit.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to be gentle even with a sheep.
[Machine] The passage translates to: "Yani al-nawata thalathata darahim wa thuluthan."
[Machine] That Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf married a woman from the Ansar on the condition that her dowry be equivalent to a weight of gold, which was five dirhams. And this is similar to...
[Machine] And five dirhams are called a nugget of gold, just as forty ounces are called a uqiyyah, and just as twenty are called a nash. 14367 Abu Ubaid said, Yahya ibn Saeed narrated to me from Sufyan, who narrated from Mansur, who narrated from Mujahid, who said, "An uqiyyah is forty, a nash is twenty, and a nugget is five."
[Machine] I heard Jabir ibn Abdullah say, "We used to enjoy eating dates and flour in the days of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Abu Bakr, until Umar advised us against it due to an incident involving Amr ibn Huraith."
[Machine] From Jabir, we used to have sexual intercourse during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with just a morsel of food. This is the first narration, except that he came with it and added this phrase, and Ya'qub bin 'Ata' is not relying on it.
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ said: If a man marries a woman in exchange for a handful of food, it would be considered as a dowry."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever gives a handful of dates, or a handful of wheat, or a handful of barley in charity, he will indeed be permissible."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever permits something with a dirham, it means he has permitted marriage." This was narrated by Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah from Wakee' from Ibn Abi Labeebah from his grandfather from the Prophet ﷺ.
[Machine] A man from the Banu Fazara came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have married a woman on the condition that she wears two sandals." The Prophet ﷺ approved of that, meaning he approved of their marriage.
[Machine] An woman from Fazara was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. She had married wearing a pair of sandals. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "Are you satisfied with yourself and your wealth with a pair of sandals?" She replied, "Yes." Then Asim ibn Ubayd Allah ibn Asim ibn Umar ibn Al-Khattab approved it, and the Imams narrated from him despite his weakness.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Marry those who are single among you." They (the people) said, "O Messenger of Allah, what are the criteria between them?" He said, "Whatever their families agree upon." And Abu Abdullah and Abu Bakr narrated to us, they said: Abu al-Abbas narrated to us, narrated by Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, narrated by Yahya, from Hafs ibn Ghayyath and Abi Muawiyah, from Hajjaj ibn Artat, from Abdul Malik ibn Al-Mughira Al-Taifi, from Abdul Rahman ibn Al-Baylamani, from the Prophet ﷺ , with a similar narration. And it has been said about Hajjaj ibn Artat, from Abdul Malik, from Abdul Rahman ibn Al-Baylamani, from Umar ibn Al-Khattab, from the Prophet ﷺ , but it is not considered preserved. Abu Bakr ibn Al-Harith narrated to us, he said: Abu Muhammad ibn Hayyan informed us, narrated by Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Rustah, narrated by Muhammad ibn Amr Zunayj, narrated by Harun ibn Al-Mughira, from Hajjaj, and he mentioned it in its meaning.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ( peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Marry the single people." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, who are the single people?" He said, "Those who agree to the marriage." And it was said about Muhammad ibn Abdurrahman ibn Baylamani, from his father, from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ , with a similar meaning, except that he said, "Those who the family agrees upon, even if it is the length of a spear from Arak." Abu Saad Al-Malini informed us that Abu Ahmad ibn Adi narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Munir Al-Mutairi narrated to us, Al-Ramadi narrated to us, Amru ibn Khalid al-Harrani narrated to us, Salih ibn Abd al-Jabbar narrated to us, and he is Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Hadrami, from Muhammad ibn Abdurrahman ibn Baylamani, so he mentioned him. Abu Ahmad said, "May Allah have mercy on him, Muhammad ibn Abdurrahman ibn Baylamani is weak, and Muhammad ibn Al-Harith is weak, and their weakness is evident in their hadith." The Sheikh said, "And Yahya ibn Ma'in and others from the verifiers of the narrations said the same, and the evidence for the hadith is supported by another chain."
[Machine] We asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the rights of women. He replied, "It is what their husbands agree upon."
[Machine] "Partner raised him to the Prophet, ﷺ , and said: It is not forbidden for a man to marry with a little or a lot of his wealth, if they agree and bear witness. Abu Haroon Al-Abdi is not a proof by himself, and it has been narrated from weak sources, from another aspect, from Abu Sa'id, raised. Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said: It has reached us that Umar Ibn Al-Khattab said: In three handfuls of raisins is the dowry."
[Machine] If she accepts you as her husband, then she will have a dowry.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Women should not be married except with their consent, and they should not be married except with the permission of their guardians, and the dowry should not be less than ten dirhams." Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Harith al-Asbahani narrated to us, Abu Muhammad ibn Hibban narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Isa ibn Sikkin al-Baladi narrated to us, Zakariya ibn al-Hakam al-Ras'ani narrated to us, Abu al-Mughira 'Abd al-Qudus ibn al-Hajjaj narrated to us, Mubashir ibn 'Ubayd mentioned him.
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "There is no friendship without giving at least ten dirhams in charity." Abu Ali al-Hafiz, Mubashir ibn Ubayd, is known to transmit weak hadiths, and this narration is criticized and not accepted. Ali ibn Mubashir ibn Ubayd's hadiths are not supported. The scholar (may Allah have mercy on him) and al-Hajjaj ibn Arta'ah are not to be relied upon or used as evidence, and he did not receive this hadith from al-Hajjaj except through Mubashir ibn Ubayd al-Halabi. They have all unanimously agreed to abandon it, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) criticized him for fabricating hadiths.
