16. Tribes (4/10)
We were forbidden accompany the biers, but it was not stressed upon us. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3167)
'No deceased person should be mourned for more than three days, except a woman should mourn for her husband for four months and ten days, and she should not wear dyed clothes, except for a garment of 'Asb, and she should not wear kohl or perfume, except at the beginning of her purity, when she may apply a little Qust and Azfar.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2087)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ meant by the pledge that we not mourn, so only five women among us fulfilled it, Umm Sulaim, the wife of Mu'adh, the daughter of Abu Sabrah, Umm Al-A'laa, and another woman.
"One of the daughters of the Prophet died, and he sent word to us saying: 'Wash her with water and lotus leaves, and wash her an odd number of times, three, or five, or seven if you think (that is needed), and put some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we finished, we informed him, and he threw his informed him, and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it.' And we combed her hair and put it in three braids, and put it behind her." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1885)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ made a pledge with us and took from us an oath that we will not mourn excessively. Then, a woman from the Ansar said, "The family of so-and-so made me happy during the pre-Islamic period, and they have a special event. I will not pledge allegiance to you until I make them happy as they made me." She then said, "It seemed as if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ agreed with her on that. So, she went and made them happy, then she returned and pledged her allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ." Umm Atiyyah said, "No woman among us fulfilled her pledge except for her and Umm Sulaim bint Milhan."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a pledge with the women that they should not shave their heads. A woman said, "O Messenger of Allah, if a woman brings happiness to me, should I not bring happiness to her?" So, she held his hand and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also held her hand, but he did not pledge allegiance to her.
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, he gathered the women of the Ansar in a house. He then sent Umar ibn Al-Khattab to them, who stood at the door and greeted them. They returned the greeting and he said, "I am the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to you. Say, 'Welcome, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Messenger.' " They said so. He then said, "Pledge to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill your children, nor bring forth false accusations that you fabricate with your hands and feet, nor disobey in what is known." They said, "Yes." Umar extended his hand from outside the door and they extended their hands from inside. Then he said, "O Allah, bear witness." He commanded us to emancipate slaves on both of the Eid days and to forbid us from following funerals or congregating on Fridays. So, I asked him about false accusations and about His saying, "And they do not disobey you in what is known" [Surah Al-Mumtahanah: 12]. He said, "It refers to lamentations."
16.28 [Machine] Khawla Bint Hakim
“If anyone of you, when he stops to camp (while on a journey), says A’udhu bi kalimatil-lahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created), then nothing will harm him in that place until he moves on.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3547)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a Muslim enters a house and says, 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,' and then says it three times, nothing harmful will come to him from that house until he leaves it."
She asked the Messenger of Allah about a woman who sees in her dream that which a man sees. He said: "She does not have to take a bath unless she has an orgasm, just as man does not have to take a bath unless he has an orgasm." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 602)
[Machine] Khawlah bint Hakim Al-Sulamiyyah, who is one of the aunts of the Prophet ﷺ , asked the Prophet ﷺ about a woman who experiences sexual dreams. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered, "She should perform ablution."
[Machine] The righteous woman, Khawla bint Hakim, claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out embracing one of his grandson and said, "By Allah, you are stingy and cowardly, and indeed you are among the chosen ones of Allah. And even the last step that Allah has set foot on is a wrinkle on your face." Sufyan once said, "You are stingy and cowardly."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, do you have a pond?" He said, "Yes, and the one who visits it from your people is beloved to me."
16.29 [Machine] Khawla daughter of Qais bin Qahd
[Machine] And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit Hamza in her house and she would narrate to him ﷺ stories about him. She said, "One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have heard that you will have a pool on the Day of Resurrection that extends from here to there.' He said, 'Indeed, and the people I love the most are those who will quench their thirst from it.' I then presented to him a cloth that had some bread or a piece of meat in it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand in the cloth to eat, and his fingers got burned. He said, 'Hass (meaning, be patient). Then he said, 'O son of Adam, if cold weather afflicts you, say 'Hass (meaning, be patient),' and if hot weather afflicts you, say 'Hass (meaning, be patient).'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the house of Hamza and they were discussing worldly matters. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the world is green and beautiful. Whoever takes it rightfully, it will be blessed for him. And many are those who grab the wealth of Allah and the wealth of His Messenger, they will have the fire on the day they meet Allah."
16.30 [Machine] Khawla bint Thamer Al Ansari
[Machine] She heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "Verily, the world is sweet and green, and indeed there are men who trespass in the wealth of Allah unlawfully. For them, there is the Hellfire on the Day of Resurrection."
16.31 [Machine] Khoula bint Tha'laba
[Machine] I was with him and he was an old man, known for his bad character and irritability. One day, he came to me and I confronted him about something, which made him angry. He said, "You are like the back of my mother." Then he left and sat with his people for a while. Then he came back to me, and he wanted to take advantage of me. I said to him, "No, by the One in whose hand is the soul of Khawilah, I will not yield to you, and I have not said what I said until Allah and His Messenger judge between us with their judgment." She said, "So he jumped at me, but I resisted him. I overpowered him with what a weak old man can be overpowered by a woman, and I pushed him away from me." She said, "Then I went to some of my neighbors and borrowed clothes from them. Then I went until I reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat in front of him. I recounted to him what I experienced from him, and I complained to him about his bad character. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O Khawilah, your cousin is an old man, so fear Allah in dealing with him.' She said, 'By Allah, I did not stop until the Quran was revealed concerning me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ covered his head from what he used to cover it with. Then he withdrew from me, and he said to me, 'O Khawilah, Allah has revealed about you and your companion.' Then he recited to me, starting from the verse 'Indeed, Allah has heard the statement of her...' [Quran 58:1] until the verse 'And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.' [Quran 2:104]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Command him to free a slave.' I said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he does not possess anything to free.' He said, 'Then let him fast for two consecutive months.' I said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he is an old man and is not able to fast.' He said, 'Then let him feed sixty poor people and give them each a sa' of dates.' I said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he does not have anything to feed them with.' He said, 'Then I will help him with a basket of dates.' I said, 'And I, O Messenger of Allah, will also help him with another basket of dates.' He said, 'You have done well, so go and give charity on his behalf. Then advise your cousin (to do good).' She said, 'So I did that.' Abdullah said, my father said, Sa'd obtained a skin of dates."

16.32 [Machine] From the conversation of Fatima bint Qais, the sister of Dahhak bin Qais
[Machine] "I did not tighten my clothing, then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He asked me, 'How many times did your husband divorce you?' I said, 'Three times.' He said, 'It is true, you have no financial support, but you can stay in the house of your cousin's son, Ibn Um Maktoom, for he is blind. Remove your clothing from yourself. When your waiting period is completed, inform me.' She said, 'Then he proposed to me with a proposal that included Muawiyah and Abu Al-Jahm.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, Muawiyah is a humble man of a gentle nature, and Abu Al-Jahm is harsh towards women. But you should marry Osama bin Zaid, or he said, 'Marry Osama bin Zaid.'"
[Machine] "About Fatimah, the daughter of Qais, in his biography."
"I heard Fatimah bint Qais say that her husband divorced her ttree times, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not say that she was entitled to accommodation and maintenance." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2035)
[Machine] Her husband divorced her three times, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded her to observe the 'iddah (waiting period) in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum.

Abu Bakr bin Abu Jahm bin Sukhair Al-Adawi said: “I heard Fathima bint Qais say: 'The Messenger of Allah said to me: “When you become lawful, tell me.” So I told him.' Then Muawiyah, Abu Jahm bin Sukhair and Usamah bin Zaid proposed marriage to her. The Messenger of Allah said: 'As for Muawiyah, he is a poor man who has no money. As from Abu Jahm he is a man who habitually beats woman. But Usamah (is good).' She gestured with her hand, saying: 'Usamah, Usamah!?' The Messenger of Allah said to her: 'Obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger is better for you.' She said: 'So I married him and I was pleased with him.' ” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1869)

Abu Salamah bin ‘Abd Al Rahman reported on the authority of Fatimah daughter of Qais Abu ‘Amr bin Hafs divorced her (Fatimah daughter of Qais) absolutely when he was away from home and his agent sent her home barley. She was displeased with it. He said “I swear by Allah, you have no claim on us. She then came to Apostle of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said to her “No maintenance is due to you from him. He ordered her to spend the waiting period in the house of Umm Sharik but he said afterwards “that is a woman whom my Companions visit. Spend the waiting period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum for he is blind and you can undress. Then when you are in a position of being remarried, tell me.” She said “When I was in a position to remarry, I mentioned to him that Mu’awiyah bin Abi Sufyan and Abu Jahm had asked me in marriage. The Apostle of Allah ﷺsaid “As for Abu Jahm, he does not put down his stick from his shoulder, and as for Mu’awiyah he is a poor man who has no property; marry Usamah bin Zaid. I disliked him but he said “Marry Usamah bin Zaid. So, I married him. And Allah prospered him very much and I was envied.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2284)

[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, that he did not give her a place to live nor provide for her. Hasan said, Al-Suddi mentioned this to Ibrahim and al-Sha'bi and they said, 'Umar said, "We do not believe that Fatimah had a place to live or provision."
I was with al-Aswad b. Yazid sitting in the great mosque, and there was with us al-Sha'bi, and he narrated the narration of Fatima bint Qais (Allah be pleased with her) that Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not make any provision for lodging and maintenance allowance for her. Al-Aswad caught hold of some pebbles in his fist and he threw them towards him saying: Woe be to thee, you narrate like it, whereas Umar said: We cannot abandon the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of our Apostle ﷺ for the words of a woman. We do not know whether she remembers that or she forgets. For her, there is a provision of lodging and maintenance allowance. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, said:" Turn them not from their houses nor should they themselves go forth unless they commit an open indecency" (lxv. 1). (Using translation from Muslim 1480n)

[Machine] On a certain day, the Prophet ﷺ came quickly and ascended the pulpit. It was announced to the people to gather for a congregational prayer. The people assembled, and he said, "O people, I did not call you out of desire or fear, but Tamim ad-Dari has informed me that a group of people from the people of Palestine embarked on a ship and were tossed by the wind onto an island from the islands of the sea. Suddenly, they found themselves before a creature with a lot of hair, and they could not determine if it was male or female due to its excessive hair. They asked, 'Who are you?' It replied, 'I am the Jassasah.' They said, 'Inform us.' It said, 'I am not here to inform or give you any information. However, in this monastery, there is a poor man who is eager to inform you and provide you with the information you seek.' They entered the monastery, and found a blind and cross-eyed man bound in iron. They asked, 'Who are you?' He said, 'We are the Arabs.' He asked, 'Has the Prophet been sent among you?' They replied, 'Yes.' He asked, 'Do the Arabs follow him?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'That is good for them.' Then he asked, 'What has happened to Persia? Have they shown any signs of following him?' They said, 'No, they have not.' He said, 'They will soon be shown signs.' Then he asked, 'What has happened to the spring of Zughar?' They replied, 'It is flowing as usual.' He asked, 'What has happened to Lake Tiberias?' They replied, 'It is also flowing as usual.' He asked, 'What has happened to the palm trees of Baysan? Are they still bearing fruit?' They replied, 'Yes, their first fruits have ripened.' At that, he jumped up, thinking he would fall and run away. They asked, 'Who are you?' He said, 'I am the Dajjal. Surely, I will traverse the entire Earth, except for Makkah and Madinah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Give glad tidings to the Muslim community, for this city of Madinah will not be entered by the Dajjal."

Go to the house of Umm Sharik and do not make any decisions without consulting me". Then, he said, "Indeed, the brothers of Umm Sharik, from the early emigrants, will visit her. Go to the son of Umm Maktoom, for he is a man who has lost his sight. If you remove any of your clothes, he will not see anything." She said, "When I came out of my iddah (waiting period), Muawiyah and Abu Jahl bin Houthaifa proposed to me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for Muawiyah, he is without wealth. And as for Abu Jahl, he is a man who never removes his cane from his shoulder. Where are you in regards to Osama bin Zaid?" It seemed like her family disliked it, so she said, "I will not marry anyone except the one to whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me." So, she married him."

Stay with him and when you become free, do not forget about me.' She said, 'By Allah, I do not think that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted me for himself at that time.' She said, 'When I became free, he proposed to me on behalf of Usama ibn Zaid and married me to him.' Abu Salama said, 'She narrated her story to me and I wrote it with my own hand.'

Fatimah, when she heard Marwan's statement, said, "Between you and us is the Quran. Allah ﷻ says, 'Do not drive them out of their houses, nor shall they themselves leave, except in case they are guilty of some open indecency.' [Quran 65:1] And it continues, 'You do not know; Allah may bring about something new after that.' [Quran 65:1] It is meant for those who have a guardian. So, what matter can come up after three pronouncements of talaq?"

[Machine] Her husband divorced her three times, so she came to the Prophet ﷺ to complain to him. He did not give her a place to live nor financial support. Umar ibn al-Khattab said, "We do not abandon the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ for the words of a woman, perhaps she misunderstood." 'Amir narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded her to live in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum.
[Machine] Qabeeshatu (a woman's name) was sent to by Marwan, so I asked her what made her bring out a woman from her house before her waiting period had ended. She said, "Because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to do so." Then she narrated to me his statement. She said, "I also argue with you using the Book of Allah, where Allah says in His Book, 'When you divorce women, divorce them for their prescribed waiting period and count the waiting period, and fear Allah, your Lord. Do not turn them out of their houses, nor should they leave, unless they commit an open immorality.' (Surah Al-Talaq, 1) until 'Perhaps Allah will bring about after that a matter.' (Surah Al-Talaq, 1) Then Allah says, 'And when they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms.' (Surah Al-Baqarah, 231) By Allah, Allah did not mention keeping them after the third (divorce) along with what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to do." I then returned to Marwan and informed him of her words. Marwan said, "The statement of a woman, the statement of a woman." Then he commanded the woman to be returned to her house until her waiting period had ended.

[Machine] Her husband divorced her in a state of impurity, so she disputed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding her accommodation and financial support. She said, "He did not provide me with accommodation or financial support." He said, "O daughter of Al-Qays, accommodation and financial support are only for those who have a way of returning."

She said that her husband divorced her irrevocably, and she referred her dispute with him, concerning accommodation and maintenance, to the Messenger of Allah. She said: 'He did not give me (the right to) accommodation and maintenance, and he told me to observe my 'Iddah in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum,'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3548)

[Machine] My husband divorced me three times, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ. He did not provide me with a place to live or financial support. He said that providing a place to live and financial support is only for those whose husbands have the right to take them back. He commanded me to live with Ibn Umm Maktum, the blind man.

My husband divorced me with three pronouncements. I decided to move (from his house to another place). So I came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: Move to the house of your cousin 'Amr b. Umm Maktum and spend your period of 'Idda there. (Using translation from Muslim 1480m)

[Machine] I arrived in the city and visited Fatimah bint Qays. She told me that her husband divorced her during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ then sent him on a military expedition. Her brother told me to leave the house, but I said that I needed financial support and a place to stay until the waiting period (idah) is over. He refused. So, I went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him that so-and-so divorced me, and his brother expelled me and denied me financial support and a place to stay. The Prophet ﷺ sent for him and asked, "What is your relationship with the daughter of the family of Qays?" He replied, "O Messenger of Allah, my brother divorced her three times." The Prophet ﷺ then said to me, "Listen, daughter of the family of Qays. The financial support and place to stay are the responsibility of a woman's husband as long as he has the right to return to her. But if he doesn't have the right to return, then there is no financial support or place to stay for you. So, leave and stay with so-and-so woman." Then, he added, "She will be spoken to," and he instructed me to go to Ibn Umm Maktum, who is blind and cannot see you. He also said, "Don't marry anyone until I marry you myself." She continued, "A man from the Quraysh proposed to me, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ to seek his opinion. He asked me, 'Will you marry someone else whom I find more beloved to you?' I said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He then said, 'Marry me to whomever you wish.' So, he married me to Usamah bin Zaid."

[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she said: One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and prayed the prayer of migration, then he sat down. The people became startled, so he said, "Sit, O people, for I did not rise from my place due to fear, but rather Tamim Ad-Dari came to me and informed me of news that deprived me of sleep and comfort. So I wanted to share with you the joy of your Prophet ﷺ. He informed me that a group from his relatives, the Banu 'Amir, rode the sea and a fierce wind overcame them. The wind pushed them towards an unknown island. They sat in wooden boats until they reached the island. Then they found a creature with a lot of hair, not knowing if it was a man or a woman. They greeted the creature with salaam, and the creature replied with salaam. They said, 'Can you inform us?' The creature replied, 'I am not here to inform you or ask for information. However, this monastery became a hardship for you. Inside, there is someone who has been yearning to tell you and ask you about their fate. They said, 'Who are you?' She said, 'I am the spy.' So they went until they reached the monastery. There they found a man who was severely bound, showing a lot of sadness and complaining. They greeted him, and he replied, asking, 'Who are you?' They said, 'We are from the Arabs.' He said, 'What have the Arabs done? Did their Prophet emerge?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'What did they do?' They said, 'They believed in him and affirmed his truthfulness.' He said, 'That is better for them.' He had an enemy, and Allah made him manifest to them. He said, 'So are the Arabs today united in their religion and their word?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'So what did the spring of Zughar do?' They said, 'It is wholesome. Its people drink from it, and their crops are irrigated by it.' He said, 'So what did the palm tree between 'Amman and Bayt Al-Maqdis do?' They said, 'Good. Its vegetation feeds its camels every year.' He said, 'So what did the Lake of Tiberias do?' They said, 'Full.' He said, 'So it sighed, and sighed, and sighed, and then he swore by Allah who there is none worthy of worship except Him, 'By Allah, there is no narrow road or wide road in the flat or mountain except that there is an angel holding a drawn sword until the Day of Resurrection, preventing Ad-Dajjal from entering it.' He said, 'Then I met Al-Muharrar bin Abi Hurayrah, and I informed him of the Hadith of Fatimah bint Qays. He testified to what I testified, except that he said, 'I bear witness that 'Aishah also narrated to me like she narrated to you, Fatimah.' Except that she said, 'The two sanctuaries are sacred: Makkah and Al-Madinah.'"

[Machine] One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came hurriedly and climbed the pulpit. It was announced to the people that the congregational prayer was about to begin. So the people gathered and he said, "O people, I did not call you out of desire or fear. Rather, Tamim ad-Dari informed me that a group from the people of Palestine set sail in the sea and the wind cast them to an island from the islands of the sea. There, they found a beast with a lot of hair, so much so that they couldn't tell if it was male or female. They asked, 'Who are you?' and it replied, 'I am al-Jassasah.' They asked it to tell them about themselves, but it said, 'I am neither a teller nor a seeker of information. However, there is a poor man in this monastery who can inform you and seek information from you.' So they entered the monastery and found a man, blind in one eye, chained with iron. They asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'We are the Arabs.' They asked, 'Was a Prophet sent amongst you?' He replied, 'Yes.' They asked, 'Did the Arabs follow him?' He replied, 'Yes.' They asked, 'What did Persia do?' He replied, 'Did it appear on them?' They replied, 'No.' He asked, 'And what did Byzantium do? Did it appear on them?' They replied, 'No.' He said, 'It will surely appear on them too. And what did the eye of Za'ghar do?' They replied, 'It is covered with a flood.' He asked, 'And what did the palm trees of Baysan do? Did they bear fruit?' They replied, 'Yes, their first fruits.' He leaped with his legs, until we thought that he was about to run away. So we asked, 'Who are you?' He said, 'I am the Dajjal (the Antichrist). By Allah, I will soon be given permission to emerge and I will traverse the entire earth, except Makkah and Madinah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Rejoice, O Muslims! This is the blessed land that he will not be able to enter.'"

16.33 [Machine] A woman from the Ansar
[Machine] A woman from the Ansar told me that she was alive on this day. If you want, I can introduce you to her. I said no. She said, "I entered upon Umm Salamah and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon her, seeming angry. I covered myself with my shield because of you. He spoke words that I did not understand, so I said, 'O mother of the believers, it's as if I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ angry.' She said, 'Yes, didn't you hear what he said?' I said, 'What did he say?' She said, 'He said that when evil spreads in the land and people do not prevent it, then Allah ﷻ sends His punishment upon the people of the earth.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, even if there are righteous people among them?' He said, 'Yes, there are righteous people among them. They will be afflicted with what afflicts people, then Allah ﷻ will take them to His forgiveness and mercy, or to His mercy and forgiveness.'"

16.34 [Machine] Aunt Haseen bin Muhsin
[Machine] An aunt of his came to the Prophet ﷺ needing something. She finished with her need, so he said to her, "Are you married?" She said, "Yes." He said, "So where are you from your husband?" She said, "He is on a journey." He said, "How are you for him?" She said, "I am not leaving anything that he needs except what I am unable to do." He said, "Consider where you are from him, for it is paradise and hellfire for you."
