[Machine] "I was with a man from the tribe of Makhzun, and he divorced me instantly. So, I sent to his family seeking maintenance, but they said I was not entitled to any maintenance from them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "They are not obligated to provide for you, and you are to observe the waiting period. Go to the house of Umm Sharik and do not make any decisions without consulting me". Then, he said, "Indeed, the brothers of Umm Sharik, from the early emigrants, will visit her. Go to the son of Umm Maktoom, for he is a man who has lost his sight. If you remove any of your clothes, he will not see anything." She said, "When I came out of my iddah (waiting period), Muawiyah and Abu Jahl bin Houthaifa proposed to me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for Muawiyah, he is without wealth. And as for Abu Jahl, he is a man who never removes his cane from his shoulder. Where are you in regards to Osama bin Zaid?" It seemed like her family disliked it, so she said, "I will not marry anyone except the one to whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me." So, she married him."

I swear by Allah that you have no claim on us. she went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: There is no maintenance due to you from him, and he commanded her to spend the 'Idda in the house of Umm Sharik, but then said: That is a woman whom my companions visit. So better spend this period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum, for he is a blind man and yon can put off your garments. And when the 'Idda is over, inform me. She said: When my period of 'Idda was over, I mentioned to him that Mu'awiya b. Abu Sufyan and Jahm had sent proposal of marriage to me, whereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: As for Abu Jahm, he does not put down his staff from his shoulder, and as for Mu'awiya, he is a poor man having no property; marry Usama b. Zaid. I objected to him, but he again said: Marry Usama; so I married him. Allah blessed there in and I was envied (by others).

He told her to observe her 'Iddah in the house of Umm Sharik, then he said: "She is a woman whose house is frequented by my Companions. Abu Salamah bin ‘Abd Al Rahman reported on the authority of Fatimah daughter of Qais Abu ‘Amr bin Hafs divorced her (Fatimah daughter of Qais) absolutely when he was away from home and his agent sent her home barley. She was displeased with it. He said “I swear by Allah, you have no claim on us. She then came to Apostle of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said to her “No maintenance is due to you from him. He ordered her to spend the waiting period in the house of Umm Sharik but he said afterwards “that is a woman whom my Companions visit. Spend the waiting period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum for he is blind and you can undress. Then when you are in a position of being remarried, tell me.” She said “When I was in a position to remarry, I mentioned to him that Mu’awiyah bin Abi Sufyan and Abu Jahm had asked me in marriage. The Apostle of Allah ﷺsaid “As for Abu Jahm, he does not put down his stick from his shoulder, and as for Mu’awiyah he is a poor man who has no property; marry Usamah bin Zaid. I disliked him but he said “Marry Usamah bin Zaid. So, I married him. And Allah prospered him very much and I was envied.”

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Yazid, the mawla of al-Aswad ibn Sufyan from Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf from Fatima bint Qays that Abu Amr ibn Hafs divorced her absolutely while he was away in Syria. His agent sent her some barley and she was displeased with it, saying, "By Allah, I don't expect anything from you." She went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned it to him. He said, "You have no maintenance." He then ordered her to spend her idda in the house of Umm Sharik. Then he said, "This is a woman whom my companions visit. Spend the idda in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum. He is a blind man and you can undress at his home. When you are free to remarry, tell me." She continued, "When I was free to remarry, I mentioned to him that Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan and Abu Jahm ibn Hisham had asked for me in marriage. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'As for Abu Jahm, he never puts down his stick from his shoulder (i.e. he is always travelling), and as for Muawiya he is a poor man with no property. Marry Usama ibn Zayd.' I objected to him and he said, 'Marry Usama ibn Zayd,' so I married him, and Allah put good in it and I was content with him."

[Machine] She was under the authority of a man from the Quraysh tribe of Banu Makhzum, but he divorced her abruptly. She then sent a message to her family seeking financial support, but they informed her that they had no provision for her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of this, and he said, "You have no financial support, but you have an 'iddah (waiting period). Move to the house of Umm Sharik and do not burden us with your presence." Then he said, "Umm Sharik is a woman who is visited by her brothers from the Muhajirin, but move to the house of Ibn Umm Maktum, for he is a blind man. If you take off your clothes, he will not see anything, and do not burden us with your presence." So she went to the house of Ibn Umm Maktum, and when she arrived, she remembered that Mu'awiyah and Abu Jahm had proposed to her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for Mu'awiyah, he is a man without wealth, and as for Abu Jahm, he does not take his cane off his shoulder. So where do you stand with regard to Usamah?" Her family seemed to dislike this, so she said, "By Allah, I will not marry anyone except the one whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has mentioned." Therefore, she married Usamah. Muhammad ibn Amr said that Muhammad ibn Ibrahim said, "O Fatimah, fear Allah, for you have known what this meant."

[Machine] Abu Amr ibn Hafs divorced her three times and ordered her to receive maintenance and let her go. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him towards Yemen, and Khalid ibn Al-Walid set out with a group from the tribe of Makhzum to meet the Prophet ﷺ while he was at the house of Maymunah. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Amr ibn Hafs divorced Fatimah three times. Does she have any maintenance?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "She does not have maintenance or a dwelling." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to her that she should move to her Aunt Sharikah, then he sent to her that the Muhajirun would come to her first, so move to the house of Ibn Umm Maktum. [Machine] Al-Qa'nabi narrated on the authority of Abdul Aziz ibn Muhammad, who narrated from Muhammad ibn Amr, who narrated from Abu Salamah, who narrated from Fatimah bint Qays, that she was married to a man from the Banu Makhzum tribe. He divorced her instantly. She sent word to her family to seek financial support, but they refused, saying they had no responsibility towards her financial needs. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard about this, he said, "You are not entitled to financial support from them, but you must observe the waiting period. Go to the household of Umm Shareek instead." Then he said, "Umm Shareek will be visited by her brothers from among the Muhajireen. No, you must go to the household of Ibn Umm Maktum. He is a blind man; even if you were to uncover your clothing, he wouldn't see anything. And don't cause harm to yourself." When the waiting period ended, she mentioned that Muawiyah ibn Abu Sufyan and Abu Jahl proposed to marry her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Muawiya has no wealth, and Abu Jahl doesn't even remove his stick from his shoulder. Where are you in regard to Usama?" It seemed as if her family disliked that. She said, "By Allah, I will only marry the one to whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructs me to marry." So she married him.

[Machine] She was married to a man from the Banu Makhzum tribe, but he divorced her immediately. She sent a message to her family seeking financial support, but they replied that they have no responsibility towards her expenses. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was informed about this, and he said, "They have no obligation to provide for you, but you must observe 'iddah (waiting period). Move to the house of Umm Sharik." Then he said, "Umm Sharik's brothers, who are among the early migrants, will visit her. Move to the house of the son of Umm Makhtoom, as he is a blind man. If you undress in front of him, he will not see anything. Do not burden us with your presence." When the waiting period ended, some men mentioned her to the Prophet ﷺ, asking, "Where is she in comparison to Usama?" It seemed that her family disliked this, so she said, "By Allah, I will only marry the one whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chooses for me." Thus, she married him.

So she went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of her situation. He told her that her family was not obligated to support her, but she must observe the waiting period. He advised her to go to Umm Sharik, who was a woman frequented by her brothers from the early Muslim migrants. She then should go to the son of Umm Maktoom, who was a blind man. If she were to undress in front of him, he would not see anything. The Prophet ﷺ added, "Do not put us in a difficult position." She replied, "When I am free of my obligations, men will want to propose to me." The Prophet then asked, "And what about Osama?" She did not like that suggestion and said, "I will only marry the one you mentioned." So she got married. Muhammad bin Amr narrated from Muhammad bin Ibrahim that Aisha used to advise Fatimah, saying, "Fear Allah, for I know what led to this."
