16. Tribes
[Machine] There was a man in Sham named Ma'dan. Abu Darda used to recite the Quran to him. Abu Darda lost him and one day he met him while he was riding a camel. Abu Darda said to him, "O Ma'dan, how is the Quran that used to be with you? How are you doing with it today?" He replied, "Allah knows best what happened to it and He has been generous." Abu Darda asked, "O Ma'dan, are you now living in a city or a village?" He replied, "No, I am living in a village near the city." Abu Darda said, "Wait a minute, may the curse of Allah be upon you, O Ma'dan. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'There are no five members of a tribe among whom the Adhan is not called nor the Salat established, except that the Shaytan has gained control over them. The wolf then attacks the lone sheep from among them.' You should reside in cities, O Ma'dan."
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: If there are three men in a village or in the desert among whom prayer is not offered (in congregation), the devil has got the mastery over them. So observe (prayer) in congregation), for the wolf eats only the straggling animal. Sa'ib said: By the word Jama'ah he meant saying prayer in company or in congregation. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 547)
[Machine] Abu Darda has some free time, so he asks if he should go out or stay at home. If he is told to go out, he responds that he cannot find anything better for himself than what the Messenger of Allah has commanded us. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, the rich people go for Hajj and we are unable to go, they fight in battles and we are unable to fight." The Messenger of Allah then said, "Shall I not tell you about something that, if you do it, will be better for you than what any of them has done? It is to say 'Allahu Akbar' 33 times, 'Subhan Allah' 33 times, and 'Alhamdulillah' 33 times after every prayer."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "Whoever recites ten verses from the end of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the trials of the Dajjal." Hajjaj asked, "Whoever recites the last ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf?"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is nothing heavier on the scale than good character."
Perhaps he (the man accompanying her) intends to cohabit with her. They said: Yes. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have decided to curse him with such a curse as may go along with him to his grave. How can he own him (the child to be born) and that is not lawful for him, and how can he take him as a servant for that is not lawful for him? (Using translation from Muslim 1441a)
[Machine] He asked the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , about this verse: "Those who believe and do righteous deeds, for them there will be good tidings in the worldly life." [Quran 10:64] He said, "It is the righteous dream that a Muslim sees or is shown."
[Machine] I asked Abu Darda about a man from the people of Egypt, and he mentioned something from the Prophet ﷺ and something similar to it.
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Can any of you not recite one third of the Quran every day?' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we are weaker than that and unable to do so.' He said, 'Verily, Allah has divided the Quran into three parts, so say: He is Allah, [who is] One,' which is one part of His parts.'"
[Machine] The translation of the passage is: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Is it difficult for any of you to recite and comprehend its meaning?'"
[Machine] Bukayr ibn Abi Sumeit informed us with this chain of narration, with its likeness being similar.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: Shall I not inform you of the best of your actions, the purest of them before your King, and the highest in status for you, which are better for you than giving gold and silver or encountering your enemy and striking their necks and them striking yours? It is the remembrance of Allah.
[Machine] "What do you say about Allah's saying, 'For them is good tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter'? [Surah Yunus 64] He said, 'You have asked about something that I have not heard anyone ask about after a man asked the Messenger of Allah about it, ﷺ .' He said, 'Their good tidings in the worldly life are righteous dreams that a Muslim sees or that are seen for him. And their good tidings in the Hereafter is Paradise.'"
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "Whoever from my Ummah dies without associating anything with Allah, will enter Paradise, except for whom my companion Abi Darda dislikes."
[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "The parents are the middle gates of Paradise."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "He (the servant) got up one night and called his servant, but she took a long time to come. So he cursed her, and she said, 'Do not curse, for Abu Darda reported to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: Verily, the cursers will not be witnesses or intercessors on the Day of Resurrection."
He heard Abu Ad-Darda say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: 'Is there recitation in every prayer?' He said: 'Yes.' A man among the Ansar said: 'Is that obligatory?' He (Abu Ad-Darda) turned to me (Kathir), as I was closest of the people to him, and said: 'I think that if the Imam leads the people, that is sufficient for them.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 923)
[Machine] Muawiyah bought a cup made of silver for a price that was less than or equal to its value. Abu Darda said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade such transactions except if it is like for like.
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ: He said, "There is nothing heavier in the scale than good character."
[Machine] I met Abu Darda and he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The example of the one who gives in charity at the time of death is like the example of the one who seeks guidance when he is full.'"
"A man from the Quraish broke a tooth of a man from the Ansar. So he appealed to Mu'awiyah against him. He said to Mu'awiyah: 'O Commander of the Believers! This person broke one of my teeth.' Mu'awiyah said: 'We will try to get satisfaction for you.' And the other person insisted that Mu'awiyah get him to agree [but he was not satisfied]. So Mu'awiyah said him: 'It is up to your companion.' Abu Ad-Darda' was sitting with him, so Abu Ad-Darda said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying [he said: 'My ears heard and my heart remembered]: "There is no man who is struck in his body and he forgives for it, except that Allah raises him a level and removes a sin from him.'" The Ansari said: 'Did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: "My ears heard it and my heart remembered it.' He said: 'Then I will leave it to him.' Mu'awiyah said: 'Surely you should not suffer.' So he ordered that he be given some wealth." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1393)
[Machine] To whom do you belong? I said, "I belong to the people of Kufa." He said, "Do you recite the recitation of Ibn Mas'ud?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then recite, 'By the night when it covers'." I said, "By the night when it covers, and [by] the day when it appears, and [by] the male and female." He said, "That is how I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite it." He said, "I think he laughed."
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "Whoever defends the honor of his Muslim brother, it is the right of Allah ﷻ to defend him from the fire of Hell on the Day of Judgment."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt thirsty, so he broke his fast and water was brought to him, and he performed ablution.
[Machine] He arrived in Damascus and entered the mosque of Damascus and prayed two units of prayer in it and said, "O Allah, grant me a righteous companion." Then he came and sat with Abu Darda and Abu Darda said to him, "Who are you?" He said, "I am from the people of Kufa." Abu Darda said, "How did you hear Ibn Umm Abd reciting: 'By the night when it covers, and [by] the day when it appears?' He said, 'Alqamah and Zikr and An-Nisa.' Abu Darda said, 'I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' So they continued to question me until they doubted me. Then he said, 'Wasn't there among you the one who had the sleeping mat and the one who had the secret that no one else knew, and the one who was saved from the devil by the tongue of the Prophet ﷺ ?' The one with the sleeping mat was Ibn Mas'ud, and the one with the secret was Hudhaifah, and the one who was saved from the devil was 'Ammar.

[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever memorizes the first ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the trial of the Dajjal (the Antichrist)."
[Machine] "Narrated by the Prophet of Allah ﷺ , he mentioned its likeness, then returned to the Hadith of Abdus Samad. He said: "Hammam narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Salim, from the Hadith of Ma'dan, from Abu Ad-Darda', who conveyed from the Prophet of Allah ﷺ that he said: 'Whoever memorizes ten verses from Surah Al-Kahf...'"
"Whoever protects his brother's honor, Allah protects his face from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1931)
[Machine] On the authority of Alqamah, he said: "I visited Sham (Syria) and entered the mosque, where I prayed two Rak'ahs (units of prayer) and said: 'O Allah, make it easy for me to find a righteous companion.' Then he mentioned the meaning of the hadith of Shu'bah."
Allah bestowed special wisdom and patience to this Ummah of the Prophet ﷺ
Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ said, "I never heard being called with this junta before this or after this. Allah Almighty said: ‘O Jesus, I will raise a nation after you who will praise Me and be grateful to Me when I bestow what they love, and they will expect reward and be patient when I afflict them with what they hate, although they had no forbearance or knowledge.’ Jesus said: ‘O Lord, how can this be if they had no forbearance or knowledge?’ Allah said: ‘I will give them from My forbearance and My knowledge.’"
[Machine] "I visited Abu Darda in his illness, at the time of his death. He asked me, 'O nephew, what brought you to this city? What is the reason?' I said, 'I came here for no reason, except to maintain the connection between you and my father, Abdullah bin Salam.' Abu Darda said, 'This is a terrible moment of falsehood! I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , saying, "Whoever performs ablution and performs it well, then stands and prays two or four rak'ahs and doubts [whether they are two or four], it is easy for him to remember [Allah] and show humility [in the prayer]. Then he seeks forgiveness from Allah and Allah forgives him."'" Abdullah said, "Abu Darda narrated this to us, and he was narrated to by Sa'id bin Abu Rabee' Al-Samman, who was narrated to by Sadqah bin Abu Sahl Al-Hunawi. Abdullah and Ahmad bin Abdullah Al-Maliki were confused about the name of the sheikh, and Saalih bin Abu Sadqah said, 'Indeed, he is Sadqah bin Abu Sahl Al-Hunawi.'"

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever dies while not associating any partners with Allah will be admitted to Paradise. And I have not mentioned this to you except at the time of my death. And the witnessing martyrs are those who testify to it. Abu Ad-Darda then said, 'My brother has spoken the truth, and he would only inform you of this at the time of his death.'
The Prophet ﷺ said: Your love for a thing causes blindness and deafness. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5130)

[Machine] Alqamah Al-Shami came and prayed two units of prayer. He said, "O Allah, grant me a righteous companion." So, I sat next to a man and he turned out to be Abu Al-Darda. He asked me, "Who are you?" I said, "I am from the people of Kufa." He asked, "Do you know how Abdullah used to recite this verse?" [By the night when it covers, and by the day when it appears, and by He who created the male and female.] So, I said, "He used to recite it as: 'By the night when it covers, and by the day when it appears, and by the male and female.'" He said, "That is how I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite it." He continued to question me until I began to doubt myself. Then, he said, "Isn't among you the one who uses the cushion and the tooth stick?" He meant Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. "Isn't among you the one whom Allah protected from the tongue of his Prophet from the Devil?" He meant Ammar ibn Yasar. "Isn't among you the one who knows the secret that no one else knows?" He meant Hudhayfah.

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Allah, the Exalted, says: Son of Adam, do not be helpless in performing four rak'ahs for Me at the beginning of the day: I will supply what you need till the end of it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1289)
My friend (i.e. the Prophet) instructed me to observe three practices which I never leave: he instructed me to fast three days every month, and not to sleep but after observing the witr, and to observe supererogatory prayer in the forenoon while traveling and while resident. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1433)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The parent is the middle door of Paradise, so protect that door or leave it."
[Machine] Whoever is given a share of kindness will also be given a share of goodness, and there is nothing heavier in the scale than good character.
"We arrived in Ash-Sham and we went to Abu Ad-Darda. So he said: 'Is there any among you who can recite for me according to the recitation of 'Abdullah?'" He said: "They pointed to me, so I said: 'Yes, [I (can recite)].' He said: 'How did you hear 'Abdullah recite this Ayah: By the night as it envelopes?'" He said: "I said: 'I heard him recite it: "Wal-Laili Idha Yaghsha, Wadh-Dhakari Wal-Untha" Abu Ad-Darda said: 'Me too, By Allah, this is how I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reciting it. But these people want me to recite it: Wa Ma Khalaqa but I will not follow them.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2939)

[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "The heaviest thing in the scale on the Day of Judgment is good character."
[Machine] About this verse {For them is good tidings in the life of this world and in the Hereafter} [Quran 10:64]? So he said: You have asked about something that I have not heard anyone ask about after a man asked the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , about it. He said: It is the righteous dream, which a Muslim man sees or is informed of in his life in this world and in his life in the Hereafter, Paradise.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the wealth of the ruler. He said, "Whatever Allah has given you of it without asking or oversight, then take it and support yourself." Al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "There is no harm in it as long as one does not vie for it or seek favour in return."
