65. Prophetic Commentary on the Quran (3/10)

65.4 Surat an-Nisa’ (Women) (contd …)

[Machine] Ibn Abbas said, "He who is arrogant and proud in his stance, his provision will not increase for him. They have a specified way (of punishment)," meaning, stoning for the adulteress and flogging for the unmarried, and others said, "two, three, and four times," and the Arab shouldn't exceed four.

65.4.6 "...You are forbidden to inherit women against their will, and you should not treat them with harshness, that you may take back part of the Mahr (bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) you have given them..." (V.4:19)

[Machine] And it is mentioned from Ibn Abbas: "Do not oppress them" (referring to women). "Huuban" means sin. "Taa'uloo" means to lean towards or incline. "Nihlatan" refers to the dowry.

regarding the Divine Verse: "O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will, and you should not treat them with harshness that you may take back part of the (Mahr) dower you have given them." (4.19) (Before this revelation) if a man died, his relatives used to have the right to inherit his wife, and one of them could marry her if he would, or they would give her in marriage if they wished, or, if they wished, they would not give her in marriage at all, and they would be more entitled to dispose her, than her own relatives. So the above Verse was revealed in this connection.

65.4.7 "And to everyone, We have appointed heirs of that (property) left by parents and relatives. To those, also, with whom you have made a pledge (brotherhood), give them their due portion [by Wasiya (wills)]. Truly, Allah is Ever a Witness over all things." (V.4:33)

[Machine] "And Ma'mar said: The close allies are the inheritors. He who establishes a bond and is the guardian is the ally, and also the cousin. The ally is the one who bestows favors and frees others. The ally is the one who has been freed. The ally is the king. The ally is a master in religion."

bukhari:4580al-Ṣalt b. Muḥammad > Abū Usāmah > Idrīs > Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās And Likul Jaʿalnā Mawālī

Regarding the Verse: "To everyone, We have appointed heirs." (4.33) 'Mawali' means heirs. And regarding:-- "And those to whom your right hands have pledged." When the Emigrants came to Medina, an Emigrant used to be the heir of an Ansari with the exclusion of the latter's relatives, and that was because of the bond of brotherhood which the Prophet ﷺ had established between them (i.e. the Emigrants and the Ansar). So when the Verses:-- "To everyone We have appointed heirs." was revealed, (the inheritance through bond of brotherhood) was cancelled. Ibn ʿAbbas then said: "And those to whom your right hands have pledged." is concerned with the covenant of helping and advising each other. So allies are no longer to be the heir of each other, but they can bequeath each other some of their property by means of a will.

bukhari:4581Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz > Abū ʿUmar Ḥafṣ b. Maysarah > Zayd b. Aslam > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār > Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī

During the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ some people said, : O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes; do you have any difficulty in seeing the sun at midday when it is bright and there is no cloud in the sky?" They replied, "No." He said, "Do you have any difficulty in seeing the moon on a full moon night when it is bright and there is no cloud in the sky?" They replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "(Similarly) you will have no difficulty in seeing Allah on the Day of Resurrection as you have no difficulty in seeing either of them. On the Day of Resurrection, a call-maker will announce, "Let every nation follow that which they used to worship." Then none of those who used to worship anything other than Allah like idols and other deities but will fall in Hell (Fire), till there will remain none but those who used to worship Allah, both those who were obedient (i.e. good) and those who were disobedient (i.e. bad) and the remaining party of the people of the Scripture. Then the Jews will be called upon and it will be said to them, 'Who do you use to worship?' They will say, 'We used to worship Ezra, the son of Allah.' It will be said to them, 'You are liars, for Allah has never taken anyone as a wife or a son. What do you want now?' They will say, 'O our Lord! We are thirsty, so give us something to drink.' They will be directed and addressed thus, 'Will you drink,' whereupon they will be gathered unto Hell (Fire) which will look like a mirage whose different sides will be destroying each other. Then they will fall into the Fire. Afterwards the Christians will be called upon and it will be said to them, 'Who do you use to worship?' They will say, 'We used to worship Jesus, the son of Allah.' It will be said to them, 'You are liars, for Allah has never taken anyone as a wife or a son,' Then it will be said to them, 'What do you want?' They will say what the former people have said. Then, when there remain (in the gathering) none but those who used to worship Allah (Alone, the real Lord of the Worlds) whether they were obedient or disobedient. Then (Allah) the Lord of the worlds will come to them in a shape nearest to the picture they had in their minds about Him. It will be said, 'What are you waiting for?' Every nation have followed what they used to worship.' They will reply, 'We left the people in the world when we were in great need of them and we did not take them as friends. Now we are waiting for our Lord Whom we used to worship.' Allah will say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say twice or thrice, 'We do not worship any besides Allah.' "

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Recite (of the Qur'an) for me," I said, "Shall I recite it to you although it had been revealed to you?" He said, "I like to hear (the Qur'an) from others." So I recited Surat-an- Nisa' till I reached: "How (will it be) then when We bring from each nation a witness, and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people?" (4.41) Then he said, "Stop!" And behold, his eyes were overflowing with tears."

Jabir said, "The tyrants to whom they resort for judgment in Juhayna are one, and in Aslam are one, and in every neighborhood are one, they are priests upon whom the devil descends." Umar said, "Magic is the devil, and the tyrant is the devil." Ikrimah said, in the language of Abyssinia, "The devil is a sorcerer, and the tyrant is the soothsayer."

The necklace of Asma' was lost, so the Prophet ﷺ sent some men to look for it. The time for the prayer became due and they had not performed ablution and could not find water, so they offered the prayer without ablution. Then Allah revealed (the Verse of Tayammum).

Az-Zubair quarrelled with a man from the Ansar because of a natural mountainous stream at Al-Harra. The Prophet ﷺ said "O Zubair! Irrigate (your lands and the let the water flow to your neighbor The Ansar said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ (This is because) he (Zubair) is your cousin?" At that, the Prophet's face became red (with anger) and he said "O Zubair! Irrigate (your land) and then withhold the water till it fills the land up to the walls and then let it flow to your neighbor." So the Prophet ﷺ enabled Az- Zubair to take his full right after the Ansari provoked his anger. The Prophet ﷺ had previously given a order that was in favor of both of them Az-Zubair said, "I don't think but the Verse was revealed in this connection: "But no, by your Lord, they can have no faith, until they make you judge in all disputes between them." (4.69) And from this I came to know that he has been given the option.

Some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ returned from the battle of Uhud (i.e. refused to fight) whereupon the Muslims got divided into two parties; one of them was in favor of their execution and the other was not in favour of it. So there ware revealed: "Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites?" (4.88). Then the Prophet ﷺ said "It (i.e. Medina) is a Taybah (good), it expels impurities as the fire expels the impurities of silver."

The people of Kufa disagreed (disputed) about the above Verse. So I went to Ibn ʿAbbas and asked him about it. He said, "This Verse:-- "And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell." was revealed last of all (concerning premeditated murder) and nothing abrogated it."

Regarding the Verse: "And say not to anyone who offers you peace (by accepting Islam), You are not a believer." There was a man amidst his sheep. The Muslims pursued him, and he said (to them) "Peace be on you." But they killed him and took over his sheep. Thereupon Allah revealed in that concern, the above Verse up to:-- "...seeking the perishable good of this life." (4.94) i.e. those sheep.

That the Prophet ﷺ dictated to him: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah." Zaid added: Ibn Um Maktum came while the Prophet ﷺ was dictating to me and said, "O Allah's Apostle! By Allah, if I had the power to fight (in Allah's Cause), I would," and he was a blind man. So Allah revealed to his Apostle while his thigh was on my thigh, and his thigh became so heavy that I was afraid it might fracture my thigh. Then that state of the Prophet ﷺ passed and Allah revealed:-- "Except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame etc).

When the Verse:-- "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)" (4.95) was revealed, Allah Apostle called for Zaid who wrote it. In the meantime Ibn Um Maktum came and complained of his blindness, so Allah revealed: "Except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame..." etc.) (4.95)

When the Verse:--"Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)," (4.95) was revealed, the Prophet said, "Call so-and-so." That person came to him with an ink-pot and a wooden board or a shoulder scapula bone. The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Write: 'Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah." Ibn Um Maktum who was sitting behind the Prophet ﷺ then said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I am a blind man." So there was revealed in the place of that Verse, the Verse:--"Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home) except those who are disabled (by injury, or are blind or lame etc.) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah." (4.95)

The people of Medina were forced to prepare an army (to fight against the people of Sham during the caliphate of ʿAbdullah bin Az-Zubair at Mecca), and I was enlisted in it; Then I met ʿIkrima, the freed slave of Ibn ʿAbbas, and informed him (about it), and he forbade me strongly to do so (i.e. to enlist in that army), and then said, "Ibn ʿAbbas informed me that some Muslim people were with the pagans, increasing the number of the pagans against Messenger of Allah ﷺ. An arrow used to be shot which would hit one of them (the Muslims in the company of the pagans) and kill him, or he would be struck and killed (with a sword)." Regarding the Verse:--"They ask your instruction concerning the women. Say: Allah instructs you about them and yet whom you desire to marry." (4.127) (has been revealed regarding the case of) a man who has an orphan girl, and he is her guardian and her heir. The girl shares with him all his property, even a date-palm (garden), but he dislikes to marry her and dislikes to give her in marriage to somebody else who would share with him the property she is sharing with him, and for this reason that guardian prevents that orphan girl from marrying. So, this Verse was revealed: (And Allah's statement:) "If a woman fears cruelty or desertion on her husband's part." (4.128)

Al-Aswad said: I testify the uniqueness of Allah! Allah says: "Verily! The hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire." (4.145) On that ʿAbdullah smiled and Hudhaifa sat somewhere in the Mosque. ʿAbdullah then got up and his companions (sitting around him) dispersed. Hudhaifa then threw a pebble at me (to attract my attention). I went to him and he said, "I was surprised at ʿAbdullah's smile though he understood what I said. The wife of the Prophet ﷺ : We set out with Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys, and when we were at Baida' or at Dhat-al-Jaish, a necklace of mine was broken (and lost). Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed there to look for it, and so did the people along with him. Neither were they at a place of water, nor did they have any water with them. So the people went to Abu Bakr As-Siddiq and said, "Don't you see what ʿAisha has done? She has made Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people, stay where there is no water and they have no water with them." Abu Bakr came while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sleeping with his head on my thigh. He said (to me), "You have detained Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people where there is no water, and they have no water with them." So he admonished me and said what Allah wished him to say, and he hit me on my flanks with his hand. Nothing prevented me from moving (because of pain! but the position of Messenger of Allah ﷺ on my thigh. So Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up when dawn broke and there was no water, so Allah revealed the Verse of Tayammum. Usaid bin Hudair said, "It is not the first blessing of yours, O the family of Abu Bakr." Then we made the camel on which I was riding, got up, and found the necklace under it.

A necklace of mine was lost at Al-Baida' and we were on our way to Medina. The Prophet ﷺ made his camel kneel down and dismounted and laid his head on my lap and slept. Abu Bakr came to me and hit me violently on the chest and said, "You have detained the people because of a necklace." I kept as motionless as a dead person because of the position of Messenger of Allah ﷺ ; (on my lap) although Abu Bakr had hurt me (with the slap). Then the Prophet ﷺ woke up and it was the time for the morning (prayer). Water was sought, but in vain; so the following Verse was revealed:-- "O you who believe! When you intend to offer prayer.." We used to participate in the holy wars carried on by the Prophet ﷺ and we had no women (wives) with us. So we said (to the Prophet ﷺ ). "Shall we castrate ourselves?" But the Prophet ﷺ forbade us to do that and thenceforth he allowed us to marry a woman (temporarily) by giving her even a garment, and then he recited: "O you who believe! Do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you."

(The Verse of) prohibiting alcoholic drinks was revealed when there were in Medina five kinds of (alcoholic) drinks none of which was produced from grapes.

bukhari:4617Yaʿqūb b. Ibrāhīm > Ibn ʿUlayyah > ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ṣuhayb > Anas

We had no alcoholic drink except that which was produced from dates and which you call Fadikh. While I was standing offering drinks to Abu Talh and so-and-so and so-and-so, a man cam and said, "Has the news reached you? They said, "What is that?" He said. "Alcoholic drinks have been prohibited. They said, "Spill (the contents of these pots, O Anas! "Then they neither asked about it (alcoholic drinks) nor returned it after the news from that man.

Some people drank alcoholic beverages in the morning (of the day) of the Uhud battle and on the same day they were killed as martyrs, and that was before wine was prohibited.

I heard ʿUmar while he was on the pulpit of the Prophet ﷺ saying, "Now then O people! The revelation about the prohibition of alcoholic drinks was revealed; and alcoholic drinks are extracted from five things: Grapes, dates, honey, wheat and barley. And the alcoholic drink is that which confuses and stupefies the mind."

The alcoholic drink which was spilled was Al-Fadikh. I used to offer alcoholic drinks to the people at the residence of Abu Talha. Then the order of prohibiting Alcoholic drinks was revealed, and the Prophet ordered somebody to announce that: Abu Talha said to me, "Go out and see what this voice (this announcement ) is." I went out and (on coming back) said, "This is somebody announcing that alcoholic beverages have been prohibited." Abu Talha said to me, "Go and spill it (i.e. the wine)," Then it (alcoholic drinks) was seen flowing through the streets of Medina. At that time the wine was Al-Fadikh. The people said, "Some people (Muslims) were killed (during the battle of Uhud) while wine was in their stomachs." So Allah revealed: "On those who believe and do good deeds there is no blame for what they ate (in the past)." (5.93)

The Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon the like of which I had never heard before. He said, "If you but knew what I know then you would have laughed little and wept much." On hearing that, the companions of the Prophet ﷺ covered their faces and the sound of their weeping was heard. A man said, "Who is my father?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "So-and-so." So this Verse was revealed: "Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble." (5.101)

Bahira is a she-camel whose milk is kept for the idols and nobody is allowed to milk it; Sa'iba was the she-camel which they used to set free for their gods and nothing was allowed to be carried on it. Abu Huraira said: Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I saw ʿAmr bin 'Amir Al-Khuzaʿi (in a dream) dragging his intestines in the Fire, and he was the first person to establish the tradition of setting free the animals (for the sake of their deities)," Wasila is the she-camel which gives birth to a she-camel as its first delivery, and then gives birth to another she-camel as its second delivery. People (in the Pre-lslamic periods of ignorance) used to let that she camel loose for their idols if it gave birth to two she-camels successively without giving birth to a male camel in between. 'Ham' was the male camel which was used for copulation. When it had finished the number of copulations assigned for it, they would let it loose for their idols and excuse it from burdens so that nothing would be carried on it, and they called it the 'Hami.' Abu Huraira said, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying so."

Then (quoting Qur'an) he said:-- "As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it. A promise We have undertaken: Truly we shall do it.." Some men from my followers will be brought and then (the angels) will drive them to the left side (Hell-Fire). I will say. 'O my Lord! (They are) my companions!' Then a reply will come (from Almighty), 'You do not know what they did after you.' I will say as the pious slave (the Prophet ﷺ Jesus) said: And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them. 65.6 Surat al-An’am (Cattle)

[Machine] Ibn Abbas said: "Their trial is their excuse. Ma'arushat, which means what is protected, does not refer to generosity and similar actions. Hamoolah refers to what is carried upon. And we have donned similar clothing, imitating those who are distant. They commit sins, exposing themselves to disgrace. They spread their hands, hitting to harm. You have multiplied and led astray. They have created for Allah a share of their fruits and wealth, and for Satan and the idols a share. Does this include anything other than males or females? So why do you prohibit some and allow others? They have spilled, disregarded. They have gone astray, turned away, and surrendered. Forever, continuously. They have enticed, misled. They doubt, suspect. And as for Qar, it is deafness, and as for Al-Wqr, it signifies pregnancy. As for myths, one of them is a legend or mythical tale. Suffering comes from distress and can lead to despair. Jahrat means observing. The plural form of Sawra is Sura, like saying Surah and Sura. Malakut means sovereignty, and Rahabut is better than Rahamut. And it is said that Rahbut is better than being merciful. Jann is the darkest. "Husban" is said about Allah, meaning His account, and "Husbanan" is said about divine matters. And they are called stoning for the devils, residing in the hardest part of the palm, and entrusted in the womb. Qanwo is the palm ficus, and two of them are called Qanwan. The group of Qanwan is also called Qanwan, like Sino and Sinwan."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The key of the Unseen are five: Verily with Allah (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour He sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Verily, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware." (31.34)
