65.71 Surat Nuh (Noah) (contd …)

[Machine] "AT-WARAN (different stages) Thawr (stage) such and Thawr (stage) such; it is said 'Other than his Thawr (stage)' meaning his capacity. And the elders are stronger than the great ones. And likewise, "beauty" and "beautiful" are more exaggerated because they are more of an exaggeration. 'Kibaarun' (the great ones) is even more so in terms of intensification. And 'Kubaaran' (great ones) is also in the form of moderation. Arabs say 'a man is husaan (handsome) and jamaal (beauty)" and 'Hussaan' is in the form of moderation and 'Jamaal' is also in the form of moderation. "DIYAARAN" (residences) derived from 'DAWR' (round) but it is a verb from 'DAWRAAN' (to rotate) as Umar ibn al-Hayy read it. And it is from "QUMTU" (I stood up). And someone else said "Diaaran" (residence). "TABAARAN" (destruction). And Ibn Abbas said: "MIDRAARAN" (succession one after another). "WAQAARAN" (majesty)."

٦٥۔٧١۔١ باب {وَدًّا وَلاَ سُوَاعًا وَلاَ يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ}

Origin of idol-worship; Names of the idols that were worshipped by the people of Prophet Nūḥ

bukhari:4920Ibrāhīm b. Mūsá > Hishām > Ibn Jurayj > ʿAṭāʾ > Ibn

All the idols which were worshiped by the people of Noah were worshiped by the Arabs later on. As for the idol Wadd, it was worshiped by the tribe of Kalb at Daumat-al-Jandal; Suwaʿ was the idol of (the tribe of) Hudhail; Yaghouth was worshiped by (the tribe of) Murad and then by Bani Ghutaif at Al-Jurf near Saba; Yaʿuq was the idol of Hamdan, and Nasr was the idol of Himyar, the branch of Dhi-al-Kalaʿ.

The names (of the idols) formerly belonged to some pious men of the people of Noah, and when they died Satan inspired their people to (prepare and place idols at the places where they used to sit, and to call those idols by their names. The people did so, but the idols were not worshiped till those people (who initiated them) had died and the origin of the idols had become obscure, whereupon people began worshiping them.
