Zaid. you have been able to acquire a great virtue that you saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ listened to his talk, fought by his side in (different) battles, offered prayer behind me. Zaid, you have in fact earned a great virtue. Zaid, narrate to us what you heard from Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: I have grown old and have almost spent my age and I have forgotten some of the things which I remembered in connection with Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so accept whatever I narrate to you, and which I do not narrate do not compel me to do that.

He then said: One day Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to deliver sermon at a watering place known as Khumm situated between Mecca and Medina. He praised Allah, extolled Him and delivered the sermon and. exhorted (us) and said: Now to our purpose. O people, I am a human being. I am about to receive a messenger (the angel of death) from my Lord and I, in response to Allah's call, (would bid good-bye to you), but I am leaving among you two weighty things: the one being the Book of Allah in which there is right guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah and adhere to it. He exhorted (us) (to hold fast) to the Book of Allah and then said: The second are the members of my household I remind you (of your duties) to the members of my family.

He (Husain) said to Zaid: Who are the members of his household? Aren't his wives the members of his family? Thereupon he said: His wives are the members of his family (but here) the members of his family are those for whom acceptance of Zakat is forbidden. And he said: Who are they? Thereupon he said: 'Ali and the offspring of 'Ali, 'Aqil and the offspring of 'Aqil and the offspring of Ja'far and the offspring of 'Abbas. Husain said: These are those for whom the acceptance of Zakat is forbidden. Zaid said: Yes.

انْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَحُصَيْنُ بْنُ سَبْرَةَ وَعُمَرُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ إِلَى زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ فَلَمَّا جَلَسْنَا إِلَيْهِ قَالَ لَهُ حُصَيْنٌ لَقَدْ لَقِيتَ يَا زَيْدُ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا رَأَيْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَسَمِعْتَ حَدِيثَهُ وَغَزَوْتَ مَعَهُ وَصَلَّيْتَ خَلْفَهُ لَقَدْ لَقِيتَ يَا زَيْدُ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا حَدِّثْنَا يَا زَيْدُ مَا سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ كَبِرَتْ سِنِّي وَقَدُمَ عَهْدِي وَنَسِيتُ بَعْضَ الَّذِي كُنْتُ أَعِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَمَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ فَاقْبَلُوا وَمَا لاَ فَلاَ تُكَلِّفُونِيهِ

ثُمَّ قَالَ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا فِينَا خَطِيبًا بِمَاءٍ يُدْعَى خُمًّا بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَوَعَظَ وَذَكَّرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ أَلاَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ رَسُولُ رَبِّي فَأُجِيبَ وَأَنَا تَارِكٌ فِيكُمْ ثَقَلَيْنِ أَوَّلُهُمَا كِتَابُ اللَّهِ فِيهِ الْهُدَى وَالنُّورُ فَخُذُوا بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَاسْتَمْسِكُوا بِهِ فَحَثَّ عَلَى كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَرَغَّبَ فِيهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَأَهْلُ بَيْتِي أُذَكِّرُكُمُ اللَّهَ فِي أَهْلِ بَيْتِي أُذَكِّرُكُمُ اللَّهَ فِي أَهْلِ بَيْتِي أُذَكِّرُكُمُ اللَّهَ فِي أَهْلِ بَيْتِي

فَقَالَ لَهُ حُصَيْنٌ وَمَنْ أَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ يَا زَيْدُ أَلَيْسَ نِسَاؤُهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ قَالَ نِسَاؤُهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ وَلَكِنْ أَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ مَنْ حُرِمَ الصَّدَقَةَ بَعْدَهُ قَالَ وَمَنْ هُمْ قَالَ هُمْ آلُ عَلِيٍّ وَآلُ عَقِيلٍ وَآلُ جَعْفَرٍ وَآلُ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ كُلُّ هَؤُلاَءِ حُرِمَ الصَّدَقَةَ قَالَ نَعَمْ

We went to him (Zaid b. Arqam) and said to him. You have found goodness (for you had the honour) to live in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and offered prayer behind him, and the rest of the hadith is the same but with this variation of wording that lie said: Behold, for I am leaving amongst you two weighty things, one of which is the Book of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, and that is the rope of Allah. He who holds it fast would be on right guidance and he who abandons it would be in error, and in this (hadith) these words are also found: We said: Who are amongst the members of the household? Aren't the wives (of the Holy Prophet) included amongst the members of his house hold? Thereupon he said: No, by Allah, a woman lives with a man (as his wife) for a certain period; he then divorces her and she goes back to her parents and to her people; the members of his household include his ownself and his kith and kin (who are related to him by blood) and for him the acceptance of Zakat is prohibited.

دَخَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتَ خَيْرًا لَقَدْ صَاحَبْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَصَلَّيْتَ خَلْفَهُ وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ بِنَحْوِ حَدِيثِ أَبِي حَيَّانَ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَلاَ وَإِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمْ ثَقَلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا كِتَابُ اللَّهِ ﷻ هُوَ حَبْلُ اللَّهِ مَنِ اتَّبَعَهُ كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَى وَمَنْ تَرَكَهُ كَانَ عَلَى ضَلاَلَةٍ وَفِيهِ فَقُلْنَا مَنْ أَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ نِسَاؤُهُ قَالَ لاَ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ تَكُونُ مَعَ الرَّجُلِ الْعَصْرَ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ ثُمَّ يُطَلِّقُهَا فَتَرْجِعُ إِلَى أَبِيهَا وَقَوْمِهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ أَصْلُهُ وَعَصَبَتُهُ الَّذِينَ حُرِمُوا الصَّدَقَةَ بَعْدَهُ

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:"Indeed, I am leaving among you, that which if you hold fast to them, you shall not be misguided after me. One of them is greater than the other: The Book of Allah is a rope extended from the sky to the earth, and my family - the people of my house - and they shall not split until they meet at the Hawd, so look at how you deal with them after me."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمْ مَا إِنْ تَمَسَّكْتُمْ بِهِ لَنْ تَضِلُّوا بَعْدِي أَحَدُهُمَا أَعْظَمُ مِنَ الآخَرِ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ حَبْلٌ مَمْدُودٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الأَرْضِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلُ بَيْتِي وَلَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَىَّ الْحَوْضَ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ تَخْلُفُونِي فِيهِمَا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up one day to deliver a sermon. He praised Allah and glorified Him, then he said, "Oh people, indeed I am a human and soon the messenger of my Lord will come to me and I will respond to him. I am leaving behind among you two weighty things, the first of which is the Book of Allah. It contains guidance and light, so hold firmly to the Book of Allah and adhere to it." He emphasized and encouraged the people in this regard. Then he said, "And the people of my household, I remind you of Allah regarding the people of my household three times."

قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا خَطِيبًا فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَأْتِيَنِي رَسُولُ رَبِّي فَأُجِيبَهُ وَإِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ أَوَّلُهُمَا كِتَابُ اللَّهِ فِيهِ الْهُدَى وَالنُّورُ فَتَمَسَّكُوا بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَخُذُوا بِهِ فَحَثَّ عَلَيْهِ وَرَغَّبَ فِيهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «وَأَهْلَ بَيْتِي أُذَكِّرُكُمُ اللَّهَ فِي أَهْلِ بَيْتِي ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ»

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Regret is a form of repentance."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةٌ

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةٌ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Regret is repentance."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةٌ

[AI] Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Regret is repentance?" He said, "Yes."

أَسَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةٌ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, I am leaving among you two weighty things, one of which is greater than the other: the Book of Allah, a rope extended from the heavens to the earth, and my family, my household. Verily, these two will not separate until they meet me at the Pond."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْآخَرِ كِتَابُ اللهِ حَبْلٌ مَمْدُودٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلُ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ

[AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "I am soon to be called and I will respond. I am leaving among you two weighty things, the Book of Allah ﷻ and my family, my household. The Book of Allah is a stretched out rope from the sky to the earth, and my family is my household. And indeed, the All-Loving, the All-Knowing has informed me that they will never separate until they meet me at the pond. So, look at how you will treat them after me."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنِّي أُوشِكُ أَنْ أُدْعَى فَأُجِيبَ وَإِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ كِتَابَ اللهِ ﷻ وَعِتْرَتِي كِتَابُ اللهِ حَبْلٌ مَمْدُودٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلُ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّ اللَّطِيفَ الْخَبِيرَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَاعَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ فَانْظُرُوا بِمَ تَخْلُفُونِي فِيهِمَا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, I have left among you two weighty things: one of them is greater than the other, the Book of Allah, a stretched rope from the sky to the earth, and my family, the people of my household. Verily, they will not separate from each other until they come to me at the Pond."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْآخَرِ كِتَابُ اللهِ ﷻ حَبْلٌ مَمْدُودٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلُ بَيْتِي أَلَا إِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am leaving among you something which, if you adhere to it, you will never go astray after me—two things, one of which is greater than the other: the Book of Allah, a rope stretched from the heavens to the earth, and my progeny, my Ahlul Bayt. They will not separate until they come to me at the pond (of Kawthar)."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمْ مَا إِنْ أَخَذْتُمْ بِهِ لَنْ تَضِلُّوا بَعْدِي الثَّقَلَيْنِ وَأَحَدُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْآخَرِ كِتَابُ اللهِ حَبْلٌ مَمْدُودٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلُ بَيْتِي أَلَا وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "Here I am (at your service), responding to the call for 'umrah and hajj."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَبَّيْكَ بِعُمْرَةٍ وَحَجٍّ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "A person is with the one they love."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الْعَبْدُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ

"I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Woe to the Achilles' tendon because of Hell-fire." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 454)

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ وَيْلٌ لِلْعَرَاقِيبِ مِنَ النَّارِ

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say. . . He then mentioned the tradition to the same effect. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4492)

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ فَذَكَرَهُ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The Khawarij are the dogs of the Hellfire."

[AI] Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Indeed, I am leaving among you the two weighty things?" He said, "Yes."

أَسَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, I am leaving among you two steadfast things: the Book of Allah and my household, my Ahlul-Bayt. They will never separate from each other until they come to me at the Pond (of Al-Kawthar)."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمْ خَلِيفَتَيْنِ كِتَابُ اللهِ حَبْلٌ مَمْدُودٌ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَوْ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلُ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I am leaving among you two weighty things (or precious things): the Book of Allah and my family (or the People of my House). Verily, they will not separate until they come to me at the Pond (in Paradise)."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمْ خَلِيفَتَيْنِ كِتَابُ اللهِ وَأَهْلُ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ جَمِيعًا

I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "A tale-bearer will not enter Jannah." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6056)

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ قَتَّاتٌ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, I have left among you two things that you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah. And they will never separate from each other until they meet me at the Pond."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمْ شَيْئَيْنِ لَنْ تَضِلُّوا بَعْدَهُمَا كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَسُنَّتِي وَلَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ

“I asked Jabir bin ‘Abdullah about hyenas: ‘Are they game (that can be hunted)?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘Can I eat them?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘Is this something that you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ He said: ‘Yes.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3236)

قُلْتُ أَيُؤْكَلُ الضَّبُعُ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ» قُلْتُ أَصَيْدٌ هِيَ؟ قَالَ أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»

[AI] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the Farewell Pilgrimage and camped at Ghadir Khumm, he ordered for a pulpit to be set up. Then he said, 'It seems that I have been called, and I have responded. I have left among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah, the Almighty and my progeny. Look carefully at how you will treat them after me, for they will never separate until they meet me at the Pool.' The narration is abbreviated by Al-Dhahabi."

لَمَّا رَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ وَنَزَلَ غَدِيرَ خُمٍّ أَمَرَ بِدَوْحَاتٍ فَقُمْنَ فَقَالَ كَأَنِّي قَدْ دُعِيتُ فَأَجَبْتُ إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْآخَرِ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَعِتْرَتِي فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ تَخْلُفُونِي فِيهِمَا فَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

[AI] Narrated by him, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am leaving behind among you two weighty things, the Book of Allah and my family, and these two will never be separated until they meet me at the Pond (of Kawthar)."

عَنْه قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ كِتَابَ اللهِ وَأَهْلَ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ

[AI] We were with Abu Hurairah when Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib came to us and greeted us with peace. We returned the greeting, but Abu Hurairah did not notice him. So we said to him, "O Abu Hurairah, Hasan ibn Ali greeted us with peace." He followed him and said, "And peace be upon you, my master." Then he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'He is a master.'"

كُنَّا مَعَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ فَجَاءَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ عَلَيْنَا فَسَلَّمَ فَرَدَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ وَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِهِ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ هَذَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَدْ سَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا فَلَحِقَهُ وَقَالَ وَعَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ يَا سَيِّدِي ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّهُ سَيِّدٌ»

[AI] We were with Ali when Ibn Jurmuz came to seek permission from him. Ali said, "Do you intend to kill the son of Safiyyah to show off?" Grant him permission and give him glad tidings of Hell. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Every prophet has a disciple, and indeed Zubair is my disciple, and the son of my cousin."

كُنَّا عِنْدَ عَلِيٍّ فَجَاءَ ابْنُ جُرْمُوزٍ يَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ أَتَقْتُلُ ابْنَ صَفِيَّةَ تَفَخُّرًا؟ ائْذَنُوا لَهُ وَبِشِّرُوهُ بِالنَّارِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ حَوَارِيٌّ وَإِنَّ الزُّبَيْرَ حَوَارِيَّ وَابْنُ عَمَّتِي»

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Remorse is repentance." He (the person being addressed) said, "Yes."

سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةٌ»؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Regret is repentance." He ﷺ said, "Yes."

أَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةٌ»؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ

“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘The (funeral) prayer should be offered for a child.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1507)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ «مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ إِلَى الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُهُ»

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: One who wrongfully takes an extra tax (sahib maks) will not enter Paradise. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2937)

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ قَاطِعٌ»

[AI] "Narrated by Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri, the Prophet ﷺ said, 'O people, I am leaving behind among you two things, if you hold onto them, you will never go astray after me: the Book of Allah, which is a stretched rope between the heaven and the earth, and my family, the people of my household. Indeed, they will not part ways until they meet me at the Pond of Kawthar.'"

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ؓ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمْ مَا إِنْ أَخَذْتُمْ بِهِ لَنْ تَضِلُّوا بَعْدِي أَمْرَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْآخَرِ كِتَابَ اللهِ حَبَلٌ مَمْدُودٌ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلَ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ

[AI] As if I have been invited and I have answered. Indeed, I am leaving behind among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my family, the people of my household. They will not separate until they come to me at the pond, so look how you deal with them after me.

كَأَنِّي قَدْ دُعِيتُ فَأَجَبْتُ فَإِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّ‍قَلَيْنِ كِتَابَ اللهِ حَبْلٌ مَمْدُودٌ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلَ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ تَخْلُفُونِي فِيهِمَا

[AI] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his pilgrimage on the day of Arafah while he was riding on his camel, Al-Qaswa. He delivered a sermon, and I heard him say, "O people, I am leaving among you that which if you hold onto, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah and my family, the people of my household."

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي حَجَّتِهِ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ وَهُوَ عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ الْقَصْوَاءِ فَخَطَبَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمْ مَا إِنْ أَخَذْتُمْ بِهِ لَنْ تَضِلُّوا كِتَابَ اللهِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلَ بَيْتِي

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, I am leaving a legacy for you, and you will come to me at the Pond (of Kawthar). Its width is like the distance between Sana'a and Busra, and it contains the number of stars in the heavens made from a cup of gold and silver. So, see how you will succeed me in the two weighty matters?" A man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what are the two weighty matters?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The greater one is the Book of Allah, it is a rope that extends between the hand of Allah and your hands, so hold onto it and you will never go astray. And the lesser one is my family, the people of my household, and they will not separate until they meet me at the Pond." I asked for them (the two weighty matters), so do not precede them, lest you be destroyed, and do not teach them, for verily, they are more knowledgeable than you."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنِّي لَكُمْ فَرَطٌ وَإِنَّكُمْ وَارِدُونَ عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ عَرْضُهُ مَا بَيْنَ صَنْعَاءَ إِلَى بُصْرَى فِيهِ عَدَدُ الْكَوَاكِبِ مِنْ قِدْحَانِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ تَخْلُفُونِي فِي الثَّقَلَيْنِ؟» فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَمَا الثَّقَلَانِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الْأَكْبَرُ كِتَابُ اللهِ سَبَبٌ طَرَفُهُ بِيَدِ اللهِ وَطَرَفُهُ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ فَتَمَسَّكُوا بِهِ لَنْ تَزَالُوا وَلَنْ تَضِلُّوا وَالْأَصْغَرُ عِتْرَتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ وَسَأَلْتُ لَهُمَا ذَاكَ رَبِّي فَلَا تَقْدُمُوهُمَا فَتَهْلِكُوا وَلَا تُعَلِّمُوهُمَا؛ فَإِنَّهُمَا أَعْلَمُ مِنْكُمْ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O people, I am a forerunner for you, and I will meet you at the (Heavenly) pool. The pool is wider than the distance between Sana'a and Busra, and it contains as many stars as the number of cups made of silver. I will question you when you come to me about the two weighty matters, so look at how you will succeed in them. The greatest reason is the Book of Allah, one end of which is in the hand of Allah and the other end is in your hands. Hold on to it and do not deviate, and do not change my family, for the Merciful and All-Knowing has told me that they will not separate until they come to me at the pool."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي فَرَطٌ لَكُمْ وَارِدُونَ عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ حَوْضٌ أَعْرَضُ مَا بَيْنَ صَنْعَاءَ وَبُصْرَى فِيهِ عَدَدُ النُّجُومِ قِدْحانٌ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَإِنِّي سَائِلُكُمْ حِينَ تَرِدُونَ عَلَيَّ عَنِ الثَّقَلَيْنِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ تَخْلُفُونِي فِيهِمَا؟ السَّبَبُ الْأَكْبَرُ كِتَابُ اللهِ ﷻ سَبَبٌ طَرَفُهُ بِيَدِ اللهِ وَطَرَفُهُ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ فاسْتَمْسِكُوا بِهِ وَلَا تَضِلُّوا وَلَا تُبَدِّلُوا وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلُ بَيْتِي فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ نَبَّأَنِيَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ أَنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَنْقَضِيَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ»

[AI] About the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , he said: "Verily, I have left among you two caliphs, the Book of Allah and my family. They will not separate until they meet me at the Pond [of Al-Kawthar]."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمْ خَلِيفَتَيْنِ كِتَابَ اللهِ وَأَهْلَ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَمْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ»

[AI] "I have left among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my Progeny. Verily, they will not separate until they return to me at the Pool (of Kawthar)."

«إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمُ الْخَلِيفَتَيْنِ كِتَابَ اللهِ وَعِتْرَتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ»

[AI] The messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, I am leaving two weighty things among you after me, the Book of Allah ﷻ and my family, the people of my household. Verily, they will never separate until they meet me at the pond."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ مِنْ بَعْدِي كِتَابَ اللهِ ﷻ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلَ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ

[AI] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the Farewell Hajj and stayed at Ghadir Khumm, he ordered for a pulpit to be set up. So I stood up and he said, "It is as if I have been called and I have responded. I am leaving behind two weighty things among you, one being greater than the other - the Book of Allah and my progeny, my Ahl al-Bayt. So look how you will treat them after me. Verily, they will never separate until they meet me at the Pond." Then he said, "Verily, Allah is my Mawla (Master) and I am the Mawla (Master) of every believer." Then he took the hand of Ali and said, "Whoever I am his Mawla, Ali is also his Mawla. O Allah, be a supporter to whoever supports him and be an enemy to whoever opposes him." So I said to Zaid, "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "No one was present at that gathering except that he saw it with his own eyes and heard it with his own ears."

لَمَّا رَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ وَنَزَلَ غَدِيرَ خُمٍّ أَمَرَ بِدَوْحَاتٍ فَقُمْتُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَقَالَ «كَأَنِّي قَدْ دُعِيتُ فَأَجَبْتُ إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْآخَرِ كِتَابَ اللهِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلَ بَيْتِي فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ تَخْلُفُونِي فِيهِمَا؟ فَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ مَوْلَاي وَأَنَا وَلِيُّ كُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ» ثُمَّ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ «مَنْ كُنْتُ مَوْلَاهُ فَهَذَا مَوْلَاهُ اللهُمَّ وَالِ مَنْ وَالَاهُ وَعَادِ مَنْ عَادَاهُ» فَقُلْتُ لِزَيْدٍ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَ «مَا كَانَ فِي الدَّوْحَاتِ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا قَدْ رَآهُ بِعَيْنَيْهِ وَسَمِعَهُ بِأُذُنَيْهِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am leaving behind among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my family, the people of my household. Verily, they will never separate until they come to me at the Pond (of Kauthar)."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ كِتَابَ اللهِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلَ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am leaving behind among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my family, my household. They will never separate until they meet me at the Pond."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ كِتَابَ اللهِ وَعِتْرَتِي أَهْلَ بَيْتِي وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am leaving behind among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my family. Look how you will treat them after me." We asked, "Who are the people of his household?" He said, "The family of Ali, the family of Ja'far, the family of Aqil, and the family of Abbas."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ كِتَابَ اللهِ وَعِتْرَتِي فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ تَخْلُفُونِي فِيهِمَا» قُلْنَا وَمَنْ أَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ؟ قَالَ «آلُ عَلِيٍّ وَآلُ جَعْفَرٍ وَآلُ عَقِيلٍ وَآلُ الْعَبَّاسٍ»

[AI] We entered upon him and said, "Indeed, we have seen good in you. You accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and you prayed behind him." He said, "Indeed, I have seen good and I feared that I would be delayed for some evil that has happened to you. So accept [this explanation from] me. And whatever I have kept silent about, then leave it." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in a valley between Mecca and Medina and delivered a sermon to us. He said, "I am a human being soon to be called [by Allah]; I will respond. I am leaving among you two weighty things, one of which is the Book of Allah. It contains the Rope of Allah, whoever holds firmly to it will be guided, and whoever leaves it will be misguided. And [the other weighty thing is] my household. I remind you of Allah concerning my household; I remind you of Allah concerning my household." We said, "Who are the members of your household, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "The women of the household are not included. Rather, the relatives of a man by marriage from the people of all times who then divorces them and they return to their own fathers and mothers, they are the people of my household. And the offsprings of those who were forbidden from receiving charity after me are the family of Ali, Abbas, Jafar, and Aqeel."

دَخَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْنَا لَقَدْ رَأَيْتَ خَيْرًا أَصَحِبْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَصَلَّيْتَ خَلْفَهُ قَالَ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ خَيْرًا وَخَشِيتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ إِنَّمَا أُخِّرْتُ لِشِرٍّ مَا حَدَّثَكُمْ فَاقْبَلُوا وَمَا سَكَتَ عَنْهُ فَدَعُوهُ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِوَادٍ بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ فَخَطَبَنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَنَا بِشْرٌ يُوشِكُ أَنْ أُدْعَى فَأُجِيبَ وَإِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ اثْنَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا كِتَابُ اللهِ فِيهِ حَبَلُ اللهِ مَنِ اتَّبَعَهُ كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَى وَمَنْ تَرَكَهُ كَانَ عَلَى ضَلَالَةٍ وَأَهْلُ بَيْتِي؟ أُذَكِّرُكُمُ اللهَ فِي أَهْلِ بَيْتِي» ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَقُلْنَا مَنْ أَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ نِسَاؤُهُ؟ قَالَ «لَا إِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ قَدْ يَكُونُ يَتَزَوَّجُ بِهَا الرَّجُلُ الْعَصْرَ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ ثُمَّ يُطَلِّقُهَا فَتَرْجِعُ إِلَى أَبِيهَا وَأُمِّهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ أَهْلُهُ وَعَصَبَتُهُ الَّذِينَ حُرِمُوا الصَّدَقَةَ بَعْدَهُ آلُ عَلِيٍّ وَآلُ الْعَبَّاسِ وَآلُ جَعْفَرٍ وَآلُ عَقِيلٍ»

Zaid. you have been able to acquire a great virtue that you saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ listened to his talk, fought by his side in (different) battles, offered prayer behind me. Zaid, you have in fact earned a great virtue. Zaid, narrate to us what you heard from Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: I have grown old and have almost spent my age and I have forgotten some of the things which I remembered in connection with Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so accept whatever I narrate to you, and which I do not narrate do not compel me to do that. He then said: One day Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to deliver sermon at a watering place known as Khumm situated between Mecca and Medina. He praised Allah, extolled Him and delivered the sermon and. exhorted (us) and said: Now to our purpose. O people, I am a human being. I am about to receive a messenger (the angel of death) from my Lord and I, in response to Allah's call, (would bid good-bye to you), but I am leaving among you two weighty things: the one being the Book of Allah in which there is right guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah and adhere to it. He exhorted (us) (to hold fast) to the Book of Allah and then said: The second are the members of my household I remind you (of your duties) to the members of my family. He (Husain) said to Zaid: Who are the members of his household? Aren't his wives the members of his family? Thereupon he said: His wives are the members of his family (but here) the members of his family are those for whom acceptance of Zakat is forbidden. And he said: Who are they? Thereupon he said: 'Ali and the offspring of 'Ali, 'Aqil and the offspring of 'Aqil and the offspring of Ja'far and the offspring of 'Abbas. Husain said: These are those for whom the acceptance of Zakat is forbidden. Zaid said: Yes. (Using translation from Muslim 2408a)

لَهُ حُصَيْنُ بْنُ سَبْرَةَ يَا زَيْدُ رَأَيْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَسَمِعْتَ حَدِيثَهُ وَغَزَوْتَ مَعَهُ لَقَدْ أَصَبْتَ يَا زَيْدُ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا حَدِّثْنَا يَا زَيْدُ مَا شَهِدْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَا سَمِعْتَ قَالَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي وَاللهِ لَقَدْ كَبِرَتْ سِنِّي وَقَدِمَ عَهْدِي وَنَسِيتُ بَعْضَ الَّذِي كُنْتُ أَعِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَمَا أُحَدِّثُكُمْ فَاقْبَلُوهُ وَمَا لَمْ أُحَدِّثْكُمُوهُ فَلَا تُكَلِّفُونِيهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا فِينَا خَطِيبًا بِمَاءٍ يُدْعَى خُمٌّ بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ ﷻ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَوَعَظَ وَذَكَرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَمَّا بَعْدُ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بِشْرٌ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَأْتِنِي رَسُولُ رَبِّي فَأُجِيبَهُ وَإِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا كِتَابُ اللهِ فِيهِ الْهُدَى وَالنُّورُ فَخُذُوا بِكِتَابِ اللهِ وَاسْتَمْسِكُوا بِهِ» فَحَثَّ عَلَى كِتَابِ اللهِ وَرَغَّبَ فِيهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَهْلُ بَيْتِي أُذَكِّرُكُمُ اللهَ فِي أَهْلِ بَيْتِي» قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا قَالَ لَهُ حُصَيْنٌ مَنْ أَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ يَا زَيْدُ أَلَيْسَ نِسَاؤُهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ؟ قَالَ «إِنَّ نِسَاءَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ وَلَكِنَّ أَهْلَ بَيْتِهِ مَنْ حُرِمَ الصَّدَقَةَ بَعْدَهُ» قَالَ وَمَنْ هُمْ؟ قَالَ «هُمْ آلُ عَلِيٍّ وَآلُ جَعْفَرٍ وَآلُ الْعَبَّاسِ وَآلُ عَقِيلٍ» قِيلَ كُلُّ هَؤُلَاءِ حَرَّمَ الصَّدَقَةَ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»
