He said, "When you are pleased with me, you say, 'No, by the Lord of Muhammad,' but when you are angry with me, then you say, 'No, by the Lord of Abraham.' " Thereupon I said, "Yes (you are right), but by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I leave nothing but your name." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5228)

nasai-kubra:9112Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlá > Muḥammad b. Thawr > Maʿmar > al-Zuhrī > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Thawr > Ibn ʿAbbās > Lam Azal Ḥarīṣ Asʾal ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

I was eager to ask 'Umar about the two wives of the Prophet ﷺ concerning whom Allah said, “If you two (wives of the Prophet ﷺ turn in repentance to Allah, (it will be better for you), your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes)” [at-Tahreem 66:4], until 'Umar went for Hajj and I went with him. When we were partway there, 'Umar turned aside and I turned aside with him, bringing the jug. He relieved himself, then he came to me and I poured water onto his hands, and he did wudoo’. I said: “O Ameer al -Mu'mineen, who are the two wives of the Prophet ﷺ of whom Allah said: ‘If you two (wives of the Prophet ﷺ) turn in repentance to Allah, (it will be better for you), your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes)’?” [at-Tahreem 66:4] 'Umar said, “How strange of you, O Ibn 'Abbas”, (az-Zuhri said: By Allah, he did not like the question, but he did not conceal anything.) He said, “They were Hafsah and 'A'ishah.” Then he started to narrate the hadeeth and said: We people of Quraish were a people who dominated women, but when we came to Madinah we found a people who were dominated by their women, and our women started to learn from their women. My house was among Banu Umayyah bin Zaid in al-'Awali. One day I got angry with my wife, and she argued with me. I did not like her to argue with me, but she said: Do you not like me to argue with you? By Allah, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ argue with him, and one of them will forsake him all day until night comes, I went and entered upon Hafsah, and I said: Do you argue with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? She said: Yes. I said: Does one of you forsake him all day until night comes? She said: Yes. I said: Any one of you who does that is doomed and lost. Does any one of you feel assured that Allah will not be angry with her because of the anger of His Messenger ﷺ, for then she will be doomed? Do not argue with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do not ask him for anything. Ask me for whatever you want. And do not be misled by the fact that your neighbour is more beautiful than you and more beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than you – referring to 'A'ishah. And ‘Umar said: I had a neighbour among the Ansar. We used to take turns to go down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He would go down one day and I would go down the next. He would bring me the news of the Revelation and other things, and I would do likewise. We were saying that Ghassan were shoeing their horses to attack us. My friend went down, then he came to me at night and knocked on my door, then he called out to me. I went out to him and he said: Something terrible has happened! I said: What? Have Ghassan come? He said: No, it is more terrible than that and worse. The Prophet ﷺ has divorced his wives! I said: Hafsah is doomed and lost! I thought that this would happen. Then when I had prayed Fajr, I got dressed, then I went down and entered upon Hafsah, who was weeping. I said: Has the Messenger of Allah ﷺdivorced you? She said: I do not know. He has secluded himself in this loft. I went to a black slave of his and said: Ask for permission for ‘Umar to enter. He went in, then he came out to me and said: I mentioned you to him but he did not say anything, I went away and came to the minbar, where I sat down. By it was a group of people, some of whom were weeping. I sat for a little while, then I could not bear it any longer, so I went to the slave and said: Ask for permission for ‘Umar to enter. He went in, then he came out to me and said: I mentioned you to him but he did not say anything. I turned to leave, then the slave called me and said: Go in, he has given you permission. So I went in and greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with salam. He was resting on a reed mat that had left marks on his side. I said: O Messenger of Allah, have you divorced your wives? He looked up at me and said, “No.” I said: Allah Akbar! if you had seen us, O Messenger of Allah, we Quraish were a people who dominated women, but when we came to Madinah we found a people who were dominated by their women, and our women started to learn from their women. I got angry with my wife one day, and she started to argue with me. I did not like her to argue with me, but she said: Do you not like me to argue with you? By Allah, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ argue with him, and one of them will forsake him all day until night comes. I said: Any one of them who does that is doomed and lost. Does one of them feel assured that Allah will not be angry with her because of the anger of His Messenger ﷺ,then she will be doomed? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I entered upon Hafsah and I said: Do not be misled by the fact that your neighbour (i.e. ‘Aa'ishah) is more beautiful than you and more beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled again. I said: O Messenger of Allah, may I speak to you freely? He said: “Yes.” So I sat down and looked around the room, and by Allah, I did not see anything in it to please the eye except three hides. I said: Pray to Allah, O Messenger of Allah, to make life prosperous for your ummah, for He has made life prosperous for the Persians and Romans, but they do not worship Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. He sat up straight and said: “Are you doubting. O son of al-Khattab? They are people whose good things have been hastened for them in this world.” I said: Pray for forgiveness for me, O Messenger of Allah. He had sworn that he would not enter upon them for a month, because he was so annoyed with them until Allah rebuked him. (Using translation from Aḥmad 222)

The Prophet ﷺ took an oath that he would not enter upon some of his wives for one month. But when twenty nine days had elapsed, he went to them in the morning or evening. It was said to him, "O Allah's Prophet! You had taken an oath that you would not enter upon them for one month." He replied, "The month can be of twenty nine days." The Apostle of Allah ﷺ separated himself from his wives for a month. (His wives said: ) He came to us on the morning of the twenty-ninth. Upon this some, of the people said: It is the morning of twenty- ninth (according to our calculation). Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The month. may also consist of twenty-nine days. The Apostle of Allah ﷺ then flapped his bands thrice, twice with all the fingers of both his hand (to indicate twenty-nine) and by the third time with nine (fingers). [Machine] Safiyyah was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and it was her day (i.e., her turn to travel with him). So, I walked slowly, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met her while she was crying and saying, "You made me ride a slow camel." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped her eyes with his hands and silenced her, but she refused to stop crying. This angered the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he left her and went ahead. Then Aisha came and said, "Today is your day with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If you are satisfied with what he has done to me, then perform ablution." Aisha then went to her veil, which was dyed with a yellow color and saffron, and splashed it with some water. Then she came and sat next to the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "What is the matter?" She replied, "This is the virtue that Allah gives to whomever He wills." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ understood the conversation and was pleased with Safiyyah. He then went to Zainab and said to her, "Safiyyah's camel tired her. What if you give her your camel?" Zainab said, "Are you suggesting that I give my camel to a Jewess?" So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ migrated from her for three months, during which time he did not approach her house. Zainab neglected herself, neglected her house, and leaned on the bed, believing that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not come to her. But one day, while she was still in this state, she suddenly saw the figure of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entering the house and placing the bed back in its place. Then Zainab said, "O Messenger of Allah, my neighbor Fulanah has purified herself from her menstrual period today, so she is for you." So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to her, and he was pleased with her.

Sulaiman bin Amr bin Ahwas said: “My father told me that he was present at the Farewell Pilgrimage with the Messenger of Allah. He praised and glorified Allah, and reminded and exhorted (the people). Then he said: 'I enjoin good treatment of women, for they are prisoners with you, and you have no right to treat them otherwise, unless they commit clear indecency. If they do that, then forsake them in their beds and hit them, but without causing injury or leaving a mark. If they obey you, then do not seek means of annoyance against them. You have rights over your women and your women have rights over you. Your rights over your women are that they are not to allow anyone whom you dislike to tread on your bedding (furniture), nor allow anyone whom you dislike to enter your houses. And their right over you are that you should treat them kindly with regard to their clothing and food.' ” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1851)

When Az-Zubair married me, he had no real property or any slave or anything else except a camel which drew water from the well, and his horse. I used to feed his horse with fodder and drew water and sew the bucket for drawing it, and prepare the dough, but I did not know how to bake bread. So our Ansari neighbors used to bake bread for me, and they were honorable ladies. I used to carry the date stones on my head from Zubair's land given to him by Messenger of Allah ﷺ and this land was two third Farsakh (about two miles) from my house. One day, while I was coming with the date stones on my head, I met Messenger of Allah ﷺ along with some Ansari people. He called me and then, (directing his camel to kneel down) said, "Ikh! Ikh!" so as to make me ride behind him (on his camel). I felt shy to travel with the men and remembered Az-Zubair and his sense of Ghira, as he was one of those people who had the greatest sense of Ghira. Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed that I felt shy, so he proceeded. I came to Az-Zubair and said, "I met Messenger of Allah ﷺ while I was carrying a load of date stones on my head, and he had some companions with him. He made his camel kneel down so that I might ride, but I felt shy in his presence and remembered your sense of Ghira (See the glossary). On that Az-Zubair said, "By Allah, your carrying the date stones (and you being seen by the Prophet ﷺ in such a state) is more shameful to me than your riding with him." (I continued serving in this way) till Abu Bakr sent me a servant to look after the horse, whereupon I felt as if he had set me free. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5224)

She went to the Prophet ﷺ to request a servant but did not find him there. When he returned, she had already left. When she later informed him about it, he came to us, and we had already gone to bed. We had a thin curtain over us, and when we wore it long, our feet would protrude, but when we wore it sideways, our heads or feet would be exposed.

The Prophet ﷺ asked Fatimah, "Were you the one who came earlier with a need?" She replied, "Yes, I complained to you about the marks on my hands from grinding flour, and you suggested I ask for a servant." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Shall I guide you to something better than having a servant? When you go to bed, say subḥān Allāh (Glory be to Allah) thirty-three times, al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times, and Allāhu akbar (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-four times."
