[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me the Quran." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite three verses from Surah Al-Ra'ad." The man said, "I am old, my tongue is heavy, and my heart is hard." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite three verses from Surah Al-Hamd." The man said, "It is the same for me, but please teach me a comprehensive Surah, O Messenger of Allah." So the Prophet ﷺ recited to him the verse, 'When the earth is shaken...' until 'good or evil, shall see it.' The man said, "By the One who has sent you with the truth, I do not care to add to it until I meet Allah, but tell me what good deeds I should do." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perform the five daily prayers, observe fasting in Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, give Zakat from your wealth, enjoin good and forbid evil."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to Makkah in the year of the conquest during the month of Ramadan until he reached the Kura'al-Ghamim. It was said to him, "The people are fasting even though they are on foot or riding." They told him, "The people find it difficult to fast, they are just watching what you do." So he called for a cup and lifted it up towards his mouth so the people could see, and then he drank from it. Some people broke their fast and others continued to fast. The Prophet ﷺ was told, "Some of them are still fasting." He said, "Those are the disobedient ones." Then the people who were on foot from his companions gathered and said, "We are exposed to the supplications of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the journey has become difficult and the hardship has increased." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "Seek help through taking off your shoes, as it cuts off the mark from the earth and you will remain hidden for him." They did as he advised and lightened the burden for him.

He replied, "There were some women in my house who said that they do not recite the Quran, so can we pray with your prayer (meaning, should I lead them in prayer)?" The Prophet said, "I prayed eight units of prayer with them, and then I performed Witr." The Prophet said, "It was almost similar to being satisfied (i.e., it was almost equivalent to the reward of performing Tahajjud), and he did not say anything more."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us that on that day, the sun rises without any rays.
[Machine] Tell me, for it pleases me to see you, and I have come only to meet you. So tell me about the Night of Qadr, as Ibn Mas'ud says: "Whoever stands (in prayer) during the whole year will be affected by it or will attain it." He knew that it is in the month of Ramadan, but he preferred not to specify it for you. It is the twenty-seventh night, according to the verse that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us about. So we memorized it and recognized it. It was a clear night until the last moments before dawn. He would ascend the minaret, look at the rising of the sun, and say, "It rises without any rays until it rises high."
[Machine] "Tell me, for I used to love meeting you, and I did not come except to meet you. So tell me about the Night of Decree, for Ibn Mas'ud says, 'Whoever establishes the Sunnah will be touched by it or will attain it.' Ubayy said, 'He knew that it was in Ramadan, but he loved to blind you. Verily, it is the twenty-seventh night, according to the verse narrated to us by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We memorized it and learned it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to continue it until dawn, when it was a day before it and a day after it. He would look at the sun and say, "Indeed, it rises without its rays until it rises."
[Machine] Umm Sulaym went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Abu Talhah and his son have performed Hajj, and they left me behind." The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Umm Sulaym, performing 'Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to performing Hajj."
[Machine] Umm Sulaim came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Talha and his son performed Hajj, leaving me behind." He replied, "O Umm Sulaim, performing Umrah during Ramadan is equivalent to performing Hajj."
[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him that he had committed adultery with his wife during Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah asked him, "Can you find a slave to free?" The man replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah asked, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" The man replied, "I cannot find." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him dates and instructed him to give them in charity. The man then mentioned his need to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he instructed him to take the dates for himself.

[Machine] From Thawban, the servant of the Messenger of Allahﷺ he said that he went out with the Messenger of Allahﷺ for eighteen nights of Ramadan to Al-Baqi' (graveyard in Madinah). The Messenger of Allahﷺ looked at a man who was applying hijamah (cupping therapy), so the Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "The one who performs hijamah and the one who gets it done both break their fast."
[Machine] Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, narrated: I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for eighteen nights in the month of Ramadan, and then we came across a man getting his hair shaved in Al-Baqi'. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The one who gets his hair shaved and the one who gets his hair trimmed have broken their fast." And likewise...

"We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah. Some of us were fasting and some of us broke their fast. The one who broke their fast had no objection to the one who fasted, and the one who fasted had no objection to the one who broke his fast. They saw that whoever had the strength to fast then that was good, and whoever was weak, then breaking it was better." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 713)
We went out on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during Ramadan. Some of us observed the fast and some of us broke it. Neither the observer of the fast had any grudge against one who broke it, nor the breaker of the fast had any grudge against one who had fasted They knew that he who had strength enough (to bear its rigour) fasted and that was good, and they also found that he who felt weakness (and could not bear the burden) broke it, and that was also good. (Using translation from Muslim 1116d)

[Machine] I heard my father, who had lived during the time of ignorance and embraced Islam, say, "I set traps with nets for hares, and one of them fell into my trap. It escaped, and I followed it until I found a man who had taken hold of it. We disputed over it until we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . We found him sitting among the nets, under a tree seeking shade, and we presented our case to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled between us and divided the hare into two parts. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we will encounter some camels with sore backs and they are in need.' He said, 'Call the owner of the camels three times; if he comes, give them to him, and if not, untie them and let them drink water, then tie them and leave the milk for their young.' I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, should we expect a reward if we give them water?' He replied, 'Yes, in every living creature with a liver, there is a reward.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ started talking to us and said, 'A time will come upon people when the best wealth they will have is sheep grazing between the two mosques, eating from the trees and drinking from their containers. The shepherd will consume the milk and wear clothes made from their wool.' He may have said, 'from their hair.' And trials will arise, spreading like the traces of a camel's hoof amongst the Arabs, and by Allah.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, advise me.' He said, 'Perform the prayer, pay the Zakah, observe fasting during Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House, perform Umrah, be dutiful to your parents, maintain ties of kinship, receive guests, enjoin what is good, forbid what is evil, and follow the truth wherever it leads you.'"

[Machine] Khuzayah were allies of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and Bani Bakr were a faction from the tribe of Kinanah, allies of Abu Sufyan. There was a period of reconciliation between them during the time of Hudaybiyyah. However, the Bani Bakr tribe became jealous of the Khuzayah tribe during that period and thus sent a message to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his support. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sent a representative to assist them during the month of Ramadan. He fasted until he reached Qudayd, and then he broke his fast. He said, "Let the people fast during travel and break their fast. Whoever fasts, his fast is valid, but whoever breaks his fast must make up for it." Allah then granted victory to the Muslims in Makkah, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the city, he leaned his back against the Ka'bah and said, "Disarm except for Khuzayah on behalf of Bani Bakr." A man came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, a man has been killed in a sacred area (Muzdalifah)." He replied, "This place is sacred according to Allah's decree. It was not permissible for anyone who came before me, and it will not be permissible for anyone who comes after me. It was only permissible for me for an hour. It is not permissible for a Muslim to bear arms in it, raise his voice, disturb wild animals, or cut a tree." A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, except for the Ithkhar stone? It is part of our houses and graves." He replied, "Except for the Ithkhar stone. The most hostile people to Allah are three: the one who kills in the sacred area, the one who kills without any just cause, and the one who kills to perpetuate the practices of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance." A man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have slept with a woman from the tribe of so-and-so and she has given birth to a child. Can I take my child back?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Your child is not permissible for you. This is not permissible in Islam. The accused is entitled to a chance to prove her innocence by producing evidence that the child belongs to the owner of the marriage bed. The adulteress should be stoned to death. A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is 'Al-Athlib'?" He replied, "It is the stone. Whoever commits adultery with a woman who is not lawful for him, or with a woman from another tribe, and she gives birth, the child is not his and he does not inherit from him, nor is he inherited from. The believers are equal in their blood, they reciprocate and support one another. The first of them defends the last and the last defends the first. A believer shall not be killed for an unbeliever or for someone on a treaty. Two people from different religions cannot inherit from one another. A woman cannot be married to her paternal or maternal aunt, and she cannot travel without a Mahram. Do not pray after Fajr until the sun rises, and do not pray after Asr until the sun sets."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ encouraged them to stand in prayer during the month of Ramadan without imposing it on them. He said, "Whoever stands in prayer during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, and this practice continued during the caliphates of Abu Bakr, Umar, and thereafter.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out in the middle of the night and prayed in the mosque. The people followed him and prayed as well. In the morning, people were talking about it, so more people came the next night and the Messenger of Allah went out and prayed, and the people prayed with him. This continued for the third night, and the people talked about it so much that the mosque became crowded and unable to accommodate everyone. The Messenger of Allah did not come out to them anymore, so the people became upset and said that they missed the prayer. He then came out for the Fajr prayer and after finishing it, he faced the people and testified to the correctness of their intentions. He said, "What prevented me from coming out to you was my fear that the night prayer would become obligatory for you, and you would have difficulty fulfilling it." He always encouraged them to observe the nights of Ramadan without explicitly commanding them to do so. He used to say, "Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Decree) out of faith and seeking reward, Allah will forgive his previous sins." The Messenger of Allah passed away while this tradition was still practiced during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and the early years of Umar's caliphate. Umar eventually gathered the people behind a single reciter during the month of Ramadan, and this was the first time people congregated for one reciter during Ramadan.

The number of people increased on the third night and the Messenger of Allah went out to pray and they prayed with him. Some of the men said that they should pray and the Messenger of Allah did not come out to them until he came out for the morning prayer. After completing the Fajr prayer, he turned to the people and said, "Indeed, your matter did not escape me tonight, but I feared that it would be imposed upon you and you would be unable to fulfill it." The Messenger of Allah used to encourage them to observe the night prayers in Ramadan without explicitly commanding them to do so. He used to say, "Whoever observes Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven for him." The Messenger of Allah passed away and this continued to be the practice during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and the beginning of the caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab. Uruwah reported, and Abdur Rahman ibn Abdir Rahim, who used to work with Umar, reported that Umar went out one night during Ramadan and Abdur Rahman went out with him. They walked around the mosque and the people were praying individually, and some were praying in groups. Umar said, "By Allah, I think if we gather them behind one reciter, it would be better than what they are doing." Umar decided to gather them behind one reciter and commanded Ubayy ibn Ka'b to lead them in prayer during Ramadan. Umar went out with the people and they prayed behind the reciter, and Abdur Rahman ibn Abdir Rahim was with him. Umar said, "What an excellent innovation this is, and the one who neglects it is better than the one who stays up till the end of the night." The people used to pray in the early part of the night.

[Machine] Abu Salih al-Harrani narrated in the year 320 that Hayyan ibn Ubaydullah ibn Zuhayr al-Misri, Abu Zuhayr, had been narrating for sixty years. He said, "I asked Dahhak ibn Mazahim about the saying of Allah: {No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy}, {Indeed, We [i.e., God] used to hold that what you [i.e., humans] used to do} and {Indeed, We [i.e., God] created everything in proportion}. He [i.e., Dahhak] said, "Ibn Abbas said, 'Indeed, Allah created the Throne and then settled upon it, and then He created the Pen and commanded it to write by His command. He magnified the Pen from that which is between the heavens and the earth. So, the Pen said, 'O Lord, in what shall I write?' He said, 'Write what I have created, and it is the work, sustenance, and lifespan.' So, the Pen flowed with what it is ordained until the Day of Resurrection. Then, Allah made it firm in the Guarded Tablet beneath the Throne. As for His saying, {Indeed, We used to transcribe what you used to do}, indeed, Allah has assigned angels to transcribe everything from that book each year on the Night of Decree in Ramadan. They transcribe everything that will happen in the following year on earth, and this contradicts the guardianship established by Allah over His servants each Thursday night. They find what the guardianship has raised to be in accordance with what is written in their book. This has no increase or decrease. As for His saying, {Indeed, We created everything according to a measure}, indeed, Allah has created everything in its appropriate measure regarding its creation and provision. He created the camel in a way that nothing is suitable for it from other creatures, and likewise with everything from His creation. He created provisions for the land animals and birds that are suitable for them on land, and He created provisions for the sea creatures and birds that are suitable for them in the sea. That is the meaning of His saying, {Indeed, We created everything according to a measure}."

[Machine] "Yes, we used to fast it with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before the month of Ramadan was prescribed. But when the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it was abrogated." Then he said, "Sit down," so I sat down and ate."
[Machine] Abdullah said, "Verily, it is a day that we used to fast before Ramadan."
[Machine] Feed, for this is a day that used to be fasted before Ramadan came down. Then Ramadan came, so this day was abandoned.
