#ramadan Month of Ramaḍān (34)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to Makkah in the year of the conquest during the month of Ramadan until he reached the Kura'al-Ghamim. It was said to him, "The people are fasting even though they are on foot or riding." They told him, "The people find it difficult to fast, they are just watching what you do." So he called for a cup and lifted it up towards his mouth so the people could see, and then he drank from it. Some people broke their fast and others continued to fast. The Prophet ﷺ was told, "Some of them are still fasting." He said, "Those are the disobedient ones." Then the people who were on foot from his companions gathered and said, "We are exposed to the supplications of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the journey has become difficult and the hardship has increased." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "Seek help through taking off your shoes, as it cuts off the mark from the earth and you will remain hidden for him." They did as he advised and lightened the burden for him.

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me the Quran." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite three verses from Surah Al-Ra'ad." The man said, "I am old, my tongue is heavy, and my heart is hard." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite three verses from Surah Al-Hamd." The man said, "It is the same for me, but please teach me a comprehensive Surah, O Messenger of Allah." So the Prophet ﷺ recited to him the verse, 'When the earth is shaken...' until 'good or evil, shall see it.' The man said, "By the One who has sent you with the truth, I do not care to add to it until I meet Allah, but tell me what good deeds I should do." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perform the five daily prayers, observe fasting in Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, give Zakat from your wealth, enjoin good and forbid evil."

[Machine] Tell me, for it pleases me to see you, and I have come only to meet you. So tell me about the Night of Qadr, as Ibn Mas'ud says: "Whoever stands (in prayer) during the whole year will be affected by it or will attain it." He knew that it is in the month of Ramadan, but he preferred not to specify it for you. It is the twenty-seventh night, according to the verse that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us about. So we memorized it and recognized it. It was a clear night until the last moments before dawn. He would ascend the minaret, look at the rising of the sun, and say, "It rises without any rays until it rises high."

[Machine] I heard my father, who had lived during the time of ignorance and embraced Islam, say, "I set traps with nets for hares, and one of them fell into my trap. It escaped, and I followed it until I found a man who had taken hold of it. We disputed over it until we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . We found him sitting among the nets, under a tree seeking shade, and we presented our case to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled between us and divided the hare into two parts. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we will encounter some camels with sore backs and they are in need.' He said, 'Call the owner of the camels three times; if he comes, give them to him, and if not, untie them and let them drink water, then tie them and leave the milk for their young.' I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, should we expect a reward if we give them water?' He replied, 'Yes, in every living creature with a liver, there is a reward.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ started talking to us and said, 'A time will come upon people when the best wealth they will have is sheep grazing between the two mosques, eating from the trees and drinking from their containers. The shepherd will consume the milk and wear clothes made from their wool.' He may have said, 'from their hair.' And trials will arise, spreading like the traces of a camel's hoof amongst the Arabs, and by Allah.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, advise me.' He said, 'Perform the prayer, pay the Zakah, observe fasting during Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House, perform Umrah, be dutiful to your parents, maintain ties of kinship, receive guests, enjoin what is good, forbid what is evil, and follow the truth wherever it leads you.'"

[Machine] Khuzayah were allies of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and Bani Bakr were a faction from the tribe of Kinanah, allies of Abu Sufyan. There was a period of reconciliation between them during the time of Hudaybiyyah. However, the Bani Bakr tribe became jealous of the Khuzayah tribe during that period and thus sent a message to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his support. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sent a representative to assist them during the month of Ramadan. He fasted until he reached Qudayd, and then he broke his fast. He said, "Let the people fast during travel and break their fast. Whoever fasts, his fast is valid, but whoever breaks his fast must make up for it." Allah then granted victory to the Muslims in Makkah, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the city, he leaned his back against the Ka'bah and said, "Disarm except for Khuzayah on behalf of Bani Bakr." A man came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, a man has been killed in a sacred area (Muzdalifah)." He replied, "This place is sacred according to Allah's decree. It was not permissible for anyone who came before me, and it will not be permissible for anyone who comes after me. It was only permissible for me for an hour. It is not permissible for a Muslim to bear arms in it, raise his voice, disturb wild animals, or cut a tree." A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, except for the Ithkhar stone? It is part of our houses and graves." He replied, "Except for the Ithkhar stone. The most hostile people to Allah are three: the one who kills in the sacred area, the one who kills without any just cause, and the one who kills to perpetuate the practices of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance." A man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have slept with a woman from the tribe of so-and-so and she has given birth to a child. Can I take my child back?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Your child is not permissible for you. This is not permissible in Islam. The accused is entitled to a chance to prove her innocence by producing evidence that the child belongs to the owner of the marriage bed. The adulteress should be stoned to death. A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is 'Al-Athlib'?" He replied, "It is the stone. Whoever commits adultery with a woman who is not lawful for him, or with a woman from another tribe, and she gives birth, the child is not his and he does not inherit from him, nor is he inherited from. The believers are equal in their blood, they reciprocate and support one another. The first of them defends the last and the last defends the first. A believer shall not be killed for an unbeliever or for someone on a treaty. Two people from different religions cannot inherit from one another. The Messenger of Allah passed away while this tradition was still practiced during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and the early years of Umar's caliphate. Umar eventually gathered the people behind a single reciter during the month of Ramadan, and this was the first time people congregated for one reciter during Ramadan.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one night in Ramadan and prayed in the mosque. Some men prayed behind him. The people spoke about it and more of them gathered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out again and they prayed behind him. The people talked about it again. The people of the mosque gathered on the third night. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and they prayed behind him. On the fourth night, the mosque was crowded, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not go out to them except for the Fajr prayer. After the Fajr prayer, he faced the people and made the testimony of faith, then he said, "It was not hidden from me your presence, but I feared that it would be made obligatory upon you, and you would be unable to fulfill it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ encouraged them to stand in prayer during the month of Ramadan without imposing it on them. He said, "Whoever stands in prayer during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, and this practice continued during the caliphates of Abu Bakr, Umar, and thereafter.

[Machine] The Prophet's wife informed him that the Messenger of Allah went out one night in the middle of the night to pray in the mosque. Some men prayed with him and the people spoke about it. More people gathered the next night and the Messenger of Allah went out to pray and they prayed with him. The number of people increased on the third night and the Messenger of Allah went out to pray and they prayed with him. However, on the fourth night, the mosque was unable to accommodate its people and the Messenger of Allah did not come out to them. Some of the men said that they should pray and the Messenger of Allah did not come out to them until he came out for the morning prayer. After completing the Fajr prayer, he turned to the people and said, "Indeed, your matter did not escape me tonight, but I feared that it would be imposed upon you and you would be unable to fulfill it." The Messenger of Allah used to encourage them to observe the night prayers in Ramadan without explicitly commanding them to do so. He used to say, "Whoever observes Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven for him." The Messenger of Allah passed away and this continued to be the practice during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and the beginning of the caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab. Uruwah reported, and Abdur Rahman ibn Abdir Rahim, who used to work with Umar, reported that Umar went out one night during Ramadan and Abdur Rahman went out with him. They walked around the mosque and the people were praying individually, and some were praying in groups. Umar said, "By Allah, I think if we gather them behind one reciter, it would be better than what they are doing." Umar decided to gather them behind one reciter and commanded Ubayy ibn Ka'b to lead them in prayer during Ramadan. Umar went out with the people and they prayed behind the reciter, and Abdur Rahman ibn Abdir Rahim was with him. Umar said, "What an excellent innovation this is, and the one who neglects it is better than the one who stays up till the end of the night." The people used to pray in the early part of the night.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to spend the middle ten days of Ramadan in retirement and devotion (i'tikaf) in the mosque. One year he had retirement and devotion in the mosque (as usual); when the twenty-first night came, and this night when he used to come out his devotion in the mosque, he said: He who has engaged himself in devotion along with me should do so during the last ten days; I saw that night, that was caused to forget it, but I have seen myself prostrating in water and mud on the morning following (that night), so seek it in the last ten days and seek it every night with an odd number. Abu sa'id said: Rain fell that night, the mosque that was thatched building dripped, and my eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the traces of water and mud, on his forehead on the morning following the twenty-first night. Then another king was appointed after him, and he ate meat and became sick. He said, "If God heals me, I will add eight more days of fasting." Then another king was appointed after him, and he said, "We will not abandon these days but will complete them and observe our fasting in the spring." So he did, and it became fifty days.
