7. Book of Heart Softeners (1/9)
[Machine] On the authority of Jundub ibn Abdullah, who narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Read the Quran as long as your hearts are in agreement with it. But if you disagree regarding its interpretation, then step away from it."
[Machine] It is narrated that the Prophet ﷺ passed by Abu Bakr while he was praying, and he lowered his voice. He also passed by Umar while he was praying, and he raised his voice. When they both came to the Prophet ﷺ , he said to Abu Bakr, "O Abu Bakr, I passed by you while you were praying and you were lowering your voice." Abu Bakr replied, "I have heard those whom I was whispering to." The Prophet ﷺ then said to Umar, "And I passed by you, O Umar, while you were raising your voice." Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was waking up the sleepers and encouraging them." The Prophet ﷺ then said to Abu Bakr, "Raise your voice a little." He also said to Umar, "Lower your voice a little."
The Prophet ﷺ said: One who recites the Qur'an in a loud voice is like one who gives alms openly; and one who recites the Qur'an quietly is one who gives alms secretly. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1333)
[Machine] "To me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Recite upon me.' I said, 'Shall I recite upon you even though the Quran was revealed to you?' He said, 'Indeed, I love to hear it from someone other than myself.'"
[Machine] "I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, 'Recite the Quran from four people - Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa, Mu'adh ibn Jabal, and Ubay ibn Ka'b.'"
[Machine] "A man recited a verse, and I recited it in a different way. So I asked him, 'Who taught you this?' He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited it to me.' I then went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, did you recite this verse to me, such and such?' He replied, 'Yes.' The man asked, 'Did you recite it to me, such and such?' He said, 'Yes, indeed. Gabriel and Michael came to me. Gabriel sat on my right and Michael on my left. Gabriel said, 'O Muhammad, recite the Quran with precision.' Michael said, 'Increase in it.' So I said, 'Give me more.' He said, 'Recite it with two letters.' Michael then said, 'Increase in it, until it reached seven letters.' And he said, 'Recite it with seven letters, each one is distinct and clear.'"
[Machine] That Gabriel ﷺ came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was with the Abbasids and said, "O Muhammad, indeed Allah commands you to recite this Quran to your Ummah on one letter." So the Prophet ﷺ said, "I ask Allah for His forgiveness and mercy, or His assistance and mercy. Ask Him for them to be relieved, as they will not be able to bear that." Then Gabriel left and came back again, saying, "Indeed, Allah commands you to recite this Quran to your Ummah on two letters." The Prophet ﷺ responded with the same answer. Then Gabriel left and returned once more, saying, "Indeed, Allah commands you to recite this Quran to your Ummah on three letters." And the Prophet ﷺ gave the same response. Then Gabriel left and returned again, saying, "Indeed, Allah commands you to recite this Quran to your Ummah on seven letters. Whoever recites a letter from it, they will receive the reward of reciting it."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met Gabriel ﷺ , and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "I have been sent to a nation from which there are young boys, young girls, elderly men, and dying old men." Gabriel ﷺ said, "Command them to recite the Quran with seven letters."

[Machine] "I was sitting in the mosque when a man entered and recited a verse that I disliked. Then another man entered and recited a different verse than his companion. After completing the prayer, they both went to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this man recited a verse that I disliked, and the other one recited a different verse than his companion.' The Prophet ﷺ told them, 'Recite.' So they recited, and he said, 'You both did well, or he said, 'You both did correctly.' When the one whom the Prophet ﷺ had spoken to heard this, he felt proud, and when the Prophet ﷺ saw what happened to him, he hit his chest. It was as if I was seeing my Lord with a gap. The Prophet ﷺ then said, 'O Ubayy, my Lord has sent me with the command to recite the Quran in a certain way. I initially pleaded with Him to make it easier upon my Ummah, but He insisted that I recite it in seven different ways. For every recitation, I will be rewarded individually on the Day of Resurrection.' I said, 'O Allah, forgive my Ummah.' Then I postponed the second recitation until a day when creation will express their desire for it, even if it means delaying it until the Day of Judgment."

I heard Hisham b. Hakim (b. Hizam) reciting Surah al-Furqan in a different manner from my way of reciting, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taught me to recite it. I nearly spoke sharply to him, but I delayed till he had finished. Then I caught his cloak at the neck, and I brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: Messenger of Allah, I heard this man reciting Surah al-Furqan in a manner different from that in which you taught me to recite it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ the told him to recite it. He then recited in the manner I heard him recite. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Thus was it sent down. He then said to me: Recite, I recited (it). He then said: Thus was it sent down. He said: The Qur'an was sent down in seven modes of reading, so recite according to what comes most easily. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1475)

[Machine] A man used to write for the Prophet ﷺ . He had read Al-Baqarah and Al 'Imran until he had become distinguished among us, and the Prophet ﷺ would dictate to him, "Forgiving and Merciful." So he would write, "Pardoning and Merciful." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Write, for by the One in whose hand is my soul, whatever he (Gabriel) dictates to you." Then he dictated to him, "Knowledgeable and Wise." So he wrote, "All-Hearing and All-Seeing." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Write, whichever of the two you wish." He (the scribe) narrated that he reverted from Islam and joined the pagans. He said, "I know more about Muhammad than you all. If I wanted, I would write whatever I pleased." So he died in disbelief, and it reached the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "Truly, the earth will not accept him." Then Abu Talhah said, "So I went to the land where he died, and I found him rejected." I said, "What happened to him?" They said, "We buried him, but the earth did not accept him."

So we went until we stood in front of the Prophet ﷺ , and I said, 'We differ in our recitation.' The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed when he heard this, and he found it concerning. He said, 'The people before you were destroyed because of their differences.' Then he commanded Ali, saying, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ orders you to recite as you have been taught. Indeed, the destruction of those before you was due to their differences.' So we left, and each one of us recited a letter that his companion could not recite."

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "There will come a time after sixty years where people will neglect prayer and follow their desires, and they will face misguidance. Then there will come a generation who will recite the Quran, but their actions will not surpass its surface. There will be three types of people among them: a believer, a hypocrite, and a wicked person." Bashir asked, "Who are these three?" The reply was, "The hypocrite disbelieves in it (the Quran), the wicked person utilizes it (for his own gain), and the believer has faith in it."

[Machine] I gathered the Quran and read it in one night. The Prophet ﷺ was informed about this, and he said, "Read it every month." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, let me enjoy my strength and youth." He then said, "Read it every twenty days." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, let me enjoy my strength and youth." He replied, "Read it every ten days." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, let me enjoy my strength and youth." He then said, "Read it every seven days." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, let me enjoy my strength and youth." However, he refused.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day came out to us while we were reciting the Qur’an. He said: Praise be to Allah. The Book of Allah is one, and among you are the red, and among you are the white and among you are the black. Recite it before there appear people who will recite it and straighten it as an arrow is straightened. They will get their reward for it in this world and will not get it in the Hereafter. One who is skilled in the Qur'an is associated with the noble, upright recording angels, and he who falters when he recites the Qur'an and finds it difficult for him will have a double reward. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1454)

Whom have you appointed as your deputy over the people of the valley? He said: I have appointed Ibn Abza over them, ‘Umar said: Who is Ibn Abza? Nafiʼ said: One of our freed slaves. ‘Umar said: Have you appointed a freed slave over them? Nafi’ said: He has great knowledge of the Book of Allah, is well versed in the rules of inheritance (al-fara'id) and is a (good) qadi (judge). 'Umar said. Indeed your Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah raises some people (in status) by means of this Book and brings others low by means of it.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 232)

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me the Quran." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite three verses from Surah Al-Ra'ad." The man said, "I am old, my tongue is heavy, and my heart is hard." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite three verses from Surah Al-Hamd." The man said, "It is the same for me, but please teach me a comprehensive Surah, O Messenger of Allah." So the Prophet ﷺ recited to him the verse, 'When the earth is shaken...' until 'good or evil, shall see it.' The man said, "By the One who has sent you with the truth, I do not care to add to it until I meet Allah, but tell me what good deeds I should do." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perform the five daily prayers, observe fasting in Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, give Zakat from your wealth, enjoin good and forbid evil."

[Machine] While Gabriel was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, he heard a creaking sound above him, so he raised his head and said, "A door in the sky has been opened, that has never been opened before." An angel came to him and said, "Rejoice with two surahs that have been given to you, which no prophet before you has been given: the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatiha) and the Concluding Surah of Al-Baqarah. You will not recite a letter of them except that you will be given (reward)."

[Machine] He said, "O Messenger of Allah, while I was reciting Surah Al-Baqarah last night, I heard a noise behind me and I thought that my horse had escaped. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Continue reading, O Abu 'Atik." So I turned around and saw a light extending between the sky and the earth. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept saying, "Continue reading, O Abu 'Atik." So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot continue."
