12. Book of Fasting
‘It is not an act of righteousness to fast while traveling.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1664)
These people are the disobedient ones; these are the disobedient ones. (Using translation from Muslim 1114a)
[Machine] We have the Messenger of Allahﷺ on a horse by a river of water from the sky, and people are fasting. He said, "Drink." They looked at him, so he said, "Drink, for I am riding and you are walking." They looked at him, so he turned his horse and drank, and the people drank too.
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out during the year of the conquest. He fasted until he reached the outskirts of Ghameem, and the people also fasted. Then he called for a cup of water and raised it until people looked at him, then he drank from it. After that, he was told that some people had also fasted, and he said, 'Those are the disobedient ones.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man who was surrounded by people and had shade provided for him, so he said, "What is this?" They said, "A man who is fasting." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Righteousness is not that you fast while traveling."
[Machine] "We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Tabuk, which was called the expedition of Al-Asr. While we were marching after noon, suddenly we saw a group under a tree's shade. They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, there is a man who has been fasting and the fasting has exhausted him.' He ﷺ said, 'It is not righteousness that you fast whilst on a journey.'"
the Messenger of Allah saw some people gathered around a man, so he asked (what was happening) and they said: "It is a man who is exhausted because of fasting." The Messenger of Allah said: "It is not righteousness to fast when traveling." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2257)
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out in the year of the conquest during the month of Ramadan and he fasted until he reached Al-Kadeed, then he broke his fast." He said, "So the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to follow the latest, the most recent in his affairs."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a river of water while he was on his camel, and the people were fasting and there were many pedestrians. He said, "Drink." They started to look at him, so he said, "Drink, for I am commanding you." They continued to look at him, so he turned his ride, drank, and the people drank as well."
"Some food was brought to the Messenger of Allah at Marr Az-Zahran, and he said to Abu Bakr and 'Umar: 'Come and eat.' They said: 'We are fasting.' He said: 'Saddle the camels for your companions, and help your companions."'(Daif) (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2264)
"We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah. Some of us were fasting and some of us broke their fast. The one who broke their fast had no objection to the one who fasted, and the one who fasted had no objection to the one who broke his fast. They saw that whoever had the strength to fast then that was good, and whoever was weak, then breaking it was better." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 713)
[Machine] "We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey, and among us were those who were fasting and those who were not. We stopped at a place on a very hot day. Some of us sought shade by using their hands to cover themselves from the sun, while others had a companion with a garment under which they sought shade. The ones who were fasting stayed under the shade, and the ones who were not fasting began fixing the riding animals and mending the equipment. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, 'The reward today belongs to those who were not fasting.'"
"If you wish then fast and if you wish then do not fast." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2308)
We travelled along with the Prophet ﷺ during Ramadan. Some of us were fasting and other broke their fast. Those who fasted did not find fault with those who broke, and those who broke their fast did not find fault with those who fasted. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2405)
[Machine] "We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the seventeenth of Ramadan when Makkah was conquered. The fasting people continued to fast, and the ones who were breaking their fast continued to do so. Neither group criticized the other group."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allahﷺ went out to Makkah during the year of the conquest in the month of Ramadan. He fasted until he reached Kadeed. Then he broke his fast, and the people also broke their fast with him. They used to follow the latest guidance and instruction from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ emerged in the year of conquest in the month of Ramadan and fasted until he reached Kadeed. Then, he broke his fast. He said, 'The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to follow the newest (or latest) practice from his affairs.'"
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ traveled during Ramadan and fasting became intense for one of his companions. His camel started to sway underneath the shade of a tree due to his weakness. The Prophet ﷺ was informed about this and he gave him permission to break his fast. Then, the Prophet ﷺ called for a container of water and poured it onto his hand. When the people saw this, they also drank."
Ibn ʿAbbas said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out from Medina to Mecca and he fasted till he reached 'Usfan, where he asked for water and raised his hand to let the people see him, and then broke the fast, and did not fast after that till he reached Mecca, and that happened in Ramadan." Ibn ʿAbbas used to say, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ (sometimes) fasted and (sometimes) did not fast during the journeys so whoever wished to fast could fast, and whoever wished not to fast, could do so." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1948)
"I feel able to fast while traveling; is there any sin on me?" He said: "It is a concession from Allah, the mighty and sublime, so whoever accepts it has done well, and whoever wants to fast, there is no sin on him." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2303)
[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: "Indeed, Allah loves that His concessions are granted, just as He loves that His firm commands are fulfilled."
