12. Book of Fasting
"It was the custom among the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ, that if any of them was fasting and the food was presented but he had slept before eating, he would not eat that night, nor the following day until the evening. Qais bin Sirmah Al-Ansari fasted and came to his wife at the time of Iftar, and said to her: 'No, but I will go and bring something for you.' He worked during the day, so his eyes (sleep) overcame him. Then his wife came, and when she saw him she said: 'You shall be disappointed.' About the middle of the next day he fainted. That was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, so this Ayah was revealed: 'It is made lawful for you to have sexual relations with your women on the night of the fasts. So they were very happy about that. 'And eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears distinct to you from the black thread (of night). (2:187)'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2968)
كَانَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا كَانَ الرَّجُلُ صَائِمًا فَحَضَرَهُ الْإِفْطَارُ فَنَامَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ لَمْ يَأْكُلْ لَيْلَتَهُ وَلَا يَوْمَهُ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَإِنَّ قَيْسَ بْنَ صِرْمَةَ كَانَ صَائِمًا فَلَمَّا حَضَرَ الْإِفْطَارُ أَتَى امْرَأَتَهُ فَقَالَ هَلْ عِنْدَكِ طَعَامٌ؟ قَالَتْ لَا وَلَكِنْ أَنْطَلِقُ فَأَطْلُبُ وَكَانَ يَوْمَهُ يَعْمَلُ فَغَلَبَتْهُ عَيْنُهُ فَجَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَتُهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُ قَالَتْ خَيْبَةً لَكَ فَأَصْبَحَ فَلَمَّا انْتَصَفَ النَّهَارُ غُشِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ «{أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَيْلَةَ الصِّيَامِ الرَّفَثُ إِلَى نِسَائِكُمْ هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَكُمْ} » فَفَرِحُوا بِهَا فَرَحًا شَدِيدًا {وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ}

كَانَ أَصْحَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ إِذَا كَانَ أَحَدُهُمْ صَائِمًا فَحَضَرَ الْإِفْطَارُ فَنَامَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ لَمْ يَأْكُلْ لَيْلَتَهُ وَلَا يَوْمَهُ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَإِنَّ قَيْسَ بْنَ صِرْمَةَ كَانَ صَائِمًا فَلَمَّا حَضَرَ الْإِفْطَارُ أَتَى امْرَأَتَهُ فَقَالَ أَعِنْدَكِ طَعَامٌ؟ قَالَتْ لَا وَلَكِنْ أَطْلُبُ فَطَلَبَتْ لَهُ وَكَانَ يَوْمَهُ يَعْمَلُ فَغَلَبَتْهُ عَيْنُهُ وَجَاءَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ فَقَالَتْ خَيْبَةً لَكَ فَأَصْبَحَ فَلَمَّا انْتَصَفَ النَّهَارُ غَشِيَ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ «{أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَيْلَةَ الصِّيَامِ الرَّفَثُ إِلَى نِسَائِكُمْ} » فَفَرِحُوا بِهَا فَرَحًا شَدِيدًا فَقَالَ {وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ}
"When 'Until the white (light) thread of dawn appears distinct to you from the black thread (of night)' was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ said to me: 'That only refers to the whiteness of the day from the blackness of the night.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2970)
When the verse "Until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread" was revealed, I took a white rope and a black rope, and placed them beneath my pillow ; and then I looked at them, byt they were not clear to me. So I mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He laughed and said: Your pillow is so broad and lengthy ; that is (i.e. means) night and day. The version of the narrator 'Uthman has: That is the blackness of night and whiteness of day. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2349)
"The Messenger of Allah said to a man: 'Come to the blessed breakfast, - meaning Sahur." ' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2165)
"I heard the Messenger of Allah inviting people to have Sahur in Ramadan. He said: 'Come to the blessed breakfast." (Hasan) Chatper 26. Calling Sahur "Ghada" (Breakfast) (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2163)

The dawn is not like it, as one says (and he lifted his hand) till he (dispersed his fingers) and said: It is like this. (Using translation from Muslim 1093a)
[Machine] Narrated by Al-Qa'nabi from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah from his father that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, Bilal calls the adhan at night, so continue to eat and drink until the adhan of Ibn Umm Maktum is called." Ibn Shihab said: Ibn Umm Maktum was a blind man who would not call the adhan until it was said to him: 'You have come to the morning, you have come to the morning.'

"Bilal calls the Adhan at night to awaken those of you who are asleep, and so that those who are praying Qiyam cam return. Dawn is not when the light appears like this" - and he gestured with his hand - "rather dawn is when it appears like this: - and he gestured with his two forefingers. ' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2170)
