[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed the middle ten nights of Ramadan while seeking Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Decree), then he commanded the construction (of a shelter), but it collapsed. Then it was revealed to him during the last ten nights, so he commanded its construction again. He came out to us and said, "Indeed, it has been revealed to me that Laylat al-Qadr is in one of the odd nights of the last ten nights. So seek it in the ninth, seventh, and fifth nights." I said, "O Abu Sa'id, you are more knowledgeable about our number, so which night is the ninth, seventh, and fifth?" He said, "If it is the twenty-first night, then leave (for seeking it) on the next night, then the seventh night is the one after it, and then leave on the next night; the fifth night is the one after it." Al-Ruwairi said: Al-Mutarraf reported to me from Abu al-'Ala' that he heard Mu'awiyah say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'And the third (night)'"  

اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَهُوَ يَلْتَمِسُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِالْبِنَاءِ فَنُقِضَ ثُمَّ أُبِينَتْ لَهُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَأُعِيدَ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ «إِنَّهَا أُبِينَتْ لِي لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي خَرَجْتُ لِأُبِينَهَا لَكُمْ فَتَلَاحَى رَجُلَانِ فَنُسِّيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي التَّاسِعَةِ وَالسَّابِعَةِ وَالْخَامِسَةِ» قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ إِنَّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِالْعَدَدِ مِنَّا فَأَيُّ لَيْلَةٍ التَّاسِعَةُ وَالسَّابِعَةُ وَالْخَامِسَةُ قَالَ إِذَا كَانَ لَيْلَةُ وَاحِدٍ وَعِشْرِينَ ثُمَّ دَعْ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا هِيَ السَّابِعَةُ ثُمَّ دَعْ لَيْلَةً وَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا هِيَ الْخَامِسَةُ قَالَ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «وَالثَّالِثَةِ»  

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe I'tikaf during the last ten nights of Ramadan when he was residing in Mecca. But when he traveled, he would observe I'tikaf for twenty nights in the following year."  

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا كَانَ مُقِيمًا يَعْتَكِفُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَإِذَا سَافَرَ اعْتَكَفَ مِنَ الْعَامِ الْمُقْبِلِ عِشْرِينَ»  

Ibn 'Umar (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. (Using translation from Muslim 1171a)  

«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَسَافَرَ وَلَمْ يَعْتَكِفْ فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ الْعَامِ الْمُقْبِلِ اعْتَكَفَ عِشْرِينَ يَوْمًا»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe Itikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan when he was staying in one place. However, when he traveled, he would observe Itikaf for twenty days in the following year.  

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا كَانَ مُقِيمًا يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَإِذَا سَافَرَ اعْتَكَفَ مِنَ الْعَامِ الْمُقْبِلِ عِشْرِينَ  

The Prophet ﷺ used to observe retirement (i'tikaf) to the mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan till Allah took him, and then his wives observed retirement to the mosque after his death. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2462)   

«أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللَّهُ»  

"When the Messenger of Allah wanted to perform I'tikaf, he would perform Fajr prayer and then he would enter his place of I'tikaf." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 791)  

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ صَلَّى الْفَجْرَ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ فِيهِ»  

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to observe I'tikaf, so Aisha sought his permission to observe it with him. He granted her permission, so she set up her place of seclusion. Then Hafsah asked her for permission to observe I'tikaf with her, but when Zainab saw this, she got angry and struck Hafsah along with her. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw what had happened, he said, 'What is this righteousness that you seek through this?' So he abandoned the I'tikaf until he broke his fast in Ramadan, then he observed it in the last ten days of Shawwal."  

«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرَادَ الِاعْتِكَافَ فَاسْتَأْذَنَتْهُ عَائِشَةُ لِتَعْتَكِفَ مَعَهُ فَأَذِنَ لَهَا فَضَرَبَتْ خِبَاءَهَا فَسَأَلَتْهَا حَفْصَةُ أَنْ تَسْتَأْذِنَ لَهَا لِتَعْتَكِفَ مَعَهَا فَلَمَّا رَأَتْ ذَلِكَ زَيْنَبُ ضَرَبَتْ مَعَهَا وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَةً غَيُورًا فَرَأَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخْبِيَتَهُنَّ فَقَالَ ﷺ » مَا هَذَا آلْبِرَّ تُرِدْنَ بِهَذَا؟ « فَتَرَكَ الِاعْتِكَافَ حَتَّى أَفْطَرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ اعْتَكَفَ فِي عِشْرِينَ مِنْ شَوَّالٍ»  

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wash his head while he was in seclusion."  

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُخْرِجُ رَأْسَهُ وَهُوَ يَعْتَكِفُ فَأَغْسِلُهُ»  

[Machine] Narrated Aisha: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to enter my room while he was in the mosque, during his I'tikaf. I would push my head towards him (to indicate that I want to speak to him), and he would lean close towards me. He did not enter the house except for a need.  

حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ وَعَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ «إِنْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَيُدْخِلُ إِلَيَّ رَأْسَهُ وَهُوَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ مُعْتَكِفٌ فَأُرَجِّلُهُ وَكَانَ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْبَيْتَ إِلَّا لِحَاجَتِهِ»  

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to come to me while I was in seclusion in the mosque, until he would lean against the door of my room while I was inside and the rest of him was in the mosque."  

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْتِينِي وَهُوَ مُعْتَكِفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ حَتَّى يَتَّكِئَ عَلَى عَتَبَةِ بَابِي وَأَنَا فِي حُجْرَتِي وَسَائِرُهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ»  

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was observing I'tikaf (in the mosque), I would come to him to visit him. I had a talk with him and then stood up. I then returned and he (the Prophet) also stood up to accompany me (to my house). Her dwelling place was in the house of Usamah b. Zaid. Two men from the Ansar (helpers) passed (by him at the moment). When they saw the Prophet ﷺ, they walked quickly. The Prophet ﷺ said: Be at ease, she is Safiyyah daughter of Huyayy. They said: Be glory to Allah, Messenger of Allah! He said: Satan runs in man like blood. I feared he might inspire something in your mind, or he said: evil (the narrator doubted). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2470)   

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُعْتَكِفًا فَأَتَيْتُهُ أَزُورُهُ لَيْلًا فَحَدَّثْتُهُ ثُمَّ جِئْتُ لَأَنْقَلِبَ فَقَامَ مَعِي يَقْلِبُنِي وَكَانَ مَنْزِلُهَا فِي دَارِ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ وَرَأَنَا رَجُلَانِ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَلَمَّا رَأَيَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَنَّعَا رُءُوسَهُمَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «عَلَى رِسْلِكُمَا إِنَّهَا صَفِيَّةُ بِنْتُ حُيَيٍّ» فَقَالَا سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَجْرِي مِنَ الْإِنْسَانِ مَجْرَى الدَّمِ وَإِنِّي خِفْتُ أَنْ يَقْذِفَ فِي قُلُوبُكُمَا شَيْئًا» أَوْ قَالَ «شَرًّا»  

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed I'tikaf, he would put his head near me, and I would comb it. and he entered the house only to fulfill human needs (i.e. to urinate or to relieve himself). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2467)  

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا اعْتَكَفَ أَدْنَى إِلَيَّ رَأْسَهُ فَأُرَجِّلُهُ فَكَانَ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْبَيْتَ إِلَّا لِحَاجَةِ الْإِنْسَانِ»  

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to spend the middle ten days of Ramadan in retirement and devotion (i'tikaf) in the mosque. One year he had retirement and devotion in the mosque (as usual); when the twenty-first night came, and this night when he used to come out his devotion in the mosque, he said: He who has engaged himself in devotion along with me should do so during the last ten days; I saw that night, that was caused to forget it, but I have seen myself prostrating in water and mud on the morning following (that night), so seek it in the last ten days and seek it every night with an odd number. Abu sa'id said: Rain fell that night, the mosque that was thatched building dripped, and my eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the traces of water and mud, on his forehead on the morning following the twenty-first night. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1382)   

أَنَّهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الْوُسْطَى مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَاعْتَكَفَ عَامًا حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَهِيَ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي يَخْرُجُ صَبِيحَتَهَا مِنِ اعْتِكَافِهِ قَالَ «مَنِ اعْتَكَفَ مَعِي فَلْيَعْتَكِفَ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةُ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتُهَا وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَسْجُدُ مِنْ صَبِيحَتِهَا فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ وَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي كُلِّ وِتْرٍ  

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe I'tikaf during the middle ten days of the month, and after the twentieth (day of the month), he would come out on the twenty-first and go back to his home, and those who were observing I'tikaf with him would go back like him. Then he stayed one month on the night when he used to go back home, and he addressed the people and enjoined upon them whatever Allah (SWT) willed. Then he said: 'I used to observe I'tikaf during these ten days, then I decided to spend the last ten days in I'tikaf. So whoever was observing I'tikaf with me, let him stay in his place of I'tikaf, for I was shown this night (Lailatul Qadr), then I was caused to forget it, so seek it during the last ten nights on the odd-numbered nights. And I saw myself prostrating in water and mud.'" Abu Sa'eed said: "It rained on the night of the twenty-first, and the roof of the Masjid leaked over the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray. I looked at him when he had finished praying subh and his face was wet with water and mud." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1356)  

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُجَاوِرُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الَّذِي فِي وَسَطِ الشَّهْرِ فَإِذَا كَانَ مِنْ حِينَ يَمْضِي عِشْرُونَ لَيْلَةً وَيَسْتَقْبِلُ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ لَمْ يَرْجِعْ إِلَى مَسْكَنِهِ وَرَجَعَ مَنْ كَانَ يُجَاوِرُ مَعَهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ أَقَامَ فِي شَهْرٍ جَاوَرَ فِيهِ حَتَّى كَانَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ الَّتِي يَرْجِعُ فِيهَا فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ وَأَمَرَهُمْ بِمَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُجَاوِرُ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ ثُمَّ بَدَا لِي أَنْ أُجَاوِرَ هَذِهِ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ وَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعِي فَلْيَلْبَثْ فِي مُعْتَكَفِهِ وَقَدْ أُرِيتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي كُلِّ وِتْرٍ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ» قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ فَنَظَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فِي مُصَلَّى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ وَقَدِ انْصَرَفَ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ وَوَجْهُهُ مُمْتَلِئٌ طِينًا وَمَاءً  

[Machine] "Some men from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ camped in the last seven nights of Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have seen your dreams, and they all agreed on the seven nights. So, whoever is seeking the Night of Decree should seek it in the last seven nights.'"  

أَنَّ رِجَالًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أُرُوا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي السَّبْعِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنِّي أَرَى رُؤْيَاكُمْ قَدْ تَوَاطَأَتْ عَلَى السَّبْعِ فَمَنْ كَانَ مُتَحَرِّيهَا فَلْيَتَحَرَّهَا فِي السَّبْعِ الْأَوَاخِرِ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "Seek out the Night of Qadr (Decree) during the last ten nights of Ramadan, and if one of you weakens or becomes unable, let him not be overwhelmed by the remaining seven nights."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ الْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ وَإِنْ ضَعُفَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَوْ عَجَزَ فَلَا يُغْلَبَنَّ عَنِ السَّبْعِ الْبَوَاقِي»  

[Machine] We went in search of Laylat al-Qadr, so I went to Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri and asked him, "Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioning Laylat al-Qadr?" He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed i'tikaf during the middle ten days of Ramadan, so we also observed i'tikaf with him. When the morning of the twentieth day came, he returned and we also returned with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and saw Laylat al-Qadr in a dream, but then he forgot about it."  

تَذَاكَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَأَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ؟ فَقَالَ «اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَاعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَهُ فَلَمَّا كَانَ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ رَجَعَ فَرَجَعْنَا مَعَهُ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَأَى لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْمَنَامِ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيهَا» *  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "I was shown the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) but then my family disturbed me and I forgot it, so seek it in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ ثُمَّ أَيْقَظَنِي أَهْلِي فَنَسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْغَوَابِرِ»  

The Prophet ﷺ came out to inform us about the Night of Qadr but two Muslims were quarreling with each other. So, the Prophet ﷺ said, "I came out to inform you about the Night of Qadr but such-and-such persons were quarreling, so the news about it had been taken away; yet that might be for your own good, so search for it on the 29th, 27th and 25th (of Ramadan). أَنَّهُ قَالَ خَرَجَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِيُخْبِرَنَا بِلَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ فَتَلَاحَى رَجُلَانِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَقَالَ «خَرَجْتُ لِأُخْبِرَكُمْ بِلَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ فَتَلَاحَى فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ فَرُفِعَتْ وَعَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ خَيْرًا لَكُمْ فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي التَّاسِعَةِ وَالسَّابِعَةِ وَالْخَامِسَةِ»  

The Prophet ﷺ as saying: Lailat al-qadr is the twenty-seventh night (of Ramadan) (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1386)   

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ لَيْلَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ»  

[Machine] He heard Ibn Umar saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power) and he said, "Seek it in the last seven nights of Ramadan."  

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ فَقَالَ «تَحَرُّوهَا فِي السَّبْعِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ»  

"Abu Hurairah told me that the Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever spends the nights of Ramadan in prayer (Qiyam) out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins, and whoever spends the night of Lailat Al-Qadr in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2206)  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ قَامَ رَمَضَانَ وَصَامَهُ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَمَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ»  

[Machine] "I sat with Abu Dharr by the middle Jamrah, so I approached him until my knees touched his knees. I said to him, 'Tell me about Laylat al-Qadr.' He said, 'I used to ask the people about it during the time of the Messenger of Allah. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about Laylat al-Qadr. Is it during the time of the Prophets when revelation is sent down upon them, and when they pass away, it is lifted?" He said, "No, rather it continues until the Day of Resurrection." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, then tell me in which month it is." He said, "If Allah had allowed me, I would have informed you about it. Seek it in the last ten nights, in one of the odd numbered nights, and do not ask me about it after this year." Then he turned to his companions and spoke to them. When I saw the Messenger of Allah, I caught hold of his garment and said, "I adjure you by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, to tell me in which of the two sets of ten nights it is." He became angry, more angry than I had ever seen him, and he said, "You have no mother! It is in the last ten nights.'""  

جَلَسْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي ذَرٍّ عِنْدَ الْجَمْرَةِ الْوُسْطَى فَدَنَوْتُ مِنْهُ حَتَّى كَادَتْ رُكْبَتِي تَمَسُّ رُكْبَتَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ فَقَالَ أَنَا كُنْتُ أَسْأَلَ النَّاسِ عَنْهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ تَكُونُ فِي زَمَانِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْوَحْيُ فَإِذَا قُبِضُوا رُفِعَتْ؟ فَقَالَ «بَلْ هِيَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ» فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَخْبِرْنِي فِي أَيِّ الشَّهْرِ هِيَ؟ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَوْ أَذِنَ لَأَخْبَرْتُكُمْ بِهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي إِحْدَى السُّبُعَيْنِ وَلَا تَسْأَلْنِي عَنْهَا بَعْدَ مَرَّتِكَ هَذِهِ» قَالَ وَأَقْبَلَ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ يُحَدِّثُهُمْ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اسْتَطْلَقَ بِهِ الْحَدِيثُ فَقُلْتُ أَقْسَمْتُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَتُخْبِرَنِّي فِي أَيِّ السُّبُعَيْنِ هِيَ؟ قَالَ فَغَضِبَ عَلَيَّ غَضَبًا لَمْ يَغْضَبْ عَلَيَّ مِثْلَهُ وَقَالَ «لَا أُمَّ لَكَ هِيَ تَكُونُ فِي السَّبْعِ الْأَوَاخِرِ»  

I observed i'tikaf in the first ten (nights and days) in order to seek that night (Lailat-ul-Qadr). I then observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days. Then (an angel) was sent to me and I was told that this (night) is among the last ten (nights). He who among you likes to observe i'tikaf should do so; and the people observed it along with him, and he (the Holy Prophet) said: That (Lailat-ul-Qadr) was shown to me on an odd (night) and I (saw in the dream) that I was prostrating in the morning in clay and water. So in the morning of the twenty-first night when he (the Holy Prophet) got up for dawn (prayer). there was a rainfall and the mosque dripped, and I saw clay and water. When he came out after completing the morning prayer (I saw) that his forehead and the tip of his nose had (traces) of clay and water, and that was the twenty-first night among the last ten (nights). أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الْأُوَلَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ فِي قُبَّةٍ تُرْكِيَّةٍ عَلَى سُدَّتِهَا قِطْعَةُ حَصِيرٍ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ الْحَصِيرَ بِيَدِهِ فَنَحَّاهَا فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْقُبَّةِ ثُمَّ أَطْلَعَ رَأْسَهُ يُكَلِّمُ النَّاسَ فَدَنَوْا مِنْهُ فَقَالَ «إِنِّي اعْتَكَفَتُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأُوَلِ الْتَمِسُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفْتُ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ ثُمَّ أُتِيتُ فَقِيلَ لِي إِنَّهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ فَلْيَعْتَكِفْ» فَاعْتَكَفَ النَّاسُ مَعَهُ قَالَ «وَإِنِّي أُرِيتُهَا وَإِنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي صَبِيحَتِهَا فِي طِينٍ وَمَاءٍ» فَأَصْبَحَ مِنْ لَيْلَةِ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَقَدْ قَامَ إِلَى صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ فَمَطَرَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَوَكَفَ الْمَسْجِدُ فَأَبْصَرَتُ الطِّينَ ظَاهِرًا فَخَرَجَ حِينَ فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ وَجَبِينُهُ وَأَنْفُهُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ فَإِذَا هِيَ لَيْلَةُ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ مِنَ الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ  

[Machine] I came to Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri and said, "O Abu Sa'eed, come out with us to the palm trees so that we can talk." He said, "Yes." He called for a garment to wear, then he came out. I said, "O Abu Sa'eed, have you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention the Night of Decree?" He said, "Yes, we used to observe Itikaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the first ten days of Ramadan. When the twentieth day came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever was observing Itikaf should continue to do so, for I have been shown that Night (of Decree), but I have been made to forget which night it is, and I saw myself prostrating in water and mud. Seek it on the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.'" Abu Sa'eed said, "But we did not see any clouds in the sky." Then when the night came, the sky was covered with clouds like mountains, and it rained until the roof of the mosque started to leak. I looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in water and mud until I saw the mud on the hair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."  

أَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ اخْرُجْ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ نَتَحَدَّثُ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِخَمِيصَةٍ يَلْبَسُهَا ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِعَشْرٍ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ قَامَ فِينَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي أُنْسِيتُهَا وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فِي وِتْرٍ» قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَلَمَّا كَانَ اللَّيْلُ إِذَا السَّحَابُ أَمْثَالُ الْجِبَالِ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ وَسَقْفُهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَجَدَ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ الطِّينَ فِي أَرْنَبَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ  

"My father narrated to me: 'The Night of Al-Qadr was mentioned in the presence of Abu Bakrah, so he said: "I do not search for it due to something that I heard from the Messenger of Allah, except for during the last ten (nights); for indeed I heard him say: 'Search for it when nine remain, or; when seven remain, or; when five remain, or; during the last three nights.'" He (Uyainah) said: "During the twenty (nights) of Ramadan, Abu Bakrah used to perform Salat just as he performed Salat during the rest of the year. But when the (last) ten began, he would struggle (performing more Salat during the night)." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 794)   

ذُكِرَتْ لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ عِنْدَ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ فَقَالَ مَا أَنَا بِطَالِبِهَا إِلَّا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ بَعْدَ حَدِيثٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ «الْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي سَبْعٍ يَبْقَيْنَ أَوْ خَمْسٍ يَبْقَيْنَ أَوْ ثَلَاثٍ يَبْقَيْنَ أَوْ فِي آخِرِ لَيْلَةٍ» فَكَانَ لَا يُصَلِّي فِي الْعِشْرِينَ إِلَّا كَصَلَاتِهِ فِي سَائِرِ السَّنَةِ فَإِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ اجْتَهَدَ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed I'tikaf during the middle ten days of Ramadan, while seeking the Night of Qadr. When those days had passed, he ordered the construction to be torn down and it was revealed to him that it was in the last ten days of Ramadan. So he came out to the people and said, "O people, indeed I was informed about the Night of Qadr, but I was made to forget it, so search for it in the seventh night or in the fifth night."  

اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَهُوَ يَلْتَمِسُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَلَمَّا انْقَضَى أَمَرَ بِالْبِنَاءِ فَنُقِضَ فَأُبِينَتْ لَهُ أَنَّهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَخَرَجَ إِلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي قَدْ أُبِينَتْ لِي لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ فَخَرَجْتُ أُحَدِّثُكُمْ بِهَا فَجَاءَ رَجُلَانِ يَخْتَصِمَانِ وَمَعَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ فَنُسِّيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي السَّابِعَةِ وَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْخَامِسَةِ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, I saw the Night of Qadr (Decree/Power) and then I forgot it. It is in the last ten nights (of Ramadan), and it is calm, neither hot nor cold. It is as if there is a moon casting its light, not dimming its stars, and its evil spirits do not come out until its dawn comes."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ ثُمَّ نُسِّيتُهَا وَهِيَ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ وَهِيَ طَلْقَةٌ بَلْجَةٌ لَا حَارَّةٌ وَلَا بَارِدَةٌ كَأَنَّ فِيهَا قَمَرًا يَفْضَحُ كَوَاكِبَهَا لَا يَخْرُجُ شَيْطَانُهَا حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ فَجْرُهَا»  

[Machine] We said, "O Abu al-Mundhir, by what means do you know that?" He said, "By the sign or by the verse which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us with, 'Indeed, the sun will rise on that day without any rays.'"  

قُلْنَا يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ تَعْرِفُ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ بِالْعَلَامَةِ أَوْ بِالْآيَةِ الَّتِي أَخْبَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ تَطْلُعُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ لَا شُعَاعَ لَهَا»  

[Machine] "By Allah, indeed this is in the month of Ramadan, he swears that there is nothing deserving of worship except Him. By Allah, I know for certain that the Night of Decree is this night which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to observe in the morning of the twenty-seventh day. And its sign is that the sun rises on that morning as a white disk, with no rays, as if it were a plate."  

أُبَيُّ وَاللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهُ أَلَا هُوَ إِنَّهَا لَفِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ يَحْلِفُ مَا يَسْتَثْنَى وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ أَنَّ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ هِيَ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَقُومَهَا صَبِيحَةَ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ وَأَمَارَتُهَا أَنْ تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ فِي صَبِيحَةِ يَوْمِهَا بَيْضَاءَ لَا شُعَاعَ لَهَا كَأَنَّهَا طَسْتٌ  

[Machine] Tell me, for it pleases me to see you, and I have come only to meet you. So tell me about the Night of Qadr, as Ibn Mas'ud says: "Whoever stands (in prayer) during the whole year will be affected by it or will attain it." He knew that it is in the month of Ramadan, but he preferred not to specify it for you. It is the twenty-seventh night, according to the verse that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us about. So we memorized it and recognized it. It was a clear night until the last moments before dawn. He would ascend the minaret, look at the rising of the sun, and say, "It rises without any rays until it rises high."  

حَدِّثْنِي فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يُعْجِبُنِي لُقِيُّكَ وَمَا قَدِمْتُ إِلَّا لِلِقَائِكَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ فَإِنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَقُولُ مَنْ يَقُمِ السَّنَةَ يُصِبْهَا أَوْ يُدْرِكْهَا قَالَ لَقَدْ عَلِمَ أَنَّهَا فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَلَكِنَّهُ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُعَمِّيَّ عَلَيْكُمْ وَإِنَّهَا لَيْلَةُ سَابِعَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ بِالْآيَةِ الَّتِي حَدَّثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَحَفِظْنَاهَا وَعَرَفْنَاهَا فَكَانَ زِرٌّ يُوَاصِلُ إِلَى السَّحَرِ فَإِذَا كَانَ قَبْلَهَا بِيَوْمٍ أَوْ بَعْدَهَا صَعِدَ الْمَنَارَةَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى مَطْلِعِ الشَّمْسِ وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّهَا تَطْلُعُ لَا شُعَاعَ لَهَا حَتَّى تَرْتَفِعَ»
