Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned that he would practice Iʿtikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. ʿAisha asked his permission to perform Iʿtikaf and he permitted her. Hafsa asked ʿAisha to take his permission for her, and she did so. When Zainab bint Jahsh saw that, she ordered a tent to be pitched for her and it was pitched for her. Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to proceed to his tent after the prayer. So, he saw the tents ans asked, "What is this?" He was told that those were the tents of Aisha, Hafsa, and Zainab. Allah's Apostle said, "Is it righteousness which they intended by doing so? I am not going to perform Iʿtikaf." So he returned home. When the fasting month was over, he performed Itikar for ten days in the month of Shawwal. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2045)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to observe i'tikaf in the first ten days of Ramadan, so Aisha sought permission from him and he granted her permission. Then Hafsah sought permission from him and he granted her permission. However, Zainab did not seek permission from him, but when she heard about it, she sought permission. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished praying Fajr, he went to visit those who were observing i'tikaf, and he found Aisha, Hafsah, and Zainab. He asked, "Who is this for?" They said, "For Aisha, Hafsah, and Zainab." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You want to compete in acts of goodness with this." So he did not observe i'tikaf in those ten days of Ramadan, but he observed i'tikaf in the ten days of Shawwal.

I observed i'tikaf in the first ten (nights and days) in order to seek that night (Lailat-ul-Qadr). I then observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days. Then (an angel) was sent to me and I was told that this (night) is among the last ten (nights). He who among you likes to observe i'tikaf should do so; and the people observed it along with him, and he (the Holy Prophet) said: That (Lailat-ul-Qadr) was shown to me on an odd (night) and I (saw in the dream) that I was prostrating in the morning in clay and water. So in the morning of the twenty-first night when he (the Holy Prophet) got up for dawn (prayer). there was a rainfall and the mosque dripped, and I saw clay and water. When he came out after completing the morning prayer (I saw) that his forehead and the tip of his nose had (traces) of clay and water, and that was the twenty-first night among the last ten (nights). (Using translation from Muslim 1167c)

She had a talk with him for a while, then she got up in order to return home. The Prophet ﷺ accompanied her. When they reached the gate of the mosque, opposite the door of Um-Salama, two Ansari men were passing by and they greeted Allah's Apostle . He told them: Do not run away! And said, "She is (my wife) Safiya bint Huyai." Both of them said, "Subhan Allah, (How dare we think of any evil) O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" And they felt it. The Prophet said (to them), "Satan reaches everywhere in the human body as blood reaches in it, (everywhere in one's body). I was afraid lest Satan might insert an evil thought in your minds." I asked Abu Saʿid, and he was a friend of mine, (about the Night of Qadr) and he said, "We practiced Iʿtikaf (seclusion in the mosque) in the middle third of the month of Ramadan with the Prophet ﷺ . In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet ﷺ came and addressed us and said, 'I was informed of (the date of the Night of Qadr) but I was caused to forget it; so search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water (as a sign). So, whoever was in Iʿtikaf with me should return to it with me (for another 10-day's period)', and we returned. At that time there was no sign of clouds in the sky but suddenly a cloud came and it rained till rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque which was made of date-palm leaf stalks. Then the prayer was established and I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in mud and water and I saw the traces of mud on his forehead." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2016)

The Prophet ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. One year he did not observe i'tikaf. When the next year came, he observed i'tikaf for twenty nights (i.e. days). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2463)
