31. Musnad of Women (24/26)
I started with the names of the daughters and wives of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from the narrations of the women that have reached us.
I listed their names in alphabetical order. I began with the daughters of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his wives so that no one would precede them. Fatimah, the youngest daughter of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the one he loved the most, was listed first out of love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and her, as these are the daughters of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .

[Machine] And she said, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed I do not desire what women desire."
[Machine] "That Souda gave her day to Aisha and he used to alternate between Aisha's day and Souda's day."
[Machine] When Sawdah bint Zam'ah became old, she gifted her day to Aisha. So the Prophet ﷺ would divide his day between Aisha and Sawdah.
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ divorced her, so she said, "O Messenger of Allah, keep me and do not divorce me, and make my day for Aisha." So Allah revealed: {So there is no blame upon them for reuniting}. And making peace is better. So whatever they agree upon is permissible.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ wanted to divorce Sawda, so he called Abu Bakr and Umar to witness it. Sawda then said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have no desire for worldly things except to be resurrected on the Day of Judgment among your wives, so that I may receive the same reward as them."
[Machine] About al-Haytham or Abu al-Haytham, "Abu Bakr doubted that the Prophet ﷺ divorced Sauda once and she sat in his way. When he passed by her, she asked him for her right of return and if he would return her dowry to any of his wives he chose, hoping that she would be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection to be his wife. He accepted that."
31.36 [Machine] Sawda, daughter of Zam'ah
[Machine] Sawda was a robust woman whose physique frightened people.
[Machine] Sauda and Zainab, the camel will never move us after we heard from the Prophet ﷺ them saying, "These are the buttocks of al-Husr." So, their wives were rejected from going on Hajj, except for them.
[Machine] Narrated Sauda bint Zam'a, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ : I said, "O Messenger of Allah, when Usman bin Maz'un walks, he prays for us until he reaches us." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "If you knew (the knowledge of) death, O daughter of Zam'a, you would have known that it is worse than what you can bear."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "People will be resurrected barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised, with their sweat reaching to their ears." So I asked, "Will we be looking at each other then?" He replied, "The people will be too occupied." "Each of them will have concerns that will make them oblivious."
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يُبْعَثُ النَّاسُ حُفَاةً عُرَاةً غُرْلًا قَدْ أَلْجَمَهُمُ الْعَرَقُ وَبَلَغَ شُحُومَ الْآذَانِ» فَقُلْتُ يُبْصِرُ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا؟ فَقَالَ «شُغِلَ النَّاسُ» {لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ}
[Machine] Badr arrived with Sowda, the daughter of Zama'a, at the house of the family of A'fra in their resting place, on the outskirts. I sought protection for my son Afraa and that was before the veil was imposed on them. She said, "So it was said, Badr arrived, so I went to my house and there I found Suhail bin Amr. And there was a group surrounding him, with his hands on his neck. So when I saw him, I lost control of myself and said, 'Oh Abu Yazid, have you been given power? Will you not cease being noble?' She said, 'By Allah, what made me aware of the situation was the statement of the Messenger of Allah from inside the house, 'Is Allah exalted and His Messenger exalted?' So I said, 'Oh Messenger of Allah, I only regained control of myself when I saw Abu Yazid, and I said what I said.'"
[Machine] "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Would you take its skin and tan it and benefit from it?'"
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, my father is an old man who is unable to perform Hajj. Should I perform Hajj on his behalf?" So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Have you ever considered if your father had a debt and you paid it off, would it fulfill his obligation?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then perform Hajj on his behalf."

[Machine] We had a sheep that died, so we threw it away. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and said, "Did you not benefit from its hide?" So, we sent for it, skinned it, tanned the hide, and made it into a water container. We drank from it until it became worn out.
[Machine] "So we tanned its skin and used to throw it, until it became a beautiful leather cover."
[Machine] About Sawdah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , she said: "We had a sheep that died, so we tanned its skin and we have been using it ever since."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said, "Did you enjoy its aroma?"
[Machine] We had a sheep that died, so we threw it away. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and asked, "What did you do with your sheep?" We said, "It died, so we threw it away." He said, "Couldn't you have benefited from its skin?" I said, "But it's dead." He recited this verse, "Say, 'I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal.'" He then said, "The only thing forbidden to you is to eat the carrion." So they sent for its skin and tanned it until they had a good piece with them.
31.37 [Machine] Zainab bint Jahsh bin Rabab Al-Asadiyyah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ and may Allah be pleased with her.
[Machine] "Zainab bint Jahsh, along with other women, emigrated from the tribe of Bani Asad. He reminded them."
[Machine] Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Zainab bint Jahsh, and she was previously under the guardianship of Zaid ibn Harithah.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Zainab bint Jahsh bin Ri'ab bin Asad bin Khuzaimah, and her mother was Ummaymah bint Abdul Muttalib bin Hashim, the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "And she was the first wife of the Prophet ﷺ who had passed away."
[Machine] Zainab bint Jash, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , passed away in the twentieth year.
[Machine] Zainab bint Jahsh passed away during the caliphate of Umar.
[Machine] I heard Anas ibn Malik say, "Zaynab bint Jahsh used to boast over the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, saying, 'Your fathers married you, but Allah married me from the heavens.'"
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ entered his house and with him was Umar ibn al-Khattab. And there was Zainab bint Jahsh praying and while she was in her prayer, she was supplicating. So the Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, she is a tender-hearted woman."
[Machine] Several members of the Quraysh approached me, so I sent my sister Hamna to consult with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "Where is the one who teaches her the book of her Lord and the tradition of her Prophet?" She asked, "And who is that, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Zaid bin Haritha." Hamna became extremely angry and said, "O Messenger of Allah, will you marry your cousin's slave?!" She came back and informed me, and I became angrier than she was, and said something even more severe. So Allah revealed the verse, "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair." She sent a message to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Indeed, I seek forgiveness from Allah and I obey Allah and His Messenger; do as you please." So he married me to Zaid, and I used to disparage him. I complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so he admonished me. Then I took hold of his tongue and complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Keep your husband and fear Allah." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I want to divorce her." So he divorced me. When my waiting period was over, the only person I informed was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He visited me at my house while I was uncovered and I said, "This is a matter from the heavens." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, without a proposal or witnesses?" He replied, "Allah is the matchmaker, and Gabriel is the witness."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Zaid, "Mention it to her." Zaid said, "So I departed and said, 'O Zainab, rejoice! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sends his regards to you.' She said, 'I don't do anything until I consult my Lord.' So she went to her mosque and the Qur'an was revealed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to her without seeking permission."
[Machine] If the Messenger of Allah concealed something from the revelation, he would have concealed this verse: "And you concealed in yourself what Allah would reveal and you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you should fear Him. So when Zaid had no longer any need for her, We married her to you" (Quran 33:37).
لَوْ كَتَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْوَحْيِ لَكَتَمَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ وَاللهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ تَخْشَاهُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى زَيْدٌ مِنْهَا وَطَرًا زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا}
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ withheld a verse from the Book of Allah, he withheld this verse "{And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, 'Keep your wife and fear Allah,' while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose} to his saying, {And [due] to Allah from the believers is their lives and their property, for the enjoyment of Allah and His Messenger, and the Messenger will then inherit it}.
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَتَمَ شَيْئًا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللهِ كَتَمَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {وَإِذْ تَقُولُ لِلَّذِي أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ} إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {وَطَرًا زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا}
Regarding His statement: “...and if the one who Allah had blessed says…” (Aḥzāb 33:37) he said, "He was favored by Allah with Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ favored him with freedom ˹from slavery˺."
˹Regarding˺ “and hold on to your wife” (Aḥzāb 33:37), Qatādah said, Zayd came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Zaynab is is stern toward me with her tongue and I want to divorce her." Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Fear Allāh and hold on to your wife," while the Prophet ﷺ would have liked that he would divorce her, however, he feared what people would say if he ordered him to divorce her. Then Allah revealed “...and you hide within yourself what Allah is making known and you fear the people while Allah is more deserving to be feared. And when Zayd had fulfilled his desire with her...” (Aḥzāb 33:37).
He said, when he had divorced her, i.e. "We married you to her." (Aḥzāb 33:37)
{أَمْسَكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ} قَالَ قَتَادَةُ جَاءَ زَيْدٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ زَيْنَبَ اشْتَدَّ عَلِيَّ لِسَانُهَا وَإِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَلِّقُهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «اتَّقِ اللهَ وَأَمْسَكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ» وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُطَلِّقَهَا وَخَشِيَ قَالَةَ النَّاسِ إِنْ أَمَرَهُ بِطَلَاقِهَا فَأَنْزَلَ {وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ وَاللهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ تَخْشَاهُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى زَيْدٌ مِنْهَا وَطَرًا}
قَالَ لَمَّا طَلَّقَهَا زَيْدٌ {زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا}
Regarding His statement: “and if the one who Allāh had favored says…” (Aḥzāb 33:37) and he was Zayd b. Ḥārithah: Allah had favored him with Islam, and “and you had blessed” the Messenger of Allah ﷺ freed him ˹from slavery˺.
˹Regarding˺ “and hold on to your wife and fear Allah and you hide within yourself what Allah has made known and you fear people...” (Aḥzāb 33:37), he said, he used to hide within himself ˹that˺ he liked that he would divorce her.. He said that al-Ḥasan said, "No Āyah was revealed upon him more severe that His statement, '...and you hide within yourself', and if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were to hide anything from the Waḥī, he would have hidden it."
˹Regarding˺ “then when Zayd had fulfilled his desire with her,” ˹means˺ when Zayd had divorced her, “we married you to her.” He said, Zayb b. Jaḥsh used to boast to the wives of the Prophet ﷺ saying, "As for you all, your fathers married you off. And as for me, then the Owner of the Throne married me off."
˹Regarding˺ "... fear Allah,", he said, meaning O Prophet of Allah her ˹lack of˺ character has been hard on me and I am divorcing this woman. And the Prophet ﷺ, when he said this, said, "Hold on to your wife and fear Allah."

[Machine] About Ibn Jurayj's statement, "and you hide in yourself what Allah will manifest," [this means that] within the soul of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , there is his love, divorce from it, and marriage to it. Allah refused [Muhammad] to not inform about what the Prophet ﷺ concealed within himself.

Prophet Dawūd ؑ was married to Yasīʿ similar to how the Prophet ﷺ was married to Zaynab ؓ
Regarding ˹the āyah˺ "˹it is˺ the Way of Allah with those who preceeded” (Aḥzāb 33:62) he said: ˹that it was about Prophet˺ Dawūd and the woman that he married and her name was Yasīʿ. This was also the Way with Muḥammad ﷺ and Zaynab.
Regarding ˹the āyah˺ “...and ever is the command of Allah a destiny decreed” (Aḥzāb 33:38) this was from His Way for ˹the Prophet˺ Dawūd and the woman, and the Prophet ﷺ and Zaynab.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the house of Zaid bin Harithah and sought permission to enter. Zainab granted him permission, but did not have her head covered, so she threw her garment over her head. He asked her about Zaid, and she replied, "He has gone on a journey, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and seemed worried. Zainab said, "So I followed him and heard him saying, 'Blessed is the One who controls the hearts.'" He continued saying it until he disappeared.

[Machine] Zainab said, "I am the one whom Allah married from the heavens." Aisha said, "I am the one whom Sufwan bin al-Muattal blamed when he carried me." Then Zainab said to her, "What did you say when you rode?". She said, "I said 'Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best disposer of affairs.'" Zainab said, "You said the word of the believers."

[Machine] About Qatadah's saying, "And it is not for a believing man or believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error." He said, "This verse was revealed regarding Zainab bint Jahsh, who was the cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her, and she accepted, thinking that he was proposing to her for himself. However, when she found out that he was proposing to her on behalf of Zaid bin Harithah, she refused and disputed. So Allah revealed this verse, 'And it is not for a believing man or believing woman...'."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ proposed to Zainab, who was the daughter of his cousin, with the intention of marrying her to Zaid. However, she misunderstood and thought that he wanted to marry her himself. When she found out that he actually intended to marry her to Zaid, she refused. Then Allah revealed the verse: "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair." So she accepted and agreed.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ married a woman from his wives, namely Zainab. Um Salim made a type of bread called "Hayas," and she placed it in a container. They were in a state of extreme fatigue on that day. Um Salim said, "Take this and give it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and convey my greetings to him, and tell him that this is a little gift from us to him." So, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, Um Salim sent me with this bread, and she is sending her greetings to you and saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is a little gift from us to you.'" He looked at it and said, "Put it down." So, I put it down on one side of the house.
Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Go and call so and so and so and so," naming many men. He then said, "Call all the Muslims you meet." So, I called the people he named and whoever among the Muslims I met. I came, and the house was filled. The Safa and the stone chamber in the house were both full. We asked Anas, "How many people were there?" He said, "About three hundred." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then invited me with the bread. So, I brought it, and he placed his hand on it and called men to come and eat. They would come, eat, get up, and others would come and follow them until they all ate. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Take it away." I do not know whether he meant that I should take it from the place where I had put it or from where he had placed it. It remained in the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and groups of people came and talked until they became too heavy for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He got up and left them. When they saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ return, they thought that they had become heavy on him. So, they rushed to leave, and Anas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and lowered the curtain and entered. He stayed inside for a while, then the revelation was sent down to him. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left while reciting the verses from 'O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when permission is given to you' to the end of the verses." Anas said, "I was the first one to whom this Ayah was revealed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited it to me."

[Machine] He informed me of the most amazing thing I saw from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, "When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ married Zaynab bint Jahsh, my mother said to me, 'O Anas, indeed the Prophet of Allah ﷺ has become a groom and I do not see that he has had breakfast. So come with this empty bag of dates and a container of milk, enough for a long time.' So she prepared a meal for him, and she said, 'O Anas, take this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his wife.' When I brought the bag of dates with the container of milk to the Prophet ﷺ , which had the meal, he said, 'Place it in the corner of the house and go call Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, and some of his companions. Then call the people of the mosque and whoever you see on the way.' I was surprised by the little amount of food and the large number of people he commanded me to invite, so I disliked disobeying him until the house and the room were filled. He asked, 'O Anas, do you see anyone else?' I said, 'No, O Prophet of Allah.' He said, 'Bring that container.' So I brought the container, and he dipped three fingers into it, and the container began to increase and rise until they all ate from it and left, and there remained in the container almost the same amount as I brought. He said, 'Place it in front of Zaynab.' So I left and plugged the door with a mat." Thabit said, "We asked, 'O Abu Hamzah, how many were the ones who ate from that container?' He said, 'I estimate it to be seventy-one or seventy-two.'"

[Machine] I heard Anas ibn Malik say, "Did not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marry Zainab bint Jahsh with bread and meat?"
[Machine] I know people by this verse, when Zainab was given to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and she was with him in the house and made food, then the people came, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and the people stayed in their places, and he returned while the people were sitting. So Allah revealed, "O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck the curtain and the people stood up.
[Machine] I heard Anas ibn Malik say, "The verse of the hijab was revealed regarding Zainab bint Jahsh."
[Machine] Anas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became married to Zainab bint Jahsh in Al-Madinah. He invited people for a meal after the morning prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and some men sat down after the people had stood up, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and left. I walked with him until he reached the door of Aisha's room. He thought that they had left, so he returned and I returned with him. Then we found the people had stood up, so he struck a screen between me and him, and the verse of Hijab was revealed."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ saw a woman whom he was attracted to, so he went to Zainab bint Jahsh and fulfilled his desire with her. Then, he left and said, "Indeed, a woman is accepted in the form of a Satan and behaves in the form of a Satan. So whoever finds that, let him go to his wife, for indeed he suppresses what is in himself."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his wives, "The first of you to follow me is the one with the longest hand." Aisha said, "So, when we gathered after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , we would stretch out our hands against the wall and see whose hand was the longest. We would not stop doing that until Zainab bint Jahsh, who was a short woman and did not have a longer hand than the rest of us, passed away. Then we realized that the Prophet ﷺ meant by the length of the hand the act of giving charity. She was a woman who used to work with her hands and give charity with it in the cause of Allah."
