Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said to the people, "Wouldn't you benefit by its skin?" The people replied that it was dead. The Prophet ﷺ said, "But its eating only is illegal."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ فَقَالَ هَلاَّ اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا قَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيِّتَةٌ قَالَ إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا

Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said (to the people), "Why don't you use its hide?" They said, "But it is dead," He said, "Only eating it, is prohibited."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ فَقَالَ هَلاَّ اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا قَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيِّتَةٌ قَالَ إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا

A sheep was given in alms to a female client of ours, but it died. The Prophet ﷺ passed it and said: Why did you not tan its skin and get some good out of it ? They replied: Messenger of Allah, it died a natural death. He said: It is only the eating of it that is prohibited.

أُهْدِيَ لِمَوْلاَةٍ لَنَا شَاةٌ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ فَمَاتَتْ فَمَرَّ بِهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَلاَ دَبَغْتُمْ إِهَابَهَا فَاسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِهِ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا

the Prophet passed by a dead sheep that had been thrown aside. He said: "Who does this belong to?" They said: "Maimunah." He said: "Why did she not make use of its skin?" They said: "It is dead meat (i.e., it was not slaughtered properly)." He said: "Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has only forbidden us to eat it."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَرَّ عَلَى شَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ مُلْقَاةٍ فَقَالَ لِمَنْ هَذِهِ فَقَالُوا لِمَيْمُونَةَ فَقَالَ مَا عَلَيْهَا لَوِ انْتَفَعَتْ بِإِهَابِهَا قَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ ﷻ أَكْلَهَا

"The Messenger of Allah passed by a dead sheep that he had given to a freed slave woman of Maimunah, the wife of the Prophet. He said: 'Why don't you make use of its hide?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, it is dead meat.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'It is only forbidden to eat it."

مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِشَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ كَانَ أَعْطَاهَا مَوْلاَةً لِمَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلاَّ انْتَفَعْتُمْ بِجِلْدِهَا قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Would you like to benefit from its skin?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is a dead animal (carcass)." He replied, "Its consumption is only forbidden."

رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَوِ اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا؟» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا»

Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said to the people, "Wouldn't you benefit by its skin?" The people replied that it was dead. The Prophet ﷺ said, "But its eating only is illegal." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2221)

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ هَلااسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا؟ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said, "Did you not benefit from its skin?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed it is dead." He said, "Indeed, its consumption is forbidden."

مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِشَاةٍ مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ أَلا اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِجِلْدِهَا؟ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Have you enjoyed its hide?" They replied, "It is a dead animal." He said, "The tanning of its skin makes it pure."

النَّبِيُّ ﷺ هَلَّا اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا؟ فَقَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ دِبَاغَ الْأَدِيمِ طُهُورُهُ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utba ibn Masud that Abdullah ibn Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep which had been given to a mawla of his wife, Maimuna. He said, ' Aren't you going to use its skin?' They said, 'Messenger of Allah, but it is carrion. 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Only eating it is haram.' "

أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِشَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ كَانَ أَعْطَاهَا مَوْلاَةً لِمَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَفَلاَ انْتَفَعْتُمْ بِجِلْدِهَا فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said, "Why don't you benefit from its skin?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is dead." He said, "Only its meat is forbidden."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيْتَةٍ قَالَ «هَلَّا اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِجِلْدِهَا؟ » قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said, "Why don't you take its skin and tan it so that you can benefit from it?" They said, "But it is dead." He said, "Only its consumption is forbidden."

مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِشَاةٍ مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ «أَلَا أَخَذُوا إِهَابَهَا فَدَبَغُوهُ فَانْتَفَعُوا بِهِ؟ » فَقَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ فَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا»

[AI] "Hanbali (Maymuna’s slave) carried a dead sheep while the Prophet ﷺ was passing. The Prophet ﷺ asked, 'What will the family of this sheep do if they take its hide and tan it in order to benefit from it?' They replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, it's already dead.' He said, 'Only its consumption is prohibited.'"

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ لِمَوْلَاةٍ لِمَيْمُونَةَ مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «مَا عَلَى أَهْلِ هَذِهِ لَوْ أَخَذُوا إِهَابَهَا فَدَبَغُوهُ فَانْتَفَعُوا بِهِ؟» فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةُ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Did you enjoy it?" They said, "Indeed, it is a dead animal." He said, "Verily, the tanning of its skin is its purification."

النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «هَلَّا اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِهَا؟» قَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ «إِنَّ دِبَاغَ الْأَدِيمِ طُهُورُهُ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a sheep that belonged to Maymuna, which had died. He said, "Did you not benefit from its skin?" They asked, "How, when it is dead, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Its meat is only forbidden."

مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى شَاةٍ لِمَوْلَاةٍ لِمَيْمُونَةَ مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ «أَلَا اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا» قَالُوا وَكَيْفَ وَهِيَ مَيْتَةٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ لَحْمُهَا»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said, "Can you not benefit from its skin?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is dead." He said, "Only its eating is prohibited."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ «هَلَّا انْتَفَعْتُمْ بِجِلْدِهَا» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا»

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَرَّ عَلَى شَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ مُلْقَاةٍ فَقَالَ «لِمَنْ هَذِهِ؟» فَقَالُوا لِمَيْمُونَةَ فَقَالَ «مَا عَلَيْهَا لَوِ انْتَفَعَتْ بِإِهَابِهَا؟» قَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ اللهُ أَكْلَهَا»

“Why don’t they take its skin and ten it, and make us of it?” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, it is dead meat.”* He said: “It is only unlawful to eat it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3610)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ لِمَوْلَاةِ مَيْمُونَةَ فَقَالَ أَلَا أَخَذُوا إِهَابَهَا فَدَبَغُوهُ فَانْتَفَعُوا بِهِ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ؟ قَالَ إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said, "Why didn't you benefit from its hide?" They replied, "O Messenger of Allah, it is dead." He said, "Its meat is only prohibited due to the contamination of an (animal) that urinates or (an animal) that drinks dirty water."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ فَقَالَ هَلَّا انْتَفَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا زَادَ عَقِيلٌ أَوَلَيْسَ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالْقَرَظِ مَا يُطَهِّرُهَا

"مَرَّ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ عَلَى شَاةٍ لِمَوْلَاة لِمَيْمُونَةَ مَيِّتَةٍ، فَقَالَ: أَفَلَا اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا؟ قَالُوا: كَيْفَ وَهِىَ مَيِّتَةٌ يَا رَسُولَ الله؟ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ لَحْمُهَا".
